The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

The Second Vatican Council renewed the Anointing of the Sick as a sacrament of healing and strength, rather than only as a preparation for death. We invite any baptized person to receive the sacrament whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or physical condition, one who is preparing for surgery and those who are elderly. Blessed holy oil is used to anoint the forehead and hands of the sick person with these words, “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from your sin save you and raise you up.” In the New Testament, we read that Jesus paid particular attention to the sick

who were brought to Him, or who made their way to Him on their own like the lepers. Jesus laid hands on the ill and often used oil or even mud to indicate that He was bringing them relief.

Why should the journey be made during Mass? The changes instituted by Vatican II and the subsequent recommendations from the Catholic Bishops indicate that the rite for this sacrament should be accomplished not as a isolated ritual, but within a total pastoral ministry. That is why the ill, their caregivers, and others praying for them unite their prayers during this special Mass.

The Apostle James writes, “If one of you is ill, he should send for the elders of the Church, and they must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.”

The effects of the sacrament according to the Catechism include the following: “the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ”, “giving the anointed peace and courage to endure illness in a Christian manner”, “the forgiveness of sins if the sick person was not able to obtain it though the sacrament of penance”, “providing for the restoration of health” and “helping the sick person in the preparation for passing over to eternal life”.

Join us Saturday, October 27 for the Anointing of the Sick Mass at 11:00am

WATCH/VIDEOTALK: ANGELS ABOUT: In this compilation of three episodes from his classic television program, "Life is Worth Living.” Bishop Fulton Sheen delivers his thoughts on various elements of the Catholic Faith with his ever-present humor, animated presentation, and captivating mode of speaking. He explicates the nature of angels and the meaningful role they play in our world. TESTIMONIALS: “ Sheen talked about how angels can illuminate our minds in the way of truth and infuse good ideas almost like ESP, one mind to another. The overwhelming task I was doing went by fast while listening!!! His messages ring true for TODAY’S SOCIETAL NEEDS!” LISTEN/TALK: OUR LADY OF FATIMA AND THE FALL OF COMMUNISM ABOUT: Craig Turner, a well-respected journalist and researcher, shares the unmistakable connection between the apparitions of our Blessed Mother at Fatima in 1917 and the fall of Communism in Europe more than seventy years later. This talk is sure to provide a greater awareness of the motherly help and protection that Mary offers mankind through her powerful intercession. The importance of entrusting ourselves to her care has never been so evident as it is today. TESTIMONIAL: “WOW... I AM A CRADLE CATHOLIC…12 yer of Catholic Education, and I learned things I had never heard before. I highly recommend this book for all. I did not realize there was so much religious persecution involved in the wars. This makes me want to study with my eyes wide open, and as an adult, truly research my Catholic faith. I believe God has called me to this for a reason. I have heard, and will prayerfully answer.” WATCH/AnimatedFilm: THE DAY THE SUN DANCED (for Children with Guidance) 1917, three children experienced a great miracle. While herding a flock of sheep outside the tiny village of Fatima, Portugal, the Blessed Mother visited them, not once, but many times, telling the children great and wondrous secrets that would affect all of creation. The Day the Sun Danced is a children’s version of the inspiring true story of Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, whose great faith and courage brought the message of Our Lady of Fatima to the entire world. TESTIMONIAL: “WATCHED WITH 6YR AND 4YR OLD…I had been waiting to share this story with my kids. We lived in Portugal for two years and I was lucky to find an image of Our Lady of Fatima but until now, they did not know the story of why the image was so dear to me. Today, we finally were able to watch the film together and talk about some of the requests made by our Virgin Mary. My son was very scared about hell, he could not believe it was true. This film led us to many other topics, geography ( to show them Russia), government styles, the role of the Pope. I absolutely loved the film and the kids were very engaged the whole time.”

Please join us for an Evening of Prayer for Healing Our Church has been going through a crisis and as members of this body we are all suffering.

As St. Paul says: (1 Cor. 12:26) “If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it.” Our faith is being tested. We are members of the Catholic Church because we believe in Jesus Christ. We are called to stand up for our faith and need the support of one another. Together let us pray for

healing of those abused by clergy and for our Church so we can experience reconciliation and healing. We too need to join in and pray for the reparation of sins caused by some members

of our community.

A special evening of prayer will be held here at St. Alphonsus Liguori Wednesday, October 10.

Please join us for all or some of these prayers:

6:45 pm Recitation of the Rosary 7:00 pm Mass of Reparation and Healing 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm Holy Hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction

Beyond the Parish . . . Veterans Card Signing Campaign— Show a hospitalized veteran you truly care on Veterans Day! Do you know how many veterans we have receiving treatment at the Jesse Brown VA facility who have no one who cares? Join us on October 12 from 7:00am to 1:00pm by spending 5-7 minutes of your time jotting some heartfelt thanks to a veteran for their service and sacrifice for Veterans Day. A thank you shown with love and care heals the heart, if not the physical ailment. Join us at St. Peter’s Church, 110 West Madison Street, Chicago (in the loop) Questions?
