February 19, 2017

Dear Parishioners,

In this Sunday's Gospel (Matthew 5:38-48), Jesus

commands us to "offer no resistance to one who is

evil...turn the other cheek...love your enemies...pray for

those who persecute you." And if that were not enough,

Jesus sums it all up by saying "So be perfect as your

heavenly Father is perfect."

Hearing that, we might think Jesus is asking us to do the

impossible. The only way we can do what Jesus asks is

with help, with guidance, and with encouragement! The

only way we can fulfill what many feel is the most

demanding of all the commands in the Gospel is with the

help of the Holy Spirit. The more often we place ourselves

in the presence of God, the more often we pray, the more

often we gather with the Church, the more often we share

the Eucharist, then the more we are filled with the Spirit of

God who transforms us and gives us the strength to live the

Gospel – the strength to even love our enemies.

Can you imagine if the people in Washington D.C. and in

the media would also strive to live by these standards? If

people treated those on the “other side” with dignity and

respect, and remembering that ALL lives matter – poor and

rich, pre-born and elderly, people of all races, nationalities,

religions and genders?!

However, the love that Jesus requires of his followers is

not a feeling but rather a matter of action. It is a matter of

doing good even though it is not deserved. It is a matter of

not repaying injury with injury, insult with insult, hurt with

hurt. It is a matter of deciding that we will act as God acts

toward those who make themselves his enemies by their sin

and evil. God continues to do good for them. God blesses

the saint and the sinner, the good and the bad, the deserving

and the undeserving, the admirable and the detestable.

Certainly the ministry of Jesus is proof of God’s all-

embracing love and care.

As children of God, as disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to

strive to follow the example set by God himself. God does

not discriminate in doing good. God is not selective in

showing love. God lets his love shine on all. “So,” as

Jesus tells us “be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is

perfect.” We can strive toward this as our goal of a true

successful life, but it requires action and requires a decision

to do good even for the undeserving. Seem impossible? It

only becomes possible with the help of the Holy Spirit and

the model of Love as lived and taught by Jesus himself.

(excepts from Looking to Sunday© by Rev. Thomas B.

Iwanowski)

Let us thank God for all we are blessed with living in this

wonderful country of ours. Let us honor the Christian

principles of our Founding Fathers by honoring God in all

things we do each day, and in loving our neighbor and our

enemies as ourselves. Truly there can be no greater success

story if we follow these principles. Amen!

Wishing you and your family a peaceful and patriotic

President’s Day! With Christian love,

BENEFIT PASTA SUPPER

JANUARY 13, 2017 THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

THANK YOU!

TO ALL FOR MAKING THE EVENING ONE TO REMEMBER! We were prepared to fill the gym comfortably and to be ready to serve our guests. We achieved our goal, plus much more. We had sold about 175 tickets to the supper prior to the evening. The evening of the supper so many people arrived to share the meal, make donations or both. The response was over-whelming in attendance, in assistance and in dona-tions. No one expected the turnout that we had. The spirit of the evening was so evident you could feel it. People jumped in to help!

Our food was donated by local restaurants: Forte;

Stephanie’s; LaFamilia; Calandra; Angeloni; Russillo;

Divina; Genaro Cucino; Cedar Grill and Pizza and

Sandwich Barn. Our local supermarkets contributed

to our food items and contributed toward anything

needed. Caldwell Fire Department provided funds for

paper supplies and The Party Supply Store added to

making the evening great. Let’s remember our local

businesses when we shop. After the evening was over

and everything back in place we realized we had

raised $7,100.00 for the families. WOW!
