Runner Sewing Instructions1. Place (1) 3 ⅞” Fabric D square on top of (1) 3 ⅞” Fabric C square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square (Fig. 1). Sew ¼” away from each side of the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 1). Cut the (2) squares apart on the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 2) to make (2) half-square triangles. Trim the blocks to measure 3 ½” to make (2) Unit 1 blocks (Fig. 3). Repeat to make (8) Unit 1 blocks total.

2. Repeat Step 1 using (8) 3 ⅞” Fabric D squares and (8) 3 ⅞” Fabric B squares to make (16) Unit 2 blocks (Fig. 4).

3. Sew (2) Unit 2 blocks together with the Fabric B sides touching to make (1) Unit 3 strip (Fig. 5). Repeat to make (8) Unit 3 strips total.

4. Sew (1) Unit 3 strip to each side of (1) 6 ½” Fabric A square. Sew (1) Unit 1 block to each end of (1) Unit 3 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric A strip to make (1) Block One square. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks and strips. Repeat to make a second Block One square.

Runner Top Assembly (Refer to Figure 12 while assembling runner top.)9. Sew (1) Block One square to each side of (1) Block Two square to make the Center Block.

10. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric H strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 38 ½” Fabric H strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block.

11. Center (1) 6” x 29” Fabric I strip on (1) side of the Center Block and pin in place. Start sewing the strip a ¼” from the top edge of the block and stop a ¼” from the bottom edge. DO NOT TRIM THE EXCESS. Repeat with the opposite side.

12. Repeat Step 11 to sew (1) 6” x 53” Fabric I strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block, making sure to stop and start ¼” away from each end of the block. To miter each corner, fold the Center Block on a diagonal, wrong side together. This should line up the strips from adjacent sides (Fig. 11).

5. Repeat Step 1 using (2) 3 ⅞” Fabric D squares and (2) 3 ⅞” Fabric G squares to make (4) Unit 4 blocks (Fig. 7).

6. Repeat Step 1 using (4) 3 ⅞” Fabric D squares and (4) 3 ⅞” Fabric F squares to make (8) Unit 5 blocks (Fig. 8).

7. Sew (2) Unit 5 blocks together with the Fabric F sides touching to make (1) Unit 6 strip (Fig. 9). Repeat to make (4) Unit 6 strips total.

8. Sew (1) Unit 6 strip to each side of (1) 6 ½” Fabric E square. Sew (1) Unit 4 block to each end of (1) Unit 6 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric E strip to make (1) Block Two square. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks and strips.

13. Starting at the sewn seam (represented by the arrow in Figure 11), draw a 45-degree line to the edge of the fabric. Sew on the drawn line. Trim the excess fabric leaving a ¼” seam. Repeat this step with the remaining corners to make the runner top.

14. Layer and quilt as desired.

15. Sew the (4) 2 ½” x WOF Fabric H strips together, end to end with 45-degree seams, to make the binding. Fold this long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.

16. Bind as desired.

Place Mat Sewing Instructions17. Place (1) 3 ⅞” Fabric D square on top of (1) 3 ⅞” Fabric C square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square (Fig. 13). 19. Sew (2) Unit 8 blocks together with the Fabric B sides touching to make (1) Unit 9 strip (Fig. 17). Repeat to make (8) Unit 9 strips total.

20. Sew (1) Unit 9 strip to each side of (1) 6 ½” Fabric A square. Sew (1) Unit 7 block to each end of (1) Unit 9 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric A strip to make (1) Block Three square. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks and strips. Repeat to make a second Block One square.

Place Mat Top Assembly (Refer to Figures 23 & 24 while assembling place mat tops.)25. Sew (1) 4” x 12 ½” Fabric E strip to each side of (1) Block 3 square to make the Center Block.

26. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 19 ½” Fabric F strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block to make (1) Place Mat One. Repeat to make a second Place Mat One.

27. Sew (1) 4” x 12 ½” Fabric E strip to each side of (1) Block 4 square to make the Center Block.

28. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 19 ½” Fabric F strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block to make (1) Place Mat Two. Repeat to make a second Place Mat Two.

29. Layer and quilt as desired.

30. Sew the (8) 2 ½” x WOF Fabric F strips together, end to end with 45-degree seams, to make the binding. Fold this long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press. Divide the long strip into (4) equal lengths.

22. Repeat Step 17 using (8) 3 ⅞” Fabric D squares and (8) 3 ⅞” Fabric H squares to make (16) Unit 11 blocks (Fig. 20).

23. Sew (2) Unit 11 blocks together with the Fabric H sides touching to make (1) Unit 12 strip (Fig. 21). Repeat to make (8) Unit 12 strips total.

24. Sew (1) Unit 12 strip to each side of (1) 6 ½” Fabric G square. Sew (1) Unit 10 block to each end of (1) Unit 12 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric G strip to make (1) Block Four square. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks and strips. Repeat to make a second Block Four square.
