SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Junípero Serra; Canada Day Wednesday: St. Thomas Thursday: Independence Day Friday: St. Elizabeth of Portugal; St. Anthony Zaccaria; First Friday Saturday: St. Maria Goretti; Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday
Message from the Pastor Welcome to St. Ambrose we are so happy that you could join us today to celebrate The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Those of us who are procrastinators will identify with today’s Gospel. We have the best of intentions, but somehow our ‘to do’ list for today keeps getting pushed out until tomorrow, and the next day and the next week. There is always an excuse, or something more urgent that needs to be done. The things that we do not prioritize get relegated to the bottom of the list, and sometimes drop off altogether, so that they never get done. In Luke’s Gospel, when Jesus invites people to follow him, he gets some similar responses—I’ll be right with you, , I’ll add it to my ‘to do’ list. ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me…’ The excuses these people give are far from feeble: one wants to go and bury his or her father first, another simply wants to say goodbye to their family. But Jesus has what sound like very harsh words for these predicaments. There is no time, there can be no excuses, this is more important. Discipleship is a path that requires sacrifice. It is a path that means living in a new and different way. Rather that focusing on the past, we need to move forward and get on with the task. Jesus tells us: ‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. ‘There is work to be done, and it cannot wait. People who are hungry, homeless, marginalized or suffering cannot wait. The earth cannot wait. Our ‘to do’ lists need to be shaken up. If we are to live as disciples, the time is not tomorrow, it is now.
Have a great week, enjoy the holiday and stay safe.

PASTOR’S MUSING A man sobering up from the night before is sitting through the Sunday sermon, finding it long and boring. Still feeling hung over and tired, he finally nods off. The preacher has been watching him all along, noticing his apparent hangover and is disgusted. At the end of the sermon, the preacher decides to make an example of him. He says to his congregation, “All those wishing to have a place in heaven, please stand.” The whole room stands up except, of course, the sleeping man. Then the preach-er says even more loudly, “And he who would like to find a place in hell please stand!” The weary man catching only the last part groggily stands up, only to find that he’s the only one standing. Confused and embarrassed he says, “I don’t know what we’re voting on here, Father, but it sure seems like you and me are the only ones standing for it!”

A Prayer for Hurricane Season O God, Master of this world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned
calm to the seas. We live in the shadow of danger over which we have no control. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from all storms that may harm us or our loved ones. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved mother, we ask you to watch over and protect us until we walk in the footsteps of
Your divine Son and reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

requests. Although many answer our call, the need is still great. Please remember the food baskets and poor boxes as you leave Church. The poor and needy are always among us. Thank you for caring.
PARKING – HELP! We know parking becomes more difficult during the season and even worse during the Carnival but we need your help. Please park only in designated parking spaces. Do not block entrances or exits. Please do not block the entrances to the basketball court, and leave the designated handicapped parking spaces for those who are truly handicapped!
