CITIZENS AND TAG THEATRE COMPANY SHOWS are brought to the stage by our hand-picked creative teams. Sets are designed and built from scratch in our bustling backstage workshops and costumes sewn with skilful precision by our wardrobe department.

WHETHER YOU PREFER THE GRANDEUR OF THE main theatre or the intimacy of the circle and stalls studios, we ensure our shows are developed for the space that most suits the work.

BY ALSO INVITING THE BEST TOURING SHOWS into our theatres, we aim to offer a powerful mix of productions that seals the Citizens’ reputation as the place to see theatre in Glasgow.

THIS IS A THEATRE THAT LIVES IN THE HEART of one of Glasgow’s up and coming city centre communities, just south of the Clyde. We are proud to be spending time on creative projects which are rooted in our neighbourhood, not least in the local nurseries and primary schools.

“You come in here and it is glittery lights and the mirror

ball, which is what a theatre should have, and the elephants

which are quite bohemian and it is very quickly just like

entering a different world.” CITIZENS THEATRE AUDIENCE MEMBER

THROUGH TAG’S UNRIVALLED TOURING WORK and with the development of our own Young Company, the Citizens’ is actively encouraging young people in Glasgow and across Scotland to take part in the arts and to get into the habit of going to see great theatre.

WITH FULLY PROFESSIONAL SHOWS AVAILABLE from just £3 on preview night and £6 every Tuesday we strive to ensure our doors are open to all.

EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE THEATRE SHOWS you will fi nd in this brochure is carefully chosen, made to the highest possible standards and we believe well worth coming to see. But don’t just take our word for it. Sprinkled throughout the brochure are some words from the people we value most – our audience.

A Scottish classic set in the East End of Glasgow, Roddy McMillan’s celebration of working life follows hot on the heels of last year’s Citizens’ Company sell out production No Mean City.

Young apprentice Norrie starts his fi rst day in the basement bevelling shop of a glass factory, but fi nds life isn’t quite what he expected. The Rouger is looking for trouble – and the job they have on is one of the largest ever, the bevelling of a huge sheet of glass that none of them can afford to break.

Roddy McMillan was a distinguished Scottish actor, famous for his leading role in the television series Para Handy. This superbly written play about the realities of working life, and the brutal camaraderie of the men, also reveals the pride of skilled craftsmen and their love of patter. First premiered in 1973, with Roddy McMillan himself in a lead role, its impact paved the way for future timeless Scottish masterpieces such as The Slab Boys and The Steamie.

“It’s fi fteen years until the third millennium. I feel... like something’s going to give”

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America is one of the defi ning works of 20th century drama. Hilarious and profound, it is a vivid dissection of relationships gay and straight, of survival, of faith and of the things that make us human.

Citizens’ Theatre Company, Headlong Theatre and Lyric Hammersmith present the fi rst national revival of Kushner’s two-part masterpiece since its premiere at the National Theatre in 1992. The play is directed by Daniel Kramer whose credits include Hair and Woyzeck at the Gate and Bent in the West End. Design is by Soutra Gilmour who has also designed When the World Was Green at the Young Vic and The Shadow of A Boy at the National Theatre.

The cast includes Greg Hicks whose award-winning work includes the title role in Macbeth with the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Relapse at the Citizens’ and Ann Mitchell who achieved international recognition for her performance as Dolly in the seminal TV series Widows.

“A vast, miraculous play... provocative, witty and

deeply upsetting... a searching and radical rethinking

of American political drama.”

Have you ever thought about what’s on the other side of the mirror? It’s the place where dreams come from and it’s where the Dust Man goes to collect them for you. At bed time he reaches out, takes you by the hand and together you fl y off on the wind to dream.

It’s a hard job for Dusty though – every night everybody dreams, every single one of you. Being on the night-shift isn’t easy either, and having your boss call at all hours doesn’t help when you’ve got people falling asleep on the toilet and the night being burnt in a saucepan! Dusty has got Nero, his cat, to help him remember your name though. So put on your pyjamas, brush your teeth, turn out your night-light and slip into their back-to-front world.

MIKE MARAN PRODUCTIONS

THE LITTLE WORLD OF DON CAMILLOFROM THE STORIES OF GIOVANNI GUARESCHI

Set in a small Italian town in the threadbare years just after the war, the parish priest, Don Camillo, and the communist mayor, Peppone, represent the two poles of Italian life – the Catholic Church and the Communist Party. They stoop to skulduggery and worse to get one over on the other. But their public show of hostility conceals a deeper collaboration to defend a value more important than their respective ideologies – their shared humanity.

With an original score written and performed live on stage by Colin Steele (trumpet) and Martin Green (accordion), The Little World of Don Camillo sweeps you off your feet and back fi fty years to the Po Valley and a world full of hope that peace will last.

TWISTING YARN AND BRADFORD THEATRES

LIFE OF PIA stage adaptation of the 2002 Man Booker Prize winning novel by Yann Martel.

Life of Pi charts the adventures of Pi, a 16 year old Indian boy, a Hindu who unusually embraces Christianity and Islam in his search for one God. His family owns a zoo in Pondicherry, southern India, but they decide to emigrate to Canada, taking some of the animals with them. The ship they travel on sinks and Pi fi nds himself sharing a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, a female orang utan, a 450-pound royal Bengal tiger, his imagination and his faith. Life of Pi is an adventure which challenges children and adults alike. A story of self-exploration and survival, it will make you question your own beliefs and views of the world.

Twisting Yarn is the only company in the UK permitted to stage the story – a unique chance to see this beautiful adaptation.

ANNA HEPBURN IN

CONSIDER THE LILIESScottish actress Anna Hepburn encapsulates the pain and suffering of a Highland widow during the time of the Highland Clearances in this powerfully evocative writing from master-craftsman, Iain Crichton Smith.

Consider the Lilies is already established as a classic treatment of one of the most shameful chapters of Scottish history. It portrays the incomprehension and bewilderment of a people whose values and traditions are disregarded in the name of progress, revealing the solidarity every society needs to survive. The performance is a profoundly human piece, sensitively delivered and with a message still relevant to our present time. Anna Hepburn delivers a gentle lamentation for a lost way of life.

COMMUNICADO THEATRE COMPANY

FERGUS LAMONTCommunicado, Scotland’s multi-award winning theatre company, present a dynamic adaptation of one of the fi nest novels ever written in Scotland, Robin Jenkins’ Fergus Lamont.

From his origins as an illegitimate child in the slums of Glasgow, Fergus Lamont sets out to reclaim his inheritance and to remake his identity as a soldier, poet and would-be aristocrat. Covering the years from the turn of the century to the Second World War, Fergus’ unforgettable voice recounts a tale of vanity, success and betrayal which shines its own sardonic light on Scotland and the cultural and political issues of the day. At odds with his origins, hag-ridden by a creative ego, and unsettled in his aristocratic pretensions, Fergus Lamont reaches middle age before he is offered at least the hope of redemption in a love affair with an island woman.

In this adaptation of Robin Jenkins’ most searching exploration of the modern psyche, Communicado create not just an unforgettable character but an image of Scotland and what it is to be Scots.

RE:UNIONWhen should you stay in a relationship and when should you walk away?

When is compromise just another word for humiliation? Or are some partnerships worth the struggle? When is separation preferable to continued union?

To celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the Act of Union between Scotland and England and the upcoming Scottish Elections, 7:84 has commissioned four writers to examine the theme of Separation and Reconciliation with four momentous historical events as a backdrop: Ireland/England 1921; India/Pakistan 1947; Croatia/Serbia 1991; Scotland/England 2007.

A triumphant return of 7:84’s signature political work.

Sylvia Gellburg has suddenly become paralysed from the waist down. As her family Doctor investigates, a tangled web of lies, deceit and fear emerge.

What is her husband’s involvement in her illness? Is there any connection between her illness and the horrendous radio reports concerning persecution of Jews in Germany? As the Doctor becomes more obsessed, the mystery deepens and the story twists and turns to an exciting and emotional climax.

One of Miller’s most recent plays, this powerful thriller from the writer of The Crucible, Death of a Salesman and All My Sons combines his rare gift for cutting edge social commentary and old-fashioned humanity.

THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL & MR HYDEBY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSONADAPTED BY PATRICK PRIORDIRECTED BY JIM DUNK

“All human beings are co-mingled out of good and bad… Edward Hyde was pure evil.”

An experiment to separate virtue from wickedness in his own nature results in the respectable Doctor Jekyll releasing the demon within. A malevolent force which will eventually possess him body and soul.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale has fascinated the world for more than a hundred years, questioning whether a Mr Hyde lurks deep within us all, watching and waiting.

Presented by Isosceles Theatre, the company who brought On our way to Lisbon, the story of Celtic’s 1967 European Cup Triumph.

CAPTAIN CORELLI’S MANDOLINBY LOUIS DE BERNIÈRESDIRECTED BY MIKE MARANPAINTING BY RUTH BARRIELIGHTING DESIGN BY JOHN BROWN & JIM BOWMANMUSIC PERFORMED LIVE ON STAGE BY ALISON STEPHENS (MANDOLIN) & ANNE EVANS (PIANO)

Adapted from the popular book by Louis de Bernières, Mike Maran along with Alison Stephens on mandolin and Anne Evans on piano, brings this epic to the stage with two chickens, two aubergines, three puppets, a tuba, a motorbike, some old photographs, a walking stick and a goat.

Set on the Greek island of Cephalonia from the Second World War to the present day, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin tells the story of Dr. Iannis, his daughter Pelagia, the heroic Italian soldier Carlo Guercio, Captain Antonio Corelli, and the love they all share. It is a passionate story that sweeps you up with joy one minute then makes the fright and rage of war boil in the stomach the next. Full of laughter and tears, the joy of love, and ultimately the triumph of life over death.

REID KERR COLLEGE ACTING AND PERFORMANCE STUDENTS

THE CRUCIBLE BY ARTHUR MILLER

Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria is based on the Salem witch-hunt of 1692. Drawing parallels with the McCarthyism which gripped America in the 1950s, it tells of how a small community is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice. This new interpretation by the students of the HND Acting and Performance course at Reid Kerr College demonstrates how it continues to have interesting resonances today.

XLC THEATRE COMPANY IN ASSOCIATION WITH LANGSIDE COLLEGE

ANTIGONEBY SOPHOCLESADAPTED BY JEAN ANOUILHDIRECTED BY DAVID LEE MICHAEL

Following its highly successful run of Sunset Song at the Citizens’ last year XLC is delighted to return with its version of Antigone.

“acting of quality and emotional courage” JOYCE MCMILLAN, THE SCOTSMAN

The play by Sophocles was adapted by Jean Anouilh during the German occupation of France. He created a contemporary yet timeless version of this classic. It examines the eternal questions of freewill versus fate and of idealism versus pragmatism but it is also a very human story of a young girl who is prepared to defy her king in order to honour burial rites for her brother.

XLC is Langside’s postgraduate company created to give newly qualifi ed actors an early professional platform. Antigone involves XLC actors along with existing students from each of the 3 years of the National Diploma course.

‘SET IN STONE’ FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

Few people have entered the theatre’s foyer and not noticed the four stone muses, the two literary fi gures depicting the Bard and Burns and the four elephant heads guarding the doors to the main auditorium – not to mention the bright pink nautch girls and columns in the Dress Circle Bar.

The theatre is offering its audiences and supporters a one-off opportunity to ‘sponsor’ one of these stone items that hail from the Victorian era. All money raised from this year long appeal will help us raise the funds needed to pay for the costumes, sets and props for the 2007 family Christmas show, Peter Pan.

To Name a Nautch Girl, Adopt an Elephant, Mark a Muse, Support a Column or Acquire a Royal Title we are seeking donations from £200 for a column to £2,000 for a muse. Open to everyone!
