Project Manager,

The Situation Asian Paints sought to upgrade its current

SAP platform from R/3 4.7 to ECC 6.0. Asian Paints was using a version of SAPthat was nearing the end of its life cycle.

An upgrade to a newer SAP release wasnecessary if Asian Paints was to remainfully supported. The enhancement would

help align the company with its futurebusiness needs and save on maintenancecosts. Capgemini was selected to be the

delivery partner.

The SolutionIn addition to the technical upgrade, thescope of the project included applying all

required patches for the upgrade, retrofitting all custom developments, validating the upgrade, providing effective

support during user acceptance test andgo-live phases as well as the two-weekpost-implementation

phase. The

project plan for the upgrade was based ona comprehensive checklist that includedsystem and application landscapes,

retrofitting strategy, test scripts and timeschedule.

The ResultThanks to meticulous planning, allsystems were delivered ahead of schedule.

With the system installed, Asian Paints cannow leverage the functionality offered by

the latest SAP release. A single go-live wasexecuted by the team to ensure minimumdowntime and to maximize theopportunity for quick wins. By carefully

How Asian Paints andCapgemini Worked Together

Capgemini and Asian Paints worked jointly to come up with the followingobjectives for the project:

• provide the user community with astate-of-the-art IT solution for

functional areas within agreed timelinesand at competitive cost

• enable the IT organization to deliver

several projects in parallel without theneed for increased internal resources ortime

• create a robust and flexible platform to

cope with future integration needs

• benefit from the latest technologiesavailable from SAP.

The project presented several key

challenges to any implementation partner. Most importantly, there was no room forfailure. As Asian Paints enjoys an enviable

reputation as a trend setter in the domainof information technology, impeccabledelivery was the only option. The

company was also on a very tight timeline, one that required that downtime be keptto an absolute minimum.

Management at Asian Paints recognizedthat working with a partner on the

upgrade would add value and a freshperspective. Asian Paints carried out theirassessment taking both the hard facts and

the softer aspects into consideration andeventually visited the Capgemini facilitiesto talk to the team who would be

managing the project. The Asian Paintstechnical team liked the collaborative

approach that Capgemini espoused andsensed that there was a good culturalmatch between the two companies. These

attributes, plus strong delivery credentialson SAP projects on both a global and alocal level, were exactly what Asian Paints

was looking for in a partner.

The project team, consisting of persons

from both companies, developed ameticulous and detailed plan for theupgrade. Each step was fully identified,
