Club News Continued!

• Following a suggestion by Pat Ainslie at a recent Board Meeting ‘to not send Christmas cards and save on the cost of cards and postage and contribute the savings to the Club to purchase a Shelter Box’, I am pleased to report that our donations to this project see that we are in the position to able to buy one. Congratulations to Pat for the suggestion, and to all members who added extra contributions enabling us to reach this goal before Christmas. Well done. Norm is preparing a cheque to pay for the Shelter Box!

• In response to email from Norm the following reply was received from Lightning Ridge Club. ‘Your donation was handed out over 2 functions to women on properties and the feedback we got was that they were greatly received. Most of our cash donations have been put toward repairs on structures and machinery on properties where it was deemed needed most. As you can imagine some of the 'old' homesteads are in great need of repair and replace. We were able to paint some, repair bathrooms and one old farmer had no internal walls which were replaced. We are working with a group called S.A.L.T. (Supporting and Linking Ladies in Trades). This group is lead by Ms Fe Shewring and she gathers mostly women in trades (some men are also involved), all volunteers, to come out to Lightning Ridge to get in and get these jobs done. Our next visit from them is in April 2017. The Rotary Club pays for the material that is required to get the jobs done. We expect a bill for about $10,000-. The S.A.L.T. Team are putting together a PowerPoint Presentation to present at the 2017 District 9650 Conference in Laurieton, I will email you a copy when I get hold of it. To bring a little Christmas Cheer we have purchased 20 X $100- gift vouchers from our local supermarket and have handed them our to rural households we feel are in need. Whilst we have had some rain and some farmers were lucky enough to get a crop harvested - they are far from seeing their way clear. It is estimated that it will take 3-4 good seasons to get loans paid off and restock properties. Until then we will still support our paint, repair and replace for as long as we can with the assistance of donations from Rotary Clubs like yours. The Club members decided recently to change our Appeal name from Drought Fund to Disaster Fund - this will allow us to assist when we have the next disaster which will probably be a FLOOD!!!! Please pass our appreciation on to your club members and we wish you and your members a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.’ Yours in Rotary Neroli Bevan Secretary Rotary Club of Lightning Ridge Inc.

• How nice to receive such a detailed report and thanks from our country friends! Thanks Norm for the follow-up of this very worthy cause!

• Lower Blue Rotary Club have arranged a fundraising screening of the movie ‘Hidden Figures’ to raise money for Polio Plus at Glenbrook Cinema on Sunday February 12th Contact Lower Blue for more information and tickets!

ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Courses for early 2017 are: RLI 37 runs Sundays 22 January, 19 February and 19 March RLI 39 runs Saturdays 4 February, 18 February and 18 March Register at rli.rotarydistrict9685.org.au

Subject: N.Z. Tour 2017 - Please assist Dear Club President/Secretary, ‘Happy New Year’. Further to my earlier ‘NZ Tour update’ I wish to request your assistance just once more. As advised earlier our Tour is going ahead. We have received good responses to date, but we have space for 5 or 6 more couples (or singles) so trust that you will highlight this fact to your Members via your Bulletin and/or at your Meeting, as some of your members may still be considering registering. As previously, those who are interested should contact me by email ([email protected] ) or phone me on 6421758478 and I will send them the full Tour details. Regards Yours in Rotary, Peter Hawkins, NZ Tour Coordinator. The Rotary Club of Pakuranga, District 9920.

The Rotary Leadership Institute is proving to be a great Club strengthening resource, benefiting everyone from newer members to "old hands". I have previously advertised the first two courses for 2017 and we have some registrations, but too few to warrant running the courses. There is still time to register and take advantage of this great opportunity to participate, learn and share. Ian Scott PDG
