NATIONAL CONCLAVE ON “ACCREDITATION AND BENCH MARKING”

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Sree Buddha College of Engineering organized a National Conclave on “Accreditation and

Bench marking: An approach towards quality enhancement in technical education on 21- 22nd Decemebr 2018. The workshop

was opened with the welcome note by Dr. M. S. Senthil Saravanan. Organizing Secretary & Coordinator- IQAC in the inaugural session at 9.30 am on 21st Dec, 2018. Dr. S. Suresh Babu, Principal & Chairperson- IQAC explained about the conclave. In his speech, he mentioned the various programs organized in SBCE to promote awareness about the quality enhancement. The felicitation address was given by Shri. K. K. Sivadasan, Treasurer, Sree Buddha Educational Society. Mr. Binu Sankar, Director, Ernest & Young inaugurated the Conclave and Dr. Gopakumar, Coordinator of National Conclave delivered the Vote of Thanks. On the first day, Mr. Binu Sankar delivered a plenary talk on Engineering education in India: Vision 2030. He said that Contribution to National Development, fostering global competencies among students, inculcating value system in students, promoting use of technology and quest for excellence are the core values of future engineering education. In the afternoon, Dr. Saji Varghese, NBA Coordinator of SBCE delivered speech on Outcome Based Education. The second day of the National Conclave was opened by Dr. T.O. Suresh Kumar, Managing Director, MAKS Automations at 9.30 am. He has thrown light on Entrepreneurship quality of students. Dr. S. Suresh Babu presided over the valedictory function and distributed participant certificates. Participants have expressed their pleasure attending the workshop and interacted with the resource persons during and after the sessions.

DONATION TO CHIEF MINISTERS RELIEF FUNDGovernment of Kerala have invited financial support from various organizations, Institutions and public for resurgence of Kerala after the State faced severe hazards of flood in the month of August 2018. As a part of efforts to extend financial support the members of staff of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor, Nooranad, Alappuzha have donated Rs. 2,00,974/- to the Chief Minister’s Distress Fund. On 27th and 28th November 2018, SBCE organized Xplore’18, a technical exhibition by all departments to showcase the depth and wonders in various areas of engineering and was targeted to benefit students from various schools. The expo was open to visitors from 9.00 am – 4.00 pm, and over 2000 students from various CBSE & State Schools witnessed the technical exhibition. Main attraction of the exhibition was the working projects created by the students of the college. A still model of Mangalyaan which was made by using low cost materials was made and placed in the college. Moving robot, working dam, automatic railway gate indicator, moon landing display, gun expo, demo on Kerala flood, evolution of electronics, automobiles expo etc captured the attention of the visitors. The highlights of the expo included arms and ammunition display by “ITBP”, anatomy display by ‘Mount Zion medical college Virtual reality by FAB lab, Floating house and clock tower among others. A 3D printer named “JECKYL” created, assembled and implemented by S5 student of ECE, Mr. Justy John amazed everyone. A darkroom was created where three areas of world was included in one room along with interesting games. An eyecatching Drone show was also organized as part of the expo. Students from various schools and colleges arrived to see the exhibition. The works of the students were appreciated by the visitors.

UN DAY 2K18As part of the United Nations Day Celebration, the UNAI ASPIRE Students Chapter successfully conducted ‘UN DAY 2K18’ on 24 October 2018. The theme for this year was ‘Climate Action and Life on Land- the Sustainable Development Goals’. Prof. Athira Shaji, UNAI ASPIRE College Joint Coordinator welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. Pavitha P P (HoD, ECE) and Prof. Saritha N R (association coordinator, ECE). After the inauguration, a technical talk on “modern trends in mobile communication” was delivered by the chief guest. Mr. Justy John, student of 5th semester ECE demonstrated the low cost 3D printer designed and developed by himself. Kumar, Civil Surgeon, District Cancer Care Unit, Mavelikkara District Hospital was the keynote speaker for the event. Ms. Sruthi S of S7 ECE delivered the vote of thanks. Breast cancer affects 25.8 per 100,000 women in india (average). It is the leading cause of cancer in women. October being the breast cancer awareness month, a talk on ‘Breast Cancer – Diagnosis & Treatment’ was delivered by Dr. Suresh Kumar, Civil Surgeon, District Cancer Care Unit, Mavelikkara District Hospital. The talk also included awareness on self screening techniques and treatments for identification of various types of cancers. The second half of the event included a session by Dr. Nisha A R, Gynaecologist, Medical Mission Hospital, Tiruvalla, on cervical cancer awareness. The event was conducted at Conference Hall of Nooranad Grama Panchayath. The activity was organized for about 100 women of Nooranad Panchayath.

To educate youth about the negative effects of drug addiction, Department of Psychiatry, Josco College of Nursing and Department of Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering jointly organised a seminar on SAY NO TO DRUGS –an awareness programme on Monday, 6th August, 2018. Under PRABHODANA-“enlightenment through science” ,a programme jointly conducted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment and Sree Buddha college of Engineering, Pattoor, Nooranad. An invited talk on “Efface our e-waste” was organized on 19th September 2018 at Pope Pius higher secondary school, Kattanam. The programme was organized by KSCSTE, Department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor and Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd.. A one day talk was arranged for the students of class XI & XII of Pope Pius XI school, Kattanam, Kayamkulam. The programme was launched with the objective to evaluate and analyse the disposal behaviour and public perception/awareness on E-waste. There is an urgent need to streamline and sensitize young minds to the environmental problems and concerns. Students must have awareness about environmental problems so that they can play their role very effectively in proper waste management.

It is reported with pleasure that the Alumni Meet 2018 organised by the Department of Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering, SBCE Pattoor was conducted on 20th October 2018.20 Alumni from various batches from 2005 to 2013 were present for this meet. This meet was organised to give information about the current NBA accreditation process and important role of alumni in the accreditation process. ”MODELLING OF COMPLEX PROBLEMS IN ANSYS SOFTWARE”

The Department of Civil Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor organized a six day Faculty Development Programme on “ Modelling of complex problems in ANSYS Software” from 16th to 21st July 2018. Dr. E.K Bhass, Head of the department of Civil Engineering formally inaugurated the session. Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, Professor, Department of Civil, was the chief advisor of the programme. Ms Ritzy R, Assistant professor Department of Civil coordinated the workshop. ANSYS workshop was a highly demanding training program considering its application in Research and Development field. The resource persons were Dr.Akash Rajan, Vibration Analyst CEO, Tyrannus Innovative Engineering & Research Academy (TIERA) CET-TBI College of Engineering Trivandrum and Dr Nivin Philip, Associate Professor, Mar Baselios Christian College of Engineering & Technology, Idukki. The resource persons highlighted the following key areas: Introduction to ANSYS APDL and Workbench, Basics of FEA (focus on statics): Node numbering, Connectivity, Writing the first APDL code, Load Step Vs

Time Step, Non-linear analysis, Linear and Nonlinear buckling and Concrete modelling and crack studies. The workshop was highly beneficial to the researchers interested in exploring the capabilities of ANSYS software.

ONE DAY SEMINAR ON NECESSITY OF WATER PURIFICATION AND ITS

A successful water management program starts with a comprehensive strategic plan. In association with this program one day technical talk on “Solid Waste Management” was conducted by Mr. Subhash Varma, Professor Department of Architecture T.K.M College, Kollam on 1 October 2018 at conference hall. 120 participants attended the function. Dr. Gouri Antharjanam, HoD, Department of CE gave the welcome address on this occasion. In her address she expressed the importance of observing The World Habitat Day. And also, she notified her expectation in young engineers and pioneers for a better future. The function was presided over by Dr. S Suresh Babu, Principal SBCE. In his presidential address he expressed his concern over the increasing amount of wastes in urban and rural area. talk he told about the importance and the way of eradication of solid waste which has heightened in Kerala after flood. He mentioned that waste is not waste but it’s another resource if we manage it well. He also said that as an initiative step micro level solid waste management should start from our homes. The UN agenda of this year is for World Habitat Day 1 October 2018 is Municipal Solid Waste Management.

NATIONAL LEVEL WORKSHOP ON LATEX AND TECHNICAL WRITING

One-day national level symposium titled “Workshop on latex and technical writing” was organized by the Department of Computer science and Engineering (CSE) of Sree Buddha College of Engineering (SBCE) for the final

year UG Students on 28.09.2018. This workshop was conducted in association with ICFOSS off the job training scheme at the Systems Lab, Main Block of college building on 28.09.2018. The faculty of sessions was Prof. Gopu Darsan, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, SBCE. The event was officially inaugurated by Dr. S. V. Annlin Jeba, Head of Dept. of CSE by 8.30 a.m. and the contestant’s strength was forty-five (45) from the final year UG students of various departments of our institution. We received superior feedback about the event. The resource person gave immense information from introducing the FOSS technology to the UG students of SBCE. He discussed various advantages and possibility of Latex in technical writing. In the workshop he presented the methodology to overcome the difficulties faced during the report writing using MS Word and . expressed typical examples about IEEE journal writing and how the reference shall be added automatically to the Thesis report and Journal paper. He explaiined the basics of technical writing using Latex to enable the participants to create their own report during the hands-on training session and hence the workshop was a fruitful program in terms of knowledge sharing and created a platform for the students to work on FOSS technologies of Latex in technical writing.

One-day national level symposium titled “WORKSHOP ON LATEX” was organized by the Department of Computer science and Engineering (CSE) of Sree Buddha College of Engineering (SBCE) for the PG students on 3rd October 2018. This workshop was conducted in association with ICFOSS off the job training scheme at the Seminar Hall of CSE block on 3rd October 2018. The faculty of sessions was Prof. Gopu Darsan, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, SBCE. The programme started with registration and was officially inaugurated by the Principal Dr S Suresh Babu. The strength of participants was 56 who were enrolled as scholars for the PG program in

SBCE. The workshop came to an end with a valedictory function and certificate distribution.

UnderPRABHODANA-“Enl ightenment Through Science”, a programme jointly organized by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment and Sree Buddha college of engineering, under science popularization scheme a talk was conducted on “Digital Life” by Prof. Gopu Darsan, Department of CSE on 26th October 2018 at Govt. VHSS, Chunakkara. A technical talk was arranged to the students of class X of Govt. VHSS, Chunakkara. The objective of the program was to make the students aware about the recent technology improvements in day to day life. The programme started with a prayer. Dr. S. V. Annlin Jeba, HoD, Dept of CSE welcomed the students and staff of the school. After the inaugural function Prof. Gopu Darsan, Dept. MISSION RECONNECT

Students assembling and connecting emergency electrical connection boards

While efforts are going on to restore power supply in flood hit areas, the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor have joined “MISSION RECONNECT”, a task force launched by Kerala State Electricity Board (K S E B) for restoring power supply at domestic households of flood affected areas in association with K S E B. It is the students, faculty members and staff of the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering that came forward to be part of the initiative. The college team led by College Principal Dr. S Suresh Babu, department head Prof. Vinod V P and Mr. Vishnu J, Department Association Staff Secretary & UNAI - ASPIRE College Chapter Chairman have actively involved in reconnecting a minimum of 100 plus emergency electrical connection boards in affected houses on 31/08/2018 & 03/09/2018.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a one week Faculty Development Programme on “Advanced Energy Engineering and Technology” during 02-06 July 2018 at CSE seminar hall of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor. This FDP mainly covered the concepts of Recent Advances in Renewable Energy Technologies, Energy management, Energy Storage, application of Carbon Nanotubes in energy systems and Energy audit. The workshop started with an inaugural function in the morning on 2nd July 2018. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. A. Santhosh, CEO, Athul Energy Systems & Consultants, Thrissur. There were two sessions every day for four days as given in the Programme Schedule. The resource persons of various sessions were Mr. A. Santhosh (Athul Energy Systems & Consultants),

Eswaramoorthy (ACS College of Engineering, Bengaluru), Prof. Johnson Y (UKF College of Engineering and Technology, Kollam), Dr. Anu Nampoothiri (UKF College of Engineering and Technology, Kollam), Dr. M. S. Senthil Saravanan (Sree Buddha College of Engineering Pattoor), and Dr. Trijo Tharayil (Sree Buddha College of Engineering Pattoor). The participants included faculty members from various engineering institutes across India. There was an Industrial visit to NTPC, Kayamkulam on the last day. Individual feedback of participants was collected and participation certificates were issued on the last day. The workshop came to an end with a closing ceremony in the evening.

WORKSHOP ON GOOGLE SKETCHUP

The Institution of Engineers (India) students’ chapter of the Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted four day workshop on Google SketchUp for the third semester undergraduate students during 11 -16 October 2018. The workshop was conducted by Nexus Technical Solutions, Chengannur, Kerala under the aegis of the Institution of Engineers (India) Kollam Local Centre.

A five day programme on “Multi-skilled technician for technical staff was conducted from 23rd to 27th july 2018. In the inaugural function on the forenoon of 23rd july 2018, Sri S Sreekumar, Programme coordinator, welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by the Sri K K Sivadasan, treasurer, SBCE. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Club (IEDC) of Sree Buddha College if Engineering in association with PRAYAANA conducted a two day workshop on “women empowerment through Entrepreneurship” on 26th &27th July 2018 for selected 35 students. PRAYAANA is the first of its kind providing employability, entrepreneurship and innovation lab for women in Kerala, a social initiative of “4Tune Factory” foundation. Prayaana aims at the empowerment of girls and women after career break by providing internship / placement and further training and opportunity to work for various companies, when they are in their campus. ENTREPRENEURSHIP AWARENESS PROGRAMME FOR THE IEDC STUDENT

The Entrepreneurship development centre of Sree Buddha College of Engineering in association with District Industries Department conducted an awareness programme for the IEDC student members of the college on 18 September 2018 in Civil block Seminar Hall. The Programme started by 10.00 am with an inaugural session . The welcome speech was given by Mr. Gopu Darsan, IEDC coordinator, Sree Buddha College of Engineering. The

MEET THE ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAMME

The innovation and entrepreneurship development club of Sree Buddha College of Engineering conducted “MEET THE ENTREPRENEUR” programme for the student members of IEDC at the library block seminar hall on 7 November, 2018. The guest of the event was Ms. Geethu Sivakumar,CEO, Pace Hi-Tech Pvt Ltd.The objective of the event was to share the Entrepreneurial experience and also to motivate the students to think Out of Box. Many students interacted with the guest about the difficulties and procedures to follow to become an Entrepreneur.

INNOVATION-MOULDING YOUR DREAMS IN 3D“JEKYLL”- A low cost, High speed 3D printer

In the 21st century, where everything can be modelled and prototyped,3D printing technology has got its attention among young aspirants of Science and Engineering. With the different types of 3D printing models available, Department of Electronics and communication of Sree Buddha College of Engineering has developed a low cost 3D printer with high speed which is first of its kind. Mr.Justy John, student of III year is the master mind, who engineered and developed this low cost, high speed 3D printer.

Prize Winners of IBeTo Excel 2018

Siva Prasad S, Midhun M, Arun Thampy, Midhula M & Jayalekshmi J who are third semester students of Department of Electronics and communication of Sree Buddha College of Engineer-ing bagged second prize at IBeTo (Innovations for a Better Tomorrow) Excel 2018, held on 1st November 2018, organized by Govt. Model Engineering college Cochin, Kerala. IBeTo is a state level innovative project competition for bringing forward some of the most spectacular innova-tions that benefit society. The event was organized in phases viz. idea submission,1st phase report, design report, Presentation of the project and final implementation. The college and department appreciate the effort put forward by the students and congratulate them for their achievement.
