PM Narendra Modi showers praises on Sharad Pawar Mumbai Prime Minister Narendra Modi who lashed out at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar six months ago?showered praises on Pawar on Saturday, claiming that even if they are from two different parties and have two different ideologies, their aim is one—India’s progress. Modi was speaking in Baramati, hometown of Pawar around 110km south of Pune after inaugurating agricultural technology centre on Saturday. Barely six months ago in Baramati, while addressing a campaign rally for the 15 October assembly polls in Maharashtra, Modi had asked voters to overthrow the regime of the uncle- nephew duo (referring to Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar, former deputy chief minister of the state) from Baramati. He had also called the NCP a naturally corrupt party. The Barmati assembly seat is being represented by member of the Pawar family since 1967 and the Lok Sabha seat since 1991. Currently Ajit Pawar represents the Baramati assembly segment while the Lok Sabha seat is represented by Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar’s daughter. Praising Pawar, Modi said, “I keep talking with Pawar at least twice or thrice a month and we exchange notes on various issues faced by the country. AICC General Secretary Ajay Maken told reporters that instead of taking steps on a war footing to check the outbreak, government has slashed the budget of the Health ministry by Rs 6,000 crore. He claimed that there was paucity of vaccination and tablets for the treatment of the flu even in the national capital and protective gear for the doctors and nurses were hardly available. Claiming that there were no testing laboratories in government hospitals, he said that patients are being charged in the range of Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000 for the tests in private facilities. Maken also accused the government of failing to launch an awareness drive through the media to make people aware about the ‘dos and don’ts’. He lamented that this was happening at a time when there have been full page advertisements in newspapers “to promote personalities”. Latest reports say the death toll has risen to 485 with maximum number of casualties reported from Rajasthan and Gujarat. Maken also announced a free vaccination camp for AICC reporters from tomorrow. rime Minister Narendra Modi is believed to have been briefed by Health Minister J P Nadda today on the spurt of swine flu cases in the country after the the number of casualties due to the disease touched 485. Although, there was no official word about what transpired in the meeting, sources said Nadda met Modi right after the Union Cabinet meeting in the morning at South Block to update and brief him about the swine flu situation. “There was an appointment of the Health Minister with the Prime Minister right after the Cabinet,” a source in the Health Ministry said. The meeting comes after 6,298 cases have been reported all over the country from January 1 to February 12 which has claimed the lives of 485 people. Gujarat has recorded the second highest number of deaths due to swine flu after Rajasthan. In Gujarat, 117 people have died of swine flu with the state reporting 1,233 cases while Rajasthan has seen the maximum 130 deaths with 1,631 cases. Aadmi Party (AAP) in the national arena. The position would be as an alternative to the BJP in the “secular” space. Among the words we saw him use frequently were “ahankar” (arrogance or ego) and various synonyms for god – “Ishwar, Bhagwan and Khudrat”. Both have enormous significance. The “ahankar” he was talking about was what brought him down in the Lok Sabha elections, and the same “ahankar” was what got the BJP and Narendra Modi badly burnt in the recent Delhil elections. Kejriwal’s references to “ahankar” were a tacit realisation that the unexpectedly large mandate given to him was as much the result of the BJP’s gross mistakes as the AAP’s own positive programmes. He knows that the public can as soon turn against him – as it did in the Lok Sabha elections – as it turned against BJP this time. He knows that getting 67/70 seats in the assembly is no guarantee that the public will always be with him. His references to “Ishwar”, “Bhagwan” and “Kudrati karishma” is yet another acknowledgement that while AAP worked really hard for this victory, it could not have made such a huge splash without luck playing its part. It is also his way of saying “touch wood.” In India’s history, parties which received extraordinary mandates have always been in trouble two years later. Cases in point: Indira Gandhi after her 1971 victory, the Janata party after its 1977 mandate, and Rajiv Gandhi after his 1984 sweep. Modi’s mandate in 2014, in contrast, is smaller than all of them, and especially in comparison to Kejriwal’s this month. well as Amreli district, a release issued by the state government said here. 159 fresh cases of swine flu were recorded across the state, taking the total number to 1,392 cases, it said. Besides following standard procedures of treatment, the Gujarat state government has also begun distribution of ayurvedic and homoeopathic medicines to increase immunity against swine flu. According to a release, more than 1.60 lakh people have been given these medicines across the state. Voicing concern over rising cases of swine flu in

The mysterious Rs2 crore ($323,000) that the Aam AadmiParty (AAP) received in donations last year has triggereda frenzied search for answers. Where did this moneycome from and how could a party founded on principlesof economic transparency accept this cash? For now, the issue has become a game of news cycles. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress aretrying their best to ensure that the focus stays on themoney trail for as long as possible. Meanwhile, the AAPhas attempted to distance itself from the recipients andwants to deflect the argument to a case of the pot callingthe kettle black. In the heat of the Delhi elections, no one is debating thedirty secret of Indian elections: Political funding—or tobe more specific, disclosure of interest. Till now therelationship between money and politics has been similarto that between an alcoholic and his bottle. Public in denialbut impossible to live without. The fantastic amounts ofmoney required to fight a competitive campaign make itimportant for everyone to know where the money iscoming from. Historically, parties were financed bycontributions from friends, family and supporters orphilanthropic grants. While corporate donations werelegal, The Representation of the People’s Act (pdf) in1951 created limits on how much could be spent by acandidate. It was only in 1968 that corporate donationsto political parties were banned. While the officialresponse explained that it was to prevent black money inpolitics and from corporate funding subverting commoninterests, the popular view has been that the move wasto block the rise of C Rajagopalachari’s Swatantra Partyand its right-wing economic agenda. To promotetransparency in funding, in 1979, political parties werepermitted to claim exemptions from income and wealthtaxes, as long as they filed returns listing donations ofRs10,000 and above, along with disclosing the identityof the donors. But tax exemption was not a significantenough incentive to disclose funding. In 1985, the Companies Act once again allowedcorporates to fund political parties, subject to disclosurein accounts and donation not exceeding 5% of the averagenet profit for the last five years. To bolster disclosure ofdonations, corporate funders were given income taxexemptions. However, there is a greater interest inmaintaining funding anonymity rather than taking advantageof tax exemptions. In a fragmented political landscape, entities may not want to be associated with any one party. Moreover, the sources of funds are often illegitimate. This has created a vicious cycle of political funding:Funding received through numerous small valuedonations—or in some cases, the funds being providedto numerous associated entities that remain off the booksof the political parties. For example, the Bahujan SamajParty has never had any funding above Rs20,000. Nearly90% of the Congress’ income and 75% of the BJP arethrough donations below the disclosure limit—andtherefore not accounted for. And some industries, especially construction, have shown a high correlation toelectoral periods. A 2011 study of cement usage in Indiashowed that “cement consumption does exhibit a politicalbusiness cycle,” corroborating the quid pro quorelationship between the industry and politicians.

World Cup 2015: Pakistan will be under 'pressure'in opener against India, says Rohit Sharma

Raising temperatures aheadof the much awaited India-Pakistan Cricket WorldCup opener, Indian cricketteam opener Rohit Sharmahas insisted that the pressurewould be on Pakistan ratherthan them in their opening

match on Sunday inAdelaide. Pakistan wouldattempt to break theirWorld Cup drought againstreining champions India intheir tournament opener onSunday. But Sharma feelsthat the heat is on their arch-

rivals Pakistan. Sharma saidthat they know what theyhave to do to be at theirbest, insisting that thepressure would be onPakistan. He claimed thatPakistan are the ones whohave not won a gameagainst India in the WorldCup, insisting that his sidewould try and use it to theiradvantage, News.com.aureported. However,Pakistan have won the 1992World Cup in Australia.India lost 2-1 at home toPakistan two years ago andby one wicket in their Asiaclash showdown at Dhakalast March where Rohitcontributed a half-century.However, India crushedPakistan by eight wickets intheir rain affected ChampionsTrophy meeting in June 2013,the report added.

Cricket World Cup: Finch, Marshdominate as Australia thrash England

Australia's phenomenalperformance in their firstmatch in the World Cupunderlined why so manyexpect them to be returningto the MCG in six weeks'time to duel for the trophy. They showed grit to steadyfrom a precarious 3-70, flairto surge to 9-342 from their50 overs, and then utterruthlessness with the balland in the field to leaveEngland reeling at 6-92,including the wicket of losingcaptain Eoin Morgan for a

third consecutive duckversus Australia, to thedelight of the vast majorityof the crowd of 84,336.From that point, the 22ndover, England's only realisticincentive was survival, tolimit the net run-rate damagewith which they will besaddled. Most plaudits withthe bat were owing to AaronFinch, whose 135 wasespecially galling forEngland because he wasdropped on zero by ChrisWoakes. Finch and George

Bailey (55 off 69) gotAustralia back on track witha stand of 146. Even thoughboth departed by the 39thover, they had ensuredAustralia had sufficient. New Zealand conditions suit Indiamore than Australia: Amarnath

Former India cricketerMohinder Amarnathbelieves that conditions inNew Zealand will suit Indianbatsmen better than those inAustralia at the 2015 WorldCup which starts onSaturday. "The conditions inNew Zealand will provideIndian batsmen moreopportunity and options. Itwill suit their style becauseNew Zealand wickets -though they may seem so -are not as quick asAustralian wickets. Plus

smaller grounds will comehandy for Indian batsmen,"Amarnath, who was part ofthe 1983 World Cup-winning India squad, toldIANS in an interview. Indiaplay their first four WorldCup league fixtures inAustralia, after which theytravel to New Zealand toplay two matches againstminnows Ireland andZimbabwe March 10 and14, respectively. Amarnath, who is famously known forclinching the World Cup-

winning wicket in the 1983final against the West Indies, said one of the reasons forIndia's failure in Australia hasbeen the inability of thebatsmen to adjust to theconditions DownUnder."The way Indianplayers bat against quickbowlers, specially inAustralia, they have notbeen able to adjust to thepace and bounce. Probablythey are trying to play toomany shots which they havenot been able to playsuccessfully because of theirstyle, balance andtechnique," said the 64-year-old, who was Man-of-the-Series at the 1983World Cup.India have beenin Australia for more thantwo-and-a-half monthsduring which they lost thefour-match Test series 0-2,lost all games and failed tomake the final of the One-DayInternational (ODI) tri-seriesagainst Australia andEngland. More recently, theywere once again hammeredby Australia in a World Cupwarm-up fixture by 106 runs.

Indian bowling won’t lack bite due toIshant’s absence: Sourav Ganguly

Former India captainSourav Ganguly does notthink Indian bowling wouldlack any bite in absence ofsenior-most speedsterIshant Sharma who hasbeen ruled out of theCricket World Cupbecause of a knee injury.“One player’s absencewon’t make much of adifference. The rest will alsohave to bowl well,” said thec r i c k e t e r - t u r n e d -commentator in Kolkata, before flying to Australia forthe ICC World Cupcommencing on Saturday.Ishant apparently sustainedthe injury during the BoxingDay Test and went on to

miss the final Test of the five-match series that India lost0-2. The bowlingdepartment has come in fora lot of flak in the difficultbuild up to the World Cupand Indian ace seamerBhuvneshwar Kumar alsoappears to be carryingsome niggle in his ankle.Citing example of Aussieskipper Michael Clarke, the41-year-old cricketer saidunlike a batsman it’s difficult

for a bowler to come backin shape quickly. “I don’tthink Ishant hid his injury. When a player gets injured, you give him time to recover.Michael Clarke hasrecovered. He (Clarke)could recover because he’sa batsman. He might nothave, if he was a bowler. There’s a differencebetween a batsman andbowler,” said Ganguly.Batting too is yet to click asa whole, something thatbecame apparent in the Tri-series with Australia andEngland that followed theTest series as India lost threeconsecutive matches in thebuild-up to the mega event.
