SS2000
Club Contacts: With 4 rounds down, Ant Te
Rito still remains at the top of
the championship points table,
despite a less than dominant
performance at Manfeild.
This was partly due to Brett
Killip and Graeme Smyth, both
having good runs in all 3 races
over this weekend in their
Mazdas, with Killip winning the
round overall and Smyth the
runner up.
Qualifying at 4th on slightly
older tyres, netted Te Rito a
3rd placing in the scratch
race. Then on Day 2 the Civic
driver bolted on a set of
“green slicks” and although he
crossed the line victorious in
the 8 lap handicap race, he
eclipsed his fastest lap time
twice. Once the time penalties
were
applied,
this
dropped
Te Rito
down to
5th and
allowed
Smyth
to close
the
champi-
onship
points
gap somewhat. In the final 10
lap handicap race, Te Rito did
manage some redemption
though and finished ahead of
both Killip and Smyth with a
2nd placing.
Whilst tactically you could
argue that Te Rito didn’t quite
get it 100% right for round 4,
Te Rito still at Top Tactically (?)
In case you had all forgotten,
by competing and finishing in
the 10 lap handicap races over
all 6 Rounds, if you are the
highest accumulative points
scorer, you can win a Racetech
race seat kindly donated by
Racetech NZ.
Having said this, there are a
number of our top competitors
already using Racetech seats
in their cars, testament of their
quality and popularity amongst
competitors.
After 4 rounds, Ant Te Rito
leads the tally on 130 points,
with both Brent Thompson and
Ross Gordon next equal on
118 points. With up to 40
points available, there is still a
chance for a few others as
well.
Whilst the devastating fire last
Racing for Racetech!! year destroyed their
factory, Racetech NZ
will soon be operating
out of their new factory
and showroom prem-
ises, still located in the
Petone-Lower Hutt
area.
So where you can
please repay their gen-
erosity by supporting
them and helping them
rebuild their business.

Hi everyone,
I decided at Manfeild I would resume the role of President for the remainder of
the season. I need to make special mention of Brent Thompson who filled in for
the President’s role for me while myself and my family came to terms with Dad’s
passing. It’s still strange going racing without Dad, but I know he would want me
to carry on. So Brent, thanks for you help at a very difficult time.
On to the last meeting at Manfeild. Although we were down on numbers the rac-
ing was ON! A good mix of cars from different classes battling extremely tightly.
It must have been some great entertainment with only 23 points covering the top
5 cars for the overall results for the weekend. It was great to see Graeme Smyth
get his first SS2000 win at Manfeild. As we all know this car is immaculately pre-
sented and they are finding some real speed out of it this season. Good to also see Brent Thompson win the 10 lapper, but I think
he may owe Ant Te Rito a beer or two, as I spied some green wheels on the Civic’s rear for this race! Thanks also to our fantastic
Saturday evening function sponsor, Hitech Motorsport, for the pizza and beers. A nice change which went down well with all.
The points for the Racetech seat prize have been updated on our website. Remember this is made up from the points of the
last race of every meeting this season. Ant has done well in these races but Brent and Ross Gordon are not too far behind. With
two more races to decide the winner it will be all on. Greg Jones from Racetech will be at Taupo as a guest of SS2000, ready to
present the seat after the last race. So if people could hang around for that it would be great.
It would appear that we will fall short of the 20 car minimum grid at Hampton Downs also, which is a shame considering our strong
start to the season. At least we are not alone, with other classes struggling and this being a hot topic for the upcoming IRC AGM. If
there is anything you would like raised at this AGM please feel free to contact myself as I will be attending on behalf of SS2000. It
is a bit earlier this year so it will be before our SS2000 one.
Well that's it from me, so see you at Hampton Downs ready to "give it some Jandal"!
………. Cheers, Brett

Club Notices:
Track Chatter: • Brett Killip made the most of catching up on some missed
seat time by entering the Pro 7 National Championship in his
Series 1 RX7, at the recent NZGP meeting at Manfeild. After
3 races for the round, he currently leads the Pro 7 class of
NZ Championship. His bright red RX7 has a pedigree of
championship wins of past and so far is looking good to re-
peat this.
• Grady Homewood of Hitech Motorsports is also having an
extremely busy time over this summer season. With barely
a weekend free from motor racing, it has seen him involved
with the Dayne Running TransAm Corvette at Hampton
Downs, James Parker’s “borrowed” ex Bruce Gay’s Pro 7
Plus RX7 at the NZGP Manfeild meeting and then helping out
with various NZGT and SS2000 cars (namely the Green-
slade-Duffin Sylvia) at our last round again at Manfeild.
• The long awaited debut of Grant Te Rito’s Honda S2000
powered Corolla FXGT is about to make its appearance at
our next round at Hampton Downs. Apparently it has been
said that the car is a “work of art” and that the Hampton’s
round will be more of a shake down for both driver and car.
Good to see Grant making a welcome return to our class.
• Manfeild was the last round this season for Gary Maddock’s
Starlet. The attraction of a break in Vegas and other com-
mitments will see him miss the remaining two rounds. How-
ever, Maddock will not be resting on his laurels as he has
both gearbox, suspension set ups and driveshaft issues to
sort out before next season. Busy off season aye Gary?
• Chris Sklenar’s run of bad luck continued at Manfeild when
his Corolla’s engine let go after testing. According to Skle-
nars, the car was running so well before it blew. Sounds
familiar doesn’t it!
• Past Open Class competitor, Peter Edmonds had his race car
fall on him whilst he was underneath working on it. Inevita-
bly he was injured but still managed to be at Manfeild help-
ing Ray Hartley drive his Volvo in the NZGT Class. Edmonds
has since installed a hoist in his garage …. lesson learnt!!

Weather: Day 1—Hot/ fine/
Day 2— Fine/ windy.
Top 10 Qualifiers: 1st—Brett Killip
(RX7); 2nd— Derin Greenslade (Sylvia
turbo); 3rd—Graeme Smyth (RX7);
4th— Ant Te Rito (Civic 2ltr); 5th—
Todd Taylor (Altezza turbo); 6th—Gary
Maddock (Starlet 2ltr); 7th—Brent
Thompson (Civic 2ltr); 8th—Ivan Knauf
(Corolla 1600); 9th—Grant Shirley
(Integra 2ltr); 10th—Tim Dorset
(Datsun Coupe 2ltr).
Scratch Race: Greenslade got the jump on Killip and led, whilst Te Rito
also managed to sneak ahead momen-
tarily of Smyth before the black RX7
regained the position. Taylor was next
in the Altezza but further back Scott
Smith dropped a few spots in his Civic
2ltr. The duel came at the front though
with Greenslade and Killip swapping
places continually over 5 of the 6 laps.
The Sylvia turbo’s straight line speed
outrunning the RX7 on the straights,
with the RX7’s better handling domi-
nating the tighter parts of the track.
Top 1600 contender, Knauf pitted the
Corolla on lap 3 when a throttle linkage
came loose but managed to rejoin until
the finish. Smyth upheld the early chal-
lenge from Te Rito and extended a
slight gap, perhaps the older tyres not
helping the Civic driver for this race.
Ray Brown’s race came to an end when
his Civic 1600 had a CV failure after 5
laps. The battle for the lead also ended
on the pre-ultimate lap when Green-
slade entered the “Pepsi” sweeper too
hot with Killip hot on his tail. The Sylvia
driver ran into the gravel trap, nudging
the tyre wall and ending his race. This
left Killip to take the win comfortably
but it could have been a very different
story. Chris Sklenars was the only non-
starter due to a blown motor in his
Corolla after Friday’s practice.
Results: 1st—Killip; 2nd—Smyth;
3rd—Te Rito; 4th—Taylor; 5th—
Thompson; 6th—Maddock; 7th—
Shirley; 8th—Dorset; 9th—Jane;
10th—Gordon.
Handicap Race (8 laps): Brian Hamilton started first, holding the lead
for the first half of the race. After only
1 lap though, Maddock limped the Star-
let home with a broken CV. Michael
Jane (Corolla), Tim Dorset (Datsun
Race Report—Round 4 Manfeild—Feb. 22nd/23rd Coupe) and Ross Gordon (Sentra turbo)
battled in the opening laps until Dorset
managed to gap both of them to chase
down Hamilton. Te Rito had already
jumped Taylor’s Altezza at the start and
on lap 3, Taylor’s run ended with a
cracked waste gate pipe and a failing
clutch. Killip had also got the better of
Greenslade early on, but the Sylvia with a
flapping guard and a lack of boost, was
unable to provide any further challenge
to the RX7 driver. Smith’s Civic made
strong progress and by lap 5, was lying in
the top 5 with Shirley’s Integra closing.
Once Shirley passed Smith, Te Rito then
tailed and passed the Integra driver but a
mistake at turn 1 saw Shirley leave the
track momentarily. Knauf was also having
a strong run at this point and disposed of
both Jane and Hamilton. With a lap to go,
Te Rito had taken the lead from Dorset,
Smyth had got up to 3rd and Killip was
making his way from 5th to 4th. So Te
Rito took the provisional win but because
he broken out of his handicap time twice,
it handed the victory to the classified
winner, Smyth.
Results: 1st—Smyth; 2nd—Killip;
3rd—Dorset; 4th—Knauf; 5th— Te
Rito; 6th—Jane; 7th—Hamilton; 8th—
Gordon; 9th—Smith; 10th—Brown.
Handicap Race (10 laps): Brown’s Civic wouldn’t start so didn’t make the
grid for this race. Hamilton started first
again and led for 8 laps. Knauf got off to
a great start from the company of Mad-
dock and Shirley. As Jane and Gordon
were coming around to complete their
first lap, Te Rito, Greenslade, Smyth and
Killip had just started their race from pit
lane. By lap 4, after keeping close com-
pany for the early laps, Jane and Gordon
now had Dorset and Smith bearing down
on them. Progressing well was Thompson
who had caught and passed Shirley and
was soon to dispose of Maddock. Knauf’s
CV problems came back to haunt him and
he retired on lap 6. By this time Thomp-
son was a top 5 runner and before long
had got past Jane, Smith and Dorset to
lie 2nd. Te Rito had made it up to 7th,
Killip was 9th and Smyth 11th. 8 laps
down and Hamilton’s lead came to an end
when Thompson passed him. Te Rito had
got past a late improving Maddock and
had made his way up to 2nd spot. How-
ever, Killip’s lunge at the Starlet driver to
gain an extra place as they crossed the
line, saw him just fall short. In the end
Thompson held on to a well deserved win.
Results: 1st—Thompson; 2nd—Te Rito;
3rd—Maddock; 4th—Killip; 5th—Dorset;
6th—Shirley; 7th—Smyth; 8th—Smith;
9th—Hamilton; 10th—Jane.

Pit Exit… There is still a long way to go before the NZ
Motorsport scene recovers from its divisional
wounds inflicted around 2 seasons ago, al-
though recently we did see small signs of its
recovery. At the recent NZGP meeting at
Manfeild, both the NZV8s and the V8 Super
Tourers actually ran at the same meeting,
albeit still as separate classes. It is fair to
say that many of the spectators can see the
frustration of smaller than normal fields in
both classes and it was painfully clear that a combination of both would have provided a
better spectacle. Funnily enough though a reasonable crowd attended, perhaps partly
due to the very international field of TRS Toyota drivers and the reasonable weather
conditions ….. or was it the presence NZ’s household hero Greg Murphy?
Further down the motorsport tier, our IRC series is still holding its own so far a numbers
are concerned but it is by no means overwhelming. However, if you had to compare it
with the NZRDL (NZ Racing Drivers League), only the Honda Cup and 2K Cup classes
are attracting any sort of decent numbers. The other classes are to say the least, a non
event. The formation of a different “series” has allowed competitors to choose what and
where they want to race but has it resulted in an even further split in competitor num-
bers? Has the number of events being run over many consecutive weekends also di-
luted competitor numbers? Whatever the reason, it is certainly ruining the sport!!
See you all at Hamptons …. Cheers, Bob
