Moving into increasingly deeper waters has been a major trend in the development of offshore oil and gas discoveries. Compared to fixed platform solutions, development applying floaters and SPS-SURF solutions became increasingly important as discover-ies on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) called for solutions for water depths in excess of 200 – 300m.

The Norwegian oil & gas industry met this domestic challenge through R&D, feasibility studies and technology development and this resulted in innovative solutions initially qualified for field developments on the NCS.

It also resulted in a cluster of suppliers and service providers as well as companies with marine operations capability, required to implement the solutions in the field.

SPS-SURF solutions will play an increasingly important role as fields are to be developed in deeper and more remote areas – as well as for the development of marginal fields tied back to fixed or floating hubs covering larger areas.

Over the last 20 years Norwegian-based SPS-SURF companies has faced even bigger challenges in international markets and, through their deliveries, been recognized as a world class cluster. This catalogue presents the Norwegian SPS-SURF Cluster with its significant growth of SME companies as well as ship-owners moving into marine operations.

SPS – SURF Categories

The catalogue presents INTSOK partner companies and their competences and capabilities in SPS-SURF as well as a matrix for a quick overview of their capabilities. The main categories used in this capability catalogue are:

Engineering & Technical Services: Subsea and SURF technologies are highly specialized with particular demands on engineering & technical services; covering services from multiphase flow simulations, total system studies, pipeline and subsea architectural design to detailed installation and tie-in studies.

Subsea Production Systems (SPS): These systems can range in complexity from a single satellite well with one flowline tied back to a fixed platform or a floating installation, to several wells on a template or clustered around a manifold and transferring to a fixed or floating production facility . Subsea Production Systems include seabed located hardware, from wellheads and X-mas trees to templates, manifolds and connection systems for flowlines and risers, as well as potential subsea power, separation and boosting systems. Also specialized equipment like tooling for installing and maintaining the systems and working over the wells are included.

Umbilicals, Risers & Flowlines: The The hardware elements that are required to con-nect the subsea systems to a fixed platform or a floating unit.

Marine Operations and Intervention: The installation of hardware and servicing it throughout its life cycle requires marine installation and/or intervention vessels. The servicing requires deployment of tooling from an intervention vessel.

This catalogue showcases an innovative cluster of INTSOK partners covering the complete subsea architecture required for development of oil and gas discoveries in deepwater. They provide hi-tech solutions in a complementary and competing environment and are increasingly important for the sustainability of the Norwegian Oil & Gas supplier and service industry.

ABB AS

ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. Sustainability is integral to all aspects of our business. We strive to balance economic, environmental and social objectives and integrate them into our daily business decisions Technology plays a key role for ABB. We have activities all over the world working to develop unique technologies that make our customers more competitive, while minimizing environmental impact. ABB operates in more than 100 countries and has offices in 87 of those countries to give its global and local customers the support they need to develop and conduct their business successfully.

ABB Subsea SolutionsABB is an innovator in subsea solutions and has been involved in the development of subsea equip-ment and systems for many years. Feasibility studies on subsea components began in 1984, and the first commercial subsea transformer was delivered in 1998. Since then, ABB has delivered variable speed drive systems and transformers to some of the largest and most advanced offshore developments in the world. We will continue to support our customers’ long-term sustainable development by providing subsea power that go deeper and longer, and reli-able commmunication, monitoring and control for future subsea factories.

Subsea power solutionsABB is a leading supplier of power solutions to the oil and gas industry and offers a range of special-ized electric power systems, drives and service for critical subsea production equipment.Producing oil and gas from reservoirs located at long distances from land is a costly proposition that presents many challenges to offshore opera-tors. Subsea installations situated far from shore or remote platforms can be a very cost-efficient solution, as it may eliminate the need for a fixed or floating topside installation. To help operators achieve efficient electric power supply and control at long step-out distances, ABB offers total subsea power solutions with highly developed electrical products and associated services tailored for subsea production applications.

Why ABB?• We are an innovator in subsea power solutions

and have been involved in the development of subsea equipment and systems for many years

• Our studies on subsea components began in 1984• We delivered the first commercial subsea trans-

former in 1998• We have delivered more than 20 subsea trans-

formers to the industry

Subsea automation25+ years of experience with subsea control systemsIn the past few decades, ABB has developed a close relationship with the major subsea suppliers worldwide. Our systems support all the available subsea interfaces, such as FMC 722 from FMC Technologies, Modbus TCP from Aker Solutions and GE Vetco Gray, etc. We have delivered 46 subsea topside control system since 1986 and many more subsea modifications on existing subsea topside control systems. With more than 25 years’ experience with subsea systems, ABB is committed to our customer to provide secure, reliable and flexible subsea auto-mation solutions meeting all operational needs – today and in the future.

Tomorrow’s subsea solutionsToday, oil and gas processing and power supply are based on installations on platforms or floaters. This topside set-up not only impacts the environ-ment, but also needs many cables for power transmission and distribution, and requires strict human safety procedures. Besides, this set-up limits step-out distance. For reservoirs with long step-out distance, powering the subsea factories is not an easy task. With ABB’s new subsea AC solution, the power can be supplied up to 200 kilometers from shore with just one cable using standard 50/60 Hz solutions. Using low frequency AC solutions can increase the step out distance to around 400 kilometers, with power up to 100 MW output to support the subsea factories on the seabed. With the powerful electrical source, the factories on the seabed will achieve stable produc-tion, extending the feasibility of the field.

Sandvik Norge AS Branch Riser Technology

Sandvik Norge AS, branch Riser Technology design and manufacture the brand Sandvik ClikLoc® connector and riser tubes to be used within well completion and intervention work. Sandvik Norge AS is a part of Sandvik Material Technology AB who is a world leading manufacture of high value-added products in advanced stainless steel and special alloys.

PRODUCTS:The Sandvik ClikLoc™ – a revolution in multiple make and break connections. The new, patented, high performance ClikLoc from Sandvik Norge AS combines hook-up time savings with increased operating safety. Make and break can be reduced by at least 80%, and since no loose components or make-up tool are involved, the hazard of falling objects has been eliminated. Designed and manufactured in accordance with ISO 13628-7 and DNV GL certified for completion and workover riser systems, the Sandvik ClikLoc™ is a bayonet type, stab-in, self centering coupling which means no rotation of the riser during set-up. The metal to metal seal needs very low pretention – the weight of the riser joint is sufficient – and the seal guaranteed when locked. The seal is also reusable allowing multiple make and breaks. Sandvik ClikLoc™ is suitable for sour and standard service, the connector operates at temperatures up to 121ºC and pressure up to 10.000 psi. The Sandvik ClikLoc™ is made from powder technology, super duplex stainless steel grade Sandvik SAF 2507. Typical applications are coil tubing High Pressure stack-up risers, work over and completion risers and hook-up of landing string to slick (case wear) joint, flow head and BOP in CT and WL operations.

SELECTED REFERENCES:When performing production well cleanup opera-tion to a semi submersible drilling rig a landing string system is connected to the wellhead. Using traditional technology, the last connection of the landing string is made by rotating the assembly above the surface flow tree or use flange connec-tion who is time consuming. BP Norway at BP SKARV and Marathon Norway at ALVHEIM choose to use the Sandvik ClikLoc™. The customer’s concludes: “Overall we have been very pleased with the connector. It has certainly made connecting the surface flow tree assembly and above equipment much simpler and safer than other connection.” The largest foreign operator in Norway continental shelf was looking for a safer and time saving alterna-tive to the conventional rigging of coil tubing stack up risers. Conventional rigging of a 30-meter tall riser tower involves more than 900 potentially falling objects. One single bolt can weigh as much as 4 Kg.

By employing Sandvik ClikLoc™ at Ekofisk X in the North Sea for well intervention, the oil company able to increase crew safety dramatically. Speedy rig up and rig down has minimized the time the well intervention riser tower has to occupy valu-able time on the platform skid deck. Other company using the Sandvik ClikLoc™ is Baker Hughes, Well Partner AS, Total E&P Norge, Shlumberger and Statoil.

Seabox AS

The patented SWIT® technology enables injection of sea water treated to any desired specification including low salinity water directly on the seabed. The most flexible and cost effective solution. The technology, enables a step change in reservoir and asset manage-ment, accelerating production and increasing recovery. Total investments and cost of production facilities will be significantly reduced.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES:The SWIT® technology offers a different approach to how reservoir and assets are managed and produced. Cleaning the surrounding sea water at the seabed and feeding directly into subsea injec-tion wells or to a platform or floater is a completely different concept than the traditional topside approach. The benefits are significant from many aspects; reduced weight and area required top-side; no long reach platform water injectors (WI) required; acceleration of production; increased recovery through flexible and phased deployment of the WI capacity required.A total of 24 months full scale pilot testing has been conducted in the Oslo fjord. The SWIT® cleaned water was pumped to shore to NIVA Marine Research Centre for monitoring and test-ing. The results exceeded expectations and docu-mented superior water quality for WI compared to traditional topside facilities. The Joint Industry

Project (JIP) companies verified the results and technology is ready to be used in field applica-tions. SWIT® has been approved via technology qualification program with major oil companies and is currently being considered in a number of projects globally. In 2013 another JIP was successfully completed proving that SWIT® feeding membranes make membranes last very long without any degrada-tion in performance or maintenance requirement. A new JIP started fall 2014, taking the final step to a fully integrated subsea SWIT® + membrane facility, enabling low sulphate and low salinity water injection from seabed as well.
