Protection of the environment

Natural resources form the basis of our exis-tence on this planet. The objective is to usethe natural resources which form the basis ofour existence on this planet sparingly and in amanner which takes the requirements of bothnature and humanity into account..Our declared policy is one of integrated envi-ronmental protection, starting at the rootcauses and encompassing in its managementdecisions all the consequences for the envi-ronment which could arise from productionprocesses or the products themselves. You too can help protect the environment byoperating your Sprinter in an environmentallyresponsible manner.

Fuel consumption and the wear of yourengine, brakes and tires largely depend onthe operating conditions and your individualdriving style. To reduce fuel consumption andwear, note the following:Ravoid short trips.Ralways ensure that the tire pressure is cor-rect.Ravoid frequent and abrupt acceleration.Ravoid carrying unnecessary weight.Rremove ski and roof racks once you no lon-ger need them.Rdo notwarmup the enginewhile the vehicleis stationary.Rshift gears in a timely manner so that eachgear is used only up to 2/3 of its maximumengine speed.Rmonitor the fuel consumption.A regularly serviced vehicle will also help pro-tect the environment. Comply with the main-tenance intervals indicated by the ASSYSTservice interval display, as well as any other

should only be performed once the corre-sponding maintenance service has beencarried out. Resetting the ASSYST serviceinterval display without performing the cor-responding maintenance service mayresult in engine damage and/or damage toother vehicle parts that are not covered bythe New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Tire rotationYour vehicle's tires are a critical componentto overall vehicle performance and stability. The useful life of tires will vary and is propor-tional to tire type, speed rating, ambient con-ditions, tire loads, tire inflation pressure, roadsurfaces, and individual driving style. Wetherefore recommend regularly checking thetires for wear and correct tire pressure, and -if the tire configuration allows - that the tiresare rotated regularly.Tires can only be rotated on vehicles with thesame tire size on the front and rear axles. If your vehicle's tire configuration allows fortire rotation, tire rotation should be per-formed in accordancewith the recommendedintervals, or sooner at the first signs of irreg-ular (uneven) tread wear. Tire rotation rec-ommendations will likely necessitate a tirerotation at least at every maintenance ser-vice.

Single tires at rearIf your vehicle is equipped with tires of thesame size, tires can be rotated by following afront-to-rear rotation pattern that will main-tain the intended rotation (spinning) directionof the tire (on unidirectional tires, an arrow onthe sidewall indicates the intended rotation orspinning direction of the tire).

Dual tires at the rearIf your vehicle is equipped with tires of thesame size, the tires on the front axle can berotated with the inner tires on the rear axle inpairs so that the intended rotation (spinning)

direction of the tires remains the same. If thetread pattern on the tires is not unidirectional, the outer tires on the rear axle can be rotatedfrom one side to the other.

Diagram showing tire rotation for single and dualtires

This Maintenance Booklet contains a practi-cal tire rotation confirmation page, which youcan use to record the date and mileage forevery tire rotation (Y page 5).

Arduous operating conditionsThe maintenance intervals have been deter-mined so that under normal operating condi-tions the vehicle should operate properlybetween maintenance services. Arduousoperating conditions may require that the fol-lowing parts be replaced at shorter intervals:RINTERIOR FILTERS(Examples: dust filter, recirculating air fil-ter, activated charcoal filter or combinationfilter) are to be replaced as indicated by themaintenance computer. Under severe dustconditions, or if the climate control is oper-ated frequently in air recirculation mode, the filters should be replaced more fre-quently than indicated by the maintenancecomputer.RCOOLANTThe coolant (water/anticorrosion/anti-freeze mixture) should be replaced at thespecified maintenance intervals. The coolant may need to be replaced morefrequently if it is not maintained correctly

and/or anticorrosion/antifreeze productsother than those approved for your vehicleare being used. You can find coolantinstructions under the "Coolant" section ofthe vehicle Operator's Manual. Contact anauthorized Sprinter Dealer for a list of anti-corrosion/antifreeze products that areapproved for your vehicle.

Wear partsThe maintenance computer recommends theinspection of certain wear parts, however, itcannot judge the condition of these wearparts. Only qualified aftersales technicianscan determine if a wear part should bereplaced.

Regular checksIn addition to the maintenance service, youshould also perform regular checks on thefollowing (e.g. weekly, when refueling, orbefore any long journey):ROil level – Depending on the vehicle equip-ment, check the oil level of the engine usingeither the oil dipstick or using the controlsystem via the multifunction steeringwheel/multifunction display. Refer to theOperator's Manual for more information onmeasuring the engine oil level.RCoolant level – The correct procedure forchecking the coolant level is described inthe Operator's Manual.RBrake fluid level – If the brake fluid has tobe refilled, visit an authorized SprinterDealer and have the cause determined, e.g.leakage or worn brake pads.RWindshield washer system – If thewasher fluid level falls below 1/3 full, thewarning lamp for the washer fluid levellights up. Add washer fluid mixed with anapproved windshield washer concentrate, test function and check wiper blades.

RLighting systemRTire condition and tire pressure – Checkat least once a month. Refer to the "TiresandWheels" section in the Operator'sMan-ual for guidelines and the correct proce-dure for checking the tire condition and tirepressure.

In addition, use only fuels, lubricantsand corrosion inhibitors/antifreeze agentsthat correspond to the factory specifications. Please see your authorized Sprinter Dealerfor more information on this subject.

Exhaust system maintenance

Warning: exhaust gas aftertreatmentsystem – diesel enginesYour Sprinter is equipped with emission con-trol devices to comply with current dieselexhaust emission regulations in countrieswhere the vehicle is certified for sale. Followour recommended maintenance instructionsin order to ensure the proper operating stateof your vehicle.Note the following:a) Diesel engines require diesel fuel withextremely low sulfur content for road vehicles(maximum15 ppm sulfur), in compliance withASTM D975 standard. Failure to use ultra lowsulfur highway diesel fuel (ULSD) can severely

damage the vehicle's exhaust gas aftertreat-ment system.b)We approve the use of B5 (standard ULSD,which may contain up to 5% bio-diesel) for allBlueEFFICIENCY ® diesel engines.Diesel fuels that contain a higher proportionof bio-diesel, e.g. B20 or pure bio-diesel fuel, can severely damage the engine and fuel sys-tem and are not permitted.Contact your Service Center for more infor-mation. If the B5 bio-diesel blend is not clearlylabeled to indicate that it meets the ULSDstandard, it should not be used. The NewVehicle Limited Warranty does not coverdamage caused by the use fuels that do notmeet our approved fuel standards.c) The prescribed engine maintenancework must be carried out fully and at therequired intervals.d) The exhaust gas aftertreatment sys-tem operation must not be modified inany way. Alterations are not permissible bylaw. Alterations can also damage the catalyticconverter and result in increased fuel con-sumption and impaired engine running con-ditions.If the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator lamp lightsup in the instrument cluster when the engineis running, this indicates that there may be amalfunction in the engine control system or inthe exhaust gas aftertreatment system. We recommend having the malfunctionchecked as soon as possible.

BlueEFFICIENCY® exhaust gas after-treatment using DEFBlueEFFICIENCY® exhaust gas aftertreat-ment requires a reducing agent (DEF) in orderto function properly. Maintaining the leveland condition of the DEF is part of the regularmaintenance service work.DEF is a non-flammable, non-toxic, colorlessand odorless, water-soluble liquid.

Exhaust system maintenance 7

Maintenance

Booklet

! Only use DEF according to ISO 22241. Donot add special additives to DEF or dilute itwith water. This can damage the BlueEFFI-CIENCY® exhaust gas aftertreatment.

Description of maintenance work forthe exhaust system

The composition of exhaust emissions isinfluenced not only by the exhaust gas after-treatment system, but also by various engineparts and their settings.Maintenance of the exhaust system musttherefore include these engine parts. Somemaintenance jobs are actually only tests. They are important, however, because theyallow early detection of discrepancies whichcan later lead to increased exhaust emis-sions. It is generally less costly to adjust devi-ations of this sort immediately than to waituntil they incur high repair costs. The main-tenance intervals have been determined sothat the vehicle, under normal operating con-ditions, should operate properly betweenmaintenance services.

Changing the engine oil and filterChange engine oil and replace oil filters afterevery 20,000miles. If oil consumption shouldincrease, determine the cause and take nec-essary corrective steps. Do not reset the ser-vice interval display if the oil level is filled upor the oil is changed at times other than therecommended intervals.

Replacing the air filterUnder normal dust conditions, the air filtershould be replaced every 60,000miles. Cleanthe air filter cap and housing before removingthe air filter.

Replacing the fuel filterReplace the fuel filter every 20,000 miles.

Checking the diesel particle filterThe level of the diesel particle filter must bechecked for the first time at 100,000 miles. If the saturation level is still below the thresh-old value at 100,000 miles, the saturationlevel of the diesel particle filter must bechecked again at each subsequent oil serviceplus/maintenance service. If the level of the diesel particle filter is abovethe limit value, the diesel particle filter shouldbe replaced.Once the new diesel particle filter has beeninstalled, the checking cycle starts again after100,000 miles.

Checking and adding DEFCheck and refill DEF every 20,000 miles.
