A Scottish classic set in the East End of Glasgow, Roddy McMillan’s celebration of working life follows hot on the heels of last year’s Citizens’ Company sell out production No Mean City.

Young apprentice Norrie starts his fi rst day in the basement bevelling shop of a glass factory, but fi nds life isn’t quite what he expected. The Rouger is looking for trouble – and the job they have on is one of the largest ever, the bevelling of a huge sheet of glass that none of them can afford to break.

Roddy McMillan was a distinguished Scottish actor, famous for his leading role in the television series Para Handy. This superbly written play about the realities of working life, and the brutal camaraderie of the men, also reveals the pride of skilled craftsmen and their love of patter. First premiered in 1973, with Roddy McMillan himself in a lead role, its impact paved the way for future timeless Scottish masterpieces such as The Slab Boys and The Steamie.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America is one of the defi ning works of 20th century drama. Hilarious and profound, it is a vivid dissection of relationships gay and straight, of survival, of faith and of the things that make us human.

Citizens’ Theatre Company, Headlong Theatre and Lyric Hammersmith present the fi rst national revival of Kushner’s two-part masterpiece since its premiere at the National Theatre in 1992. The play is directed by Daniel Kramer whose credits include Hair and Woyzeck at the Gate and Bent in the West End. Design is by Soutra Gilmour who has also designed When the World Was Green at the Young Vic and The Shadow of A Boy at the National Theatre.

The cast includes Greg Hicks whose award-winning work includes the title role in Macbeth with the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Relapse at the Citizens’ and Ann Mitchell who achieved international recognition for her performance as Dolly in the seminal TV series Widows.

Set in a small Italian town in the threadbare years just after the war, the parish priest, Don Camillo, and the communist mayor, Peppone, represent the two poles of Italian life – the Catholic Church and the Communist Party. They stoop to skulduggery and worse to get one over on the other. But their public show of hostility conceals a deeper collaboration to defend a value more important than their respective ideologies – their shared humanity.

Godber’s play is brought vividly to life by a young cast of students from the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies drama department – their fast paced, enthusiastic delivery capturing life in its various guises, in the institution we call school.
