St. Aloysius Parish Mission Statement

Christ. All are welcome to deepen their spiritual and

personal lives through active participation in weekly

Liturgy, the celebration of the Sacraments, Parish

ministries and community activities. Acknowledging

our incompleteness and our need for God’s grace, we

commit ourselves, through Baptism, to responding to

God’s call to become and grow as disciples of Jesus

Christ in our time. Jesus Christ is at the center of all of

our lives.

Dear Parishioners,

Today’s readings can be difficult to understand,

and because of this, there have been various

interpretations, some of which have not always been

kind.

I want to

share with you

some points of

view; let us see

today’s Gospel. It

begins with a

speech of Jesus in

which he defines

the nature of the

message that he was bringing: “I came to bring fire to

the earth, and how I wish it were already

kindled!” (Luke 12:49). Let us remember that the

symbol of fire has many meanings and so it’s easy to

see how it could be interpreted in many ways.

In the Old Testament, for example, fire was

often seen as judgment, and so, many conservatives

interpret this as Jesus saying that he will bring

judgment on the earth, and with the sound of the

second half of the statement, that judgment will

probably not be good. But I think other interpretations

fit in better with the overall pattern of Jesus’ thought as

we have been reading him.

Fire is also the symbol of the Holy Spirit. If

you remember, the Spirit came down in the form of

tongues of fire on the apostles. The Spirit, as we have

seen, is the gift of God to us which keeps God alive in

us after Jesus’ ascension. But, to get the Spirit to us,

Jesus has to go through his death and resurrection.

Could that be why he says: how I wish it were already

kindled”? I think so.

Now, the pastoral question for us today is:

How is this fire that we all received in our baptism and

reaffirm in confirmation? Is my fire alive, with strong

flame and lighting others?

I guess that Jesus wants that my fire burn with

love for others’ lives, creating a faithful and shining

community.

Blessings,

Fr. Edinson E. Ramirez

MEETING EMERGENCY NEEDS WITH DIGNITY An Interfaith Anti-Hunger Network Serving Those in Need Since 1980

Be a SUMMER

HUNGER BUSTER!

While summertime means relaxed days for many, it's

stressful for food insecure families who lose access

to Federally-funded school meal programs. In NJ,

only 20% of children who receive free and reduced-

price meals during the school year are enrolled in a

summer feeding program.

MEND's "Summer Hunger Busters" program is

providing supplemental summer food packages to

families of school-age children in Essex County.

Please support MEND's Summer Hunger Busters

program by visiting our website:

http://www.mendnj.org/ to donate, or

email [email protected] for information about

hosting a food drive to support this program.

So far, MEND has received over $13,000 for

Summer Hunger Busters, but we need an additional

$5,000 to supply packages to ALL our families with

school-aged children.

Thank you so much from everyone in our MEND

family. We look forward to serving our communities

together with you.
