The Dynamics of Complex Urban

Systems

An Interdisciplinary Approach

The present book outlines a conceptual frameworkfor modelling and forecasting the dynamics of bothgrowth-limited cities and megacities bringing to-gether experts from several disciplines. The interdis-ciplinary point of view is particularly stressed. Thecontributions presented reflect the various interde-pendencies between structural (physics and mathe-matics models) and social development (spatial de-cision making and urban planning models). The vol-ume emphasizes not only the contributions from dif-ferent disciplines but also pays attention to specif-ic problems like model calibration, data availabilityand management, case studies and interactions withurban planners. It is the collection of all the contri-butions of the speakers at the international work-shop "The Dynamics of Complex Urban Systems:an interdisciplinary approach" held at Monte Verità(Ascona/Switzerland) from 4th to 6th of November2004.

Statistical Methods for Human

Rights

Human rights issues are shaping the modern world. They define the expectations by which nations arejudged and affect the policy of governments, corpo-rations, and foundations. They have set the agendain prosecutions at the International Criminal Courtat the Hague, funding decisions by the Internation-al Monetary Fund, and corporate expansion pro-grams by multinationals. Statistics is central to themodern perspective on human rights. It allows re-searchers to measure the effect of health care poli-cies, the penetration of educational opportunity, andprogress towards gender equality. The new wave ofentrepreneurial charities demands impact assess-ments and documentation of milestone achievement.Non-governmental organizations need statistics tobuild cases, conduct surveys, and target their efforts. This book describes the statistics that underlie thesocial science research in human rights. Crossing Bridges

During the late 19th and throughout the 20th centu-ry, social sciences in general and economics in par-ticular have undergone enormous progress. Thishas led to something of an embarrassment of rich-es. While certain topics have been fully researchedto the point where the marginal benefit from furtherresearch is approaching zero, others have remainedlargely under-researched or were being ignored al-together. It is this discrepancy which prompted theresearch paradigm of “Crossing Bridges”. For thisvolume, ten authors have joined forces to addressthe problem of under-researched topics, focussingin particular on gaps in interdisciplinary research be-tween economics and other social sciences such aslinguistics, art and cultural history. Making use of in-terdisciplinary methods and approaches, the bookmakes a case for stronger bonds between the differ-ent fields of social science.

Inevitable Aging?

Contributions to Evolutionary-Demographic Theory

Aging is inevitable: this is gerontological dogma. And humans do inevitably grow old, which is prob-ably why it seems so unlikely to us that other formsof life could escape aging. Escaping aging is not es-caping death. Death is an inherent part of life, andit can strike any time. But the question is, whetherdeath necessarily becomes more likely as life pro-ceeds. And it does not. The theoretical results in thismonograph indicate that life provides alternativestrategies. While some organisms will deteriorateover adult ages, for others mortality appears to fallor remain constant, at least over an extended periodof life after reproductive maturity. This is empirical-ly observed especially for several species that keepon growing during adult ages. Perhaps, the diversityof aging matches the diversity of life. My thesis, thecentral insight of this monograph, is: to deeply un-derstand why some species age it is necessary to un-derstand why other species do not.

Features

- Pathbreaking findings on aging opening a com-pletely new field of research - The author gets awayfrom the human centered vision of life showing thataging in any organism does not necessarily corre-spond to deterioration and senescence - Optimiza-tion models using sophisticated methods of controltheory and dynamic programming

Kinship and Demographic Behavior

in the Past

What is the influence of family and kinship networkson fertility, marriage, migration and mortality? Pop-ulation scientists have studied the relationship be-tween families, both immediate and extended, anddemographic behavior for many years. This bookexamines the role of kinship and the family’s influ-ence on the health outcomes of their children, theirchildren’s selection of marriage partners, coupleshaving higher order births or reduced fertility, indi-vidual migration and origins of populations. Mortal-ity patterns are examined to determine the influenceof fertility patterns on parents’ mortality, the contri-bution of parents’ longevity to their children’s lifes-pan, and whether a family history of disease affectsthe risk of dying from that same disease. The volumeemphasizes the importance of studies that includeand compare other factors related to social organi-zation with information on multi-generational fami-lies. New Issues and Paradigms in

Research on Social Dilemmas

This edited volume has been compiled to present thelatest developments in the field of social dilemma re-search. Social dilemmas are situations when there is aconflict between self-interest and collective interest.Research in this area has gained interest in the lasttwenty years in disciplines such as sociology, psy-chology, and economics. It also has wide applicationsto numerous real-world issues such as environmen-tal degradation, organizational management, and so-cietal public good. The main aim of this work was toinvestigate under what circumstances people makedecisions that are inline with the collective interestas well as investigating what can increase the likeli-hood of cooperation. There will be three man sec-tions mirroring the different levels of analysis: indi-vidual, group, and societal.

Collective Action in the Formation

of Pre-Modern States

Anthropological archaeology and other disci-plines concerned with the formation of earlycomplex societies are undergoing a theoreticalshift stemming from the realization that thesocial evolution of complex societies was more var-ied and complex than imagined. Given the need fornew directions in theory, the book proposesthat anthropologists look to political science, espe-cially the rational choice theory of collective action.Collective action theorists propose that state forma-tion results from the strategic behavior of rationaland self-interested actors who make up the polity, in-cluding a political elite and those outside the officialstructure of the state. The theory proposes that theform taken by a state will depend on the "bargainingpower", of rulers and taxpayers. Where tax-payers have more resources with which to bar-gain, it is predicted that rulers will concede benefitsto taxpayers and will agree to restrictions on theirpower. Recent Advances in

Palaeodemography

Data, Techniques, Patterns

The written data used by demographers essentiallycover the last five centuries. Since Homo Ergastermoved out of Africa around 1.8 million years agoand until the sub-contemporary periods, there isno data allowing us to reconstruct a demographichistory that can be interpreted with the traditionaltools of demography. If we want to be able to tackledemographic issues over a long evolutionary dura-tion, trying to reconstitute our human demograph-ic history and thinking out and testing macro-demo-graphic theories, we need to draw on sources otherthan written data and on techniques other than thosecommonly used by demographers. This necessari-ly means using information of every kind, from ar-chaeology, physical anthropology, paleontology, pri-matology or genetics, along with relevant models ofinterpretation. Violence in Europe

Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

Has violence changed over the centuries? Has it al-ways held the same meanings for us? Will it alwaysbe a given in society? Taking the sociocultural longview, Violence in Europe analyzes the prevalence androle of violence—from street crime to terrorist at-tacks, homicide to genocide—in the evolution of hu-man and national behavior. The editors and 14 col-leagues in history, anthropology, sociology, and psy-chology focus on Northern and Western Europe, ex-amining centuries of violent phenomena, from thecultural logic of the Middle Ages to today’s soccer ri-ots and security alerts. The contributors’ examina-tion of social constructions (honor codes, class andgender roles) and public ambivalence (acceptance, abhorrence, fascination) regarding violence shedsneeded light on current dynamics in law enforce-ment, political systems, and what many have termed"the civilization of violence." Findings from Britain,France, Ireland, Belgium, and Scandinavia explore:The paradoxes of ethnic violence and [..]

Rural Retirement Migration

This book examines the migration of older personsto rural retirement destinations in the United States. While most the majority of older persons are resi-dentially stable, those who migrate are dispropor-tionately likely to move to a rural community. More-over, with the aging of the baby boom generation, particular rural communities can expect even moretocontinue attracting older in-migrants in the future. The book examines rural retirement migration fromthe older in-migrants’ perspective and from the van-tage point of the destination communities to whichthey move. This integrated micro-macro approachpermits the authors to view older in-migrants as em-bedded in particular types of environments that fa-cilitate and/or constrain their opportunities for pro-ductive living during older age. It also permits theexamination of positive and negative aeffects of olderin-migration for destination communities. Sourcebook of Paleolithic

Transitions

Methods, Theories, and Interpretations

The Paleolithic period (2,000,000 years ago to 11,000years ago) has a rather varied archaeologi-cal record - partially owing to the transitional pro-cesses that took place within its subdivisions (Low-er Paleolithic: 2,000,000 years ago to 120,000 yearago; Middle Paleolithic: 300,000 years ago to 30,000years ago; and Upper Paleolithic: 40,000 year ago to11,000 year ago).  These transitional times arenot "set in stone" since new archaeological evidencecan move these transition dates significantly. Because of this, the changes that characterize theend of one phase and the beginning of anothermerits a closer examination and treatment. This sourcebook addresses the differ-ent transitional processes by examinatingthe nature and extent of behavioural changes, cul-tural patterns and differences that have been at-tributed to them. Forty years ago, the age-old battle against infectiousdiseases as a major threat to human health was be-lieved close to being won. However, by the late twen-tieth century, the increase of emerging and reemerg-ing infectious diseases was evident in both low andhigh income countries. About 30 new infectiousdiseases have been identified in the last 20 years.Among the "new" diseases, and most importantly, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidem-ic, with 40 million persons infected and 25 milliondeaths since its first description, presents one of themost significant health, societal and security chal-lenges facing the global community. The interactionof HIV/AIDS with tuberculosis, malaria and bacte-rial infections have increased HIV-related morbidi-ty and mortality, and in turn, the HIV pandemic hasbrought about devastating increases in tuberculosis.Understanding the population impact and the dy-namics of infection diseases in the most affected re-gion is critical to efforts to reduce the [..]

Among the “new” diseases, and most importantly, the Human Immunodeficien-cy Virus (HIV) epidemic, with 40 million persons in-fected and 25 million deaths since its first descrip-tion, presents one of the most significant health, so-cietal and security challenges facing the global com-munity. The interaction of HIV/AIDS with tubercu-losis, malaria and bacterial infections have increasedHIV-related morbidity and mortality, and in turn, the HIV pandemic has brought about devastating in-creases in tuberculosis. Understanding the popula-tion impact and the dynamics of infection diseases inthe most affected region is critical to efforts to reducethe morbidity and mortality of such infections, andfor decisions on where to use limited resources in thefight against infections. This book aims to contributeto these efforts by offering a demographic and epi-demiological perspective on emerging and reemerg-ing infections in sub-Saharan Africa.

Features

New highlights on the current burden of infectiousdiseases and on major trends in infectious mortali-ty, as well as on the major determinants of infectiousdisease spread, such as mobility and urbanization, governance, health care systems, poverty and socialexclusion Contributes to a better understanding ofthe reasons why sub-Saharan Africa is lagging somuch behind the other regions of the world in termsof [..]

Handbook of Community

Movements and Local

Organizations

This handbook takes voluntary associations as thestarting point for making sense of communities. Al-though the way associations and the organization oflocal social life are intertwined is one of the oldestapproaches to community study the way citizens andresidents come together informally to act and solveproblems has rarely been a primary focus. There islittle direct research or theory dealing with this sub-ject and beginning to correct that deficit is the taskof this book. The challenge accepted by this book isimportant because associations are central to impor-tant, developing areas of social theory and social ac-tion. For example, the theory of civil society is basedon the notion that informal groups, social move-ments, civic associations, and small formal nonprof-it organizations form a cohesive set of social organi-zations that integrate society. GIS Analysis of Health Disparities

Small Areas, Challenges and Applications

This book establishes a systematic small area ap-proach to the study of health disparities, based onthe integration of geospatial databases, census tractgeography and GIS. While recognizing the past fail-ures of health care policies to fully address the oftenegregious disparities within the U.S. and other na-tions, the opportunity now exists to advance our un-derstanding, imporvement and, perhaps ultimately, elimination of these long-standing imbalances. Thecontributions of this book are scholarly and originalwork that incorporate GIS and related spatial ana-lytic methods to pursue issues of health disparity atcensus tract geography. The objectives of this bookare to: -continue the growing science worldwide onsocio-economic and health inequalities -provide ev-idence of the pivotal role of small area analysis forGIS and policy makers -build a valid basis for em-ploying census tract and comparable geographicscale -demonstrate replicable methods of space-timemeasurement and GIS [..]

Prostitution and Human Trafficking

The book is based on the results of the project “Howmuch? A Pilot Study on Four Key EU Member andCandidate Countries on the Demand for TraffickedProstitution” financed by the European Commis-sion. The research is focused on the demand for traf-ficked prostitution and its driving factors in Italy,Romania, Sweden and the Netherlands. Many stud-ies have been conducted on the phenomenon oftrafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation, however very few were focused on the demand side. This book makes a first step to fill this gap. In par-ticular, the research attempts to improve knowledgeon the the demand for trafficked prostitution, us-ing an ethnographic methodology. In order to reachthis goal, a double approach was adopted: on the onehand, we developed a “virtual ethnography” focusedon the analysis of specialised forums/chats on theweb and an anonymous internet questionnaire waselaborated. Management and Restoration

Coastal habitats provide the link between the landand the sea. They are dynamic, combine to formecosystems of great complexity and provide signifi-cant areas for wildlife. Their landscapes are treasuredby visitors, painters and musicians. They also pro-vide locations for significant economic activity andare intimately bound up with fisheries, providingfood and shelter for some species of commerciallyexploited fish stocks. The habitats themselves pro-vide a buffer to tides and wave action, which may beparticularly important in areas where relative sea lev-el is rising and during storm periods. Managing theseassets in the face of continuing pressure from humanpopulations on a sustainable basis is a major task.

Fragmentation in Semi-Arid and

Arid Landscapes

Consequences for Human and Natural Systems

The global significance of the world’s rangelands islarge, with these arid and semi-arid systems mak-ing up almost 25% of the earth’s landscapes – andsupporting the livelihoods of more than 20 millionpeople. These ecosystems are also home to severalof the planet’s remaining megafauna, as well as oth-er important species. Yet fragmentation across theserangelands has significantly impaired the ability ofboth people and animals to compensate for tempo-ral heterogeneity in vegetation and water by exploit-ing its spatial heterogeneity, resulting in limited re-source availability. The case is developed that whilefragmentation arises from different natural, socialand economic conditions worldwide it creates simi-lar outcomes for human and natural systems. Withinformation from nine sites around the world the au-thors examine how fragmentation occurs, the pat-terns that result, and the consequences of fragmenta-tion for ecosystems and the people who depend onthem.

Features

First book to show how fragmentation of natural sys-tems influences human welfare, economies Uniquein global coverage, integration of social, natural sci-ences of fragmentation in rangelands Complex sys-tems are self sustaining, whereas simplified ones of-ten want capital inputs, subsidies Shows linkage ofmultiple scale analyses Rangeland use exclusivitydoes not promote human welfare or sustain naturalprocesses

The Convergence of Security, Technology, and the Law

Fighting Terror Online The Convergence of Security,Technology, and the Law Martin Charles Golumbic  The unprecedented events that have takenplace in recent years have led legislators and gov-ernments throughout the world to reconsider andrestructure their policies regarding security issues.Today, worldwide attention is being given to a newsecurity threat, in the form of global terrorism. Le-gal systems are being called upon to provide a re-sponse to these threats, in all areas of life, includ-ing the online environment. Among its many tools, global terror also uses advanced technological meth-ods. This fact presents a difficult challenge to poli-cymakers. Therefore, we have chosen to focus thisbook on the issue of formulating appropriate policyat the interface between security and technology, hu-man rights and economic policy. Coastal Towns in Transition

Local Perceptions of Landscape Change

Many coastal areas around the world are experi-encing dramatic landscape changes as a result of in-creased tourism development and due to the "seachange phenomenon" – the migration of affluent ur-banites to small coastal towns seeking beautiful, nat-ural surroundings. In response to these changes lo-cal residents in these places often complain that thedistinctive character of their towns and/or individualneighborhoods is being lost or degraded. This booklooks at how changes due to unsympathetic devel-opment of the built environment and modificationof the natural landscape are perceived to negativelyimpact on the character of small coastal towns. Thebook explores the concept of town character, and as-sociated notions of sense of place, genius loci andplace identity, as conceptualised by local residents inseveral coastal town communities along Australia’sGreat Ocean Road. Findings of a four year study in-volving over 1800 respondents from these communi-ties are used to explore theoretical and [..]

Evaluating Multiple Narratives

Beyond Nationalist, Colonialist, Imperialist Archaeologies

At the end of the 20th Century, archaeologists fromnon-Anglo-American countries started to becomevocal about the "traditional" interpretations of his-tory that archaeology was making. The "traditional"archaeology came from the predominantly white, male archaeologists from England and the UnitedStates going to other countries and interpreting thematerial culture from their point of view. This, ofcourse, is still happening but is becoming less accept-able nor accepted by the global world of archaeology. The goal of this volume is to use archaeological casestudies from around the world to evaluate the impli-cations of providing alternative interpretations of thepast. These cases also address key questions such as:Can multivocality (multiple interpretations of thepast) be separate from the theory of contemporaryAnglo-American archaeology; is multivocality rele-vant to local residents and non-Anglo-American ar-chaeologists; and can the close examination of alter-native interpretations contribute to [..]

Comparative Third Sector

Governance in Asia

Structure, Process, and Political Economy

Non-profit organizations, NGOs and other third sec-tor organizations are increasingly playing a centralrole in achieving and sustaining a prosperous econ-omy and a just civil society in countries around theworld. While their importance is widely acknowl-edged, their sustainability is not guaranteed and de-pends to a large extent on effectiveness and account-ability of their governance. In Europe and NorthAmerica, the governance of these organizations (set-ting directions and strategies; identifying and ensur-ing type and quality of goods and services; definingand maintaining relations among the stakeholders;relating the organization to its wider society) is gen-erally seen as the role of the board of directors orthe governing board. Design Conversation

Volume II

Dialogue as a Collective Means of Design Conversa-tion is the second volume edited by Patrick M. Jen-link and Bela H. Banathy to offer a cross-disciplinaryapproach to examining dialogue as a communica-tive medium. In this Compendium, the contributingauthors set forth their ideas, experiences, and per-spectives as the path of a learning journey—a jour-ney of new meaning, of new understanding, and ofbecoming self-aware of design conversation as futurecreating and consciousness evolving. In particular, this volume comes at a time when we as a global so-ciety are faced with the question of how we shape ouractions and in turn shape our future, through con-versation that is focused on resolving global conflictand fostering world peace. The volume evokes in thereader a realization that our greatest potential rests,in no small measure, with our collective capacity forcultural creativity and in our capacity to achieve newlevels of consciousness through dialogue and designconversation.

Contemporary Sociological Theory

An Integrated Multi-Level Approach

The overall organizing framework employed inthis textbook is based primarily on the distinctionsamong different levels of social reality. Theoristsroutinely distinguish between micro and macro lev-els of analysis. The micro level involves a focus onhuman agency and choice and the dynamics of per-sonal relationships and small-scale social systems ofvarious types, particularly those involving face-to-face encounters. The macro level, in contrast, is con-cerned with larger-scale social systems, typically atthe level of total societies. In addition to micro andmacro levels, various intermediate (or "meso") levelsof analysis may also be identified. This book is dis-tinctive as a theory text in giving explicit attentionto organizations, communities, markets, and socioe-conomic classes as meso-level social formations thatcan be identified between the micro level of face-to-face relations and the macro-level institutional struc-tures of the overall society. Legitimacy in European Nature

Conservation Policy

Case Studies in Multilevel Governance

Building forth upon recent developments in democ-racy theory that have identified multiple forms of le-gitimacy, this volume observes a EU-wide shift fromoutput legitimacy to input and throughput legitima-cy. Top down policy making is increasingly meetinglocal resistance. As a result, the importance for pol-icy makers of enhancing the democratic legitimacyof their policy plans has increased. In this volume, nine case studies are presented, seven case studies ofprotected areas in different countries (Belgium, Ger-many, Poland, Spain, Finland, France and the UK),and two case studies of protected species (the geesein the Netherlands, and the great Cormorant in Den-mark and Italy). These case studies are followed byextensive comments. The volume opens with an in-troductory chapter on the problematic productionof legitimacy in current European nature policy. Itconcludes with a chapter that situates the case stud-ies within the wider EU environmental policy andpolitical context.

tions in Economics and Other Social Sciences

The economic model of behaviour is fundamentalnot only in economic theory, but also in modern ap-proaches of other social sciences, above all in polit-ical science and law. This book provides a compre-hensive treatise of the general model, its philosophi-cal and methodological foundations and its applica-tions in different fields. In addition to the basic mod-el, extensions to its assumptions are examined to ac-count for complex applications like low-cost situa-tions with moral behaviour. Material Agency

Towards a Non-Anthropocentric Approach

The idea of an "agent" in the social sciences connotesa person or persons whose motivation, intentions orgoals bring about change. Along with this, agency isbelieved to be a uniquely human attribute. This be-lief comes from a deeply entrenched assumption thatagency is a property, attribute or capacity processedsolely by human entities, be they individual or col-lective. The corollary is that no human entities aredeemed to be devoid of agency – although they mayoften be entangled in human actions, they never havethe initiative and thus play a purely secondary role.In this volume, the editors are challenging this posi-tion and examine the possibility that agency is not asolely human property. Instead, this collection of ar-chaeologists, anthropologists, sociologists and othersocial scientists explore the symbiotic relationshipsbetween humans and material entities (a key openinga door, a speed bump raising a car) as they engagewith one another co-dependently. Such an approachhas important [..]

Features

The theory of agency is an important one in the so-cial sciences and has always been assumed to be an-thropocentric. This collection of archaeologists, an-thropologists, sociologists and other social scien-tists use their understanding of agency to demon-strate that material culture or non-human entities al-so have agency.

Re-sults from the research projects covered by this book, demonstrate that effective water management toolsand decisions-making practices, are needed in orderto complement integrated interventions for increas-ing the availability of supply and/or managing thegrowing demand for scarce water supplies. Further, the book attempts to bridge the gap between ideasand actions endorsed at the research-oriented envi-ronmental debate, and their translation into policymaking structures and programs in developed anddeveloping countries.

Handbook of Multilevel Analysis

Multilevel analysis is the statistical analysis of hier-archically and non-hierarchically nested data. Thesimplest example is clustered data, such as a sampleof students clustered within schools. Multilevel dataare especially prevalent in the social and behavioralsciences and in the bio-medical sciences. The mod-els used for this type of data are linear and nonlin-ear regression models that account for observed andunobserved heterogeneity at the various levels in thedata. This book presents the state of the art in multi-level analysis, with an emphasis on more advancedtopics. These topics are discussed conceptually, an-alyzed mathematically, and illustrated by empiricalexamples. The authors of the chapters are the leadingexperts in the field. Given the omnipresence of mul-tilevel data in the social, behavioral, and biomedicalsciences, this book is useful for empirical researchersin these fields. Prior knowledge of multilevel analysisis not required, but a basic knowledge of regression[..]

Handbook of Politics

State and Society in Global Perspective

Political sociology is the interdisciplinary study ofpower and the intersection of personality, societyand politics. The field also examines how the politi-cal process is affected by major social trends as wellas exploring how social policies are altered by vari-ous social forces. Political sociologists increasinglyuse a wide variety of relatively new quantitative andqualitative methodologies and incorporate theoriesand research from other social science cognate dis-ciplines. The contributors focus on the current con-troversies and disagreements surrounding the useof different methodologies for the study of politicsand society, and discussions of specific applicationsfound in the widely scattered literature where sub-stantive research in the field is published. This ap-proach will solidly place the handbook in a marketniche that is not occupied by the current volumeswhile also covering many of the same theoretical andhistorical developments that the other volumes cov-er. Confronting Scale in Archaeology

Issues of Theory and Practice

Without realizing, most archaeologists shift with-in a scale of interpretation of material culture. Ma-terial data is interpreted from the scale of an indi-vidual in a specific place and time and then shiftsto the complex dynamics of cultural groups extend-ing over time and space. This ignoring of scale is the“concession” archaeologists make to interpretation. The introduction of geographical information sys-tems (GIS) remote sensing, and virtual reality haveexpanded the scale at which data is interpreted evenmore, using multiple scales at the same time with-out recognizing the significance of their actions. Thisbook discusses the cultural, social and spatial aspectsof scale and its impact on archaeology in practicaland applicable cases. Landscapes under Pressure

Theory and Practice of Cultural Heritage Research and Preser-

vation

There is a growing realization that human intent andactivity are not easily separated from natural forcesin the shaping of landscapes. The pervasive Westerndichotomy of culture and nature has proved to be apoor basis for scientific research and long-term en-vironmental management. Humans have been ma-jor factors in environmental change for thousands ofyears using fire, intensive hunting and a wide rangeof agricultural strategies to transform most ecosys-tems on the earth long before the Industrial Revolu-tion. All these activites contribute to the making ofcultural landscapes which incorporate elements gen-erally classified in two groups: tangible empirical ev-idence of human behavior, and intangible, symbolicmeanings. This book investigates the newly emerg-ing scope of interests and project agendas to investi-gate and preserve cultural landscapes. Fundamental Trends in City

Development

The Reinvented City reflects on externity, the prin-cipal feature of a reinvented city. Three fundamen-tal trends of the city are investigated, "discomposed","generic" and "segregated" phenomena with the lossof the city as a space of social interaction and com-munication. The interpretative categories of exter-nity are the intermediate spaces, the counterspaces, the void, the edge, the territory and the environment, places on which to base the future city project. Im-portant questions are posed: What is the true pub-lic sphere in contemporary societies? What is thecontemporary public space corresponding to it? Inwhat way can the city project construct contempo-rary public space?

Features

This book provides a theoretical contribution to theproject for the city departing from an interpretationof real international situations. A comparative analy-sis is made of the different cultural positions, whichare not configured as simple recognition but as ele-ments for the project. Landscape Analysis using

Geospatial Tools

The subject of Landscape Analysis using Geospa-tial Tools is the combination of geospatial tools suchas remote sensing, geographic information systems(GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), geostatisticsand geovisualization (e.g., 3D displays, fly throughs, annimation) to analyze landscapes, assess humanimpacts on earth resources, visualize changes overtime and conduct research in landscape ecology. This book truly bridges two broad disciplines, ecol-ogy and geography. More specifically, it integratesresearch and techniques in landscape ecology andgeographic information science (GISci) which, inturn, encompasses GIS, remote sensing, GPS, spatialstatistics and geovisualization. It is anticipated thatthis publication will be of interest to a wide audience.Case studies highlight the use of geospatial tools toassess the ecological impacts of human activities andassist in decision making for managers and policymakers.

A data warehouse stores large volumes of historicaldata required for analytical purposes. This data is ex-tracted from operational databases; transformed in-to a coherent whole using a multidimensional mod-el that includes measures, dimensions, and hierar-chies; and loaded into a data warehouse during theextraction-transformation-loading (ETL) process.Malinowski and Zimányi explain in detail conven-tional data warehouse design, covering in particularcomplex hierarchy modeling. Additionally, they ad-dress two innovative domains recently introducedto extend the capabilities of data warehouse systems, namely the management of spatial and temporal in-formation. Their presentation covers different phas-es of the design process, such as requirements spec-ification, conceptual, logical, and physical design. They include three different approaches for require-ments specification depending on whether users, op-erational data sources, or both are the driving forcein the requirements gathering process, and they [..]

Clashes of Knowledge

"Clashes of Knowledge" is the first volume in a bookseries called "Knowledge and Space" dealing withspatial disparities of knowledge and the impact of thespatial context on the production and application ofknowledge. The contributions in this book explorethe conflicts between various types of knowledge, es-pecially between orthodox and heterodox knowledgesystems, which range from religious fundamental-ism to heresies within the scientific community itself.Does the traditional distinction between "belief" and"knowledge" still make sense? How is the differencebetween knowledge and belief understood in differ-ent cultural contexts? How have the religious-basedknowledge systems been displaced in their hegemon-ic role by "scientific" knowledge? In which ways dothe agents of hegemonic, orthodox knowledge inter-act with the representatives of deviating, heterodoxknowledge? These and many other questions are ad-dressed by scholars of geography, history of science, philosophy, psychology, religious [..]

“Human history becomes more and more a racebetween education and catastrophe.” H. G. WellsDespite a growing awareness of the importance offreshwater, human actions continue to degrade thefreshwater ecosystems upon which we depend. Mostregions of the world face serious impending prob-lems related to the availability and efficient/equitabledistribution of freshwater – these problems becomeexacerbated when both surface water and groundwa-ter flows between and among multiple countries. Monitoring and Modelling Lakes

and Coastal Environments

Lakes and coastal wetlands all over the world are ide-al places for human habitation, fisheries, industries, shipping and recreation. Habitat environments oflakes and coastal wetlands are deteriorating due totheir exploitative use and improper management. Asrapid development and population growth continuein coastal areas, environmental degradation and overexploitation will further erode the biodiversity andundermine the productivity of these unique ecosys-tems. Lakes and coastal wetlands are transitional ar-eas between dry terrestrial and permanent aquaticecosystems and are recognised as highly productive.Their importance in socio-economic frontiers hasbeen increasingly felt. Over 200 rivers and lakes inthe world are shared by two or more countries. Thisenvisages their international importance. Various ef-forts are currently underway to develop technologiesand systems for successful management of lakes andcoastal wetlands both at national and internationallevels. However, conflicting [..]

Organized Crime

Culture, Markets and Strategies

The term "global organized crime" is often used torefer to worldwide illegitimate activities of criminalgroups and networks and is associated with the so-called "globalization process". Although it can not bedenied that due to economic, technological, politicaland cultural developments, borders have disappearedor changed, markets have extended, mobility andcommunication facilities have improved, it wouldbe a major fallacy to study organized crime and itscontainment solely from a global perspective. Thecentral premise of this book is that we need morein-depth, empirically funded, knowledge on orga-nized crime in specific situational contexts, ratherthan trying to predict how organized crime mightdevelop throughout the world. The sixteen contribu-tions in the book deal with various aspects of orga-nized crime (drugs, diamonds, human trafficking,eco-crime, conflict resolution, underground banking, crime facilitators) in various parts of the world (Sici-ly, Sinai, the US, Quebec, Amsterdam, [..]

Otto Neurath’s Economics in

Context

Otto Neurath (1882-1945) was a highly unorthodoxthinker both in philosophy and economics. He pro-posed a radically expanded scope of economic anal-ysis that would facilitate a comparative and system-atic study of the impact of a great variety of econom-ic and political measures on a population’s well-be-ing. Neurath regarded the controversial and wide-ly misunderstood concept of calculation in kind asan indispensable instrument for anyone (economistor politician) who sought to analyze economic rela-tionships from a wider perspective than that of priceformation under market conditions. What is the im-pact of alternative (economic, political or organisa-tional) measures on living conditions? What are theappropriate methods to compare and to rationallychoose among alternative measures? In Neurath’sopinion, answers to these questions are crucial forevery democratic government. The contributionsto this sparkling new book conclude that Neurathtouched on many of the most critical problems ofeconomic [..]

Water Politics, Water Policies and

Development Cooperation

Local Power Plays and Global Governance

The key challenge in the water sector is not a lack ofwater, of knowledge, of financial resources or tech-nology. In general, it is the political sphere that de-termines if water problems are solved or not, if peo-ple get access to water or not, if our natural resourcebase is sustainably developed or overexploited. Pol-itics – the process of decision-making for groups ofpeople, involving the authoritative allocation of val-ues – the actors, their interests and interactions de-termine if progress is made or hindered. The out-come of water politics is then reflected in water pol-itics, the substantive outcome of the political inter-play in terms of regulations, action programmes orspending priorities of the respective public or privateentities.

Advances in 3D Geo Information

Systems

The book will focus on comparing several types of3D models (and this is unique). Due to the rapid de-velopments in sensor techniques more and more 3Ddata becomes available. Effective algorithms for (se-mi) automatic object reconstruction are required.Integration of existing 2D objects with height datais a non-trivial process and needs further research. The resulting 3D models can be maintained in sever-al types of 3D models: TEN (Tetrahedral Network),Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) models, Regu-lar Polytopes, TIN Boundary representation and 3Dvolume quad edge structure, layered/topology mod-els, voxel based models, 3D models used in urbanplanning/polyhedrons, and n-dimensional modelsincluding time. 3D analysis and 3D simulation tech-niques explore and extend the possibilities in spatialapplications.

International Migration, Social

Advancement

An Ethnography of Socioglobal Mobility

Contemporary migration involves a dramatic para-dox. Although much of what is considered interna-tional or transnational migration today transformspeople of a wide range of social standings in the em-igration countries into laborers at the bottom socialand economic ranks of the immigration countries, millions of individuals worldwide seek to migrate in-ternationally. International Migration, Social Demo-tion, and Imagined Advancement argues that thisparadox cannot be explained for as long as commonpreconceptions about immigrants’ economic better-ment thwart even questioning why individuals whoare not threatened by famine or war willingly pur-sue their demotion abroad. Recognizing immigrants’decline as such, this book proposes viewing contem-porary migration as socioglobal mobility. Geomorphology of Desert

Environments

About one-third of the Earth’s land surface expe-riences a desert climate, and this area supports ap-proximately 15% of the planet’s population. Thispercentage continues to grow, and with this growthcomes the need to acquire and apply an understand-ing of desert geomorphology. Such an understand-ing is vital in managing scarce and fragile resourcesand in mitigating natural hazards. This authorita-tive reference book is comprehensive in its coverageof the geomorphology of desert environments, andis arranged thematically. It begins with an overviewof global deserts, proceeds through treatments ofweathering, hillslopes, rivers, piedmonts, lake basins, and aeolian surfaces, and concludes with a discussionof the role of climatic change. Written by a team ofinternational authors, all of whom are active in thefield, the chapters cover the spectrum of desert geo-morphology.

International Perspectives on Maps

and the Internet

The Internet has redifined how maps are used. Nolonger restricted to paper, maps are now transmit-ted almost instantly and delivered to the user in afraction of the time required to distribute maps onpaper. They are viewed in a more timely fashion.Weather maps, for example, are updated continous-ly throughout the day. Most importantly, maps onthe Internet are more interactive. They are accessedthrough a hyperlinking structure that makes it possi-ble to engage the map user on a higher-level than ispossible with a map on paper. Finally, the Internet ismaking it possible to more easily distribute differentkinds of cartographic displays such as animations. The Internet presents the map user with both a fastermethod of map distribution and different forms ofmapping. This book provides an international per-spective on this growing area of information dissem-ination.

A Space of Their Own

The Archaeology of Nineteenth Century Lunatic Asylums in

Britain, South Australia and Tasmania

The history of lunatic asylums – what do we reallyknow about them? Films and television programshave portrayed them as places of horror where thepatients are restrained and left to listen to the criesof their fellow inmates in despair. But what was theworld of nineteenth century lunatic asylums real-ly like? Are these images true? This book will ex-plore this world using the techniques of historicalarchaeology and history. In the late eighteenth andearly nineteenth centuries the advent of new treat-ments for insanity based on moral therapy and non-restraint, and an increasing social awareness of theconditions in which the insane were being kept ledto a new focus on the provisions made for the insanein “madhouses”, lunatic asylums and hospitals. Inresponse to this new focus those interested in the re-form of these places and the new treatment regimesbegan to describe what lunatic asylums should be ifthey were going to bring the insane back to sanity. Geographic Information Science

and Public Participation

Computer-mediated participation is at the cross-roads. In the early heady days of the digital revo-lution, access to "high" technologies such as GISpromised the empowerment of marginalized com-munities by providing data and information that waspreviously hidden away from public view. To a greatextent, this goal has been achieved at least in the U.S.and Western Europe – data about a range of govern-ment initiatives and raw data about different aspectsof spatial planning such as land use, community fa-cilities, property ownership are available a mouse-click away. Now, that we, the public, have access toinformation, are we able to make better plans forthe future of our cities and regions? Are we more in-clusive in our planning efforts? Are we able to fos-ter collaborative governance structures mediated bydigital technologies? In the book, these issues will bediscussed using a three-part structure. The first partof the book will be theoretical – it will review the lit-erature in the field, establish [..]

Case Studies in Environmental

Archaeology

The purpose of Case Studies in Environmental Ar-chaeology, Second Edition is to highlight stud-ies addressing significant anthropological issues inthe Americas from the perspective of environmen-tal archaeology. Environmental archaeology encom-passes the application of biological and geologicaltechniques to the study of human/environmentalinteractions. Each chapter is an original or revisedwork by internationally-recognized geoarchaeolo-gists, human biologists, paleoethnobotanists, andzooarchaeologists. Each study demonstrates how andwhy the information obtained using environmentaltechniques is important to anthropologists insteadof describing, critiquing, or advocating a method. These ethnographic, geological, and biological casestudies successfully demonstrate the application ofenvironmental science toward the resolution of ques-tions related to human behavior in the past. This sec-ond edition is based on the 1996 book of the same ti-tle. The editors have invited back a number of [..]

Global Risk Governance:

Concept and Practice Using the IRGC Framework

The establishment of the international risk gov-ernance council (IRGC) was the direct result ofwidespread concern within the public sector, the cor-porate world, academia, and society at large that thecomplexity and interdependence of health, environ-mental, and technological risks facing the world wasmaking the development and implementation of ad-equate risk governance strategies ever more difficult.IRGC set out to conduct a thorough examination ofthe fundamental principles and structures that guidethe way emerging risks and issues are identified, as-sessed, managed, and communicated. From this pro-cess, a framework for risk governance was developedand proposed, which forms part I of this volume. This IRGC framework was then subjected to rigor-ous peer review and comments from other expertsand the public at large were invited; these commentsmake up part II of the volume. The framework wasalso tested by applying it in a series of diverse, inter-national case studies on such diverse topics as [..]

Governance Changes in the New

York City Schools

Throughout the last forty years, the New York Citypublic school system has changed its governancestyle a number of times. Through the switch fromcentralized to decentralized to mayoral governance,New York has been an example (for good and bad)that many other large cities parallel or follow. ThisBook focuses on the political dynamics of the gov-erning overhaul and how the management styles ofMayor Bloomberg and School Chancellor Klein af-fected its design and implementation in the Mayor’sfirst term (which ends at the beginning of next year). But to be clear – This is not a New York City phe-nomena. Mayoral governance is happening in otherlarge cities, which is stimulated in large part by busi-ness leaders, big city mayors, and states concernedabout how the schools have contributed to the de-clining global competitiveness of the U.S. Economyand to continued social and economic problems ofinner cities.

Assesses the first three years of Mayor Bloomberg’sradical overhaul of the NYC schools The analysis ofthis governance asks the question: To what extentcan the business management paradigm be trans-ferred to search a public section agency?

Frontiers of Globalization Research

Theoretical and Methodological Approaches

For more than twenty years globalization has beena prominent topic in the social sciences and human-ities because it deals with processes that impact allsocieties at the international, national, and local lev-els. Controversies and conflicting approaches havedominated this field of studies. To understand thevariety and strength of different approaches, the edi-tor asked many of their leading exponents to outlinetheir own “research framework”. Readings in Public Choice and

Constitutional Political Economy

Public choice is the study of behavior at the intersec-tion of economics and political science. Since the pi-oneering work of Duncan Black in the 1940s, publicchoice has developed a rich literature, drawing fromsuch related perspectives as history, philosophy, law,and sociology.to analyze political decision making(by citizen-voters, elected officials, bureaucratic ad-ministrators, lobbyists, and other "rational" actors)in social and economic context, with an emphasis onidentifying disparities between individual and col-lective goals. In Readings in Public Choice and Con-stitutional Political Economy, Charles Rowley andFriedrich Schneider have assembled an internationalarray of leading authors to present a comprehensiveand accessible overview of the field and its applica-tions. Territorial Cohesion

The various regions within the EU are marked by ahigh degree of disparity with regard to their econom-ic performance and productivity, and as regards theirlabour markets. Facing these regional differences, the task of regional and spatial sciences is to developconcepts and strategies to reduce and prevent terri-torial imbalances. Thus "territorial cohesion" standsfor a more balanced spatial development, and aimsto improve integration throughout the EU. Althoughthe term is used in many EU documents and strate-gies, its meaning remains vague and unclear. The sci-entific articles in this annual deal with the interpreta-tions of this term, the challenges of European spatialdevelopment policy, and the problems and conceptsinvolved in achieving territorial cohesion. Medical Decisions, Estrogen and

Aging

The decision making process that underlies ovarianhormone therapy (HT) is fallible. Two recent large-scale studies, one in the USA (Women’s Health Ini-tiative or WHI) and the other in Great Britain, cast anegative light on the use of hormone therapy. Bothhave received considerable attention in the media. Thus, the decision for women to go on hormonetherapy (HT) remains controversial. There is an his-torical oscillation of beliefs related in part to expecta-tions of the medicinal value of HT over longer-termuse beyond the initial peri-menopausal period. Stud-ies thought to resolve issues surrounding the efficacyof HT were perhaps over-stated. Confusion still per-meates the decision making with regard to HT. Overzealous advertising, and exaggerated understandingof the results (negative or positive) undermines pa-tient and physician decision making.

Cultural Heritage and Human

Rights

In today’s world, there seems to be no corner of theworld that has not been affected by globalization –for good and for bad. While the world becomes morehegemonized socially and culturally, local communi-ties are fighting to preserve their way of life as partof their heritage. Travel and cultural institutions usethis “uniqueness” to promote travel and tourism;and while this brings in revenue and exposure, cul-tural heritage sites that were preserved by virtue oftheir isolation are now being severely damaged andeven destroyed. At the same time, there is a growingawareness that while this unique heritage is used todefine a community, society or nation, it also can bea basis for conflict. The volume addresses a deeplypolitical aspect of heritage preservation and manage-ment as it relates to human rights. People and Things

A Behavioral Archaeological Perspective

The core of archaeology is the relationship betweenpeople and things. Left without informants and, inmany cases, textual data, archaeologists strive to re-construct past life through the window of artifacts:things made, used, and modified by individuals whileparticipating in the activities of everyday life. Ac-cording to behavioral archaeologists, our ability tounderstand the relationship between people andthings in the present is the foundation for archae-ological reconstruction of the past. This compre-hensive text provides an explanation of BehavioralArchaeology by the founders of the theory. Twenty years in the making, this work will be anessential tool for new scholars as well as experi-enced members of the field.  It offers a clearoverview of the theory of Behavioral Archaeology, updated with responses to criticism, and demon-strates its application in six diverse case studies.

Handbook of the Sociology of

Emotions

For almost thirty years, sociologists have increasinglytheorized about and conducted research on humanemotions. Surprisingly, it was not until the 1970sthat the sociology of emotions emerged as a coherentfield of inquiry. What makes this late date surprisingis that it is now obvious that human behavior, inter-action, and organization are driven by emotions. Itwas an immense oversight for emotions to be de-em-phasized in sociological theorizing and research formost of its 175 year history. Since the 1970s, howev-er, the study of emotions has accelerated and is nowat the forefront of sociological analysis. This book isdesigned to bring the reader up to date on the theoryand research traditions that have proliferated in theanalysis of human emotions. Key figures who havecarried the sociology of emotions to its current levelof prominence review their own work and the workof others who have made contributions to a particu-lar approach to the study of emotions. Religion and Family Links

Neofunctionalist Reflections

For many, the experience of religion and the familyare organically connected: first exposure to religionoften comes through the family, and, in families thatpractice a religion, it often has a shaping effect ontheir traditions, roles, practices, or structure. The au-thor of this text captures the important relationshipbetween religion and the family with a review of rele-vant literature on the subject, synthesizing it withina theoretical framework. The work begins with an in-troduction to the neofunctionalist theoretical frame-work of the family. This framework is connected toa multidimensional understanding of religion. Witha focus on systems and a holistic interpretation ofreligion, the author uses a systems approach to con-struct a synthesis of the salient literature on the linkbetween religion and the family. Four systems thatare embedded in the Neofunctionalist theoreticalframework are presented: the chronosystem (includ-ing time and history), the organic system (that whichis part of [..]

The Baboon in Biomedical Research

The present volume was written to provide anoverview of many diverse areas of biomedical re-search to which the baboon has made and contin-ues to make important contributions. Each chapterreviews the recent literature on the topic, discusseswork in progress, and presents the authors’ visionof research opportunities and likely future contribu-tions of the baboon model to human medicine. Thebaboon is a relative newcomer to the repertoire ofnonhuman primates used in biomedical research. However, in less than 50 years since its first use inthe U.S. it has become one of the most popular lab-oratory primate species. It is larger than the otherwidely used monkey species, making it advantageousfor many types of experiments and technological de-velopments. It is extraordinarily hardy and highly fe-cund in captivity. It closely resembles humans in avariety of physiological and disease processes, suchas cholesterol metabolism, early stages of atheroscle-rosis, and alcoholic liver disease. Its chromosomes[..]

Gender in Prevention and Health

Promotion

Policy – Reserach – Practice

Over the past years, governments have committedthemselves to including gender issues in policy-mak-ing, with a view to advancing women’s equality. Atthe same time, there is increasing recognition thatthe systematic consideration of gender is essential tohigh quality health and social programs. This bookwill bridge the gaps between the players in research, politics and policy. It will present models of bestpractice from different countries linking differentfields. The main questions are: How can gender anddiversity analysis be made necessary and practical inprevention and health promotion? What strategiesare effective in fostering gender mainstreaming andpreventing gender bias? And how can they be imple-mented in politics, research, education and practice? The challenge of this book is to combine the verydifferent ways of generating and using "knowledge"from this discipline with the focus on the shared goalof enhancing prevention and health promotion un-der the gender perspective.

Political Economies of Landscape

Change

Places of Integrative Power

"Places of Power: Political Economies of LandscapeChange" asks how politics and economics trans-form the landscapes we inhabit. This volume ex-plores the connections between political economyand landscape change through a series of conceptu-al essays and case studies. In so doing, it speaks toa broad readership of landscape architects, geogra-phers, and related fields of social and environmentalresearch. The Changing Governance of the

Sciences

The Advent of Research Evaluation Systems

The establishment of national systems of retrospec-tive research evaluations is one of the most signifi-cant of recent changes in the governance of science. In many countries, state attempts to manage publicscience systems and improve their quality have trig-gered the institutionalisation of such systems, whichvary greatly in their methods of assessing researchperformance, and consequences for universities. Thecontributions to this volume discuss, inter alia, thebirth and development of research evaluation sys-tems as well as the reasons for their absence in theUnited States, the responses by universities and aca-demics to these new governance regimes, and theirconsequences for the production of scientific knowl-edge. By integrating new theoretical approaches withcountry studies and studies of general phenomenasuch as university rankings and bibliometric evalua-tions, the book shows how these novel state steeringmechanisms are changing the organisation of scien-tific knowledge production and [..]
