    'm 5/;+ < --9/5,, of NH45 is #nder the maintenance control of :hennai

    National High&ays 6ivision3 *n this stretch ma=or 0edilam (ridge at 'm 59/8 of

    NH45 is sit#ated at the heart of the to&n3

    E.isting etails of the Bridge '

    %he road serves for heavy flo& of traffic3 %he Pennaiyar Bridge located in

    Km 59/8 of NH 45 is one of the important ma=or (ridges of :#ddalore 6istrict

    &hich has heavy flo& of traffic3 %he Bridge &as constr#cted d#ring -9943 *t has

    -+ spans of +;3, mts3 %he total length of the Bridge is +,34,m and the &idth of

    the carriage &ay is 35,m3 %ho#gh the str#ct#re is in good condition the

    >?pansion @oints and earing :oat are completely damaged and hence it is

    necessary to replace the damaged e?pansion =oints and &earing coat3

    6#e to the damaged e?pansion =oint the concrete at the edges of the sla(

    has also got damaged &ith &ide gap ca#sing t&o &heelers and animals getting

    str#c' into the holes &hich in t#rn ca#se ma=or and minor in=#ry3 %he heavy and

    light vehicles &hich passes the gap =er's and =olts ca#sing inconvenience to the

    passengers and dist#r(s the driving control ca#sing damages to vehicles and

    accidents3 henever heavily loaded vehicles pass the (ridge the damages

    increase and the gap gets &idened3 N#m(er of "*Ps &ho happen to pass throA

    this road often complain a(o#t the damaged e?pansion =oints and represent to

    rectify the same early3 %he :hief >ngineer !NH$ :hennai has also inspected the

    site and has given instr#ctions to ta'e necessary action3 *f the repair is not

    carried o#t early the damages are lia(le to get &orse leading to #nto&ard

    incidents and p#(lic criticism3 Hence it is necessary to reha(ilitate the damaged

    e?pansion =oint in this (ridge (y replacing the damaged e?pansion =oint (y strip

    steel e?pansion =oint and the &earing coat (y mastic asphalt to improve the

    safety of the (ridge str#ct#re3

    Besides the handrails on (oth sides of the (ridge got completely

    damaged giving a deserted loo' #estioning the safety of the p#(lic and the

    vehicles plying throA this (ridge3

    Proposals'

    %o prevent f#rther damages to the str#ct#re and to avoid accidents it is

    essential to replace the e?isting damaged e?pansion =oints3 *t is proposed toreplace all the damaged e?pansion =oints &ith Strip Seal e?pansion =oints3 Since

    the &earing coat is crac'ed in many places it has (een proposed to lay 2astic

    sphalt earing :oat of +5mm thic' layer conforming to *R: -, . -99+ over

    :: &earing coat3

    1n #pstream and do&n stream sides of the (ridges at 'm 59/8 the

    earthen mo#nds and vegetations are o(str#cting the flo& of river &ater3 Hence it

    is necessary to remove the earthen mo#nds and "egetation3

    -n this estimate0 the follo1ing provisions are given as follo1s '
