TENDING THE VINEYARD
“...To do a good job of nurturing and tending the vineyard, our hearts and our minds must be kept in Jesus Christ, as Saint Paul says, by "the peace of God which passes all understanding" (Phil 4:7). In this way our thoughts and plans will correspond to God’s dream: to form a holy people who are his own and produce the fruits of the kingdom of God (cf. Mt21:43).” Pope Francis
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I shall gather the remnant of my flock and bring them back to their meadow.

(Ephesians 2:13-18) Gospel — When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he began to teach them many things. (Mark 6:30-34)

PRAYER FOR SERENITY God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time. Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace, taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.

HOLY WATER: A liquid whose chemical formula is H2OLY.
HYMN: A song of praise usually sung in a key three octaves higher than that of the congregation’s range.
RECESSIONAL HYMN: The last song at Mass often sung a little more quietly, since most of the people have already left.
INCENSE: Holy Smoke!
JESUITS: An order of priests known for their ability to found colleges with good basketball teams.
JONAH: The original “Jaws” story. JUSTICE: When kids have kids of their own. KYRIE ELEISON: The only Greek words that most Catholics can recognize besides gyros and baklava.
CIRCULAR SPIRITUALITY Here is a practical and easy way to pray:
Take a compass and draw a perfect circle. The center of the circle - the place where you pricked the paper to insert the compass point - is the same distance from any point on the circumference. Perfect.
Imagine that the circle you drew is the world and everyone in it, and that God is the center. Mark a point somewhere on the circle and write your name. Now mark another point on the circle and write the name of someone dear to you. At a third point on the circle, write the name of someone you’re not that fond of. Now draw lines from each of these points to that center point - the point that is God. As each line moves closer to God, you will see that each line moves closer to the others - until, in God, they meet.
A monk of the sixth-century, Dorotheos of Gaza, suggested the metaphor of the circle to understand our relationship to God in and of others. As we move toward God, Father Dorotheos preached, we move closer to one another - and as we move away from one another, we move away from God.
We are all points on the same circle making our way to God.
Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord,
when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David. — Jeremiah 23:5a

Gospel (Mark 6: 30 - 34 )
The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
Today’s text prepares the readers for the first miracle of the multiplication of the bread. Although the Twelve were tired and needed time alone with Jesus, he responds first to the greater need of the crowd. He felt compassion toward them because “they were like sheep without a shepherd.” This is probably a reference to the Good Shepherd of Ezekiel 34:15. Jesus satisfied their spiritual hunger by teaching them many things, thus gradually becoming the shepherd of a new Israel, the new people of God. As the chapter continues, Mark will show his readers that Jesus could satisfy both the spiritual and the physical needs of the crowd. He will provide food for the people just as God had provided “manna” for the Israelites as they wandered in the desert.
Today’s reading offers three significant messages:
♦ Jesus revealed the awesome compassion and providence of God.
♦ We, the Church, are like this crowd, always seeking and finding Jesus Christ.
♦ Jesus showed the qualities that anyone in a position of leadership must have.
For our shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings.
1. How do I respond when my children, family and friends interrupt my rest? What do I feel toward them?
2. When I see someone in need, do I come out of my shell to reach out to them? Explain.

Brief commentary
