In The News.

AUGUST 2008 “For the ladies of Square Rootz, the push and pull of MySpace always trumps traditional marketing when getting the word out about their year-old lifestyle and media collective. They post announcements there for Philadelphia and New York events. They link MySpace friends to the grassroots organization's blog entries. MySpace acts as an indispensable

business tool, says the group's cofounder, Marly Pierre-Louis…” Click here to read full version of article: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/image/20080827_Two_ways_of_seeing_the_sites.html.

JULY 2008

“Maybe it was all the ironic dance parties. Maybe it was the unfortunate leg warmers revival. It definitely had something to do with the VH1 specials. Whatever the case, people finally got sick of the '80s. Leading the vanguard of a new, more relevant nostalgia is Philly/Brooklyn-

based Square Rootz Collective. The street-beating lifestyle and media group will celebrate its one year anniversary with their Square Rootz Hella Hearts You Jam, styled after the glorious summer of '92. Although '92 certainly recalls the halcyon days before George W. (or even feisty White House interns) was a speck in America's eye, Square Rootz is summoning a different kind of history — that of carefree summers. Collective member Marly Pierre-Louis hopes that the rooftop party will help elicit simpler, cheaper times. "We were thinking about childhood summers and how fun they were, because you didn't care about anything. As long as your bicycle had air in the tires, you didn't need money because you had your friends," she says. And so Square Rootz has thrown in all the stomach-churning staples of childhood — jump rope, Hula Hoop and slushies — along with some more grown-up delights, such as catering by South Street eateries Ms. Tootsie's and the Shouk Lounge. Additionally, a DJ will be on hand to spin '90s hip-hop and old-school tunes. Best of all, partygoers are asked to come dressed in '90s gear, which means you can finally break out those cargo pants and baby tees you've been saving just in case.”

JUNE 2008

“You might want that halter in four colors, but your closet isn't so psyched. In fact, it's stuffed, strained and cluttered thanks to your Sunday afternoon retail therapy and is in the process of forming an alliance with your wallet. Fortunately, Square Rootz has a solution to keep the peace. The Philly- and NYC-based collective is taking over the Rotunda with a clothing swap for ladies and gentlemen with threads to spare. In exchange for a bag of shoes, clothes, purses and accessories, attendees will get to "shop" through the unwanted wardrobes of others. Pieces that don't

find a home (i.e. that ill-advised 2007 vest collection you were hoping to unload) will be donated instead of sentenced to a landfill. Think formal vests were actually kind of cute? This is where Jeneen Nicole comes in. The wardrobe stylist (whose work is pictured) is coming down from New York for the day to help confused fashionistas sort through the treasures. "Everyone can't wear skinny jeans," she says. "I just like to help people look great. If you want to look like a magazine shoot, I can try to help you do that. But I will make you look better."
