Wonderful winter jumping at Clarendon!

A beautiful winters day at Clarendon on Sunday 29th June saw competitors enjoy three rings of excellent competition. David Lawrence and Paul Tridgell designed the courses, and judges included Lyn McLeod, Joyce Brook and Juho Looveer. Coordinator Paul Tridgell said, “The numbers were down slightly due to some competitors being away at a competition in Gunnedah, however we were delighted with the day’s proceedings and we saw some great jumping!” “We have some exciting improvements planned for SSJC in the coming months. The construction of a permanent in ground water jump of world cup dimensions will commence next week in the main arena, and we have an extension to our irrigation system to arena four to ensure we have good surfaces in all arenas,” Paul added. In the main ring, event rider Sam Lyle from the Hunter Valley made his trip to Clarendon worthwhile with the quinella in the 1.20m class on his two horses Classic Mischief and Star Vision. Sam is the assistant national eventing coach and will be travelling to Hong Kong shortly

to help prepare our Olympic eventing team. Young riders Sarah Beale and Nakita Misner were the winners of the 1.10m and the D grade events, while Frenchman Erwin Le Meur, who rides for George Sanna, was impressive on the imported warmblood stallion CP Ulixes to win the 1.30m event. In ring 3 Bianca Leong was a winner in the 80cm, while Stephen Tridgell (son of club president Paul Tridgell) won the 90cm class on his skewbald mare Splash. Cassandra Looveer rode well on JFK to win the 1.00m class judged by her father Juho Looveer. In ring 1 Mitch Beale from Duffys Forest had a great day on Bucky to win the 70cm and the 80cm events. Young Nicole Harvell from Box Hill was impressive on her chestnut Arab Sixpence to win the 60cm event. Judge Joyce Brook awarded young Madison Robertson from Pitt Town a special encouragement award for jumping a double clear round at her first competition on her horse Minty. Other combinations to impress on the day included: Amy Robertson for two good placings on Snobmop, Monika Herfurth from Kurrajong who is forming a good partnership with her new horse All Alone Too for two good placings

and Sandra McLean who has shown great improvement to finish second in the 90cm event. Sunday was the last event at which Travelling Horse Statements will be required, as the restrictions will be lifted on the 1st July. Pre entries will still be required for all future SSJC events. Please check the website, www.teamj.com.au for details of entry closing times. SSJC are getting prepared to launch an online entry system that is hoped will greatly streamline the entering process. Competitors will be able to trial the registration and entry system on laptop computers provided at coming events in the clubhouse. The SSJC program for July is as follows: 6th July – Training Day all rings (entries close Wednesday 2nd July), 19th July- Under 21s Showjumping 12.30 start. 20th July – SSJC Winter Championship (entries close Monday 14th July). Entry forms can be downloaded from www.teamj.com.au.

It was sad to hear of the death last week of Lucy Derksen (wife of former long time SSJC President Ted Derksen). Lucy was an honorary Life Member of SSJC and gave countless hours of work over the years in the office - taking entries and maintaining SSJC paperwork.

Lucy was a devoted mother and grandmother and I would like to send on behalf of all SSJC our deepest sympathies to Ted and all the family on their sad loss.

Chrissie Johnson

Jody Sloper Clinic June 7-8 2008

I am starting to think Jody Sloper has some ancient ancestors who were related to THOR the God of thunder! Chrissie and I frantically tried to find an all-weather/indoor venue for the latest Jody school after watching the rain pour for the previous week prior to her arrival. Deja vu I felt, as the last time she was over here, prior to EI we had the same problem. Also the same problem I have every time with Jody Everyone wanted to come! All was well and due to Chrissie Johnson and David Lawrence’s sterling efforts we managed to procure SIEC for the riding and Coaches clinic. Day 1 Started dry and we were in one of the all weather arena’s which was wonderful. As previous clinic attendees

know Jody’s attention to flatwork is the basis to her teaching and as the first group struggled with leg yield in and leg yield out on the 20m circle I gave thanks to having a supple horse underneath me! Everything that we learn with Jody comes back to the way your horse moves on the flat and we were to find that out when later in the lesson we had to leg yield a small amount to keep straight from one fence to another. Day 2 Started wet but dried up thank goodness. Today we were raising the bar mentally for us all. We carried forward our flatwork to work through grids and curving lines The final group working through a grid that resembled pick up sticks as there was so many rails but not a problem from any horse

or rider, which shows flatwork pays off! What is wonderful about Jody is her eye for detail. No one seems to escape I think she have one of those reversing camera’s in the back of her head as she seems to know what is happening behind her, and she manages to communicate with riders of all levels and ages and leave then feeling good about themselves. It was great to see a wonderful mix of mature and young riders and horses who all took away some Jody knowledge. Jody Thank you, we hope to see you back again before the end of the year ----but----------hold off the rain while your here!

Jody Sloper – the Coach’s Coach!

Report on her Coaching Seminar- 9th June 2008.

After missing Jody’s last proposed visit in December 07 due to EI, followers were delighted with news of her return in June on 7th 8th & 9th . For organisers Sue Coonan and Christine Johnson, the weather created more than a few nightmares. The SSJC grounds were too waterlogged to use and a venue was looking hard to find until the NSW EFA came to the rescue and organised the facilities at SIEC, which were excellent. The first two days were a rider clinic and the third day was a coach’s clinic. This was conducted with a cohesive mix of practical demonstration lessons (both flat work and jumping) and classroom lectures. The theme for the clinic was the integration of flat work for jumping riders. Jody has been travelling to Australia and giving clinics for over ten years now, and while she sees an improvement in our flatwork skills, she says we still have to get better.

“As coaches we need to better and better problem solvers, and we need to find ways of making flat work relevant and interesting through the exercises we use, in order to keep our jumping students interested!” Jody explained. Understanding the needs of both horse and rider and helping students set realistic goals was an interesting session, as was the topic of learning styles of students and how to best meet the needs of different styles of learners. The final session of the day was an interesting exercise in reading the tasks and course plans for the medal classes in Canada, where competitors are challenged by gymnastic tasks and demanding tracks. These tasks included angling fences, trot approaches, no stirrup work, long and short distances, obedience fences, bounces, flying changes, rein backs, halts and hand gallops all within a demanding course that required accurate riding and an obedient and responsive horse.

Jody urged the coaches to do their homework, know the terminology of all disciplines and keep learning. Don’t be static - keep up, use other coaches as mentors, and share your knowledge! The twenty coaches in attendance included a fascinating mix of coaches from a variety of disciples and many who had travelled quite a way to attend- such as Queenslander Lyn Coomb, Elizabeth Grenda from Albury, and Emma Smith from Victoria. All who attended were inspired, and all were keen to attend the next time Jody visits. As leading local Coach Colleen Brook put it, “It is certainly a wonderful experience to listen to Jody's positive informative teaching!” For more information about future Coaches Clinics contact Christine Johnson on 0412 405079 or go to the SSJC Link on www.teamj.com.au
