THINKS THE HOSTS WILL NEED A BIT OF LUCK TONIGHT,
AND THAT COLNE ARE HIS FAVOURITES TO WIN THE
LEAGUE...
Good evening and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium for our
league fixture against Colne FC. May I welcome all associated with Colne
and wish you a safe journey home.
Saturday's performance and result sums up our season very well so far.
A good performance in the first half which saw us hit the woodwork 3
times and create numerous other chances didn't stop us going in at half
time 2-0 down.
The 2nd half saw a much more even affair which we end up winning 1-0.
So all in all a game which we were never 2nd best we end up losing 2-1...I
feel so many other games this season have been like that! We need to
start being clinical in both boxes...I hope that starts tonight.
Colne have continued to build on last season and I would say they are
probably my favourites to win the league, so tonight is going to be an
exceptionally tough task. They've started the season superbly and have
the potential to blow teams away with the attacking players they have in
their side. We'll give it our best shot though and hope that Lady Luck and
officiating decisions will be on our side for once this season.
During these tough times for the club may I thank you for your continued
support and I hope to see you at School Road for our next home fixture.

One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. Wes is a highly promising defender that arrives in time for the start of the 2015/16 sea-son. He has experience playing in National League North football but is looking to develop through regular football with Squires Gate. Wes is comfortable playing at both centre back or right back and can even play in midfield if needed.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship)
A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has be-come a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore)
Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individu-al displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Terry Cummings (Available for sponsorship)
Terry is a graduate of Myerscough College. He made his debut on the opening day of this season against 1874 Northwich. He is a forward player capable of playing across the front of any of the attacking positions in midfield. With bags of skill and ability, he’ll be hoping to make his mark on the season at the earliest opportunity.
Keiffer Cunningham (Available for sponsorship)
Kiefer is a very promising young player that can play in numerous attacking positions. He made a limited number of appearances last year due to work commitments but is hoping to make a big impact this season. A young prospect with plenty to offer.
Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)
Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experi-ence of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was in-fluential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Josh Kay (Available for sponsorship)
One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personal-ity which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship)
Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship)
The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.
Ashley Rowley (Available for sponsorship)
Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White)
Danny is the captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influen-tial player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship)
Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship)
Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who pos-sesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in at-tacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

GATES WINLESS RUN CONTINUES
Squires Gate hosted Congleton Town on Saturday afternoon looking to improve on recent
form and pick up their first 3 points of the season. Gate made two changes from Wednes-
day nights draw with Wes Benjamin and Terry Cummings coming In for Josh Kay and Na-
than Trout who dropped to the bench.
Gate made a good start to the game and could have gone ahead through Mark Buchan.
Brett Ferguson made a good run down the left and crossed a superb ball into the box but
Buchan couldn’t reach the cross. Billy Mckenna found good space on the edge of the box
to receive the ball from the throw in but his shot cannoned back off the crossbar the ball
falling to Cummings but he couldn’t convert inside the six-yard box. Congleton’s first
chance of the game came for their Number 8 but the midfielder pulled his shot wide of goal
not testing Fletcher in net. Gate had the next chance but again the woodwork came to Con-
gleton rescue. A good backwards header from Buchan found Cummings but his shot can-
noned off the underside of the crossbar and out much to Gate’s dismay. Cummings had
another chance soon after but again his shot cannoned back of the woodwork for the third
time in the first half for Gate. With Congleton’s first real chance of the game they took the
lead. Scott McGowan beating Gate’s offside trap to run clear and slot the ball under Ben
Fletcher to open the scoring. Congleton would make Gates day worse when just a minute
before half time they doubled the lead.
The second half was as action packed for either team and mainly consisted of Gate trying
to break Congleton’s defence down. But Gate struggled to create clear chances like they
had in the first half. A change in system for Gate allowed them to attack the game more.
Captain Danny Penswick had the chance to pull one back for Gate but his free kick was su-
perbly saved by the Congleton keeper. Gate would find the break through with 7 minutes
left to play. Mark Buchan rising highest to
head the ball home and give Gate a re-
newed hope. Josh Westwood could have
pulled it back to 2-2 but his header from
the corner with 3 minutes to go was wide.
But Congleton would defend well and see
out the 2-1 victory. Gate unlucky on the
day and should have left School Road with
all 3 points.

BISHOPS BOYS STILL UNBEATEN FOXHALL HOOPS 2-5 SQUIRES GATE
The boys started brightly with Brogan Grundy winning a penalty which was dispatched
calmly by Josh Dolby-Armstrong. The one way play continued, however over playing and
missed opportunities caused frustration. A second eventually came when Jack Robinson
scored from a shot from outside the area that found the bottom corner.
The half continued the same pattern, until a loose pass was intercepted and Foxhall's
striker was released and placed the ball around the oncoming Harry Ahern. Straight after
that Foxhall were unfortunate not to be level with the ball striking the bar and returning
to Ahern's hands.
The second half started with a similar theme to the first with fluent attacks. However
completely against the run of play a half volley caught Gate unaware making the score 2-
2.
There was then a spell where there was a need to dig in to ensure they didn't lose their
unbeaten start. The introduction of Myers, Robinson, Stefani and Nicholas changed the
game adding pace into the attack. With Myers scoring immediately after coming on. Mil-

Funnily enough Gate captain shares his birthday with ex Man United and Ireland
captain Roy Keane. He also shares it with Pulp Fiction actress Rosanna Arquette.
THE YEAR IN FOOTBALL
It was Liverpool’s season as they were Division One champions ahead of Aston Villa
and Tottenham Hotspur. Defending champions Arsenal could only finish 4th. Sheffield
Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Millwall were all relegated to the second division.
Leeds United made it back to the first division after an eight year absence, and they
were joined by Sheffield United and Swindon Town. It was a good year for Bristol as
both Bristol clubs were promoted to the second division, but City had the bragging
rights of being champions.
English clubs did not compete in Europe due to the five year ban they received for the
Heysel Stadium disaster, where there was 600 injuries and 39 deaths. AC Milan were
the winners of the European Cup as they beat Benfica 1-0 thanks to a Rijkaard goal
with 20 minutes to go.
In the World Cup, it was not a good year for England fans as not only did they get beat
by West Germany in the semi finals - on penalties, their two fiercest rivals went head
to head - West Germany vs Argentina. West Germany beat the defending champions
and ran out 1-0 winners in Italy.

Colne F.C. were formed in Jan 1996, by a group of like-minded people under the wing of Dave Blacklock
who is now the chairman. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non league
football, and arrangements were made for a new club to use the vacant Holt House Stadium, once used
by the Dynamoes in the North West Counties Football League Division Two. Colne FC’s first ever com-
petitive game was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich.
Season 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. We completed the
double by winning the Division Two Trophy 1 – 0 over Great Harwood. The season was capped by an
amazing run in the FA Vase for a North West Counties Football League Division Two club, we progressed
all the way to the semi-finals, (via an incredible 1 – 2 away win at AFC Wimbledon!) before getting beat
over two legs 4 – 3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. As the season progressed, attendances started to rise
as the local population realised we were no longer the whipping boys of the league, and the famous RED
ARMY was formed.
Season 2014-15 proved to be the best ever in terms of league placing, with Colne finishing a creditable
fourth. No doubt the management team have ambitions to improve on that in 2015-16.
With all this going on, due to the fantastic efforts of a strong and loyal band of followers and officials
including the resurrected “ Red Army “ and the continued support from our main sponsors XLCR Vehicle

Squires Gate looked tip top, as they posed in their new strip before the
kick off. But with only ten minutes on the clock and with Gate looking the
better side, up popped a banana skin, and the visitors took the lead when
Gate lost the ball in the visitors half, and were dearly punished when Colne
striker Jason Hart, caught Ben Fletcher way off his line, and neatly slotted
home the opening goal. Gate were looking confident attacking and defend-
ed more thoroughly, but despite efforts from Andy Richards and Seydou
Bamba they were unable to find a gap in the Colne defence.
Half time came and went, and despite Jack Sowerby and Ben Fishwick making inroads there was no finishing touch.
Plus with all the attacking the home side were doing, there was always the danger of a space for a side the caliber
of Colne to take advantage. Craig Carney, came on as sub, for his debut, and was immediately involved in the ac-
tion, he raced to pick up a loose ball on the half way line and crossed to Andy Richards, who beat defender and
keeper, looking certain to score, only to be brought down, by a dive from the keeper, and before the referee could
make his mind up to award a penalty or not, in raced Ben Fishwick to blast home Gate's equaliser. Then before the
visitors could compose themselves, Andy Harvey who had replaced the injured Jamie Bryson, at left back very early
in the game, picked up the ball in his own half raced forward, inter passed with sub Craig Carney, and then took the
ball at the defence racing past defenders into the penalty area before unleashing a pile driver, into the bottom left
corner of the net, to win the game for Squires Gate and elevate them to their highest place in the table for two sea-
sons. Chris Churchman came on as sub, and his fresh legs helped Gate keep control until the final whistle came.
A trip to Colne is tough task any day, with their slopping pitch, but with strong winds battering the hills it was going to be
more difficult. Before the game started Gate lost the services of Sam Farrow in midfield He turned the ankle injured the
previous Sat, and had to take a seat as a spectator, with Jack Hindle taking his place.
Playing up hill to start with, and the wind that usually helps by blowing up hill, was inconsistent, changing direction, but
the rain was persistent, and the blasts making it hard to control the ball. The home side put the visitors to the test, and
went ahead after only 4 mins. A cross from the Colne left, was not cleared and went across goal, for Christopher Ander-
son, to ghost in from the back post to score. There was no let up as Gate tried to puss up into attack, and Jamie McQuil-
lan, picked the ball up in midfield to race towards goal, only to be brought down, as he approached the penalty area, but
the free kick was blocked and cleared. Then on 12 mins. Colne went further ahead, when Jason Hart jinxed in from the
left and shot into the bottom corner for the second goal. The conditions were not for good skilful football, and we didn't
see any on display. Before the half hour, a long ball from the home defence bounced into Gate's area, and Mark Coyne
was the first to react, and scored Colne's third goal on 28mins.
The feeling of some of the spectators was that Gate might come out and pull some goals back with the advantage of the
slope. But despite the visitors pushed forward and attacking, most of the efforts went over the crossbar, and when Gate
got a free kick Andy Richards, looked to have come up with a goal, beating the five man wall, but Christopher Thompson,
pulled off a great save diving to his left and pushing the ball over the bar. Keeping the home side chances in the second
half down to a handful, of efforts, which Ben Fletcher dealt with comfortably, but with a clearance down the home sides
right, where Nathan Bond, crossed for Micky Woodvine, to score into the bottom corner sealed Gates fifth defeat in a
row, and leaves them in 20th position only 2 points above the relegation position.

Colne sat three points and five places above Squires Gate with 16 points from 10 games.
It was the home side who started the brighter having plenty of possession early on looking
confident on the ball. But it was Gate who had the first chance, an early cross in from Alex
Murphy on the right almost caught out Colne keeper Thompson but he recovered well to
tip the ball over the bar. Gates defence was cut in half by a pass through the middle of
them which found Chris Anderson to give the home side the lead. Gate could have equal-
ised soon after but the home sides goal keeper got down well to deny Hothersall at his feet.
Gate were restricted to mostly long shots during the first half but couldn't capitalise from
any of them with the home side first to very ball.
The home side could have made it two late on but quick thinking from Chris Anderson on
the line after the ball rebounded of the bar saved Gate.
Into the second half and it looked to be much like the first, the home side first to every ball
not letting Gate time on the ball. Gate were made to pay on the 51st minute when the ball
was fired across the 6 yard box to find an unmarked Tom Berwick at the back post to tap in
the ball. This goal seemed to get to Gate and fired them up. It wasn't until the 60th minute
that Gate really got going. Gate had many chances to get a goal back but Colnes defence
stood tall and strong to deny them. Despite the efforts of subs Dickinson and Dunn get just

It was a very tight and nervy first half with both sides having chances.gate could have been
ahead after 10 minutes But the Colne keeper got down well to keep out Harry Dunn. Colne
replied and could have gone ahead but Danny Penswick was back on the line to save what
would have been a sure goal. Gets last real chance of the half fell to Alex Murphy but his
drive from the edge if the box could only find the post. Gate finished the half showing a and
impressive defensive display to see the and through to half time.
Gate started the second half on top and had Chances to go ahead through Murphy and
Penswick but neither could finish. It was down the other end where Gate will be counting
there blessings Colne coming inches from scoring but no one could react quick enough as
the ball trickled along the line and was cleared. The next 10 minutes saw Gate keeper Ben
Fletcher pull off a string of fabulous saves as Colne piled on the pressure. Fletcher well and
truly keeping Gate in the game.
After Gate had soaked up the Colne pressure they had another chance to go ahead but the
Colne defender just got his head on the cross to put the ball out for a corner. Unfortunately
Gate couldn't capitalise from the corner. Substitute Sean Holmes had a chance to win the
game late in but his shot roll straight into the gloves of the Colne goal keeper.

We interviewed Colne FC fan Michael Fletcher and asked him about how he
thinks Colne will progress on last seasons finish, what three Premier League
players he’d want to see at his club, and the best moment he has seen in his
time…
After last seasons strong finish, how are you looking to progress? Do you think you
have a strong enough chance to push for promotion?
I’m hoping we can win the league but it will be tough. The squad is really strong, at the
game against AFC Liverpool it was mentioned in the stand that there are players who
can’t even get on the bench at the minute and there are some are out with injuries.
Which players do you think will cause the most threat to opposition this season?
It’s hard to single out one or two players who can hurt the opposition. At the game
against AFC Darwen, we had six different players score, but saying that Jay Hart for me,
is on top form and will be a scary proposition for any opponent.
What was the best moment and game that you have experienced at Colne?
The game against Nelson last week, with the last minute winner, coupled with the break
in and vandalism that happened before. The people who helped get the ground fit ti
host the game, it meant so much to a lot of people.
Which teams are you looking forward to going up against this season?
If we want promotion, Runcorn Linnets and 1874 Northwich will be the big tests so we
will need to get results there.
If you could pick three players from the Premier League to join Colne, who would they
be and why?
I don’t like Premier League Pre-Madonna’s . Give me a bunch of local non league guys
who have jobs and then play football any day.
You’re currently top of the league, and you’re coming away to a team who are finding
it hard at the bottom. Are you expecting a comfortable win tonight?
I’m definitely not expecting an easy game, teams are at their most dangerous when
they are written off and not respected.
How do you think Squires Gate will finish this season?
I’ll be honest and say I don’t know much about Squires Gate but if encouragement is
needed, then look at Bacup last season, I think they only had five points at Christmas
and only got relegated in the 90th plus minute on the last day.
Prediction for tonight’s game?
Squires Gate 1-3 Colne, it’s our favourite away day score.

Colne have had a fantastic start, and I’m sure their fans will tell you that this man has
played a massive role in their unbeaten league form which has put them top after eight
games. Colne have played 17 games in all competitions this season and it’s only the
fearsome pairing of Danny Boyle and Jay Hart that have played in every single one. The
pair have netted 19 times between them as they look set to fire Colne to promotion this
season.
Boyle has proved he is a prolific goalscorer throughout last campaign, as he was the
reds’ top scorer with 36 times in 46 games. He also had an eye for build up play as he
assisted his team mates 7 times last term. This season, Danny has continued to carry on
his fine goal scoring form, already netting 12 goals , including the all important equaliser
as the reds went on to beat their local rivals 2-1.
He has spent time playing for Barnoldswick Town, Northwich Victoria and most recently
Padiham, but returned to Colne at the start of last season. Manager Steve Cunningham
said at the time “I am over the moon to have finally landed a player who I believe can
achieve great things in non league football” Cunningham was in the same side as Danny
in his previous spell at the club and saw him grow into a very talented player over the
last few seasons. He also added that he had tried to sign Boyle three times - while he
was involved at Ashton Athletic and Padiham.
At the start of the 2014/15 season. Boyle explained why he chose to come back to
Colne and explained that Cunningham has been a big influence on his football and that
he never really settled in as much as he did at the reds. He also stated what was he was
hoping to achieve within his time at the club. “I am here to enjoy my football but I also
want to win a league winners medal, and I believe I can do that with Colne FC”
That is a great sign for today’s visitors as they currently sit top of the NWCFL Premier
Division, and Boyle is the current top goalscorer. Boyle will be looking to add to his club
record tally, and sure will help fire them to promotion if he carries on to find the net
with his strike partner.
In last seasons meetings, Boyle netted only the once against Squires Gate in their 3-0
win this time last year. However, in the reverse fixture, Boyle failed to find the net as
Gate defended well and marked him out of the game.

Squires Gate reserves made the long journey to Workington Town on Wednesday night, as they played their first leg of the Lancashire Cup. Gate fought hard but on the 71st minute, Workington took the lead through sub Jonny Murray and their lead was soon doubled 8 minutes later when Robbie Hebson looked to have given Workington a comfortable advantage going into the 2nd leg. However, in the 90th minute, Barney Morris climbed higher then the defenders to give Gate a consolation going into the second leg.

I was on the train to Newcastle on Saturday and overheard a conversation between a
Gateshead supporter and a Manchester United fan. “Why do you support a non league
club? Where’s the fun in that? It’s not like you’re ever going to win the Premier League” I
heard the United fan ask. Despite going to watch my team play Newcastle, in the Premier
League, I felt like asking “When did football just involve the Premier League?”. I’ve now
volunteered at Squires Gate for two seasons, and at times non league football can be bril-
liant. When I first started, I couldn’t believe that the away fans weren’t segregated from
the home supporters, as I thought there would be crowd trouble.
I have now started to travel around the country to watch some different non league games
as well as watching Watford, and I enjoy it just as much as I do watching my team. Last
season me and my brother, Jay, went down to Hyde United for their game against
Harrogate. We arrived in Manchester at 10am to grab some breakfast, and have a look
around the National Football Museum and then set off to Hyde at 14:30. Slightly misjudg-
ing the time it took to get to the ground, we arrived 10 minutes into the game, managing
to pick up the last programme luckily enough! Hyde were on the brink of relegation, and
anything but a win would almost secure their fate of back to back relegations. Harrogate
took the lead in the first half, and looked to have won it as Hyde were still trailing in injury
time. 95 minutes gone, and the ball had gone out for a goal kick, and me and Jay set off
thinking the game was over. However, just as we left the ground and got around the cor-
ner, we heard a roar from the home supporters and Hyde had equalised in the 96th mi-
nute. It’s safe to say we were a bit disappointed that we missed the goal. It finished Hyde
United 1-1 Harrogate Town.
Last week, we decided to take the short trip on the train to Kirkham & Wesham. This time
we were off to watch AFC Fylde vs FC United of Manchester, two sides who I had wanted
to see the previous season so now was the perfect chance. FC United have just been pro-
moted to the National League North and Fylde missed out on promotion to the National
League in the play offs. We got to Kirkham with plenty of time to spare, and loaded google
maps for the directions to the stadium ( we should of planned ahead!). We walked down
to the apparent location of the stadium, however there was no sign of any field, or flood-
lights, only a Morrisons. After asking a few people, we were actually 4 miles away with 15
minutes to kick off. The only option was to get a taxi to the ground.
Arriving just in time for kick off, we entered the ground and picked up a programme, and
walked to where the FCUM supporters were standing. I was quite surprised with how
many fans they bought to a Tuesday night game, a great following. AFC Fylde took the lead
early on in the first half, but it was still end to end football and FCUM were hungry for an
equaliser but were only able to find the crossbar.
The second half was even once again, but this was to be changed when the United of Man-
chester keeper saw red after he bought down the last man, leading to a free kick outside
the box. Struck brilliantly, it found the top left corner and Fylde looked certain for the win.
I’m not sure if Dion Charles had meant to add a third but his cross found the top corner as
Fylde extended their lead to three. FCUM fans were still chanting down the opposite end
despite conceding a fourth in stoppage time. An enjoyable way to spend my Tuesday night,
and it only cost me £20! Who says non league football can’t be entertaining?

RESILIENT GATE FIGHT BACK IN
SEVEN GOAL THRILLER
Squires Gate came back from 3-1
to score three-second half goals, to
lift them up the table to 14th.
They went behind after 4 minutes,
and were caught out again after 12
minutes resulting Gate trailing 2-
nil. The first goal followed Gate
winning the first corner of the
game, the home clearance was
picked up by Bacup’s Shaun Plummer who raced down the left, beating the Gate de-
fence to score. Ten minutes later when the visitors had three consecutive corners,
again the home sides clearance resulted in the second goal scored by B&RBFC's tricky
striker Glodi Kuba-Kuba. It took a while for the visiting defence to settle and although
they produced most of the pressure, it took 28 mins before Jack Sowerby began the
fight back, with a characteristic race through the defence from forty yards out before
slotting the ball past the keeper. Then on the half hour Borough scored a third,
through Sam Crook, before, Jake Forshaw, reduced the deficit on the 32nd min. the
teams went to the dressing rooms at the break wondering what the second half
would produce.
It was Squires Gate that made most of the running, but on a couple of occasions Ben
Fletcher, had to come to their rescue, and brought off a great right handed save turn-
ing a shot past the post from the home sides striker, Glodi Kuba-Kuba, playing his sec-
ond game for Bacup. As a result of a
move down the left Harry Dunn
pushed the ball through the defence,
to Jack Sowerby, who slipped it in
front of Alex Murphy, and he gave the
home keeper no chance, shooting into
the bottom right hand corner, to put
the Gate level on three goals each.
Both teams put everything into taking
the three points, but leading scorer

midweek visit to Colne, raced onto a long ball down the middle, and beat defence to
