BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Brunswick’s own version of an Irish celebration is planned for Saturday,
March 26 at 6:30-10 p.m. at the city’s historic Mary Ross Waterfront Park on Bay Street.
The event, called “SLAINTE!” (pronounced slawn-cha), which is Gaelic for “Cheers,” is a
fundraising event for Signature Squares of Brunswick.
Building upon the success of last year, SLAINTE! promises to be a light-hearted blending of a
European beer garden, a variety of local food with an Irish flare and a few surprises, all part of
old-fashioned Irish fun.
“This fundraiser provides an excellent venue to pull the community together to experience
downtown businesses and celebrate our heritage as a city, in particular, the assets of our historic
squares,” Julie Martin, executive director of Signature Squares, said.
While Brunswick never had an enclave of Irish families settle along the waterfront as Savannah
did, SLAINTE! is a great way to celebrate the heritage of different influences by bringing the
community together. Several downtown restaurants, including Jim’s Corner Café, Fox’s Pizza
Den and Indigo Coastal Shanty, will be providing unique food selections with an Irish flare along
with some terrific beer and wine all purchased very reasonably with food or beverage tickets at
the event.
The main event, with entertainment ranging from an Irish costume and trivia contest to raffle
prizes donated by downtown merchants Ned Cash Jewelers, Hattie’s Book Shop, The Market on
Newcastle and others, starts at 6:30 p.m. Live music will be provided by the HAYSHAKER
band starting at 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chair, family and friends dressed in green to celebrate
throughout the night. Admission to the event is $10 per person or $25 per family and tickets will
be available at the door. Please bring cash for food and raffle tickets.
There will be a live radio broadcast promoting the event during First Friday Promenade March 5
in Downtown Brunswick with six free tickets given away to those who enter the drawing at Ned
Cash Jewelers, Hattie’s Book Shop, True Vine Wines or English Gardens all on Newcastle
Street. The winners will be announced that evening between 6 and 8 p.m.
Signature Squares hopes to raise $20,000 toward their renovation efforts to restore Brunswick’s

14 historic squares. The beautiful landscaping, fountains, benches and period lighting used in the
renovation all work together creating not only a safe community gathering place but they also
reflect the charm and character of their original design and function. These are the unrealized
assets of our city’s heritage.
Signature Squares of Brunswick is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and
preserving the parks and squares within the Historic District of the City of Brunswick. Since
2004, Signature Squares, in cooperation with the City of Brunswick, has overseen the restoration
of Hanover Square, at the south end of Newcastle Street, and Jekyll Square, on Newcastle Street
between Gloucester and Monck Streets. For more information, visit them online at
