A Message from the Chief Executive Officer What an exciting month we have just had at the newly launched Sherwood Place! On September 16

th PresCare had the great pleasure of

celebrating Sherwood Respite Service’s 20th Birthday as

well as welcoming their team into the PresCare family during a handover ceremony on the day. I am pleased to reflect on a successful day filled with entertainment and recognition for all the hard work and care the team at SRS has contributed to the local aged community during the last two decades. I’d like to thank all those who took part in helping organise the day’s events, including Jan Kennedy, the Coordinator for Sherwood Respite Service as well as all our supporters and suppliers. I’d like to make special thanks to the Brisbane City Council, both the Browns Plains and Graceville Presbyterian Churches, the Camp Hill Masonic Lodge and Arch Auld for his generous donation of $800, The Contented Chef, Terry Blacker from 101FM, and Alan Kennedy for donating several items for the day. I would also like to acknowledge the attendance of Councillors and Local Members who spoke on the day to support the need for ongoing community care to help curb the risks of social isolation. These special guests included the Honorable Graham Perrett, the Federal Member for Moreton; the Honourable Scott Emerson, the Member for Indooroopilly; Councillor Nicole Johnston, Councillor for the Tennyson Ward; and Councillor Matthew Bourke, Chairman of the Lifestyle and Community Services Committee and Councillor for the Jamboree Ward. PresCare is thrilled to be able to build on the great work already done in helping the people within this community to be more involved with each other, finding greater enjoyment in their day-to-day life and creating memories to last a lifetime. Here’s to beginning another successful 20 years!

Greg Skelton - Chief Executive Officer

We are CLOSED on MONDAY 3rd

OCTOBER for the QUEEN’S

BIRTHDAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY.

Feel free to request to come to

Sherwood Place on another day, if

this is your day at Sherwood Place.

Spring 2016. It’s almost time to put away the Winter

woollies and prepare for another season. Life goes on

and so do all Carer’s.

Remember that National “Carer’s Week” is being held

between 16—22 October and there will be many activities,

recognising the HUGE contribution made by Carer’s to their

loved ones and to society in general.

Did you know?..... A Carer Support Group meets at the

Kenmore Library from 10am-12pm on the 1st Thursday of each

month.

If you have access to a computer, look up www.carersqld.asn.au

for further information about support and activities. If not, phone

the Carers Advisory Service on 1800 242636 between 9am and

5pm weekdays. Carers Queensland provides a variety of

programmes to support Carers. One such, is the no fee and

confidential National Carers Counselling Service, which helps to

address issues related to your caring role, such as Coping/Loss &

Grief/Problem solving techniques and provides emotional support

over up to 6 sessions to help you prevent “burning out”. You can

ask to be referred by your GP or phone 1800 242 636 for advice

and help.

DEMENTIA and your loved one: If the person that you care for

has dementia, you may be interested in a world first, 3 year

randomised controlled trial being conducted by Queensland’s

Griffith University’s Centre for Health Practice Innovation, which

is researching how dementia patients react to interactive

companion social robot animals. One of our own Carers has

been involved in this study and has furnished the information

for this newsletter. The cute and fluffy mechanical baby harp

seals have tactile sensors that react to pressure and the sound of

the human voice and movements. Measurements are taken to

record the effect upon the person’s engagement, mood states and

agitation. This study has already shown that people with

dementia instantly make a connection with this device and

demonstrate significant improvements in relationships, relaxation,

motivation and socialisation. This study involves over 400

residents in some 33 Nursing Homes on the Gold Coast.

Many Nursing Homes have resident live animals for the

enjoyment of their residents and we all recognise the positive

affect that pets have on peoples. This study takes the animal

interaction so much further. (My own dog is a welcome visitor at

a Nursing Home and gets a lot of affectionate attention from the

residents, however, their own dog is less enthusiastic about the

competition!) I look forward to seeing you all soon, Jane

FOCUS ON THE PERSON Sherwood Place believes that the independence of each individual should be supported and our support emphasises a focus on the person as a whole, recognises each individual’s strengths and abilities and aims to empower the individual to identify their own support goals. We apply the Age-friendly Principles and Practices to our work.

Assessment

The Assessment Agency and/or Coordinator are trained in assessment to promote independence by focusing on the individual’s strengths and assessing their:

Ability to maintain independence whilst staying connected within the community

Mobility and dexterity in activities of daily living

Ability to source and prepare food, thereby maintaining adequate nutrition and hydration

Social networks including family and community links.

Support Planning

Where appropriate, support focuses on sustaining or improving a person’s capacity to live independently. Support plans are developed using a wellness approach and focus on strategies to promote and foster service users’ independence. Detailed support plans are developed that ensure the strengths of service users are recognised and built on and not undermined through the delivery of support in areas where the service user can manage. Support planning may include sourcing services and supports, equipment and aids or fostering community connections depending on the program funding the support. A copy of the support plan is given to the service user to ensure:

The service user understands the supports provided

Areas where a service/support is not provided are clear to the service user

The service users role in the support process and in ensuring their independence and

To ensure all support workers deliver consistent support in accordance with the support plan.

Service User Information

Information on our focus on promoting and maintaining independence is included in the Service User Handbook and is explained to service users on assessment and reviews and any other time when services may need to be modified.

Staff Training

All staff and volunteers participate in training to foster independence and the use of documentation appropriate to their roles.

INCLUSION IN COMMUNITY Sherwood Place recognises that an important strategy in maintaining and developing independence is for service users to maintain their links in the community. To this end service users are encouraged to seek support (when required) from family, community groups and others and resources as appropriate to their circumstances and needs. Sherwood Placeassists service users in identifying resources, contacting them and accessing them. We also work with family members/representatives to identify and clarify their role in ongoing services. Sherwood Place maintains links with the local community.

MONITORING INDEPENDENCE PROCESSES Independence processes and systems are regularly audited as part of the Sherwood Place audit program and staff, service users and other stakeholders are encouraged to provide ongoing feedback on issues and areas where improvements can be made.

O C T OB E R -N O VE MBE R 2016 P AG E 5

Healthy and active ageing Being healthy, physically active and socially engaged throughout your life has many benefits, especially as you grow older. Some simple tips to help you to achieve healthy and active ageing include:

maintain a balanced diet. This is important for a healthy body and healthy brain do regular physical activity. This is essential for your body and mind. Regular physical activity builds muscle and helps to control weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, pain, as well as bone and joint problems such as osteoporosis and arthritis. It can also reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, some cancers, and help prevent falls and injury actively participate socially and engage with others. This contributes to your overall health and wellbeing by strengthening your sense of belonging and creating social relationships.

How do I maintain a balanced diet? To maintain a balanced diet, you should try to eat a variety of foods from different groups. This means trying to eat:

fruit and vegetables – two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day foods such as bread, cereal, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods, preferably wholegrain or wholemeal milk and dairy foods – use low fat milk and yoghurt and hard cheeses meat, fish, eggs, beans such as broadbeans, soybeans and lentils and other non-dairy sources of protein fish – at least two portions a week, including one portion of oily fish such as trout, salmon and sardines smaller amounts of food and drink that are high in fat or sugar. It is also essential to drink lots of water and other fluids in order to keep the body hydrated.

What types of physical activity should I do? It is important to remain active as you age. For active ageing you should try to do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most, preferably all, days to help keep your heart, lungs, muscles and bones working well. It’s a good idea to do a range of activities that help with fitness, strength, flexibility and balance.

What types of social activities should I do? Joining a local group or taking part in regular social activities with family, friends and neighbours is a good way to keep involved and connected with the community.

Can I still enjoy alcohol? Alcohol affects each individual in a different way, so there is no amount of alcohol that can be said to be safe for everyone. Always drink alcohol in moderation. If you choose to drink you should be aware that there is always some risk to your health and social wellbeing associated with drinking. To minimise this risk you should:

consult your doctor if you are taking certain medications (either prescription or over the counter), or have any physical or mental health problems that could be made worse by drinking alcohol. It may be especially important for older people to note that alcohol can affect your balance, drink no more than two standard drinks on any day.

Can I smoke? There is no healthy level of smoking, it harms people of all ages. Scientific evidence shows that if you smoke you face much higher risks of death and or illness from many different cancers, heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, emphysema and other respiratory diseases, pregnancy complications and many more conditions. Those who smoke are also less physically fit and have more breathing problems. Quitting at any age has benefits, with the largest reduction in risk in those who quit the earliest.

A TRIBUTE TO MY FATHER

My father was a giant when compared to me,

I was like a river, while he was the deep blue sea,

A brain that was quite outstanding, his concentration deep,

He studied as a hobby, no subject was too steep

At school he was a winner and scholarships ran free,

Then to the University to get his first degree.

But medicine was his final goal so to Sydney is where he went,

To realise his ambition and become the doctor heaven sent.

Then he went to Proserpine, he didn't like the cold,

And while he practiced medicine he also mined for gold.

But the gold soon ran out so politics he tried,

Then he went back to studying until the day he died.

He was a saint, he was a sinner, a man amongst all men,

He found it difficult to show his children love, but, did it now and then,

He was gifted as a speaker and his speeches very good,

And he believed in the Catholic Faith as he was told he should.

Of course I loved him dearly and tried to tell him so,

But always found it difficult as we both were “on the go”

I did not see him very much after I was wed,

And I was left with these regrets after he was dead.

Now let this be a lesson to every one of you,

Show your love for family in everything you do,

Give your family all the love that they can ever get,

And you can have a peaceful life without this one regret.

VOLLIE VIBE

Welcome to everyone. I am pleased to say I am glad the winter has gone to sleep for another 6 months and the warmer months are coming fast. The mornings are just glorious at the moment and a good time to sit in the morning sun reading the paper and having a quiet cuppa while you take in the wonderful sunshine. I would like to say big thank you to the volunteers who helped out on our 20th birthday celebrations. The celebration was a wonderful success. The staff would like to say a big thank you to Lorraine Simpson for nearly 20 years and George Bogoyevitch for 16 years of service. What would we do without them. If anyone knows of someone who would like to come and volunteer some of their time to help out please contact me at SRS on 33791051. Thank you to all, From Robyn Volunteer Coordinator

JOKE CORNER

The class teacher asks students to name an animal that begins with the letter “E”.

One boy says, “Elephant”.

Then the teacher asks for an animal that begins with the letter “T”.

The same boy answers, “Two Elephants”

The teacher sends the boy out of the class for bad behaviour. After that she asks

for an animal beginning with the letter “M”.

The boy shouts from the other side of the wall: “Maybe an Elephant”

WRONG EMAIL ADDRESS:

A couple were going on holiday but the wife was on a business trip so the husband

went to the destination first and his wife was meeting him the next day.

When he reached the hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick email.

UNFORTUNATELY, when typing her email address, he mistyped a letter and his

note was sent instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had just recently

passed away.

When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the screen, let

out a piercing scream and fell to the floor in a dead faint.

At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw the email on the screen:

“Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival

tomorrow. P.s. Sure is hot down here!”

VOLUNTEER

PROFILE The Volunteer Profile for this Newsletter is:

JANE HALL. How long have you volunteered at SRS?

I started in July 2013.

I decided to become a volunteer when invited to do

so by ex-SRS President, John Cridland. Mum had

been attending SRS twice a week and I appreciated

how important Day Respite was for both her and

myself. I had been a full time Carer for a couple of years by then and I valued the hours of

respite to catch my breath and to do the ordinary things that I had taken for granted previously.

I joined the Management Committee in September 2013 as I could represent Carers and had a

background in Nursing. “Carer’s Corner” was incorporated into the bi-monthly newsletter soon

afterwards and I have been collaborating with Lenore (ex-Social Worker) to focus on news and,

hopefully, helpful advice for Carers since then. I stepped down, with all the other committee

members, when the M/C was taken over by the representatives from PresCare, pending their full

take over in September 2016. I have continued my association with SRS as a volunteer since

then.

My life and background:

Very briefly, I became an RN and Midwife in London UK and went on to become a Health

Visitor, specialising in babies and young children in transition from Hospital to Home. Now I am

involved with the opposite end of the spectrum, trying to help keep our senior population at home

for as long as is possible. I have enjoyed a long and successful career as a Medical Sales

Manager here in Australia, and travelled extensively with my work. A career highlight was in

2006 when I represented Australia & New Zealand in a Global Sales Achiever Award Ceremony

in Denmark. I retired from full time employment in 2011 to care for Mum at home. Mum was

finally admitted into Residential Care in June 2015 when it became impossible for me to manage

her needs at home. It was a very distressing time for both of us and I was grateful for the help

and support of an understanding GP and wonderful friends who helped us to cope with the reality

of our situation.

My greatest talent or Interest?

Mum is still the regular & main focus of my existence but I enjoy gardening, cooking, reading

and going to Theatre/Concerts etc. I have started providing short term “Homestay” for

International students, which is a great distraction and gets me out and about showing off our

lovely City and surrounds. If I had to choose my greatest interest, it would be my Mum, closely

followed by making the most of each day and keeping in contact with good friends.

Thank you Jane, for your continued volunteering at Sherwood Place, it is greatly

appreciated.
