2009 Dan Patch and O’Brien Horse of the Year, world champion trotter Muscle Hill finished second in his freshman debut but would never lose another race. The 2008 Dan Patch Two-Year-Old Trotting Colt of the Year was undefeated in twelve starts as a three-year-old. Major victories included the Hambletonian, Canadian Trotting Classic, Breeders Crown, World Trotting Derby, Kentucky Futurity and American-National. His world record-equaling Hambletonian (1:50.1) is still the fastest ever. Muscle Hill was the first trotter to win Horse of the Year after an unbeaten season. He continues to rank as the leading single-season moneywinning Standardbred ($2,456,041) of all time.

In three racing seasons, pacer Real Desire amassed over $3 million, clocked nine sub-1:50 victories and was honored with Horse of the Year awards in both the United States and Canada after his four-year-old season in 2002. At his retirement, Real Desire ranked third among the leading moneywinning pacers of all time. He finished off the board only twice in his career. He is the sire of 2015 Dan Patch Pacing Horse, Canadian Pacing Derby and U.S. Pacing Championship winner State Treasurer and 2007 Little Brown Jug and North America Cup winner Tell All. Real Desire was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Broodmares Arl’s Troublemaker (dam of Art Maker, Stock Market Wiz and Breakin The Law) and Solveig (dam of Shake It Cerry, Uncle Lasse and Dontyouforgetit) will also be inducted into the Living Horse Hall of Fame.

The 2016 Hall of Fame Inductions will take place on the Museum lawn on the first Sunday in July as they have for more than a half-century. Festivities begin with cocktails in the William R. Haughton Memorial Hall at 5:30 p.m.

Hall of Fame drivers, will be held on Hall of Fame Day, Sunday, July 3.

Providing history, statistics, data and other information has been the professional forte of David Carr for most of his career in harness racing. Carr joined the USTA as a publicist and staff writer for Hoof Beats magazine in 1982. Three years later, he proposed the creation of the information and research department, developing it into a superb resource for those writing about the sport of harness racing. In 2009 Carr received the Messenger Award, Harness Tracks of America’s biggest and most prestigious honor.

Jerry Connors has had a passion for harness racing since he was a child, and few in the industry can duplicate his memory of racing and events in the sport. Connors has worked at numerous racetracks and industry organizations throughout his career as a publicist and administrator. He has been an USHWA director for 23 years, and is a licensed judge, track announcer and race charter.

Carl Allen vaulted onto harness racing’s national scene with a victory in the 1983 Woodrow Wilson behind the homebred pacer Carls Bird. His homebred Royal Troubador became a successful stallion, producing 1995 Horse of the Year and 2005 Hall of Famer CR Kay Suzie. In 1994 Allen was voted Glen Garnsey Trainer of the Year and received the USHWA New Jersey Chapter’s Stanley Dancer Award in 1996. In 1997 Allen was inducted into the Florida Harness Racing Hall of Fame, and the following year he and his son Rod were named Owners of the Year by the Grand Circuit.

John Hervey wrote that “Princess unquestionably ranks among the greatest mares of trotting history.” She is perhaps best known for her races in the summer of 1859 against Hall of Fame Immortal Flora Temple. In 1862 Princess was bred to Rysdyk’s Hambletonian, resulting in the 1863 foal Happy Medium. Of Hambletonian’s four main sire lines through his sons George Wilkes, Happy Medium, Dictator and Electioneer, only that of Happy Medium continues to flourish.

2015 Horse of the Year

In 2015 world champion Wiggle It Jiggleit won 22 of his 26 three-year-old season starts, with major victories coming in the Meadowlands Pace, Battle of the Brandywine, Max Hempt Memorial, Carl Milstein Memorial and the Little Brown Jug. Wiggle It Jiggleit was voted 2015 Dan Patch Horse of the Year, Pacer of the Year and Three-Year-Old Pacing Colt of the Year.

Charles E. Keller III took over the helm of Yankeeland Farm after the death of his father in 1990. Under the younger Keller the farm produced two Hambletonian winners in Muscles Yankee and Yankee Paco. Muscles Yankee went on to sire three consecutive Hambletonian winners: Deweycheatumnhowe, Muscle Hill and Muscle Massive. Keller has been a director and member of the Executive Committee of the Hambletonian Society. Keller was a director of the USTA for five terms and an active member of the Finance Committee. He is a current trustee of the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame.

During his seventy-year career in harness racing, trainer-driver Bruce Nickells developed champions for more than four decades. Nickells broke his own single season earnings record set by Follow My Star in 1991 with the great Hall of Famer Miss Easy, who won 25 of her 32 lifetime starts (including an 11-race win streak), with earnings of $1,777,656. For his management of Miss Easy, Nickells was voted 1991 Glen Garnsey Trainer of the Year. His Breeders Crown starters have earned $1.9 million, ranking him 15th in all-time Crown earnings.

Donations: The Collections Department received generous donations of photographs, tickets, programs, media guides, film, video, driving colors and blankets. Highlights include race equipment worn by world champion trotter Sebastian K, Wind Of The North’s Elitloppet Flag, Dan Patch Tobacco paper wrappers, an original 1955 handwritten correspondence from Amy Grannis Miller (mother of Delvin Miller) to Connie Harvey (wife of Harry Harvey) regarding the birth of daughter Ellen Harvey and “Big Day in Goshen.” Donors included: Charles and JoAnn Dombeck, Marilyn Therrian, Åke Svenstedt, Jim Simpson, Ellen Harvey, Dean Hoffman, Frank L. New Traveling Exhibit Initiative: For more than 15 years the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame has provided qualified venues the opportunity to exhibit a collection of rare, original Currier & Ives lithographs. The display, titled “The Story of Harness Racing by Currier & Ives,” has been hosted by museums and historical societies in the United States, Canada, France and Sweden. Due to the historical and financial value of the exhibit, selected sites must meet stringent environmental and security standards. Now, with the support of Burke Racing Stable, the Museum has reproduced 30 of the rare Currier & Ives lithographs showcased by the original exhibit, plus the show’s reader boards. Just like the original, this new, versatile exhibit artfully illustrates harness racing’s important role in early American culture and history. With a smaller financial footprint the show is being made available to racetracks, fairs and other venues that might not have qualified to host the original exhibit.

It’s been a fruitful year for the Education Department by means of an overall 31% increase in attendance from last year. Interest in our homeschooler programs continues to develop, offering families a wide range of programs including drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking, nutrition, communication, history, horse care and science. Almost any topic can be connected to horses and harness racing!! Participation in scouting programs continued to expand, counting 147 participants, a 163% increase. An adult art craft added to our Lunch & Learn Lecture Series has been well received and four additional programs are on the calendar for this coming fall. Total number of individuals for paid tours was 1,882 of which 1,301 were children, the highest number since 2011/12, and 1,296 enjoyed free admission for a total of 3,178 attendees. New programs are continually in the works and we receive rave reviews on our adaptability to individual group needs and the passion shared for the exciting sport of harness racing!

Education

Known as “Hurricane Hannah” for having taken amateur racing by storm, Hannah Miller has been named the 2016 Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame Amateur Driving Champion. In 2015 Miller drove at 21 different racetracks in the United States and Canada and represented the U.S. in an international amateur driving competition in Majorca, Spain. She is a member of multiple amateur driving clubs and dominated in the 2015 C.K.G. Billings Series, finishing as the combined points champion and winning the east region final at Pocono Downs. Her 32 driving victories are the most ever in a single season in recorded amateur racing. In September 2016, Miller will represent the U.S. in the international amateur World Cup in Budapest, Hungary.

The Museum is pleased to announce our newly redesigned website. Employing the services of Lexington-based web development company Trifecta, who has also designed the site for the Kentucky Horse Park, the Museum’s site is designed to be responsive and adaptive for mobile devices. A work in progress, the new site includes biographies of all harness racing Hall of Famers, and soon will be adding historic photographs and informative images of other items from the Museum’s collections. This year’s Hambletonian Charity Casino Night and Poker Tournament is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 1st at the Meadowlands. The event, which raised over $70,000 last year, benefits the Museum and the Standardbred Retirement Foundation. We are coupling the event with the Hambletonian Post Position Draw, held from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm in the Victory Sports Bar with Casino Night starting immediately after. Pricing starts at $50 per person for buffet, open bar and table games. An additional cost applies to participate in the Poker Tournament, which begins around 6:30. Sponsorships are available.
