F A R M Northland
Spruce Pond Estates is being developed on a parcel of land that was once part of the historic “Northland Farm.” Through the years, many notable Windham families have called this property home. The story begins with Ma hew Reid, who was had this property given to him and his brother, by their father James Reid. This large tract of “wild land,” was his home in the early 1700’s and his “mansion” consisted of a one room house.
Ma hew Reid’s son, Lieutenant Abraham Reid, was the next to occupy the property. His brother was Captain George Reid, and he joined his company while they were figh ng with the American forces at Medford Massachuse s, soon a er the “Lexington alarm.” He fought in the ba le of Bunker Hill. A erwards, through the influence of Col. Stephen Holland, he became a loyalist. It is related that during the Revolu onary struggle, a Bri sh officer came secretly from Boston to spy out the land. He was entertained by Reid, and kept in concealment as much as possible. He was discovered. Robert Clendenin of Derry, a brother‐in‐law of Reid, went to him in great trou‐ble, and warned him to send the spy away, as he would certainly be arrested if it became generally known. Reid denied that the man was a spy. However, the warning had the desired effect, for the spy with his horse disappeared suddenly, to be seen no more. He mar‐ried Martha Humphrey of Derry. He sold his farm to Peter Duston on January 10, 1785, and removed to Derryfield, now Manchester, where he died.
Peter Duston was also a solider of the Revolu on. Duston was a character,— wi y, impulsive, impa ent, and fre ul. He loved his ap‐ples and cider. In the “good old mes,” muster‐day was a great day of enjoyment, and looked forward to with an cipa on of delight, and retrospec vely with great amusement. One me the muster took place on the hill about a forth of a mile south of Peter Duston’s house. A number had arrived and sprang from their horses, and began helping themselves from a pile of apples near at hand. They were seen by the impulsive Peter, and in a loud and comical tone, he exclaimed: “Boys! You are welcome, I say you are welcome, to all the apples you want to eat, but don’t fill your infernal saddle‐bags! Another me, during the great gale of 1815, Peter had a new four wheeled wagon. He had unhitched his horse, and le his wagon on the top of a hill. When the gale broke, the wagon was blown down the hill into a gu er where the wheel‐sha s were broken against a stone wall. Peter watched it all happen but was unable to do any‐thing to prevent it. When he saw his valuable wagon, the delight of his eye and the joy his heart going rapidly to destruc on, his wrath knew no bounds. He was not a religious man, not even moral at mes. When he beheld his wagon in the gu er his anger was uncontrol‐lable, he fairly raved, and gave vent to his wrath in language more forcible than pious.
His son, Moses Duston, took over the farm a er him. He and his wife Mary Morrion had one daughter, also named Mary who was born on October 16, 1818. She married Nathaniel Ripley in April of 1832. They remained on the Moses Duston farm un l Mary died in April of 1870.
Over the me the farm passed through many different hands. At the turn of the last century, the property was known as “Northland Farm.” It was a large and produc ve farm for many years.
Today, this beau ful property is being carefully developed, with strong efforts being made to preserve open space and natural areas on the property. Spruce Pond Estates, will offer it’s residents, a special place to call home.
