100% of your fi re levy goes to our fi re servicesLast year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfi res Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fi re services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession.

100 per cent of the fi re levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes fi refi ghters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fi re stations and 2,300 trucks.

Each year, Victoria’s fi refi ghters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fi res, fi res in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fi re levy.

Council lightens its billsHume council says it can save $400,000 a year for the next 10 years by upgrading its street lights. The two-stage upgrade will include 4612 replacements from Sunbury to Broadmeadows, to be done by December. The project will be completed with help from Jemena, which owns and maintains the municipality’s street light network.

Pupils do their bit for naturePupils at Gisborne Primary School have planted 200 native seedlings to attract wildlife, including eastern spinebills and feather-tail gliders. The planting on Friday recognised National Tree Day (July 27). Mulch and seedlings, including silver banksia and snow gums, were donated by Macedon Ranges council and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries.

Website for Hanging RockFriends of Hanging Rock will get $1950 for revegetation and to produce a website to promote the group’s activities. The grant will be made through the state government’s Communities for Nature program.

Cops blitz bikie homesMore than 300 police raided Rebels motorcycle gang clubhouses and residential properties across Melbourne last Tuesday, including a clubhouse in Sunbury. More than 20 warrants targeted Rebels and their associates as part of an investigation into the death of Michael Ali Sleiman on January 26.

By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Tim Jones was fascinated by two things when he was growing up in Wales: engraving wood and the ‘skippies’ in Australia.

Thirty years later, he calls Hanging Rock home and wood sculpting is his career.

Jones (pictured) was introduced to the art by Peter Blake, a friend of his father, when he was 11.

“Peter showed me all about engraving wood and that Christmas Santa Claus brought me tools to sculpt with,” he says with a laugh.

It’s the three-dimensional nature of sculpturing that draws Jones to the medium.

“Sculptures have a real presence: unlike painting, you can start from the back and work towards the front,” he says.

“It’s a lot looser to work with and they have a physical presence.”

Jones says he is a “romantic at heart” who is inspired by literature, poetry and black and white film.

His latest work – the wind-lustred trees inspired by the film Great Expectations – is a “metaphor for a self-portrait”.

“I saw [director] David Lean’s version of Great Expectations and was drawn towards trees bent over, clattering around,” he says.

“I kept drawing and realised I had pushed the image on paper further than the film.”

Jones opened his studios to the state minister for tourism and special events, Louise Asher, last Tuesday for the official launch of the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Open Studios.

The minister announced a $15,000 grant to assist with the marketing of the event, which will be held on the weekends of November 1-2, 8-9 and 15-16.

More men will be ‘at work’ in Sunbury after a second Men’s Shed in the town threw open its doors to welcome new members on Saturday.

The shed, at 158-160 Evans Street, with about 74 members, will operate with help from Hume council. The original shed is at Sunbury Community Health, 12-28 Macedon Street.

The new shed is open to people of all ages, and organisers are looking for more members.

Secretary Norman Ripp says: “It’s a place to escape. We’re all retired down there; we’re all in the same boat. We like to yak away. Guys tend to let out more when we’re all together rather than with women.”

Mr Ripp says men don’t have to be constructors to be involved with the shed.

“You can just go down there; some people play around with woodwork, some play chess.

“You don’t have to be someone who knows about woodwork, carpentry or metalwork.”

Mr Ripp said a lot of work had brought the shed up to scratch. “The former president had visions of it being the best in the area.

“We’ve been given a lot of money from the council to get the shed established and we live off donations and money from sausage sizzles. If it wasn’t for these people who donated time or money, we would be a fish out of water.”

Former president Ian Lupson was the main instigator in getting the shed up and running in the town. Mr Ripp said the shed could potentially open for longer hours. For now, it’s open Monday-Wednesday, 9am-noon.

Gisborne’s William Lee was born into a world surrounded by horses.

His father, Graham, was a horseman, a farrier and harness racing trainer, owner and driver and Lee was riding as young as one.

It was these early years that played a part to preparing Lee, 23, for one of his biggest challenges yet – as bushranger John Dunn in the short film The Legend of Ben Hall.

Lee admits he was cast in the role because of his horsemanship.

“I’ll be doing my own stunts,” he said. “I don’t know yet what stunts, but I’ll be riding alongside a stunt man.”

Kyneton has been chosen as the backdrop for the film and the cameras will start rolling on August 18. Filming will continue for two weeks before a week-long stint in New South Wales.

Ben Hall was an Australian bushranger who was shot dead by police in NSW in 1865.For three years, he and his gang carried out hundreds of robberies, some of which were to taunt and humiliate police.

Dunn, the youngest member of the gang, joined in 1864 and was only 19 when he was hanged in Darlinghurst jail.

The 50-minute film is written, produced and directed by Melbourne filmmaker Matthew Holmes.

It is produced by Two Tone Pictures and Palmarium LLC and will premiere in Forbes, NSW in May next year for the 150th anniversary of Hall’s death.

It’s hoped the film will be picked up by television stations and screened as a telemovie.

The pain in Tennis Elbow usually has a gradual onset, but occasionally will come on suddenly. It is most common between the ages of 35 and 65 and affects males and females equally. It is much more likely to occur in the dominant arm.

Signs and Symptoms

•Pain is experienced at the outer elbow and may radiate into the back of the forearm.

•Pain is aggravated by gripping activities, rotational movements such as turning on a tap, wrist extension movements (cocking the back of the hand up) and lifting with the palm facing down.

• Morning stiffness

• Weakness in gripping and lifting may develop

Diagnosis of tennis elbow is usually quite straight forward with the performance of clinical tests. X-rays or other imaging modalities are not routinely required. Tennis Elbow can become a very chronic condition persisting for months or years if treatment is not sought.

Physiotherapy treatment for Tennis Elbow may include

• Massage

• Joint mobilisation

• Dry needling

• Ice

• Prescription of a brace to assist with pain relief and improve function

• Instruction in progressive strengthening exercises.

• Analysis and correction of predisposing postural/ ergonomic or technique factors that may be causing or exacerbating the problem

Or lateral epicondylosis is a very common condition that afflicts not only tennis players, but anyone that uses their arm repetitively with gripping or lifting activities for work, sport or leisure. Tennis elbow is associated with repetitive trauma to the wrist extensor tendons, which attach to the outer point of the elbow (Lateral Epicondyle). It was once thought that these tendons were simply inflamed, it is now realised that tennis elbow involves microscopic degenerative tears to the tendon.

On the Melbourne edge of town, within a saunter of shops and school bus stop, this property of about 2.02 hectares is all about lifestyle, with a set-up to run a pony or two or have a go at hobby farming.

And the owner-built house is a classic solid build, with a sealed double-height atrium, different floor levels, colonial windows and feature ceilings embodying its distinction.

Sheltered on two sides by dense conifer planting, the property’s circular driveway delivers one to the front door, beyond which is a terracotta-tiled entry hall. On the right, a step-down family room has floorboards and a bay window dressed in roman blinds (throughout); an adjoining step-up study, under a sloping timber-lined ceiling, has two feature leadlight windows and

etched-glass bifolds to the kitchen. Both study and family room wrap around the aforementioned atrium enclosing an elegant water feature.

To the left of entry, the main bedroom has two sets of robes and an en suite with timber vanity unit. Three more bedrooms with robes are down a tiled hallway, as is the cedar-lined main bathroom with blackwood vanity unit, venetian blinds and mirrored cosmetic cupboard.

Next to a meals area with sloping ceiling, the kitchen has loads of blackwood cabinetry, atrium views from the sink, and dishwasher, 900mm gas cooktop and dual wall ovens sporting the Miele tag. There’s another step down to a large lounge room which captures the best bits: pitched cedar-lined ceiling with exposed oregon

beams, bay window, terracotta floor tiles and a fireplace and wood cupboard set in a feature brick wall.

The meals area opens to a pitched-roof, perspex-covered pergola above crazy paving. Right next to this is a shade-dappled rock pond with cascade and fish stock; and, on the other side, are stretches of fenced lawn.

The driveway circles around past a paddock with shelter and on to a huge Colorbond shed (concrete and power) with attached dog run/vegie patch/chook pens.

The property has ducted vacuum, hydronic heating throughout, town water connection and a remote-controlled double garage.

NeediNg ANswers?Looking to sell your home? Chances are you’ll need a helping handfrom a real estate professional. And while there’s certainly no shortageof agents to choose from, finding the right one for you can be easiersaid than done. In fact, even if you interview a prospective agent, it canbe difficult to tell if they’re a good fit unless you know what questionsto ask.The following are three questions every agent should be ableto answer. Can i have some references? Real estate agents thriveon the good words of past clients, so if an agent is unable to provideyou with references, it’s a red flag. There’s no better way to find thisout than by checking their track record with previous home sellers.where’s my comparative market analysis? A good real estateagent should be an expert in his or her local area. More than justpersonal knowledge, they should also be able to provide you withdata relating to similar properties that have sold recently, giving youa better idea of what kind of price to set. will you be my mainpoint of contact? It’s important that you not only know who to getin touch with. You should always know who’s in charge of selling yourhome and how to get in touch with them. After all, it’s your home onthe line – ask LJ Whorlow First National, we have the answers!

First home buyers jittersFor many people, buying a first home can be a scary thought. After all, you’re

taking on a valuable asset with a significant home loan to fund it. Buying a first

home doesn’t always have to be such a nervewracking experience – there are

many ways you can help yourself to conquer first home buyer jitters. stick

with an agent you can trust – it’s important to have someone guide you

on your journey.A trustworthy and knowledgeable real estate agent is the best

person to help you as they have an understanding of the market. Get your

finance done and dusted – it pays to get your finance pre-approved.This

will help you find out how much you can borrow so you can search for a home

with confidence. Don’t forget to factor in other cost you may incur in the

purchasing process. Do your due diligence – this involves keeping an eye

on market trends, obtaining a professional inspection and research amenities

Real Estate Today

54 Evans Street, Sunbury 9744 255540 Aitken Street, Gisborne 5428 2800 Leaders in Real Estate Excellence

It’s great to own the property you live in. Not only can you decorate the place exactly how you want it, but

it’s a significant step in becoming financially independent as well.

One significant benefit is that you will actually start to systematically save money. Paying rent just sees

dollars flow away to the landlord, but paying a monthly mortgage returns the principal portion to your

pocket. And with inflation in the picture, your mortgage payments will get relatively cheaper as your

income goes up.

Another way of looking at things is what will happen when you retire?

If you are a renter, your rent will be constantly advancing with inflation, and your fixed retirement income

will increasingly decline as your rent eats into your savings.

The forces of inflation are what really make the difference. As a renter you will constantly witness rent

increases. The lure is having a greater disposable income in the early stages of renting. But over time this

advantage disappears.

The way mortgages are generally structured, the early years see more interest than principal being

paid off. But as the years advance the opposite becomes true. Not only this, but other investments you

make are taxable, whereas all the capital accruements in your own home are tax free. You are also in a

much better credit position should you need to apply for a loan. If you have a real estate need, feel free

to phone me, John Dunlop, on 9744 2555, or to call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for

more personal attention.

Home Ownership Gives Security

General manager of Rosenthal Estate, Paul Millett, says work has started on Sunbury’s 118.6-hectare Rosenthal development.

“Hume council CEO Domenic Isola and the mayor, Casey Nunn, have committed to attend the soil-turning on Tuesday, August 12 at 2pm, at the sales office in Vineyard Road, Sunbury,” Millett said.

“The master-planned development, just one kilometre from Sunbury’s town centre, will comprise more than 1300 residential lots catering to a wide range of lifestyle options and ensuring a diverse community of all ages and stages of life.”

In addition, Rosenthal will have more than 30 hectares of open space, including parks, reserves and Harpers Creek.

“Among the services, we envisage a

major supermarket, a selection of specialty shops and child and health-care facilities.”

The project has been well received, Millett said, with more than 130 sales to date. “We are excited to have started construction” said Millett, whose family has farmed the land since the early 1900s. The name ‘Rosenthal’ dates back to the 1860s, when the land was predominantly used for wine production.

The display village is due to open late next year.

If the Sunbury Lions are to go back-to-back they will need to be on the top of their game in the Ballarat Netball League.

Despite last year’s premiers sitting on top of the ladder, with one loss and a draw, Lions’ coach Kim Bailey said it was anything but a one horse race.

“The competition has stepped up a level this season and there are no easy games,” said Bailey ahead of the team’s 72-17 win against Melton South on Sunday.

“It’s a hard slog and whether it is about trying to counteract our running game, which is our strength, I’m not sure, but the standard is up.”

Bailey said the team was travelling “OK” this season.

“Our team has had changes in structure with losing Sophie O’Kane, who was our goal attack last year.

“We’ve had a couple of young goalers replace her.

“We need to start hitting form.”Bailey said the side had more depth than last

year and was benefiting from the experience of winning the premiership. “We’ve had Sophie Gunn out playing ANL and Hayley Mackie has been injured the last few weeks.

“Katherine Dicker played her first game on Saturday in A-grade, which is a major positive.

“We have a few other girls outside the normal team who are qualified to play finals. We just have to find the right combinations at the right times.”

Bailey said one of the off-season recruits, Ruth Smith, had been the biggest improver.

“When Sophie [Gunn] has been away she has had to step up.

“Rebecca Moffat and Rebecca Anstey have been stellar in defence again.” Rebecca Anstey has been one of the standouts for the Sunbury Lions. (Shawn Smits)

Lions eye back-to-backBendigo Football LeagueGisborne smashed Eaglehawk by 105 points in the Bendigo Football League at Gardiner Reserve. Kyneton lost to Strathfieldsaye, 21.16 (142) to 9.5 (59).

BFLSunbury Lions ended their three-game losing streak, defeating Melton South by four points on Sunday in the Ballarat Football League. The Lions looked to have control of the game early, but in the end held off the fast-finishing Bloods 14.6 (90) to 12.14 (86).

FFVSunbury United had a 0-0 draw with Sydenham Park in FFV state league 1 north west on Saturday. United sit ninth on the ladder. In state league west 5, Kyneton District lost to Lara 4-2.

EDFLEast Sunbury was unable to hold off Jacana in its Essendon District Football League division 2 match. The Thunder led at three-quarter time by three points, but eventually lost 10.20 (80) to 9.7 (61).

AFL draftGisborne’s Matthew Goodyear and Romsey’s Jake Lever are among six Calder Cannons players selected to attend the AFL combine camp. The camp runs for four days in October.

Jack and Mavis Kennedy, both 86, decided to try Choice Fresh Meals after Mavis had heard good reports from friends.

Thank you

I belong to a seniors club and we began talking about meals one day and someone said they were using the company and we decided to give it a try.The main reason we did it was that if anything happens to me, Jack would struggle to carry on with preparing

food. And the same goes for me if something happened to Jack. It’s a nice break from cooking every night and

they have a large choice of meals…everyone has something they don’ t like, so it is nice to have a good range to

choose from.We have tried a few different services, but we are very happy with Choice Fresh Meals..It’s conveniently delivered to us by Choice Fresh Meals who also now deliver fresh bread and milk and I look

forward to not having to cook for the three nights… it’s a nice break.Mavis
