Dear Parishioners, This Sunday, the fourth and final Sunday of Advent, we hear a Gospel reading (Luke 1:26-38) that prepares us for the birth of the Messiah. Luke relates how the angel Gabriel came to Mary and announced she had been chosen to give birth to “the Son of the Most High”. If we were asked who the main character in that Gospel reading is, we might answer “Mary”. She is the one visited by an angel, the one asked to give birth to the Messiah, and the one whose response is critical if the story is to move forward. However, we might say that the angel Gabriel is the main character. If he did not make his announcement to Mary, she would have remained an ordinary woman in Nazareth, forgotten by history. Gabriel makes the difference; he sets things in motion. If we carefully examine the account in Luke, we realize that neither Mary nor Gabriel is the main character. The main character is God. God is the one who initiates the action, moves the story forward, and directs the angel to go to Mary. As Luke tells us, “the angel Gabriel was sent from God ... to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph .... and the virgin's name was Mary”. For she was the one that God had favored and filled with his grace. A fact recognized by the angel as he greeted her, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you". Mary then conceives because God sends the power of his Spirit upon her. Everything happens by the power and action of God. God is the main character in Sunday’s Gospel and through-out the Gospels of the coming Christmas Season. In fact, God is the main character throughout the scriptures; the story of God reaching out to his people. That story continues as God reaches out to us. We are people of faith, not because of what we have done, but because God has touched our lives in some way and brought us to faith. God is the main character in every story of salvation, including ours! God’s choice of Mary also reminds us that God has chosen us for roles in the continuing drama of salvation. The sacraments that give us our identity as Christians also give us the roles that God expects us to fulfill. Our role, our mission, is to hasten the coming of God’s kingdom of love, justice, and peace by living as Jesus’ faithful disciples. God, who cast Mary for a starring role in the drama of salvation, has chosen us to be part of the cast that continues to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel and helps to make Jesus Christ present in our day. (From Looking to Sunday by Fr. Tom Iwanowski).
From us all on staff here at St. Aloysius Parish, many blessings
to you and your family & best wishes for a Joyous and Healthy
Christmas Season, filled with God’s
Presence and Peace. Ed Karpinski Pastoral Associate, Faith Formation

THINK GREEN
In today’s gospel when the angel Gabriel told Mary she would conceive and bear the son of God, she responded “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word”. Let us respond to God’s calling to care for and give thanks for all of God’s creation. In appreciation of God’s many blessings, consider the following activities:
Weather permitting, take a peaceful walk-through nature on Christmas day. Enjoy the beauty of the sky, trees, plants, birds and animals. Later bundle up and take a stroll to admire the holiday lights in your neighborhood. Organize a caroling party via social media or Zoom which will reduce air pollution and keep your loved ones safe. Call and/or contact by social media relatives and friend, to share stories of Christmases past. Reflect on the greatest Christmas gift – Jesus - the Light of the World.
Happy Advent A Very Blessed and Merry Christmas The Green Team
Our Advent Giving Tree for Christmas, although very different this year due to the Covid Virus, was still very moving. St. Aloysius Parishioners continuously touch many lives with their generosity. The gift cards kept coming and coming. Thank you may seem inadequate for all that you have given out of love and sacrifice. Donations to our individual Parish families, along with the many organizations we give to, St. John’s, St. Catherine’s Infirmary, Little Sisters of the Poor, Oasis, Several Sources, St. Peter’s Orphanage etc. is very appreciative. Along with all this our Parish becomes closer, more bonded. May you and your families enjoy Blessed, Healthy and Peace Filled Holidays.
