From Father Brian’s Desk Recent Celebrations This past week was a very busy time for the St. Alphonsus community! On Saturday, March 11th, our 8th Grade students celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Andrew Wypych. The students from our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School and our St. Alphonsus Reli-gious Education Program were excited about the celebration of Confirmation.

We also had the pleasure of having Fr. Mike Knotek preach at the

4:00 p.m. & 9:00 a.m. Masses last weekend to prepare us for the Lemont Len-ten Mission on March 6th & 7th. Fr. Knotek spoke about sin, the journey of Lent and finding God during difficult times. The Lemont Lenten Mission was a great success and I believe it was a great opportunity to learn more about our faith and the season of Lent. St. Patrick’s Day

This year St. Patrick’s Day will fall on a Friday during Lent and I was waiting for a number of requests for dispensation. Thankfully, we received notice from Cardinal Cupich about this celebration: “St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, falls on a Friday this year. Cardinal Cupich has given a general dispensation to Catholics from abstaining from meat on this day. Instead, Catholics in the Archdiocese of Chicago who choose to make use of this gen-eral dispensation are asked to substitute another form of penance for the Len-ten Friday abstinence.”

Lent updates

1. The St. Alphonsus Women’s Club is sponsoring its Annual Lenten

Reflection on Sunday, March 12th at 12:00 p.m. in the Church Hall. This year’s presenter is Fr. Patrick McDevitt and the theme is “The Power of Relationships and the Power of Community for Transfor-mation and Service”. Fr. Pat has an extensive background in the

areas of education, ministry and counseling. Please join us for an inspiring afternoon! 2. We continue to celebrate 7:30 a.m. Daily Morning Mass in the Church

due to the increased number of people that attend Daily Mass during the season of Lent. Stations of the Cross are celebrated on Friday

evenings during Lent at 7:00 p.m.. The Stations of the Cross prayer service offers the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Jesus on his

final hours before his death on the cross. Please join us as we offer various opportunities of prayer during Lent.

3. The Lenten project for St. Alphonsus Church this year will be to support Sacred Heart Mission Church in Hopkins Park, Illinois. Sacred Heart Mission is home to a number of parishioners living below the poverty level. Even though the community is poor, it is alive in faith. We will collect household and personal products during the season of Lent to help meet their need.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN… 7TH GRADE? After getting a new appreciation for the Bible and Jesus as the fulfillment of the promises made in the Old Testament through the DVD-based Encounter series the first half of the year, our 7th Graders have been spending the 2nd half on Morality and preparing to enter into the season of Lent. They are looking at how the 10 Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Virtues play in their lives. To help her students enter into the Lent season, Mrs. Kaye students created Lenten Jars that help guide them to make their own sacrifices for each day during Lent. Each stick in their jar has six ideas to do during a week in Lent. Students came up with things to give up, chores to take on, readings and reflections to do, dona-tions of time or material things, etc. They are also coordinating a service project to benefit the Sacred Heart Mission in Hopkins. They placed collection boxes in the back of the church and in the RE Building hallway to collect different items each week during Lent. They created posters to promote their project.

CONFIRMATION 50 of our 51 confirmandi made final preparations last Sunday for their Confirmation this Saturday. They took part in the final liturgical rite, the Call to Continuing Conversion, with their sponsors split between the 9:00 and 11Masses; they took part in the practice for the Confirmation liturgy, and spent the afternoon in prayer, reflection, and activities. We thank Meredith Mathias and Ralphie Loisi, who were confirmed last year, for their “Witness Talks”… sharing how their faith helps them in high school, and offering some advice. Please keep our newly confirmed in your prayers as they attempt to integrate their faith into their lives on a daily basis.

GRADES 3-5 FAMILY SESSION – TRACK A

Next Sunday (19th), we will have the Winter/Spring Family Session. Parents will join their children during their regularly scheduled class time. We will start out by assembling in the chapel.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION — SEVEN MONTHS OLD

Hi! I’m so grateful that you are still praying for me. I’m seven months old, but I’m already developing wrinkles. It’s because of all the time I spend floating in the water inside my mother’s womb. I hear my Mommy talking to other people and I recognize her voice. I love it when she talks to me. She makes beautiful sounds. Not only do I hear, but I use three other senses — I see, taste and touch too. Smell is the only sense I don’t use yet. I’m putting on weight so I will be healthy when I enter the world. Please keep up your prayers.

• Learn the meaning of the mysterious figures and events in the book of Revelation. • Discover how the Mass is really heaven on earth. • Learn about the Antichrist and his destruction. • See the Second Coming of Christ and the Final Judgment in the context of history. • Learn what will happen at the end of time and the establishment of a new heaven and a new earth.

Deacon Dan will be our guide on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm beginning on March 23rd. The 11 sessions will take us through Lent and the Easter season to June 8th.

Let us know if you are interested in joining us. 630-257-2371
