Careening down Highway 16 toward Jasper, doing 180 km/hr in the pouring rain, Justin Wiesinger wondered if he was thinking straight. The young man had been going through highs and lows, caught up in paranoia and the belief that he was the hero in an incredible adventure. He was racing to save an old friend caught in a flood.
Except he knew this was probably all in his imagination, a product of his bipolar disorder.
He tried to reason with himself. “Justin, think this through. Is anybody actually in danger? Probably not. I’ll go to Miette Hot Springs. I’ll probably be arrested. I’ll probably be able to talk my way out of this,” the 25-year-old recalls. “My mind was fighting to come out of this manic high.”
Wiesinger is sharing his story of living with a mental illness as he prepares to release his first CD, “Set Me Free,” at a local café tomorrow.
The St. Albert resident originally wrote the songs for himself but now hopes that, by sharing
them, he’ll help others going through similar difficulties.
His own troubles began in grade 12, six years ago, when he experienced his first manic high and was admitted to hospital. His diagnosis: bipolar type 1.
There are different types of bipolar disorder, a mood disorder that can see people experiencing episodes of mania, hypomania and major depression. Mania is an unusually good mood, where people may feel extremely energetic and unrealistically confident. Hypomania is a less severe form of mania.
Once Wiesinger was diagnosed, he was prescribed medication, but says it took a toll, with side effects such as wanting to sleep for up
to 20 hours a day. He tried a vitamin supplement instead and took it for several years, with ups and downs along the way.
Then came Jasper and the disastrous drive, nearly three years ago.
Before Wiesinger could straighten out his thinking on that rain-slicked road, he rolled his car. It flipped over once, twice, he’s not quite sure how many times, and landed on its side.
“Somehow, through this chaos, I had my seatbelt on, which is a miracle. All I remember was glass shattering. My car finally stopped and I was hanging sideways.”
Pushing past the airbag and broken glass, he climbed out the passenger door and took off running, thinking that if he didn’t run, his heart would explode. Police eventually caught up with him and shot him with a Taser.
Wiesinger landed back in psychiatric care, emerging from the hospital with new drugs and the need to regain the trust of his family. He’s working on that, he says, by taking responsibility for his actions and taking his mom’s advice to enrol at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to study film.
At NAIT, he started to open up about his struggle with bipolar disorder, working with classmates to make a documentary about it.
The road is still bumpy at times, Wiesinger admits. The new medication made him gain
weight and feel emotionless, but he’s worked with doctors to reduce the dosage, he’s lost 60 pounds and he’s cut out triggers such as alcohol, caffeine and not enough sleep.
His faith in God helps. So does the support of his family and friends.
“It’s so easy to make yourself the victim. It’s my pain, and I have to own this. I’ve got to get
better on my own terms,” says Wiesinger. “But you need relationships and people who’ve got your back to wrestle through stuff with, even if it’s painful things.”
“I’ve got to get better on my own terms. But you need relationships and people who’ve got your back...”

The race is onSUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Alberta Premier Jim Prentice met with the Lieutenant Governor to drop the writ on Tuesday morning, k icking off a 28-day election campaign ending with a vote on May 5.
“I came back to polit ics because Albertans were disappointed in polit ics and so was I,” said Prentice making the announcement surrounded by PC candidates at the Crestwood Hall in west Edmonton.
He added his government wil l be “ frugal, practical and focussed on front-line services.”
Prentice is now hitt ing the road, with the PC Leader’s bus making stops in Spruce Grove, Edson and Hinton before reaching Prentice’s hometown of Grande Cache Tuesday night.
The Wildrose, Alberta NDP and Liberal campaigns are a lso a l l
ramping up. Crit ics have cal led the election i l legal as Alberta has a f ixed election law stating the vote must be held in spring 2016. Prentice has said the law al lows an early vote, which is required because of the “tough” impact of Budget 2015, which proposes massive tax increases and def icit budgeting during a period of low oi l prices. The budget a lso proposes cuts to health care and education funding.
Prentice added Albertans wil l 10 years from no longer be held “hostage” by f luctuating oi l prices because, v ia innovation, “we are better than that.”
Elections Alberta has a $28-mil lion budget for the election. The 2012 Alberta election, which saw the Tory’s form their 12th consecutive majority government, cost over $13.6 mil l ion.

Iwas at an event recently where the guest speaker talked about the impact
of the non-profit sector in the community. He spoke about how much revenue is brought in and how many people are employed by this sector. I was surprised to learn that the non-profit sector is larger and more important than the oil and gas sector in Canada. He suggested that because of our impact in the community we should rename ourselves. After all, what other sector refers to itself by what it’s not? Grocery stores don’t call themselves “not furniture stores.” This negative naming creates an expectation that non-profits should not be profitable and has created a severe disadvantage compared to other sectors in how money is raised, how it gets spent and who profits
from success. Therefore, a better name, he said, is the “social profit sector.” In response, there were knowing nods and even applause from the audience of “social profit sector” staff, board and supporters.
After listening to this inspirational keynote, I thought of the “social profits” in my community. Many struggle with meeting increased demand for services with inconsistent funding. There is a misperception in this sector about what successful fund development programming is. It’s not relying on government
to provide support to run our programs; it’s having balanced, strategic and diversified funding sources. But to be successful, we need to change our perception of our organizations. We are not “non” anything. We provide services and supports to our communities that business and government cannot. We are profitable in so many ways.
If profit is a measure of value created, then the reality is that most charities are immensely profitable from both net revenue and impact perspectives. The real value of a charity is in the value it creates for society on a daily basis: feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, conquering diseases or preventing family violence. We need to invest in our people, programs, places and, yes, even fundraising. And
we need people to see the return on investment that the “social profits” in this community create.
Charities have access to stories and images capable of inspiring and motivating people on a massive scale. We deal with moving life and death situations and inspirational achievements. If we can’t present the work we do compellingly, with a passion that inspires action, then we are doing something terribly wrong. We need to write about it brilliantly; photograph, design and package it superbly; and be innovative and creative enough to present it in a way that will captivate, thrill and inspire. We need to get out of the “non” thinking that this sector has become enmeshed in and believe in the profits we create and share.

Last Week: Mission Fun and Games
Well, the audit came in. Correction: The review of expenses by those not considered professionals in the world of
audits was presented to council. There is little doubt that clearer policy and
procedures for our council’s expenses are needed. There is much uncertainty around this topic, and council’s approach is costing our community money and challenging the integrity of every member.
City Manager Patrick Draper presented administration’s initial findings. He had engaged three teams to complete this work. One work team comprised four professionals to do the expense review, a second team of four professionals worked on the process side, and a three-person oversight team was tasked with meeting with the two review teams to ensure their work was thorough.
In addition, a data room was set up and kept under lock and key throughout the process.
Two hundred and forty three hours were spent by the three teams made up of 11 professional staff from the City of St. Albert.
The City’s current career opportunities suggest that a mid-level manager working for the City works a 72-hour compressed bi-weekly work week and earns an average salary of $90,000 per annum.
This process then cost approximately $48 per hour of professional staff time. At 243 hours so far, the total expended on this pointed exercise is almost $12,000 and counting.
Rather than making this an exercise or building better clarity in the future around expenses, the decision was made to go the muddy past-tense route.
It is, however, proving to be entertaining. We get to see who likes to make more photocopies than others and who likes to eat on their way to conferences.
Now that all the items are public, councillors will get to provide a short explanation to justify each.
Councillor Hughes, for example, made sure everyone knew she had purchased a Kenneth Cole briefcase at Costco rather than a jacket.
We’re sure a simple word or sentence could easily explain most items.
But here we are.Let’s get this done and move on. Yes, it’s
important to bring clarity going forward. But in the meantime, it sure is petty.

The bright lights are callingBARRY BAILEYSt. Albert Leader
We all sing in the shower or play our guitar in the basement, dreaming of the bright lights and adoring fans. The first step in the journey to the big stage just might be the St. Albert Idol talent search.
The singing competition, presented by Visionary College and the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, will award over $3,000 in prizes, including video and recording packages.
In its 12th year, St. Albert Idol has “discovered” local talents like Jessy Mossop, Julia Nicholson and Hailey Benedict, all who have gone on to award-winning careers. The singing contest is open to ages five and up.
“I really love this event. I really enjoy seeing the talent coming out of our community,” says organizer, Martha Livingstone of Visionary College. “The unexpected talent.”
In her 12th year as organizer, Livingstone has been scouring the community for the past three months searching out singers by holding live auditions at Visionary College and accepting video submissions. Two hundred submissions have been received so far, with that number whittled down to about 40 by our press time.
There is still time to enter. Either email a YouTube video link before April 13th to
[email protected] or attend the last qualifying event tomorrow,
April 10, at 6 p.m. at Visionary College.
Call ahead at 780-460-4430 to get your name on the list. Qualifying applicants will perform during the semi-finals on April 17th or 18th, and the finals will be held April 19th at the St. Albert Lifestyle Expo and Sale at Servus Credit Union Place. The winners will be determined by audience voting. As long as you haven’t previously won St. Albert Idol, you’re eligible to enter.
“The biggest thing is getting an opportunity to perform,” says Livingstone. “I always tell people to look at it as a fun thing – to get in front of an audience that
hasn’t heard you perform. It’s about having fun, and it’s good life training.”
The bright lights of fame and fortune are calling. What are you waiting for?
Visit the Idol Facebook page at: facebook.com/StAlbertIdol.Lifestyle Expo hours:Friday, Apr. 17, 2-9 p.m.Saturday, Apr. 18, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.Sunday, Apr. 19, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Council Expense Audit and Process Review
Mayor Crouse put a motion forward calling for a greater area of the
proposal to be kept as commerciallands rather than residential. Area “A”
as shown on the map below shallbe commercial and not residential.
The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the Council Expense Audit
and Process Review that was requested by Council and
conducted by Administration. A review of each Council
member’s expenses during the current term as well as three years worth of expenses for
the Mayor (to include his time as Chair of the Capital Region
Board) were also included. The recommendations include
receiving this report as information and that Council
members provide written comments regarding findings by
April 17 to the City Manager.
“City administration has done an excellent job in reviewing expenses and making recommendations to ensure errors do not happen in the future.”
— Gilles Prefontaine
The Mayor and Councillors will prepare and submit comments to
the City Manager.
An area will now be developed for further discussion and approval.

While protein is used to build andrepair muscle tissue and promoteneurological function, it also canencourage fat loss, deliver essentialnutrients and improve metabolicactivity. Because protein can increasesatiety better than some other foods, italso can be a good way to curb cravingsand help cut out some extra calories.Although protein is an importantcomponent of a nutritious diet, somewomen do not consume enough of itor even know what “enough protein”entails. According to a recent survey, 50percent of women ages 18 to 50 do notknow if they’re getting enough protein.
HOW MUCH PROTEIN?How much protein a woman needsisn’t an exact science. It is recommendsthat all men and women over the ageof 19 consume .8 grams of proteinper kilogram of body weight, but thatnumber can be customized dependingon how active a person is. Becausehigh-protein foods also may be high insaturated fats, it’s best to choose proteinsources that include essential aminoacids and are relatively low in saturatedfat. Such sources include fish, roastedchicken and soybeans.
MUSCLE BUILDING PROPERTIESMany people consume protein tobuild muscle. By consuming adequateamounts of protein, women can retainlean muscle mass and keep their bodiesstrong. Physically active women may
need more protein than women who aresedentary to help fuel the recovery ofmuscles after their workouts. Musclesactually are built outside of the gym.During physical activity, muscle tissueis torn and broken down. Amino acidsin protein will help repair muscle tissue
to grow back stronger.
FENDS OFF HUNGER PANGSProtein takes longer to break downin the body and digest compared tocarbohydrates, which usually producequick punches of energy. A longer
digestion window means you can feelfuller for a longer amount of time andsteer clear of excess calories. Slowerdigestion may also help stabilize energylevels.
PROTEIN HELPS BURN FATProtein has the highest thermic effectof food, or TEF, which is the amount ofcalories it takes your body to processand utilize a nutrient. This can meanyour body actually uses a quarter to35 percent of the caloric energy fromconsumed protein just to digest it.Those who eat more protein duringthe day may see faster weight loss.Furthermore, excess protein consumedwill not cause women to bulk up, as thebody will excrete whatever it does notuse as fuel.
PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTSMuch of the protein a healthy bodyneeds can be gotten through food. However, some women like proteinshakes to replace a meal or provideextra fuel after a workout. Two ofthe most readily available proteinpowders include whey concentrate, afast-absorbing pre- and post-workoutprotein source, and casein, a proteinthat can be used as a meal or rightbefore bed because it can take five toseven hours to fully breakdown in thebody.Protein can be the missingcomponent in a woman’s healthy dietand fitness plan.

Economy down, needs for services increaseMARCIE GRAYSt. Albert Leader
New clients are usually a good thing. But St. Albert’s food bank is not
celebrating as it sees more people walking through the door, many of them first-time users.
Demand was up significantly in January, February and March, compared to the same time last year, says Suzan Krecsy, executive director of St. Albert Food Bank and Community Village.
It’s hard to be certain of the reason, she says, but falling oil prices and the weakening economy are at least partly to blame, as some of the newcomers say they’ve lost their jobs up north or in oil-related industries in Edmonton. Use of Fort McMurray’s food bank is skyrocketing, notes Krecsy.
In January, the St. Albert Food Bank served 29 families who had never before requested help. Overall, 146 families visited the food bank in January, compared to 124 families the year before. February and March saw similar increases.
Part of the increase, Krecsy says, is seasonal. Food banks tend to help more clients after Christmas, when people
are facing big bills and January rent increases.
“It’s very distressing. It’s overwhelming – very stressful. That’s why we have the social worker here. She can sit down with them and get a plan of action. They think that food is going to be the answer to everything and it’s not.”
A need for groceries is often linked with a need for counselling, she adds. The food bank refers clients to Stop Abuse in Families (SAIF), a St. Albert society that helps families dealing with domestic violence.
SAIF’s executive director, Doreen Slessor, says she hasn’t seen an increase in the number of people needing counselling – yet.
“If the food bank is busy now, I would anticipate we’ll see that busyness in
a couple of months because families will first be so worried about basic necessities. Then the stress and pressures of not having money or having to use the food bank might start to compound, and we might start to see an
increase in family violence.”
Slessor’s been with SAIF since 2005 and says she’s seen the boom-and-bust cycle. When times are good, domestic violence tends to be linked with excess: too much money, booze and drugs. When the economy drops, families that are already stressed experience the added pressure of suddenly having to go without.
At the food bank, it’s an unfortunate coincidence that as the need increases, donations drop.
Krecsy says St. Albert residents are
extremely generous. But starting in April and continuing until fall, the bank receives fewer donations because people become busy with summer holidays, and students – who collect huge amounts of supplies during food drives – are out of school.
You can help by dropping off non-perishables at the bank on Bellerose Drive. Canned vegetables, in particular, are in short supply.
SAIF is holding its Red Shoe Gala this Saturday, but ticket sales are closed. Slessor says its biggest fundraiser, an annual golf tournament in July, welcomes new participants and sponsors.
The society has a new fundraising goal this year: it’s hoping to increase the number of monthly donors. Right now 10 people donate each month, and SAIF’s 2015 goal is to have 200 people giving $20 a month.
Such stable and predictable funding would make “a world of difference to us,” ensuring SAIF can provide counselling to all who come calling, Slessor says.
To become a monthly donor, go to www.stopabuse.ca and click on “donate.”
“It’s very distressing.... They think that food is going to be the answer to everything and it’s not.”

St. Albert’s Eek! Fest announces celebrity guestsLEADER STAFFSt. Albert Leader
The business of pop culture is growing so fast it’s able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Thankfully, St. Albert has a role to play in that growth and is not sitting on the pop culture sidelines.
The Calgary Expo heads into its tenth year next weekend and is expecting more than 100,000 attendees through the turnstiles. Though it may not grow to that size, St. Albert’s Eek! Fest is in its second year and growing from the same humble roots.
To fuel that growth, the organizer of Eek! Fest 2015 just announced that Caity Lotz and Adrian Pasdar will be this year’s special guests as part of the overall show, which will encompass four halls (two fields and two arenas) at Servus Place in St. Albert on May 30 and 31.
Arrow fans will know Lotz as Sara Lance, the first Black Canary, and one of the stars of the upcoming DC spin-off show, rumoured to be called The Brave and the Bold, on the CW network. Pasdar is known to fans as General Glenn Talbot on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nathan Petrelli from Heroes.
On Arrow, Lotz plays Sara Lance, Oliver Queen’s girlfriend, who apparently drowns during the shipwreck in the pilot episode, only to return later as the Black Canary and then die again in season three.
“We know Arrow is a very popular show, and after the great reaction to having Stephen Amell at Eek! Fest last year, we wanted to bring back another member of the cast,” said Eek! Fest general manager, Rob LeLacheur.
After her character was apparently killed in season three of Arrow, fans are trying to figure out how Lotz will work into a new spin-off set in the DC universe, also starring Brandon Routh as Atom
and Victor Garber as Firestorm. The new so-far-untitled show is planned to debut on the CW network in 2016, possibly as a mid-season show.
In addition to appearing on Arrow, Lotz has appeared in several episodes of Mad Men and the 2012 movie The Pact and is currently involved in the upcoming movie 400
Days, which is still filming. She will be at Eek! Fest on
Saturday, May 30th. Pasdar will appear on Sunday,
May 31st. As Nathan Petrelli on Heroes, he was a reluctant hero who had the ability to f ly at amazing speeds, while as General Talbot on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., he instead helps hunt down gifted people and is often in conf lict with the agents themselves.
His character is also known to constantly be on the hunt for The Incredible Hulk.
Due to the enduring popularity
of Heroes, the show is returning as a limited mini-series later this year. No word yet on whether Pasdar will reprise his role, but fans have high hopes.
Pasdar is also known to fans for
his off-screen work on Marvel’s animated TV shows. He frequently voices Tony Stark, the Invincible Iron Man, in shows such as Marvel’s Avengers Assemble.
Weekend passes are available for Eek! Fest, ranging in price from $8 for children to $25 for adults. They can be purchased at www.theeek.com

First in, last outBRITTANY KUSTRA Special to the Leader
I’ll give you three guesses as to who has been first into the NABI office and last out over the last couple weeks.
If you guessed one of our accountants, you’re correct! This time of year is the busiest for the several accountants with offices in our two NABI buildings. Both personal and business tax deadlines are looming, and filing your taxes is just one way to get organized for spring.
For many entrepreneurs, organization in your work and personal life is intertwined, especially for those who work out of home offices.
So, just in time for spring cleaning, here are a few tips to stay organized for the rest of 2015:• Go paperless. You might not be
able to rid yourself of hard copies altogether just yet, but keeping things digital has an advantage. A click of the mouse is quicker than a complex filing system. For the messiest of business owners, there’s always the helpful “search” function!
• Don’t do anything before you get organized. That’s right. Hit the pause button on your to-do list and don’t cross anything off until you attack that huge pile of papers on your desk.
• Too overwhelmed to do it all at once? That’s alright, it’s not for everyone. Instead, set aside an hour each morning to organize the office before you start up your laptop.
• Location, location, location. No, not your office location. We’re talking proximity. Keep your most-used office supplies, tools and folders within arm’s length, and file the rest away.
• Set a quarterly calendar reminder to reorganize – again. Trust me, your office will be messy again by then.
• Ask for a little help. There’s no shame in admitting your faults. After all, you can’t be a business genius, manager extraordinaire, killer salesperson AND skilled in organizing, right? There are plenty of professional organizers out there to hire on a contract or short-term basis.
Brittany Kustra is communications and marketing coordinator for the
Northern Alberta Business Incubator. Need a little help staying organized?
Visit www.nabi.ca to find out how NABI can help.
Don’t fall victim to identity theftSUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – If you’re like many Canadians who shop online, you’re “very concerned” about identity theft and a national survey suggests those fears are justified. The percentage of people who’ve been the victims of identity theft due to online fraud jumped from 6% to 16% over the past year.
And according to a Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) of Canada survey, 32% of Canadians have been a victim of financial fraud at some point in their life.
If you’re the victim of identity theft, restoring your credit and good name can be time consuming and confusing.
“The strongest foot forward one can take is to learn how to not to become a victim in the first place,” says CPA David Malamed, a forensic and dispute resolution partner with Grant Thornton LLP in Toronto. He offers the following tips:
1. Shop on secure sites. “Brand-name sites are typically safe while the security of mom-and-pop type sites may be questionable,” he warns. According to the Canadian Consumer Handbook, here’s how to tell if a website is secure:
• The web address begins with https:// as the ‘s’ indicates the site is secure.
• You can see a small icon -- often a lock or key -- in your browser window. The lock should be in a locked position and the key should be unbroken.
2. Protect your PINs and passwords. Have a unique and random password for each site we regularly visit and change those passwords regularly. Remember them. If you enter one password after another until the right one works on a particular site, “all of those failed attempts
are being recorded, most likely at the site you’re trying to enter,” says Malamed. An online password manager can help you securely keep track of and manage your many passwords.
3. Have two computers. Use one for surfing and the second for business and banking. By investing in a tablet or laptop for surfing, you can visit websites and click on links and downloads without the risk
of losing valuable information if you’re exposed to malicious software. If using an older computer to surf, delete your personal information from the hard drive using overwrite software or destroy and replace the drive.
4. Learn how to identify phishing scams. Spelling and grammatical errors are one way to identify e-mails sent from scammers pretending to be from a legitimate retailer, bank, organization or government agency. Have a look at where the mail is coming from. What appears to be an e-mail from a legitimate bank, for example, may really be from a Hotmail or other account.
5. Check your credit report annually. ou can get a copy of your personal credit report from Equifax or TransUnion. Visit consumerhandbook.ca/en/topics/financial/credit-reporting to find out how to get immediate online access to a report for free or how to get a free copy.
6. Reconcile credit card and bank statements regularly. In his work in forensic accounting investigation, Malamed is surprised by the number of credit card statements that contain items that have been incorrectly billed. “If you see charges you don’t recognize, a little investigation could definitely be worthwhile.”
