Working at Take Art I am constantly reminded of the value of what we do, not just in supporting artists, bringing high quality entertainment to Somerset and connecting communities, but in actually improving well being and mental health.

I recently went to one of the final shows of the Word/Play project, a two-year theatre and wellbeing initiative, funded in main by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The project, run by Mark and Sarah from the Theatre department, worked with spoken word artists, forum theatre and community theatre to help build self esteem, improve mental health, raise important social issues and bring together people and communities. And it’s worked.

I am going to use Bernie as an example, a 70-year-old man living in Yeovil who took part in the spoken word phase of the project. He attended eight weekly sessions run by a professional performance poet and was among 50 participants with either mental health, confidence or learning challenges. At the beginning of the project, many of the participants struggled to speak in a group, let alone find their voice and use it on stage. By the end every single one of them performed their words live on stage in front of hundreds of people.

Bernie said the experience was ‘life changing’, improving his self-esteem and confidence. His physical appearance

changed and he appeared taller, with a new haircut and clothes. There was even a marked improvement in his speech impediment. When he returned a year later to take part in another series of spoken word workshops Bernie became a self appointed mentor, encouraging and supporting a group of adults living in sheltered accommodation.

Bernie is only one story out of the thousands of people Take Art work with, entertain and support every year. Whether they are young dancers given the chance to perform on a professional stage, excluded kids finding a passion to make music or adults using their creativity to overcome depression or social exclusion.

To find out about all our work and activities have a look inside this Spring programme.

Berlin Cabaret The Bluebirds

Bold, sassy fun, oozing with pizzazz

Take a splendid evening stroll, in both mind and body, to visit the Berlin Cabaret and hear the purring songs of Marlene Dietrich and other sultry candlelit crooners.

The two passionate protagonists are singing duo Sasha Herriman and Tami Tal, also known as The Bluebirds, famed for mixing gorgeous vocals, high-spirited comedy and their own unique twist of irreverence; all accompanied by classical pianist John Human.

In Berlin Cabaret, Sasha and Tami bring to life songs of the era: music by Weill, Hollaender and Spoliansky, side by side with great operatic favourites. This is bold, sassy fun, full of glamour and lyrical soprano melodies… And if you want a chance to join in, they can get you singing too.

“Beautiful singing voices, outrageous outfits.... cabaret with a unique edge.”

It’s a Wonderful LifeFarnham Maltings

An iconic movie brought to the stage.................................................

Welcome to Bedford Falls. Welcome to small town America. Welcome to the Farnham Maltings winter show. Frank Capra’s classic 1946 movie is brought magically to life by theatre company Farnham Maltings, who know exactly how to turn a dismal January evening into a small celebration of life.

Following the success of Miracle on 34th Street, Farnham Maltings is now reviving the struggles and joys of 1940s small town America in the villages and towns of England.

It’s a Wonderful Life follows the now iconic story of George Bailey, a desperate middle-aged clerk who discovers (with a little help from Clarence, the apprentice angel) the difference his meager life has made to his family, friends and home town.

Using their own, inimitable style the company has created two hours of theatre to warm the long winter nights.

Buffalo Gals Old-Time Country String Band

Bringing fun wherever they go...

The ever-popular Buffalo Gals are back with their lively, authentic and highly entertaining old-time country six-piece string band.

Champion Maryland fiddler, Kate Lissauer, leads the band, which, in keeping with its age-old tradition, travels the rural countryside, bringing music and fun wherever it goes.

The music is a mix of original writing and traditional roots music of the southern United States.

The visually and musically thrilling element of percussive step-dance is a dramatic part of the band’s performance, and never fails to raise the excitement levels.

“Fantastic, we enjoyed every moment, the show was an utter delight and SO foot-tapping.” Audience member, Bishops Lydeard

Dr. Livingstone I PresumeMiracle Theatre

An expedition in entertainment

Miracle Theatre deftly combines its own inimitable style with the wonder of Victorian Music Hall to tell the story of one man’s obsession to discover the heart of Africa and transform an entire continent single handed. It also tells the tale of the woman he left behind…

Both a hurrah to courage and endurance and a swipe at the 19th century ideals of imperialism, chauvinism and hypocrisy,

Dr. Livingstone I Presume opens the pages on a curious slice of history, all served up with a magnificent mélange of musicality and melodrama.

Fumi Okiji’s Old Time Jazz Band

Unapologetically old time jazz.................................................

Fumi Okiji’s Old Time Jazz Band is a joyous celebration of the great tradition of jazz song. The band takes in the blues, New Orleans, black vaudeville, Louis, Ella and Billie Holiday, as it travels from jazz’s inception, through the interwar years.

Vocalist and leader Fumi is accompanied by a world-class lineup, including London based clarinetist Idris Rahman, who is taking a break from own band Soothsayers and his regular touring with Arun Gosh.

On strings, Ben Davis, the UK's foremost jazz cellist, joins exceptional guitarist Stuart Hall. Roy Dodds, who plays drums and percussion completes the band. As well as playing with Jacqui Dankworth, Roy was part of the 80s acoustic pop band, Fairground Attraction.

“It is unapologetically old time jazz and at the heart is Fumi’s rich, sonorous, contralto accompanied by a stellar band of musicians.” Simisola Balogun

Dracula Rabbit Theatre

Bats about Somerset... .................................................

The team that brought you the award winning Great Expectations dig their talented talons into Bram Stoker’s ultimate vampire fable. Be warned, this monstrous, disturbing (and completely batty) tale of dark deeds and the undead, will leave you quivering from the eyeballs to the toenails.

The show has been written by Andrew McPherson, directed by Simon Harvey and stars the outrageously versatile Cornish performer David Mynne, owner of one of the world’s most malleable faces. Mynne (from Kneehigh Theatre) conjures up a cast of dozens in his joyfully versatile one-man performance.

Touring with a light set and generally providing all the sound effects himself, Mynne manages to stay true to the story but adds his own modern day anarchy, thanks to his natural ability for physical comedy.

“Listen to them….the children of the night. What music they make.”

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë’s is the story of Heathcliff and Cathy’s passionate, yet destructive, love affair and is without doubt, one of the most tragic and infamous love stories ever told.

Himalayan JourneysBen Osborne

Stunning images and commentary .................................................

Himalayan Journeys is a story told in words and photographs by TV wildlife filmmaker Ben Osborne. It features two winter journeys to Ladakh and Zanskar. Lying just ‘behind’ the main Himalayan ranges, these ancient kingdoms are effectively cut off from the outside world in winter by heavy snowfall and temperatures of -30˚C. The plan was to look for snow leopards and to find them, the team trekked up frozen rivers, crossed lung-busting mountain passes, travelled through uninhabited valleys and visited ancient monasteries (much to the surprise of the resident monks).

Spiltmilk say Dance

Dance like no one is watching.................................................

Part performance, part social commentary, Spiltmilk say Dance brilliantly reinvents the social dance crazes that have swept sticky dance floors for decades, the kind of dances we all end up doing at discos, weddings and family gatherings.

The first half of the evening sees the company’s talented three dancers put their unique spin on familiar dance favourites; think Disco dancing to Sinatra, the YMCA to Mozart and The Twist on chairs.

In the second half it’s your turn, as everyone is invited to join in. You’ll get to have a go at long-forgotten folk dances you learned at school, daft novelty dances you only do at weddings and elegant ballroom moves, all to some unexpected musical choices played live by musician Sam Dunkley.

Brimming with nostalgia, wit and mind-boggling moves, Spiltmilk Say Dance is a brilliant family friendly event.

From spirals of pebbles to weighing feathers and pinecones on a seesaw we have looked at how everyday resources, toys and equipment can be used to explore and test simple concepts of scale, size and weight. Designed to use children’s natural play and interest as starting points, we have supported staff to look at their environment with new eyes, with lots of ideas to incorporate in their settings.

Our Work

The first day of school...The Importance of Transition Training in Early Years

Take Art works with Early Years settings, children and parents all over the South West to inspire young minds and use creativity to help wellbeing, child development and family life.

One of the biggest challenges for young children is the transition from nursery or home to their first school experience. Over the last year Take Art has been working with clusters of Early Years settings, such as child minders, children's centres, nurseries and Primary schools, running training sessions on how to make these transitions easier for children and families.

For example, through the training we have been able to support 50 Early Years staff from the Chard area to attend two creative training sessions, one focusing on language and literacy and the second on numeracy.

“Already practitioners are noticing a difference in the communication skills of the

Now in its final year, The Octagon Dance Development Project, which is funded by Arts Council England, is really making an impact on audiences and local communities, with more people in South Somerset getting excited about dance!

Take Art is supporting the Octagon Theatre with the project, helping to bring additional shows to the Yeovil stage, including Jasmin Vardimon, Motionhouse and ZoieLogic. Young people and professional dance artists have also had the opportunity to work with some of the above, along with Richard Alston and Twist & Pulse.

Motionhouse Residency 2014In February/March 2014 Motionhouse worked extensively with the dance community, including dance teachers and professionals. They led open workshops for young people and visited different schools and colleges. They helped to create a ten minute dance

piece with Somerset Youth Dance Company, which was used as the curtain raiser for their show Broken (see above image), performed at the Octagon in front of nearly 500 people.

ZoieLogic Residency 2015This years the ‘Octagon Associate Choreographer’ has been awarded to Zoie Golding, artistic director of ZoieLogic.

Adam Burgan, Entertainment Manager at The Octagon Theatre said “We are delighted that Zoie will be our Associate Choreographer. Zoie is a dynamic and engaging artist and she really does put the audience at the heart of her work particularly working to develop new audiences and introduce people to contemporary dance for the first time"

Creative learning for children and young people across Somerset Some People Have Too Many Legs

by Contact and Jackie HaganMarch - May 2015

Some People Have Too Many Legs is the provocative title of Jackie Hagan’s new show for KS4/5 and their families. Last year, Jackie was forced to ask herself “what do you do when your world is turned upside down?” Her answer “keep laughing” clearly comes across in this new production.

Jackie's extraordinary story is not just about what actually happened to her but the strong coping mechanisms she developed to keep her optimism alive.

Jackie also leads inspiring drama workshops. A perfect show for tacking diversity in school. We have huge discounts available for two lucky schools so get in touch soon at [email protected]

There was even an inspired ‘Pick up your Pooch’s Poo’ campaign spearheaded by the Youth Council.

Towards the end of the project we encouraged people to ‘Keep the Change’ in their community and to reflect on the differences they had achieved. This became apparent in the way people had learnt new skills, explored their creativity, increased their confidence and made new friends.

The two-year initiative that brought together theatre, spoken word and digital media to inspire change has come to a powerful conclusion, with two large-scale community projects, What Change in Burnham & Highbridge and The Wondrous Tales of Whiteball Tunnel in Wellington.

What Change

What Change in Burnham & Highbridge asked the community to think about what small, but significant, change they could create with the gift of £10, to make their towns the best place to be.

Throughout the summer of 2014, over 80 residents responded to the '£10 Challenge' in an incredible range of ways, including beach poetry; yarnbombing a shelter into an amazing site-specific artwork and creating beautiful dance pieces that explored the relationship between the two towns.

The Wondrous Tales of Whiteball Tunnel

Meanwhile, over in Wellington, we teamed up with Actiontrack and Forkbeard Fantasy to create the community play The Wondrous Tales of Whiteball Tunnel, which ran as a nine-month project, featuring a cast of over 50 people and played to sell out audiences over five shows. We gathered many uplifting stories from people who took part in the final stages of the Word/Play project: “Working with a professional team opened new doors and learning. I feel a part of this community: a sense of belonging.”

The Thing Is…

We were also delighted to produce a new version of The Thing Is…(the spoken word phase of Word/Play that took place in early 2013). Supported by Yarlington Housing Group, the project, which took place in the autumn, enabled more people in South Somerset to boost their creativity and wellbeing through the spoken word. You can read Bernie's story on Page 3.

Due to the huge success of every phase of the Word/Play project we already have several ideas in the pipeline for a new theatre and wellbeing initiative in Somerset starting in 2015.

A Horse-Drawn Rural Tour

Coming to your village green ......................................................................Horse Tale and the Rural Academy Theater are a collaboration of artists from North Carolina and Bristol, creating theatre for rural audiences in response to the growing urbanisation of our culture.

Their tour brings performers, musicians, sculptors & dancers to village greens, school fields, riverbanks and farms, via horse pulled wagon and bicycle power. They perform evenings of original theatre under the stars using their wagon as a stage, accompanied by live klezmer and traditional Appalachian music.

It sounds wonderful and the good news is that they will be travelling through the Poldens and Mendips from 14-30 June and, if you are near the route, there is still time to book them to stop off in your village or market town. Each village will need to provide an outdoor performance spot and somewhere for the performers to camp and the horses to graze.

Email [email protected] to find out costs and details of how to bring this unique travelling theatre troupe to your community.

The event also aims to provoke innovation and big ideas as well as stimulate and encourage lively debate.

It takes place at Williams Hall, Stoke St Gregory on Saturday 21 March. If you would like to take part please register your interest by emailing [email protected]

Future Projects

In Music......................................................................

So far our two year My Tunes music project with Actiontrack has proved to be extremely positive. My Tunes is all about supporting vulnerable young people by engaging them in music and studio recording.

The project has worked directly with all the Somerset Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), targeting Youth Support.

Thanks to the success of My Tunes and the difference it is making to the young people involved, we are developing strong relationships with Somerset PRUs and intend to extend the project longer term.

In Theatre......................................................................

Despite the radical cuts in arts funding and the perilous political landscape for the creative explorer, Take Art has quite a lot to look forward to. As you read this we are busy developing a number of ambitious projects and parterships, all of which are designed to make Somerset an even better place to be.

We will also be working on the Kick Start project in partnership with Somerset Graduate Dancers who wish to find ways of supporting their professional development.

In Rural Touring......................................................................

In Rural Touring we are meeting with Norwegian, French, Estonian, Swedish and English partners to develop a Europe wide rural touring network.

In Early Years......................................................................

We are currently building relationships with Early Years Teaching Centres in Somerset and North Somerset with a view to developing a three year partnership, placing artists in Early Years settings and encouraging Early Years staff to use the arts in their work with under 5s.

way. The company has recently completed a successful residency in Somerset with the Mandela Project, a workshop and performance programme that encouraged young people and adults to create their own visions for change.

We look forward to developing our relationship in 2015 where our support will include offering an administrative office base for the company and producing theatre opportunities for south west communities to explore their perceptions of British identity.

Things are also looking optimistic for a new project in Theatre, Spoken Word and wellbeing, following on from the huge success of the two year Word/Play project. We are hoping to make the announcement in early 2015 so keep an eye on our website.

In Dance......................................................................

In Dance we are having planning meetings with our English and French partners to follow up the DanSCE Dialogues 2 project, to incorporate the visual arts into our next European dance programme.

We are also researching the potential for Take Art to get involved in the next five year LEADER European funding programme, aimed at supporting the creation and safeguarding of dance and theatre jobs in rural areas.
