GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION

As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Mass when we receive Holy Communion, the true Body and Blood of the Lord. Yet, we

Catholics should receive Holy Communion only when we are living in communion with the Catholic Church and in the state of sanctifying grace and have made the appropriate fast from food and drink. Because of the connection we draw between being in full communion with the Catholic Church and receiving Holy Communion, we cannot invite those who are not Catholic to share in Holy Communion with us. Still, we welcome all to this celebration of the Mass as our brothers and sisters, and pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit will one day draw us closer “…that all may be

one.” (John 17:22)

St. Andrew Parish, a Roman Catholic community, seeks to nurture

the faith and serve the needs of parishioners and visitors by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus

Christ through active stewardship, ministries of word and sacrament, programs of Christian formation, and works of charity and justice.

The parishioners of St. Andrew Catholic Church are happy to extend a warm welcome to the many visitors who join us for worship today.

ANNOUNCEMENTS PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Dear St. Andrew Family, Jayden Lomas is a 1st grader at our school. He walks in every day with a big smile on his face that shows off his cute dimples! He is very positive and has to work harder than many other 1st graders. Jayden has hemi-plegia, a form of cerebral palsy that weakens one side of his body. He is a pediatric stroke survivor. He also suffers from epilepsy from a clot on the left side of his brain. His doctors forewarned his parents that he may never walk, may never use his right hand, and his speech may suffer as a result. Jayden had other plans! He is a determined little boy who constantly says, “I got it.” He is a positive role model to us all. His first grade teacher, Noreen Hancheck, nominated Jayden as a South Carolina Superhero, a state award given by the Children’s Museum of SC. Jayden won the Superhero award! He was honored in Columbia on Sunday, Sept. 25, and at our school pep rally on the 30th of Septem-ber. Congratulations Jayden, you are OUR Superhero! Please con-tinue to pray for Jayden, and all the students at St. Andrew. Warmly, Debbie Wilfong

“Let us love one another as God loves each one of us.” ~ St. Teresa of Calcutta

WORD OF LIFE

“God made each of us in his own image and likeness. He desires to be united with us forever in a loving relationship. God loves us, treats us with respect, and asks us to do the same with others. Every person is sacred and must be treated with the dignity they deserve. No one should ever be treated callously or care-lessly—everyone should be cherished and protected! “

~Timothy Cardinal Dolan Chairman USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities October 2016

LIFE ISSUES FORUM: WELCOME AND PROTECT LIFE BY DEIRDRE A. MCQUADE

On the eve of World Youth Day 2016 in Poland, Pope Francis gave a beautiful address. . . urging leaders to support the family, the "primary and fundamental cell of society." Specifically, he urged them to welcome and protect human life in all its stages: "Life must always be welcomed and protected. These two things go to-gether—welcome and protection, from conception to natural death."

The Holy Father said that responsibility for vulnerable families is shared in a particular way by the institu-tions of the State, the Church, and society:

All of us are called to respect life and care for it. On the other hand, it is the responsibility of the State, the Church and society to accompany and concretely help all those who find themselves in serious difficulty, so that a child will never be seen as a burden but as a gift, and those who are most vulnerable and poor will not be abandoned.

In "Living the Gospel of Life," the U.S. bishops issued a similar "welcome and protect" challenge to ordinary citizens and high-powered leaders alike. Written in 1998, its insights remain fresh and relevant today.

All too often in debates, people pit the defense of innocent, defenseless lives in opposition to work promot-ing the dignity of other vulnerable persons throughout the lifespan. From a Catholic perspective, these is-sues need not be in competition, but they must be held in proper relation to each other for promotion of the common good. Our bishops proposed the beautiful image of the human person as the "living house of God," and taught that the right to life is the foundation on which that house stands, with all other human dignity issues serving as the house's much-needed protective walls and crossbeams.

"Opposition to abortion and euthanasia does not excuse indifference to those who suffer from poverty, vio-lence and injustice.… Catholics should eagerly involve themselves as advocates for the weak and marginal-ized in all these areas," they taught. The bishops then explain:

If we understand the human person as the 'temple of the Holy Spirit'—the living house of God—then these latter issues fall logically into place as the crossbeams and walls of that house. All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, strike at the house's foundation. These directly and immedi-ately violate the human person's most fundamental right—the right to life. Neglect of these issues is the equivalent of building our house on sand. Such attacks cannot help but lull the social conscience in ways ultimately destructive of other human rights (Living the Gospel of Life, 22).

So the bishops' challenge gives us a constructive model for thinking about vital social and political concerns. Before voting this coming November, consider reading theentire statement along with the more recent "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (2015)" to enrich your conversations with friends, family members, and colleagues on these critical issues.

PARISH MINISTRY CONTACTS CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Big News: the Catechism of the Catholic Church is back in the Pews! 7,042 went home already! One of the greatest achievements of Pope John Paul II was the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This Catechism will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. “A sure norm for teaching the Faith”, as the Pope said.

Please take and study this Catechism in your own home.

This Catechism costs $5.00 each. Inside the front cover of each book you will find an ENVELOPE as follows:

Dear Sister or Brother in Christ: This Catechism of the Catholic Church is a most handy summary of the Faith that we profess as Christians. We hope you will take it to your home and read it. We would thank you for helping out with the costs of this ministry - at $5.00 for each copy of this Catechism - if you are able to donate that amount (or more, or less) by placing your donation in this envelope and then into the collection basket. Be blessed in the study of your Catechism.

Contact phone numbers are for parish use only.
