Dear Parishioners,

The healing power of Jesus is evident in today’s Gospel reading. His healing enables us to be restored in our spiritual lives, to turn away from sinfulness and selfishness.

However notice that while everyone searches for Jesus because of His healing power, Jesus is adamant about moving forward. He has a mission, and the mission defines everything for Him. It is the urgency of His mission that we must understand. And that mission is the spread of the Gospel.

Thanks to all those who worked so hard on the School Musical. We have a production this Sunday afternoon at 4 pm.

Next Sunday we will have a celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick at the 10:30 am Mass. If you or a family member is sick, of if you are feeling somewhat frail because of age, you are invited to come to this Mass to be anointed and to receive the powerful grace of the Sacrament.

Blessings to you all

Devotedly,

Father Gabe

Reflections on Today’s Readings

Focus: Through the Church, Jesus’ healing power is really present to the world. Although it is difficult to understand the mystery of human sickness and suffering, the Christian faith, through the cross of Christ, brings healing to sickness and meaning to suffering.

Liturgy of the Word: In today’s first reading, Job laments his difficult life. In the second reading, Saint Paul tells us that he is simply doing what he must, for it can be no other way for a disciple of Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus shows us both simple and profound acts of compassion as He continues His healing and preaching ministry throughout Galilee.

Masses: Sat: 5:30 p.m. Sun: 7:30 a.m. Sun: 9:00 a.m. Sun: 10:30 a.m. Sun: 12:00 NN. Sun: 7:30 p.m.

Celebrants: Msgr. Gonzales Fr. Tom Msgr. Vadakin Msgr. Gonzales Msgr. Cox Msgr. Cox

This Week: Saturday, February 7th/Sunday, February 8th Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Announcement Sunday In today’s readings, we are told, “He tells the number of the stars; he calls each by name.” Though we are many, we are one Church. God

calls each of us by name to offer our time, talents, and treasure to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Everything we have is a gift from God, which we are called upon to share. When we give generously, our life is most like His. You are the one who can provide parishes and schools with the resources they need. Your gift can be the one that allows a priest to serve communities in need. It can help a school make essential repairs for the safety of their students. It can enable parishioners to have a place to celebrate Mass. The strength of the Church is not in numbers, but in love. Your contribution, large or small, is the one that matters. During all Masses next weekend, we will conduct the in-pew process for the collection of gifts & pledges to this year’s appeal. God bless you for your generous response and support to those in need.

Please pray for those who have died, especially Carmen Pereira—her Funeral Service will take place

Monday, February 9th at American Martyrs—6 pm, Rosary; 6:30 pm, Mass. Celine Aziz, Barbara Steed, Doris Dempsey, and Stanley Jogodowski, that may rest in peace.

FACT OF LIFE Killing the Pain-Not the Patient

by Richard M. Doerflinger and Carlos F. Gomez, M.D., Ph.D. Some time ago an ad appeared in a medical journal promoting a new pain-killing drug. To emphasize that this new product could relieve pain without sleepiness or other side-effects, the ad began with a slogan: “Stop the pain. Not the patient.” The outcome of our society’s debate on physician-assisted suicide may depend on how well we communicate and act upon a similar message. We are living at a time when some doctors and lawmakers think that the best solution for some patients’ suffering is to give them lethal drugs for suicide. Catholics committed to the dignity of each human person must insist: “Kill the pain- Not the Patient.” It is a compelling message. Some opinion polls show support for assisted suicide when it is presented as the only relief for a dying patient in unbearable pain. But when Americans are offered an alternative, they overwhelmingly say that society should concentrate on ensuring pain control and compassionate care for such patients-not on helping them take their lives. This preference is even stronger among dying patients themselves. (Continued next in next week’s Fact of Life)
