Spring Term—Issue 5 Friday 28th February 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

The week after next will be CHARITY WEEK at Sacred Heart. Alongside the usual day-to-day routine of assemblies, lessons and lunchtimes, the school will take on its annual alter-ego; we will all surrender to a mad-cap, frantic, colourful and ebullient madness which has a single aim – to raise as much money as possible to ensure the success of the school’s next mission to the Pattaya orphanage in Thailand. From car-washing and sausage-sizzles to tray-bakes and ‘soak the teacher’, from the whole-school quiz which brings the normal timetable to a halt and turns form-tutors into crazed competitors, to the final triumph of the Bridge Walk which witnesses the entire school zig-zagging back and forth over the Thames on Sunday morning, the Sacred Heart community will be united throughout the week in its focus on CHARITY.

When you look the word up, this is what you find:

The word ‘charity’ entered the English language through the old French word ‘charité’, which was derived from the Latin word ‘caritas’. Originally in Latin the word ‘caritas’ meant preciousness, dearness, high price. Caritas became

the standard translation for the Greek word ‘agape’, meaning an unconditional love for others. How lucky are we, that we can demonstrate our willingness to love other people less fortunate than ourselves, by taking part in activities which we find enjoyable anyway? For us, Charity week does not involve any great sacrifice, but taking part is a real tonic for both body and soul. The more we participate, the more enjoyment and satisfaction we get in return. All the more reason to get involved. Parents – if you don’t yet know what your son or daughter will be doing for Charity Week, please ask them and help them however you can. Join the Bridge Walk on Sunday 15th March - it’s a great way to start the day! However you contribute to the success of the week, be assured that not only will you yourself feel the benefit, but that there will be someone on the other side of the world whose life you will change for the better.

Year 7 Historians at the US Embassy for Black History Month—

Friday 14th February 2020

The US Embassy in London invited students from Sacred Heart to take part in their Black History Month celebration on Friday 14th February. Here in England we celebrate Black History Month in October, the United Stated celebrate it in February. 30 students from across Year 7 took part in meeting diplomats, US Marines, Army Officers and US Governmental personnel as well as the US Deputy Ambassador to the UK and tucking into the crisps and biscuits provided. The students learnt about some of the many Black History heroes from a range of different areas from civil rights (Malcolm X) to philosophy (James Baldwin), Medicine (Charles Drew), Science and NASA (Mae Jamison) and culture, music and entertainment (Maya Angelou and Nina Simone). The students were also able talk with the diplomats themselves about their own amazing lives, careers and experiences and it was a wholly motivational and enjoyable day at the Embassy. We look forward to more visits from Sacred Heart to the US Embassy in the future. The History Department

Year 7 Historians at the US Embassy for Black History Month—

Friday 14th February 2020

On Friday 14th February a selected group of Year 7 pupils went to the US Embassy in Nine Elms. It was an extraordinary trip and each of us learnt something new. We went to celebrate American Black History Month. The building was absolutely breath taking. A waterfall greeted us as we en-tered and the interior was just as gorgeous as the outside, with lots of amazing artwork on the walls. When we got in and settled down, a US marine took us around the building and then we listened to talks from people who worked at the embassy about their black history heroes – names like Nina Simone, Charles Drew, Mae Jemison and Malcolm X. They all put forth very good arguments as to why we should choose their hero as our favourite and in the end each school had to choose their overall hero – Sacred Heart chose Malcolm X and Leroyd explained our decision. Who is your black history hero? Overall, the trip was a once in a lifetime expe-rience. I am glad I was a part of it.

Sixth Form Journalism Team

Well it is exam season for Sixth Form and it is our last official mocks before our real AS and A Levels. This is the main time to experience stress. For some, the stress can be used as motivation to revise and thrive whereas for others, it is added pressure that makes people crack. Whichever one you experience, there are different ways to calm yourself and alleviate the pres-sure you have placed upon yourself. The main way is to plan your day; set out what you will revise and the breaks you will take. Listen to music or go for a walk.

The most important thing to remember is to pace yourself. Don’t cram the night before exams and take some time to relax, go out with friends or family and forget revising for a while. Whatever you do, just under-stand that stress does play a significant role in how you perform in exams so whatever method you use, just remember that there’s a time to relax and a time to revise; you just need to decide.

BAIN & CO. INSIGHT SESSION—SIXTH FORM

Nine current students and one ex-student Joshua

Nkatiah (far right) were lucky enough to visit the Bain

office on The Strand this week. Students were

introduced to a career in management consultancy and

strategic operations followed by a tour of the office. It

was a thoroughly insightful session and highlighted

what an invigorating industry it is to work in, our

students were incredibly professional and asked inter-

esting questions.

This opportunity came about because Joshua supported

the school at our ‘Meet the Undergraduate’ session for

Year 12 students where he and I ended up talking about

his future aspirations. He spoke about his passion for

pursuing a career in management consultancy and I was

able to support through a friend of mine who is a

partner at the company.

It just goes to show that networking is so

important; taking opportunities when

they are presented to you and also

giving back.

We understand from our local NHS Trust that hospi-

tal appointments are now paperless. To reflect this

we are changing the procedure needed when in-

forming school of an appointment.

Please can all parents follow the advice below.

Hospital appointments should be evidenced to

school as follows:

Where an appointment letter is sent, please

present to school as evidence of

appointment.

Where a text has been sent for the appoint-

ment, please either show the office staff the

text, or forward the text to your child so they

can show the office staff.

For booked GP appointments please follow

the same procedure, as most GP services will

notify you by text.

For early morning walk-in appointments your

practice should be able to provide you with a

slip to confirm that the appointment has tak-

en place. Please give to your child so they can

hand to reception on their arrival to avoid

them being marked late.
