Dover Award Program Honors the Achievement

DOVER November 30, 2018 -- St Andrew’s Lutheran Church has been selected for the 2018 Best of Dover Award in the Places of Worship category by the Dover Award Program.

Each year, the Dover Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Dover area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2018 Dover

Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Dover Award Program and data provided by third parties.

Congregation Council President – Tom Burns

Reference Dec 2018 Newsletter/Council Minutes from Nov 12 - insufficient funds/bounced checks for the Carney’s

– the funds were repaid to include bank charges. The checks were written from their personal account versus the

business account hence the insufficient funds. There is no 5% late fee charged.

The Council met on December 10, 2018

• Budget Update: o Al Boettler spoke on behalf of the Finance Committee. o There was much discussion regarding alternative ways to balance the budget. o We need a 2019 budget proposal for the Annual Congregation Meeting in January. The

congregation needs to know all about our financial deficit. o The need for an Operating Fund was discussed. o The Great Hall monetary issues and Carney issues continue. o Giving has been down, so expenses need to be cut. o We need to wait and see how 2018 ends financially. o We also need to see the final numbers for pledges for 2019 to see if giving is up or down for

2019. o There is some money in the Special Funds and Reimbursements that may be applied to

expenses. o There was discussion about the mortgage and the Endowment Fund going forward. o Futures Committee should have more info to present to Council at the February Council

Meeting. o At the January 2013 Congregation Meeting a Continuing Resolution was passed for the

Endowment Fund. This can only be changed by the congregation. o Pastor Mark Walters made a motion to recommend to the congregation, at the January 2019

Congregation Meeting, to take monies needed from the Endowment Fund to cover the shortfall for 2018, and to establish a Special Fund to cover the Youth and Family Mission Director position for 2019. Carol Boettler seconded, there were 7 “yes” votes and one “no” vote. The motion passed.

• Youth and Family Mission Ministries: o Jennifer Miller reported that Lonna Price has been doing a wonderful job, including writing a

curriculum, and has met with the Youth Director at the Wesley Church for more ideas. o Lonna will lead Children’s Church. The children will leave church after the Children’s Sermon,

receive instruction similar to Sunday School, then return to church for communion. • Nominations for 2019 Church Council:

o Three council members will be leaving – Tom Burns, Jennifer Miller and Gus Raitz. o Council members were asked to give recommendations for new council members to Tom

Burns as soon as possible. • Worship and Music:

o W&M working on a new job description for the Music Director and Organist.

Worship & Music Sam Reinhardt, Chair

1. Introduction of our new Music Director, Shelley Reel 2. Chancel Choir: Shelley Reel (The below listed proposal was approved by the Music &

Worship Committee) ▪ Proposal for “Anthem Sponsorship Program” from Shelley Reel

“In this age of belt-tightening and budget-cutting in our churches, we church musicians find ourselves searching for imaginative ways to raise funds for our shrinking music budgets. When I found myself in this position several years ago, I decided to try an Anthem Sponsorship Program.

I designed this permanent program similar to the Altar Flower Calendar. I first placed an announcement in the church newsletter describing this new idea and how it would work. I set a donation amount based on the cost of an anthem for the size choir we had and the cost of a Sunday morning flower arrangement. I designed a calendar for people to sign up for a date during the year, and who they were honoring or memorializing--“In Honor of my granddaughter, Suzie’s 9th birthday” In memory of my father, Joe Smith.” While I was not trying to take anything from the flowers, this was giving the congregation an option they’d never had before. I did not give them the option of choosing any music, however; that was my choice alone, based on the theme, scripture or season of the day. The donor names were put in the worship bulletin, just as flower donors would be and they were also placed on the cover of the anthem itself. If the family wanted it, I would give them a copy of the anthem as well.

If there were more than one person per Sunday, I would either divide the cost between them or choose a second anthem. The end result was that I never touched the budgeted funds that year and ended up with a surplus and was able to build an entire new library.

3. Organist/Accompanist Search - The committee is still searching. Shelley gave Sam a name of a possible organist and they are awaiting his reply.

4. Projection and Sound System Information – Bob Federwitz

a. All items ordered have been shipped to St. Andrew’s free of shipping b. Chris (Best Buy) felt the TVs could be installed on the side by the organ and piano

respectively. He agreed that the TVs would stick out and could seem obtrusive. Chris agreed that mounting the TVs to the front wall would be a much better option.

c. Installation to be scheduled in the immediate future per Best Buy personnel availability.

5. Lent Services –it was decided to look at a Taizé style service instead. Further research/examination of the style of service will be conducted.

One of our goals for the Evangelism Committee is to reach out into our community, and one of the places we know we can make a difference is Towne Point Elementary School. With the help of many of you in the congregation, we were able to donate 100 books to the library at Towne Point. The children’s faces just lit up as they browsed through the brand new, beautiful books, making connections to places they had lived as well as what they were learning in school. Seeing children immediately pick up books and begin reading, begging to check them out, was all we hoped for! Thanks to all of you who were so generous in making this outreach such a success.

THE DELAWARE LUTHERAN OFFICE FOR PUBLIC POLICY

BACK IN BUSINESS!

The Delaware Lutheran Office for Public Policy has a long history, but it has been out of commission for the last eight years. This fall the Delaware-Maryland Synod decided to bring this office back, and Bishop Gohl has appointed me as the State Public Policy Officer. (Reformation’s own John Ranney was the last to serve in this capacity.) Let me introduce myself: I’m a retired Lutheran pastor, having served for 44 years, mostly in the SE PA Synod. When I retired, I moved to Dover. The Delaware’s Legislative Hall isn’t far away! The ELCA has state offices in at least sixteen states, and the number is growing. Also, there is an ELCA Advocacy Office in Washington DC. The DE Office for Public Policy will monitor events in the State Legislature, communicate with congregations across the state, and encourage your participation in the public arena. When issues arise that coincide with published social statements of the ELCA, the Office will sometimes communicate those concerns to the legislators. We respect the differences between church and state; we will be strictly non-partisan and not get involved in any political campaigns, but we will speak up as an organization and encourage members of our congregations to do the same. The constitution of the ELCA states that is part of the purpose of church to “serve in response to God’s love to meet human needs, caring for the sick and aged, advocating dignity and justice for all people, working for peace and reconciliation among the nations and standing with the poor and powerless committing itself to their needs.” We have a Policy Council to assist in the work of the Office, and representations from each of the Delaware Lutheran congregations are being appointed. I’ll try to keep you informed about what’s happening as our work progresses. --Gordon Simmons

From Lonna Price, Youth & Family Ministry This year so far has been a whirl-wind! Thank you to everyone in the congregation who has contributed time, supplies, and emotional support!! Things have been rolling and I couldn’t be happier. We had a few children join us for our Childcare event on December 7th where we decorated the new Chrismons that are on the tree in the sanctuary and after the event we had such a surplus of donations that we were able to donate food items to the food pantry! Several of our youth joined in caroling for the homebound and we had fun, and hope that the recipients of our holiday cheer didn’t mind our singing too much! We are currently putting our final touches on our Christmas Eve Service and hope everyone who comes out will enjoy our performance. We always have room for more Angels and will have halos available for those who want to lend their voices to the host! Coming on January 6th we will begin hosting a Children’s Church during service! We will be focusing on bible stories and mirroring the message in “grown-up” service as much as we can. Plans are coming together for future events in the new year, so keep an eye out for flyers around the church!

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!

One more thing – We are looking for volunteers for the Nursery. If you can help please let me know by either calling (302.382.5762), texting or emailing ([email protected]).

NOTES FROM THE LOFT…..

The New Year always brings changes and this one will bring a staffing change to St Andrew’s Lutheran Church. January 1, will mark my official start in serving as your Director of Music Ministries. I am Shelley Reel, a certified church musician (CCM). I am deeply honored and very excited to be called to serve at St Andrew’s.

Music and church have been huge parts of my life since I was a little girl. My mother told me I starting singing in the crib and never stopped. In high school, I was selected to sing with the Maryland State Chorus and was also the youngest member of Baltimore’s Phoenix Choir. The Director, also my voice teacher, was an inspiration to pursue a career in music. Lessons learned from her on the principles of hard work, passion, and a commitment to excellence continue to guide me to this day. I went on to study at Messiah College—now Messiah University—and earned my BS in Music Education as a Voice Major. I later starred in several operas in Pennsylvania and sang in several choirs for professional singers in both Pennsylvania and Tennessee. I also attended Union Seminary for a year before I realized that God didn’t want me behind the pulpit, but behind my music stand.

I was born and raised in Baltimore and now live in Easton, Maryland with my husband, David, 4 cats, and 2 dogs. We have two grown daughters, Elyse, a professional writer who lives in Minneapolis, and Leah, a stay at home mom and special education graduate student. She lives in Parkville, Maryland with her husband, Kevin and our two beautiful grandchildren, Hadley and Elliot. David is the Managing Partner at a consulting firm he founded and is also the Maryland Director at another consulting firm. I am a partner at David’s firm where my focus is on helping churches on worship renewal. Our 38 years of marriage (and still counting) has taken us on great adventures while living in four states – Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland. In each of them, I served small, medium and large churches from a wide range of denominations, including Lutheran, Presbyterian. United Methodist, Disciples of Christ, and Evangelical Congregational, and Episcopal.

I founded and serve as the Artistic Director of Bells of the Bay, a community handbell choir based in Easton. Our mission is very much a ministry in that we bring our concerts to churches with no handbell ministry or to very tiny churches where outside groups rarely, if ever share their musical gifts. It is a very rewarding non-traditional ministry.

During certain weekdays, you may see me in Dover, but not at St. Andrews, while doing my “day job”. I am the person in the grocery store you love to hate. I am a team leader for product resets at the Safeway stores in Dover and in Rehoboth Beach. My team regularly moves products around so you can’t find what you are searching for where it used to be. No need to thank me. I get paid to do that.

That’s all for now.

In next month’s newsletter I will share my guiding principles on music on ministry Going forward (even before January 1), please feel free to contact me at 443.786.9010 or at [email protected] any time you have questions, suggestions or comments about the music ministry at St. Andrew’s. Given my work schedule I may not get back to you immediately, but I will get back to you. Blessings. G. Shelley Reel, CCM
