Prayers for the Church Following the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, please pray for Archbishop Dr. Daniel Sarfo and the bishops, priests, deacons, religious, and laity of The Church of the Province of West Africa.

Missionary work began in Ghana in 1752. The Church of the Province of West Africa was established in 1951 by the bishops of five West African dioceses with the consent of the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1977 they were joined by the Diocese of Liberia. In February 1979, the new Church of Nigeria separated from the Province and was inaugurated as a separate province. In 1981 Sierra Leone was divided into the Diocese of Freetown and the new missionary Diocese of Bo and four new Ghanaian dioceses were formed. In 1985 the Gambia and Guinea diocese was partitioned into English-speaking Gambia and French-speaking Guinea. Another Ghanaian diocese was inaugurated in November 2014.[1]

The final total of 17 dioceses represents 11 dioceses in Ghana and six in the other seven nations (Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Senegal, and Sierra Leone). For this reason actions are in hand to move towards making Ghana a separate province.

Today, the Church has survived civil war in some countries, with great loss of life and destruction of churches, and has to continue to survive in areas of civil unrest where Christians remain a small minority. In The Gambia, for example, the president recently declared that the country is an Islamic state, prompting fears that Christians might be alienated.

Today, there are more than one million Anglicans out of an estimated population of over 35 million.

The province supports four theological seminaries (two in Ghana, one in Liberia and one in Sierra Leone) and a lay training centre in Ghana.

Please pray especially for the peaceful spread of the light of the Gospel. Please give thanks for the ending of the Ebola epidemic in parts of the Province.

Following the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, please pray for Fr. David Hudspeth, Mother Colleen Dewey, and the people of St. Mathews, Lapeer, Michigan.

Following the Parish Cycle of Prayer, please pray for the Brian, Reneé, Madeleine, Avery, Elizabeth, Isabella, Caroline and Oliver Sylvester; Aaron and Monique Thomas; Jim and Sue Thomas; the Pre-teen Bible Study, and the Handbell Choir.

Please also pray for those who care for animals: may they treat them with reverence, as God’s creations.

Encouragement for your prayer time with GodHow do you express anger? How does God want you to express anger? “Therefore, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God.” (James 1:19-20) “An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression.” (Proverbs 29:22) “I will cry to God Most High, to God who vindicates me.” (Psalm 57:2) — From the St. Andrew’s Prayer Ministries Team

Prayer for our country at the Courthouse Oct. 8As a result of the prayer meeting that was held in June at the Delaware County Courthouse, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church will again conduct a prayer meeting on the steps of the Courthouse on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. The purpose of the meeting is to pray for the stability of the nation following the Nov. 8 election. All parish members are encouraged to attend this opportunity to pray for the welfare of our country. For further information, please contact Fr. Wil Verhoff, 740-602-8810.

Women’s Bible study group meets this coming TuesdayThe Women’s Tuesday morning bible study will meet again this Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The groups is studying “The Best Yes: Making Wise Decisions in the Midst of Endless Demands,” by Lysa Terkeurst.Anyone can join in at anytime on this six-week video study. We meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month, and will conclude this study on Dec. 6.

New bishop to visit St. Andrew’s in NovemberWe’re pleased to announce that the Rt. Rev. Dr. Ronald Jackson, who was consecrated as the second bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes in April, will make his first official visit to St. Andrew’s on Saturday, Nov. 19, and Sunday, Nov. 20.It is appropriate that all baptized Christians make a mature profession of faith in Jesus Christ. If you are an adult or mature youth who has not yet been confirmed, we invite you to receive this Sacrament. Youth who wish to be confirmed should attend the catechism class with Fr. Ron. (See details on the opposite page.) In addition, if you have joined St. Andrew’s in the past year and would like to renew your baptismal vows before the Bishop, we invite you to do so.If you desire to be confirmed, or wish to renew your baptismal vows, please contact the parish office at 740-548-5112, or [email protected].

Ron Baird will lead a confirmation class for youth interested in being confirmed on Sunday, Nov. 20, when Bishop Ron Jackson will make his first visit to St. Andrew’s. We are hoping to have our regulars come and contribute to the conversation, even if they have already been through the classes and/or been confirmed. You have a lot to offer! To make it a little more fun, we plan to take breaks, play a game or two and have snacks. The three sessions will be at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, Tuesday, Oct. 25, and Sunday, Nov. 13. Those interested in being confirmed are asked to contact Fr. Youth campfire next Sunday, Oct. 9Our third annual campfire for youth and parents will take place on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. We invite all middle school and high school students and their families to have s’mores and hang out at the fire pit at church, near the playground. We will provide the s’mores stuff, but we ask you to bring a chair as well as a marshmallow stick if you have one. It does not turn dark until 7 p.m. so come at 6:30 to try out the new basketball hoop, play foursquare or help get the fire going. We will start s’mores around 7 o’clock and be done by 8 p.m.

Come Grow in Faith on Sunday mornings! Sunday morning Grow in Faith time for youth takes place at the Parish House from 10:15-11 a.m. Grades 6 and 7 are in Room 202, with Ana Grum and Pokey Gales as facilitators. Grades 8-12 meet in Room 201, with Lori Cornett as facilitator. Both classes are focusing on the New Testament this year, after studying the Old Testament last year. They have a short video with corresponding Bible passages and questions to follow. And we bring donuts as an extra incentive for these tweens and teens to come! We would love to see more of our youth pop in on a Sunday morning when they can.

Vestry Elections Nov. 5 & 6On Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6, the Parish will vote to elect four members to serve three-year terms — from 2017 through 2019 — on our St. Andrew’s Vestry. Vestry’s overall responsibilities include visioning, overseeing the direction of the Parish, and promoting our purpose and mission. They meet monthly on the third Monday evening. If you’re interested in serving your parish on Vestry , please speak with a current Vestry member about what’s involved, or talk with Fr. Ron. Vestry names and contact information are listed in the Member Connection of our website, standrewspolaris.org, and on the bulletin board just inside the Gathering Area to the right. Vestry candidate forms are at the Welcoming Desk in the Narthex and can also be downloaded from our Member Connection. Candidate forms must be completed and returned to the parish office no later than Sunday, Oct. 16, to allow the forms to be prepared and available to the parish two weeks prior to the election, as our bylaws require.

Girards to share Haiti mission experiences Sunday, Oct. 16Earlier this year, St. Andrew’s helped support a mission trip to Haiti that Daniel Girard and his daughter Maddie participated in with their church, North Park Church of Christ, Columbus. On Sunday, Oct. 16, Daniel and Maddie will be sharing their experiences with us during the Adult Forum at 10:15 a.m.If you normally attend the 5 p.m. Saturday service, consider coming back Sunday morning to hear Daniel and Maddie, and if you attend the 11:15 a.m. Sunday service, plan to arrive early that day! Refreshments will be served. Daniel is the son of George and Barbara and brother of Tom, all members of St. Andrew’s. Many long-time members remember watching Tom and Daniel both grow up in our church.

Honoring our beloved petsWe are inviting parishioners to submit a picture of pets they have lost in the past year for publication

in “The Net” on Oct. 9, the Sunday after the Feast of St. Franics of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Please submit your picture, along with your pet’s name, date of birth or adoption, and death, and your name

(preferably electronically) to Judy Baird at [email protected] no later than Wednesday, Oct. 5. If you don’t have e-mail access or a digital picture, you may drop pictures and info in her mail slot in the Gathering Area.

Here’s how you can help:

1 We need prayers! Prayer is the “oil” that keeps the wheels of Kairos going! Prayers are needed always, but especially for all 80-plus hours of the weekend. Please choose a half-hour or hour and pray for the 42 inmates, some of whom will be hearing the message of Christ for the first time. A sign-up chart will be in the Gathering Area.

2 We need cookies! Home-baked, prayed over while baking! We take “Christ on a cookie” to every corner of the institutions. They are the bait that we use as “fishers of men.” During each Kairos weekend, all the inmates in an institution are treated to homemade cookies. We pray that whoever receives the cookies will also be open to receiving the Lord. Chocolate chip cookies are the favorite, and we ask that they be packed one dozen to a quart zip-lock bag. Other kinds, such as oatmeal-raisin, peanut butter, etc. will not be shared with the general population, but used only by the participants. They should be packed one dozen to a quarter zip-lock bag without the zipper. Cookies are needed by Oct. 26.

3 We need money! It costs $150 for each prison resident who attends a Kairos weekend. To provide one meal for one resident is approximately $5. Small contributions add up quickly! Is God calling you to write a check?

4 We need letters; just short notes of encouragement. Cards are wonderful. Just address on the card or letter “Dear Sister in Christ,” and put it in a plain, unsealed envelope. Any number are acceptable.

5 If you are so minded, we can also use banners, posters, and decorated placemats!

More information is available at the Kairos display in the Gathering Area. Donna loves to talk about Kairos, so ask her any questions you may have after church or call her at 614-948-3833! “Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it unto Me.” — Jesus Christ

For more information, or to volunteer to help, please contact Lori Cornett, Harvest Festival coordinator, at [email protected] or 614-218-9882.

Two Sunday morning ministries have urgent volunteer needsKitchen Saints/Coffee HourThe Kitchen Saints ministry is currently needs a team leader for the second Sunday of the month.Duties include arriving before the 9 a.m. service in time to start the coffee and tea water, putting out the snacks provided by parishioners after Children’s Chapel, and refreshing the coffee pots, tea kettle, and snack plates after the service. There is no cleanup, as there is a crew to do that.To volunteer, please contact Marty Scott, 614-284-0182 or [email protected].

Nursery We have an urgent need for volunteers to serve our youngest members in the Nursery! Our biggest need is during the 9 a.m. service, specifically the first, second, and fifth Sundays. We could use another person for the 11:15 a.m. service to serve once a month and possibly sub when our regular volunteer is out of town or sick. There is a speaker in the Nursery, so you will not miss the sermon and you are back in the service in time for Communion. If we could get a few more people to volunteer just once a month, that would help so much. It’s awkward to have no one in the nursery when visitors show up with young children, so we ask that you please pray about volunteering for one of the easiest and most rewarding areas of ministry in our church! To volunteer, please contact Tally Whitehead, 740-548-1765 or [email protected], or Judy Baird, 614-282-1299 or [email protected].
