GENERAL NOTES
A. GENERAL
1. DESIGN BASED ON IBC 2006 AND ALL REFERENCED STANDARDS PER
CHAPTER 35 OF IBC 2006 TO INCLUDE ASCE 7-05 FOR LOADS, ACI 318-05
FOR CONCRETE, AND ACI 530-05 FOR MASONRY. THE IBC 2006 SHALL BE
USED FOR ALL CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN ACTIVITIES.
2. GENERAL NOTES AND STANDARD DRAWINGS APPLY TO ALL STRUCTURAL
WORKS UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.
3. THE DRAWINGS SHOW THE FINISHED STRUCTURE. THE DRAWINGS DO
NOT INDICATE THE MEANS OR METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION.
4. ESTABLISH AND VERIFY ALL OPENINGS AND INSERTS FOR MECHANICAL,
ELECTRICAL, AND PLUMBING WITH APPROPRIATE TRADE CONTRACTORS.
5. NO STRUCTURAL CHANGE FROM THE APPORVED PLANS AND
SPECIFICATIONS SHALL BE MADE IN THE FIELD UNLESS WRITTEN APPROVAL
FROM THE COR IS OBTAINED PRIOR TO MAKING SUCH CHANGE. CHANGES
WITHOUT THE WRITTEN APPROVAL SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE
CONTRACTOR TO BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED AS DIRECTED.
6. ALL MATERIALS MUST CONFORM TO ASTM STANDARDS.
B. LOADING
1. STRUCTURE IS DESIGNED IN ACCORDANCE WITH IBC 2006 SEISMIC DESIGN
CATEGORY D WITH SEISMIC PARAMETERS Ss = 1.5 and S1 = 0.6.
2. LIVE LOADS = 2.4KN/M2 FOR GROUND AND FIRST FLOOR, AND 0.96
KN/M2 FOR ROOF.
3. DEAD LOADS - SELF WEIGHT + 1 KN/M2 FOR GROUND AND
FIRST FLOOR AND 3.4 KN/M2 FOR ROOF.
4. WIND LOADS = 160KPH
C. FOUNDATION
1. DESIGN SOIL BEARING CAPACITY IS 40 KN PER SQUARE METER. THIS
BEARING CAPACITY MUST BE VALIDATED WITH A GEOTECHNICAL REPORT.
2. SULPHATE RESISTING CEMENT (TYPE V) SHALL BE USED IN ALL
CONCRETE WORKS IN CONTACT WITH EARTH.
3. THE SUB-BASE MATERIAL (20% CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO AS A LOWER
LIMIT) SHALL BE USED UNDERNEATH FOOTINGS AND SLABS. THE SUB-BASE
SHALL BE PLACED IN LAYERS LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 20 CM THICK AND
COMPACTED TO 95% OF THE MAXIMUM DENSITY MEASURED BY MODIFIED
PROCTOR.
4. ALL CONCRETE IN CONTACT WITH THE SOIL MUST BE ISOLATED WITH 6
MILTHICK PLASTIC.
5. A FLINT COAT SHALL BE APPLIED TO ALL FOUNDATION AND WALL
SURFACES THAT COME INTO DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE EARTH.
6. SEE S-101 FOR SLAB DEPRESSION LOCATIONS.
7. COLUMN DOWELS SHALL EXTEND OUT OF THE TOP OF THE FOUNDATION
TO THE TOP OF THE SPLICE. THE SPLICE OCCURS AT THE MID-HEIGHT OF
THE COLUMN. SEE SHEET S-504.
D. REINFORCED CONCRETE
1. MINIMUM 28 DAY COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH IS 21 MPa WITH STANDARD
CYLINDER TESTING.
2. ALL REINFORCING BARS SHALL BE DEFORMED AND SHALL COMPLY WITH
ACI 318-05 SECTION 3.5.3.1 AND HAVE A MINIMUM YIELD STRESS OF 420
MPa.
3. CLEAR COVER FOR REINFORCMENT SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS
A) BEAMS AND COLUMNS: 40 MM
B) FOOTINGS: 75 MM
C) SLAB: 20 MM
4. REQUIREMENTS FOR HOT WEATHER CONCRETE SHALL BE IN
ACCORDANCE WITH ACI 305R-99 AND ACI 318-05 SECTION 5.13.
5. THE VALUES OF SLUMP TESTS OF THE CONCRETE SHALL NOT EXCEED
125 MM AND ADDITIVES CAN BE USED WITH WATER AND SHALL COMPLY
WITH ACI 318-05 SECTION 3.6.
6. COLUMNS AND BEAMS SHALL USE ACCEPTABLE SEISMIC HOOPS SEE
SHEETS S-505 AND S-509 RESPECTIVELY.
E. STRUCTURAL STEEL
1. ALL STRUCTURAL STEEL SHALL BE GRADE A36 WITH YIELD STRESS (Fy)
EQUAL TO 248 MPa.
2. ALL STEEL PARTS SHALL CONFORM TO AISC 360-05.
F. REINFORCED MASONRY BLOCK
1. REINFORCED MASONRY BLOCK SHALL BE USED FOR THE WALLS
INDICATED ON DRAWING S-102 FOR THE MAIN POLICE STATION BUILDING AND
ALL OF THE EXTERIOR WALLS FOR THE GUARD TOWER AND RECEPTION
BUILDING. HORIZONTAL REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE 12 MM DIAMETER AND
SPACED NO MORE THAN 80 CM. VERTICAL REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE 12
MM DIAMETER AND SPACED NO MORE THAN 40 CM. SEE STRUCTURAL
DRAWINGS FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
2. REINFORCED CONCRETE BLOCK WALLS SHALL BE LOAD BEARING AND
SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM C145 AND C90 (TYPE 1, GRADE N) WITH A
MINIMUM COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 10.0 MPa AT 28 DAYS.
3. MORTAR USED IN MASONRY CONSTRUCTION SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM
C270 (TYPE S) AND IBC 2006 TABLES 2103.8(1) AND THE PROPERTY
SPECIFICATIONS OF TABLE 2103.8(2) WITH A MINIMUM COMPRESSIVE
STRENGTH OF 10 MPa.
4. GROUT MIX SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM C476 WITH A MINIMUM
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 10.0 MPa.
5. ALL REINFORCING BARS SHALL BE DEFORMED AND SHALL COMPLY WITH
