The five faces of Siva represent the five functions or acts (panchakrityas) – creation, sustenance, dissolution, concealing grace and revealing grace, respectively. The five faces of Siva also correspond to the five syllables in the holy mantra – na-mah-shi-vā-ya. Performing Maha Mritunjaya Homam with Pancha Mukha Mantras is considered very beneficial for peace, prosperity and general well-being. Devotees are encouraged to attend the Homam and Abhishekam and observe Jagarana (be awake) during night of Siva Ratri and to realize utmost benefits of this auspicious occasion.
