From the Principal

Sport

Well done to all students who have been selected to represent Rand-wick Boys’ High School in winter sports teams for 2016. We are very proud of you and wish you well in your respective competitions. Remember that the wearing of our uniform with the ‘crest on your chest’ means you commit to playing hard but fair, take a win and a lose well, display sportsmanship at all times, shake hands with all opponents after a game; regardless of what may have happened during the game, remember you are representing the ethos of what it means to be a ‘Randwick Boy’ and have fun! To all who have cho-sen to participate in house sport, the same values apply. Thank you to all staff who have volunteered to coach sides this season. Your commitment means a great deal to the students and parents and we are grateful for your efforts. Thanks to Mr Brown for all his efforts with sport and Mr Manavis, who has coordinated sport for the past 3 weeks whilst Mr Brown was absent.

Harmony Day Assembly

Congratulations to all students who contributed to our very suc-cessful Harmony Day assembly this week. The scheduled assembly was postponed due to inclement weather and was held on Thursday 31st March. Mrs Olsen did an amazing job coordinating the assembly. Thank you to all who made the assembly a success.

Year 8 class added

We have started the year with more students and with more students enroll-ing than we anticipated. The name of Randwick Boys’ High School is con-stantly improving. We need to keep this momentum going with how we look, how we behave, how we achieve and how we present in the community. We have a waiting list in Year 11, with students outside our drawing area applying for places in the senior school; however, we cannot accommodate them at this point in time. With an increase in student numbers comes an increase in staff numbers. We have now included another class in the Year 8 timetable. This means Year 8 will now have 5 classes instead of 4. The benefits include smaller class sizes. Planning for a shuffle of some students into the new class has been discussed amongst the Head Teachers of each faculty. From next term, new timetables will be issued as some students change classes. A new timetable for the entire school (Years 7 – 12) will be issued due to the addition of this class. No other year groups will need to change classes; however, a change in when they have certain classes during the two week cycle may differ. Please be aware your son will be issued a new timetable from Term 2.

Have a great holiday

I wish all students, staff and families a safe and restful holiday. We do not publish a newsletter in the last week of term, so this will be the last newsletter for the term. Our next newsletter will be published in Week 2 of Term 2.

Early Leavers from School

From time to time, students are required by their parents to leave school early. On all occasions, we require written authorisation from parents to be able to approve this. This is especially impor- tant on sport afternoons (Wednesdays) when large num- bers of students are off site at different venues.

Students should bring their parental letters to the Deputy and they will be signed. Letters are then taken to the rolls office where the early leave is logged on our system.

Student feeling unwell while at school

If your son/ward becomes unwell at school, he needs to:

1. Ask teacher for a note to go to the office.

2. After reporting to the office he will be sent to the Deputy Principal.

3. The Deputy Principal will decide if you need to be called.

This ensures your son/ward’s attendance will be correctly marked for the rest of the day.

ArtExpress Excursion

On Wednesday 16 March Mr Raskall, Mrs Olsen, Ms Harold and I had the pleasure of attending the opening of 2016 ArtExpress at the Art Gallery of NSW to celebrate the accomplishments of 2015 HSC Visual Arts student, Gabriel Hutcheon. Gabriel’s photomedia work, “Above & Below” was selected for the 2016 ArtExpress.

Gabriel’s photographic practice comprises of a series of images reflecting the grittiness and isolation in contemporary urban envi-ronments from abandoned, debilitated buildings, to the fast pace life of the city and it’s colorful night dwellers.

ArtExpress is a free exhibition and will be open until May 15.

On Tuesday 29 March the Year 9, 11 and 12 Visual Arts students attended a study morning for Art Express and viewed the exhibition. The exhibition encom-passes a broad range of approaches and expressive forms, including ceramics, collection of works, docu-mented forms, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based forms. Our students proudly viewed Gabriel’s work.

Gabriel Hutcheon

The popularity of Gabriel’s photographs is continuing to grow, his 34,000 Instagram followers has landed him a number of photo-campaigns including a contract with Puma UK to shoot their up and coming range. Gabriel has also recently been announced as an Alpha Ambassador for Sony. Sony have provided Gabriel with a range of the latest mirrorless DSLR and he has been sent on a few high profile shoots, including one with NRL Rooster’s Prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

James Hutcheon

Another bit of good news is James Hutcheon. James completed the HSC in 2014 and went on to study a certificate 4 in Design Fun-damentals at Enmore TAFE. After completing the course James decided to apply for university and is now studying a double degree in Visual Arts and Education with in the aspiration of becoming a Visual Arts teacher.

Newtown Street Art Excursion

Visual Arts students in Years 8 & 9 have recently had the plea-sure of enjoying a guided walk with an organisation called ‘Culture Scouts’ through the backstreets of the buzzing and vibrant suburbs of Newtown & Enmore.

Hidden away, on the back of buildings, restaurants, homes and garage doors, lie some of Sydney’s best kept art secrets. Students have been learning about the history of Street Art. Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and contin-ues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art.

Students experienced the work of both local and internationally recognised street artists such as Will Coles, PHIBS, ZAP, LUCY LUCY, JUMBO and loads more.

Students have returned to their art classrooms full of vibrant ideas and are busily preparing their own stencil designs, dealing with political and social issues close to their own hearts.

The Visual Arts department looks forward to exhibiting the student work at our CAPA showcase later in the year.

Garden Working Bee

This week Bunnings came to RBHS with 20 lillipillis to plant along the Rainbow and Avoca Street fence lines. They also came with garden shovels and forks that are now ours to keep. Our hope is the lillipillis will ease noise and air pollution as well as improve the appearance of the school. Perhaps one day food tech can use the fruit to make lillipilli jam. This gar-den is to be watered from the existing rainwater tank near the hall. There’s still more work to be done.

The next job is to dig up the dianella that’s growing in the area and replant it along the fence line to reduce weeds and stop woodchips going on to the foot path. If you’d like to be involved please email [email protected]. Thanks to the Year 8s who came to help with the planting and to Ms Andrewartha for getting them there.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week was round one in our winter grade sport com-petitions. Many of our teams had a bye and we had mixed results in both rugby and football against a traditionally strong oppo-nent in Epping Boys High’.

Our Football 13bs and 15s were unfortunate with away and home losses respectfully. Standout player in the 15s was midfielder Ryan Teague, always displaying authority and control on the ball. Better luck next week boys!

Football 14s won 3-2 away with excellent management by Mr Bladwell and standout performances firstly in goals by Kosta Fradelakis, making a series of spectacular saves, and secondly by Archie Chen with excellent finishing earning himself a hatrick. Well done boys!

Rugby 13s earned disqualification points against Normanhurst while our 14s went down to a strong Epping side. Early games allow for fine tuning and adjustments by coaches so better luck moving forwards boys!

Mr Grasso’s lawn bowls team also won away to North Sydney with steady precision bowling by Year 7 student Hamish Murray.

Hockey

In the first game of the season the boys started the first half slowly only scoring one goal. After half time discussion of backing players and using the field more efficiently the boys exploded onto the field. They scored eight goals with Minwoo Yoo standing out as he scored four goals and Nivek scored two. Tadhg scored his first goal in his first season - an outstanding start. Everybody played their part and the whole team is pumped for next week. A great team effort.
