LETTER FROM AID PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to report that the response to the AID Capital Campaign has been wonderful. During the first 18 months of the campaign, we have secured gifts and pledges totaling nearly $2.2 million towards the $2.5 million goal! As a result, we have been able to pay off 2 of the 3 mortgages financing AID group homes, apartments and facilities. If you have not already pledged, please consider a personally significant gift to support All Their Tomorrows. I hope to meet with every family and contributor over the next year to explain how important this is to continue the life-sustaining services needed by the individuals we serve.

It is so hard to believe that we are facing a 3rd year without a state budget. Added to this is the current plan to eliminate the Affordable Health Care for America Act (Obamacare) and replace it with the Better Care Reconciliation Act, which, if passed, would greatly reduce and in some instances eliminate federal Medicaid funding for AID services. Medicaid accounts for 75% of AID total operating revenue, so any reductions will have a huge impact. We ask our supporters to contact their US Senator and Congressmen, State Senator and Representative, and urge them to PRESERVE current Medicaid funded services for children and adults with developmental disabilities, mental illness and crisis service needs. Find your legislator contact info at: illinoispolicy.org/maps. Find your Congressman and US Senator contact information at: whoismyrepresentative.com.

We are in unprecedented times. Momentum to reduce taxes has taken hold across Illinois and the country. As this occurs, AID will have to rely increasingly on contributions and donations to sustain services.

I hope we can count on your continued, generous support of the more than 5,500 children and adults served by AID last year. We couldn’t have done it with you.

AID President, Lynn O’Shea

A typical day at the nursery has the teams working on merging flats of plants from one hoop house to another, removing any dead plants from flats, consolidating the pots of dirt to the back of a truck and general cleanup of the grounds. Midwest Groundcover workers supervise the clients’ while AID Employment Specialists are on site, as well as on call, to provide support for both clients and the employer.

At a meeting held in May with the Midwest Groundcover Human Resources department, the clients’ direct supervisor Francisco and AID Employment Specialists, everyone agreed that the clients’ work ethic and progress has been outstanding. Clients are happy and Midwest Groundcovers reports the clients are meeting all of their expectations. When asked about their work, Claudia asks, “Can I work more days? I love it”. Jay has been heard to say “What a beautiful morning, I love working outside.” All six clients indicate that they are thankful for the job opportunity.

Midwest Groundcovers has become a great parner. This unique opportunity for several AID clients, who previously worked at the Elgin Training Center, is a win-win for everyone!

Thanks to a grant from the Kiwanis Club of Elgin, AID clients participating in the “Aktion Club” started a raised garden bed project. Clients dug holes, planted vegetables and are currently nurturing the garden to fruition. Lettuce, onions and pepper plants are among the many varieties of produce planted.

When harvest time arrives, clients plan to make a variety of meals including fresh salads, lettuce wraps and bruschetta. The Aktion Club hopes to expand the gardens next year by planting pumpkins and sweet corn.

AID Becomes Established Behavioral Health Service Provider for McHenry CountySince May of 2016, AID has served over 275 individuals in McHenry County through a growing variety of Behavioral Health services and programs. These programs include: individual, family and group counseling; supported living services; case management; psychiatry and a “drop-in” center. AID also plans to offer “pop-up” community mental health services in remote and rural locations this summer.

The AID clinical team has built connections with multiple providers and community partners to offer innovative and evidence-based, outcome-oriented treatment for people looking to improve the quality of their lives. The AID McHenry clinical team creatively and innovatively manages an always-evolving caseload with a focus on sustainability while ensuring that each individual receives the highest possible quality care.

Over the past year, AID McHenry has partnered with the 22nd Judicial District to offer a twice a week psychosocial rehabilitation program. This service offers life-improving psycho-educational programming to members of the community. AID also launched tele-health services, which offer desperately needed psychiatric services to rural and urban areas. The “Supported Living” program continues to expand and now offers in-home support and independent living skill development to 25 clients. Finally, the new “Drop-In” center offers eighteen hours of complimentary recovery support to clients who have completed formal treatment.

Inspire Dreams Foundation Inspires ClientsThanks to the donation of new iPads from Inspire Dreams Foundation, AID clients are now able to actively participate in a multitude of new classroom activities. Non-verbal clients can communicate their wants, needs and thoughts through an assistive application on the iPad.

The founders of Inspire Dreams Foundation were all inspired by one child. Once they saw what immense results can come from something so simple as the donation of iPads, they were moved to pay it forward and help others with disabilities achieve their dreams. For more informations on this organization visit: www.InspireDreamsFoundation.org.

New Client Created Candles AvailableAID clients are proud to introduce a new line of “All-Natural Lavender Candles”. Beginning with carefully pouring wax into jars, inserting the wick and applying labels; clients are involved in every step of the process. Priced at only $6.00, these candles make a perfect gift for family and friends. Keep an eye out for more scents throughout the year.

Candles and other client products are available at both AID Elgin (1135 Bowes Rd.) & AID Aurora (309 New Indian Tr.). For more information, contact Wendy at (847) 931-2294 or [email protected]. Every purchase benefits AID programs and services. (Check out the candle creation process on page 6)

The 2017 AID Annual Meeting & Awards Night was held on Wednesday, May 18th at the Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva, IL. The award portion of the presentation honored outstanding clients, dedicated staff, and our generous community supporters.

Highlights include client award speeches, honoring community employers and a client “parade” to reveal the current amount raised for the AID Capital Campaign ($2 million). AID is honored to celebrate the clients, staff and outstanding community supporters that make this agency a leader in Developmental Disabilities and Behavioral Health services.

Color Burst 5K Raises Funds for AID Programs and ServicesAID hosted the second annual “Color Burst 5k Fun Run & Roll” on Sunday, June 4, 2017 to raise funds for programs and services benefiting 5,500 children and adults with developmental disabilities, mental illness and special needs.

More than 170 participants were showered with colorful dust as they made their way across a 3-mile course. The top 3 male participants (Bill Koch, Christopher Schweitzer and Keith Cornille) and top 3 female participants (Arielle Cornille, Rhonda Bandey and Abigail Stoneman) received special prizes.

Event attendees also enjoyed a craft fair hosted by individuals with special needs and a special singing and dancing performance by AID clients.

This event was made possible with the help of 75 volunteers and multiple corporate, individual and family sponsors, including: Eby-Brown Foundation, Hollywood Casino Aurora, First Alert, Weldstar, The Klotz Family, Waubonsee Community College, John A. Mehaffey Family, Tim & Deb Torres, The Simpson Family, Caterpillar, Management Solutions of Illinois Inc. (MSI), Bennett Law Firm LLC., Walter & Janet Dwyer, Martha Egeland, Mary Francissen, Pamela McGoughy, Tom & Lynn O’Shea, Owen & Susan Lowrey, David Smith & Suzanne Bessette-Smith, Mary Trippon, Anderson Graphics Inc., Douglas Coleman Home Solutions, EFS Foundation, Elgin State Bank, NorthStar Credit Union, Hogan Plumbing Inc., Lauderdale Electric, Proven IT, Assurance Agency Ltd., John & Suzanne Potter and Deb Stob of County Financial.

AID is truly blessed to have made so many friends and partnered with so many supporters along the way. The demand for services far outweighs the current resources and AID must turn to the private sector to preserve and enhance many vital services.

Waubonsee Recognizes AID Partnership As Institutional Success StoryAll year long, as part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Waubonsee Community College has been recognizing community partnerships that bring value to students and area residents. For the role it has played in improving the mental health of the college’s students, Waubonsee is proud to recognize its partnership with AID as January’s Student Success: Institutional Stories.

The story of college-aged students’ mental health is not necessarily a happy one. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), in the past year, more than 80 percent of college students felt overwhelmed by all they had to do, and 45 percent have gotten to the point of feeling that things were hopeless.

Obviously, such feelings can be huge barriers to academic success. That’s why Waubonsee’s Counseling, Advising and Transfer Center offers free personal counseling to students.

“We have amazing counselors, offering services at all four of our campuses,” said Dr. Melinda Tejada, Waubonsee’s Vice President of Student Development. “But we know crises don’t always happen when we have scheduled hours of operation.”

Recognizing that fact, the college partnered with AID in 2014 to create a Waubonsee Talk Line. The hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by counselors trained by AID, which operates other crisis referral hotlines.

The expertise AID brings both in the areas of mental health and local community resources has been a real positive for students, and the low cost of the local agency has been a real positive for the college.

“Our AID Talk Line Partnership has benefited our students at a fraction of the cost we’d pay for a national student assistance program,” explained Waubonsee’s Dean for Counseling, Career and Student Support Kelli Sinclair. “As an added bonus, AID knows our community inside and out, and they can better refer students to local agencies for further support.”

But the AID role with Waubonsee students goes beyond providing life-saving crisis support; sometimes the organization has helped students find their life paths through the internships it provides. Adriana Resendiz took classes at Waubonsee, including an internship experience with the AID crisis line.

After completing her bachelor’s degree at Elmhurst College and working for a few years out of state, she’s back in Aurora working full-time for AID.

A partnership that can work full-circle in this way — a community organization helping the college and its students, only to have the college’s alumni return to work for it and continue the cycle of help — is truly remarkable and worthy of recognition.

AID HOLIDAY HOPES PROGRAM - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1 ST - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8 TH

ANNUAL BENEFIT AUCTION - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12 TH

AID will host a “Black & White” themed benefit auction on Thursday, October 12th at the scenic Fishermen’s Inn. Support the auction by donating new items such as gift cards, wine/liquors, sports/concert tickets or consider sharing your timeshare or get a group together and create a Get-Away themed basket! Contact Wendy Bialek at 847.931.2294 or [email protected].

SUPPORT AID WITH #ILGIVE ON #GIVINGTUESDAY - TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28 TH On Tuesday, Nov. 28th, 2017, all online donations to AID will be matched by the Grand Victoria Foundation and the Dunham Fund. All donations must be made online at www.The-Association.org on the day of the event. AID raised over $40,000 thanks to 168 donors during #ILGIVE 2016.

The holidays can be an upsetting time for clients who no longer have families. With the help of our exemplary donors, AID attempts to bring a little holiday cheer to clients in need by providing small gifts at Christmas. Individuals, groups or businesses interested in helping to purchase gifts for those in need can display itemized “gift tags” with gift ideas for clients at their place of business, worship or other social settings. Please contact Kathy Hazelwood at 847.931.2290 or [email protected].
