PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents, Welcome back to what will be a very exciting term of learning for our students! The teachers have been working very hard to ensure that our curriculum is being tailored to our learners needs, and at their point of need! Learning Portfolios prepared by the specialist teachers, will be sent home with your child this Friday. Curriculum Newsletters (that outline the curriculum being taught for term 3) will also be sent home this Friday. Grandparents Day Visit to School and Mass (or Special Person) By now your child will have bought home an invitation for their Grandparents to attend our Grandparents Day which will take place next Friday 27th July from 10am. This is a very exciting opportunity for our loved ones to join us at school and see all the wonderful things that they are learning about. And of course, this year we are hoping to learn a lot from our grandparents about history…! If you do not have a grandparent available please feel free to bring along a special person - neighbour, family friend, uncle or aunt. The reason that we are celebrating Grandparents Day next Friday is that it is the Feast of St Anne and St Joachim. They were the parents of Mary, and therefore grandparents of Jesus. The format of the day will be as follows: 10am Grandparents arrive to the school office and meet their grandchild/children 10.45am Grandparents will be escorted down to the Narthex of the Church for refreshments, while the children have recess 11.20am the children will line up and begin moving into the Church to sit with either their Grandparents or class teacher Mass will finish at approx 12.30pm. Children will farewell their Grandparent at the Church and return to class. We do hope that many Grandparents will be able to join us, and that some of our parents will be available to assist with serving / providing refreshments in the Narthex from 10.45am. Term 3 Chess Club This term we will again enjoy a visit from Leonid Sandler, Chess Extraordinaire! He will be at school next Thursday 26th July working with each of the grades. This will launch our Chess Club for term 3, which was a fabulous success last year! Chess Club will be held in rm 10 each Friday during lunchtime, and every second Friday Seniors from Manningham will join us for some friendly matches. We are lucky to have their ongoing interest in wanting to come along and play Chess with us. Chess Club was an initiative of the Community Engagement Group in 2017 and will continue to be supported by the CEG team this year also. If you would like to be involved, please let me know via email. The Chess Club is going to be supported by teachers, however if any parent/s or grandparents would like to attend any of these Chess Club meetings, your assistance would be appreciated. The main role of any helpers is to assist with setting up, pair up the attendees and then assist with packing up. Approximately 1 hour of your time would be needed. You can volunteer for one meeting or multiple. Please do not hesitate to leave your name at the school office if you are interested. Welcome Back Morning Tea Will be held in the Staffroom this Thursday at school drop off time. Come along for a cuppa and a chat - siblings welcome! This is a very informal opportunity to come along and meet some new people and reconnect with others. All welcome!

SCHOOL NEWS Reminder - Allergies A reminder to all parents that we have a number of children who have severe and life threatening allergy to some nuts and seeds - including NUTELLA. While it is very difficult to create a nut free zone, we are asking parents to think carefully about the types of foods that they place in their child’s lunches. Please refrain from sending to school peanut butter, Nutella and muesli type bars and homemade slices etc with nuts or sesame seeds. Products labelled as ‘may have traces of nuts’ are fine. I would also ask that your children wash their hands between eating and coming to school. Religious Education Conference Tomorrow and Friday Mr Lynch and myself will be attending the Catholic Education Melbourne - Religious Education Conference. We will however be in attendance at the Year 6 Confirmation Faith Night starting at 7pm in the school library this Thursday 19th July. Children and a parent are expected to attend. 2017 Annual Report to the Community The 2017 Annual Report to the community in now available on our school website and hard copies are available in the school office. I look forward to the term ahead as we as a school community continue to build in strength, trust and faith together, Anita Kelliher

Enrolments are now being accepted for Prep students looking to begin at Ss Peter and Paul’s in 2020. Please let friends, neighbours, kinder friends etc. know that we are now taking enrolment forms. If you have a sibling starting in 2020, please let us know also. Enrolment forms can be obtained by contacting the Office, or by downloading from our website under the ‘Enrolment Information’ tab. Our school Open Day will be held in term 1, 2019, and school tours continue to be arranged by appointment throughout the year, via

contacting the Office. Sustainability Project with Manningham Council We are currently liaising with Manningham Council to evaluate our Intergenerational ‘Growing Together’ gardening program. While the program is not under any threat of not continuing, it is prudent to reflect on the success and challenges of the program and ways to improve it to ensure that the program is meeting the needs of both the school and the Council. Children from Yr 2 - 6 will be asked over the coming days to complete a Google Form (survey) that outlines a number of questions about the gardening program and sustainability generally. This will be de-identified information that we will use in combination with feedback from the Senior Gardeners and school staff to make recommendations. If you do not wish for your child to complete a short 10 minute (deidentified) survey please let your class teacher know.

SCHOOL NEWS

EXTRA CURRICULAR NEWS Division Soccer Our Open Soccer Team has participated in this exciting event TODAY at Mirrabooka Reserve, Blackburn South. Thank you to our coach Con Rangas and to all the parents who have helped with soccer boots, shin guards and transport arrangements. A wonderful team effort! Stay tuned for a full report next week! Basketball Program All students will be participating in the Aussie Hoops Basketball program on Fridays during Term Three (Week 1, then Weeks 3-9). We welcome our coach Thadd Varmall from Basketball Victoria for these sessions and are grateful for the Sporting Schools grant which has allowed our school to access this program. All students will be required to wear sport uniform on Fridays this term. If your child has their own basketball, please send it with them to school on Fridays for use during the clinics. Thank you! Many thanks, Helen Kalac and Stephanie D’Astoli - Ss Peter & Paul’s Sport

School Crossing Closure - Blackburn Road Please note the Manningham Council has closed the school crossing on Blackburn Road (just past the Beverley Street cross over point). If your child needs to cross over this very busy and dangerous road they now need to walk up to the traffic lights at corner of Blackburn Road and Doncaster Road.

FROM THE RE DESK Mark 6:7-13 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.

These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

Reflections: 1. What do we take when going on a journey? 2. Do we welcome strangers along with friends into your house? 3. How do we react to our children when they do not listen to us? Do we stop and think before reacting? 4. Are we role models for our children?
