Second Reading — To the Israelites belong the covenants, the law, and the patriarchs; and from them comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5). Gospel — As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples were terrified (Matthew 14:22-33).

THE PRESENCE OF GOD After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic mira-cle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest chal-lenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

August 9: SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942)

“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemna on of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-prac cing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one si ng, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Bap zed on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ ini a on into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presenta on in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecu on of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church.

End of the Summer Scramble! The pandemic has caused the school to move up its timetable on some renovations and it has required that quite a number of other measures be taken like sanitizing equipment, temperature check tablets, and technology upgrades. All of this in addition to the regular preparations. We have great people working but keeping up with the demand in the timetable we have is overwhelming. After consulting with the school board and the staff, the first day of school will be Monday, August 24. It will begin at the normal time with a 12:00 noon dismissal. Tuesday, August 25 will be a “regular” school day. This is to make sure that we can start school as smoothly as possible, complete the room renovations and rearrantments, finish the window replacements, and permit teachers to be really prepared. Back To School Night: We will not have all of the “Back to School” activities that we normally do. We are developing plans to make sure students can get their materials to school before the first day so stay tuned for those details. New Family Welcoming: There will be activities for our new families and new students to welcome them to the SSPP family. There will be invitations sent out but we are delaying the date to give a chance for more work to be completed and teachers to be ready. New Student Information System: All schools in the Diocese of Jefferson City will be using a common student information system. Some schools implemented the new system last school year. SSPP chose to wait a year until this upcoming school year. When it is “live,” login information will be distributed.

Formed Pick of the Week: Life for Life: Maximilian Kolbe Auschwitz, 1941. One of the prisoners, Jan, escapes from the German concentra on camp while working at a gravel pit. Thanks to the help of kind-hearted people, he finds shelter. There Jan hears tragic news about ten random inmates sentenced by the Nazis to death by starva on as a punishment for his escape. One among the convicts is Fr. Maximillian Kolbe, a Franciscan priest who volunteered to die in place of one of the inmates. Now Jan is not just fleeing the Nazis, but also from his guilt for his involvement in Kolbe's death. He goes to visit Niepokalanów, a very large Franciscan monastery, where Fr. Kolbe had been the founder and superior. There Jan wants to learn what were the mo ves behind his decision to die for another prisoner, a complete stranger. Though free from Auschwitz, Jan will con nue to be confronted by the life and death of Maximilian Kolbe wherever he goes. In addi on to Jan—torn between wan ng to forget and a fascina on with Kolbe—another key character emerges, Brother Anselm. He is a devout young Franciscan priest who quietly but strongly witnesses to Kolbe's heroic faith and love, and then rejoices at the bea fica on of Kolbe by Pope Paul VI. Later Kolbe will be canonized by his fellow countryman, Pope St. John Paul II, who proclaimed Kolbe as the “patron saint of the difficult 20th century.” You can watch with our free parish subscrip on by simply selec ng our parish’s name during registra on at formed.org/signup.
