North Carolina State University Course Syllabus ST 350 - TBD - Economics and Business Statistics ST 350 Course Syllabus ST 350 – Economics and Business Statistics Section TBD FALL 2013 3 Credit Hours Course Description Introduction to statistics applied to management, accounting, and economic problems. Emphasis on statistical estimation, inference, simple and multiple regression, and analysis of variance. Use of computers to apply statistical methods to problems encountered in management and economics. Learning Outcomes Statistics is not a spectator sport! Like any other endeavor, you will get out of this course what you put into it. The material that we discuss in this course does not "go away" when the semester is over. The remainder of your undergraduate career and your career after graduation will benefit greatly if you learn this material now rather than later when teachers and bosses simply assume it is already part of your analytical toolbox. Some of you are already involved in careers and have nonacademic jobs, but for most of you school is your primary job; treat this class as part of that primary job. In the workplace, skipping days on the job can have negative consequences (such as getting fired!) Your college courses are no different. Course Structure Course Policies During many lectures I will present powerpoint slide questions that deal with current and recent lecture material; you will submit answers to these questions using your clicker. Your performance on the clicker questions will be one factor in the determination of your course grade. Each question is worth 1 point. To allow for an occasional unavoidable absence from lecture, 90% of the semester total number of clicker questions will be the basis for determining your clicker score. Your clicker grade will be based on the average of the number of questions you answer and the number of questions that you answer correctly. GradingGrade Components

Component Weight DetailsMidtermExams

300 Midterm Exams I, II, III 100 points each

Final 100Points

Homework 390Points

• The homework portion of the course will consist of 14assignments worth a total of 390 points. • I will use Webassign, an internet-based homework deliverysystem, to distribute and grade the homework. • Homework 0 simply requires you to register your clicker. Youcannot access homework 1 until homework 0 is completed. • Homework assignments 1-13 are subject matter assignments andare worth 30 points each. (see Grading link in the left panel). • No homework grades will be dropped when determiningthe course grade. • Individual homework questions will be numerical-answer, multiple choice and True/False. You will be allowed 3 or 4attempts for numerical-answer and most multiple choicequestions. You will be allowed 1 attempt on True/False questions.

• There will be a separate forum in webassign for each homework assignment where students can post questions or responses toquestions from other students, and discuss the homeworkproblems.

Clickers 100Points

During many lectures I will present powerpoint slide questions that deal with current and recent lecture material; you will submit answers to these questions using your clicker. Your performance on the clicker questions will be one factor in the determination of your course grade (see Grading elsewhere on this course web page). Each question isworth 1 point. To allow for an occasional unavoidable absence fromlecture, 90% of the semester total number of clicker questions will bethe basis for determining your clicker score. Your clicker grade will bebased on the average of the number of questions you answer and thenumber of questions that you answer correctly. EXAMPLE. Semester total number of clicker questions: 80. Basis

points for determining student clicker score: 90% of 80 = 72. 1.student answers total of 70 clicker questions, 65 of which are answered correctly, (70+65)/2 = 67.5; 67.5/72 = .94; studentclicker score = 94 points. 2. student answers total of 78 clicker questions, 76 of which are answered correctly, (78 + 76)/2 = 77; 77/72 = 1.07; studentclicker score = 100 points. 3. student answers total of 78 clicker questions, 62 of which are answered correctly, (78 + 62)/2 = 70; 70/72 = .97; studentclicker score = 97 points. Bring your clicker to every lecture since without it you cannot receive

credit for clicker points.

LectureWorksheets

110Points

During some lectures and ALL lab periods one or more lecture worksheets will be completed. The worksheet will require individual or group participation in a basic activity related to recent lecture materialand will be collected at the conclusion of the lecture or lab period. The worksheet will not be graded for accuracy or correctness but students will be credited with 5 points for each worksheet that is handed in at the lab or lecture at which the worksheet is completed. Approximately 30 worksheets will be completed during the semester. The 22 best worksheet grades will be used in determining yourgrade. Two copies of each worksheet are included in the coursepack;one to hand in and the other to keep as a study aid.

Letter GradesThis Course uses Standard NCSU Letter Grading Scale

97 ≤ A+ ≤ 10093 ≤ A < 9790 ≤ A- < 9387 ≤ B+ < 9083 ≤ B < 8780 ≤ B- < 8377 ≤ C+ < 8073 ≤ C < 7770 ≤ C- < 7367 ≤ D+ < 7063 ≤ D < 6760 ≤ D- < 630 ≤ F < 60

Requirements for Credit-Only (S/U) GradingIn order to receive a grade of S, students are required to take all exams and quizzes, complete allassignments, and earn a grade of C- or better. Conversion from letter grading to credit only (S/U) grading issubject to university deadlines. Refer to the Registration and Records calendar for deadlines related tograding. Information about and requirements for auditing a course can be found at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-04.

Policies on Incomplete GradesIf an extended deadline is not authorized by the instructor or department, an unfinished incomplete gradewill automatically change to an F after either (a) the end of the next regular semester in which the student isenrolled (not including summer sessions), or (b) the end of 12 months if the student is not enrolled, whichever is shorter. Incompletes that change to F will count as an attempted course on transcripts. Theburden of fulfilling an incomplete grade is the responsibility of the student. The university policy onincomplete grades is located at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-50-3.

Late Assignments

If you have an unexcused absence from one of the first three exams, the exam score of 0 will NOTbe replaced as described in the previous sentence.

Attendance PolicyFor complete attendance and excused absence policies, please see http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-03

Attendance Policy

Consistent class attendance is expected and strongly recommended. In classes with a large number ofstudents it is natural to feel anonymous and invisible, which in turn makes it easy to rationalize that"cutting" class is inconsequential. This is not the case! Experience shows that poor attendancecauses many student problems and has a negative impact on grades. There are good reasons foroccasionally missing class (your own or a family member's illness, for example). If you are diligent in yourattendance when you are able to attend, legitimate absences beyond your control should not be aproblem.

Absences Policy

With proper medical documentation of your illness you will be allowed to make up without penalty anymissed homework assignments, lecture worksheets, and exams.

Makeup Work Policy

None.

Additional Excuses Policy

Late work will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor and must be arranged at the student'sinitiative within two weeks of the due date, prior to two weeks before the end of classes. This policyincludes webassign homework and lecture worksheets. For example: i) in week 13 of the semester don'task to submit the week 3 assignment that you "forgot" to submit in week 3; ii) don't submit, for example,15 lecture worksheets the last week of the semester. In addition, student requests to improve the score of previously submitted webassign homework will notbe granted. For example, in week 13 of the semester, a request to improve a low score on the week 3assignment will not be granted. If the lowest of your 3 midterm exam scores is lower than your score on the final exam, I will substitutethe mean of your lowest midterm exam score and final exam score for the lowest midterm exam score(note that the final exam score will NOT be replaced in this manner).
