Dear parishioners,
As I mentioned to you last week, I just came from the
World Youth Day in Panama. The bishops of Central
America had asked that World Youth Day be held in
this part of the world because many of the youngsters
here would never have the possibility of traveling to
other countries such as Europe and Brazil for World
Youth Day. It would be too difficult for them to raise
money for travel or acquire the necessary visas, and so
the Holy Father consented to hold World Youth Day
in Central America. Panama was chosen as the loca-
tion because it is perhaps the country in Central
America that is most suited, with its infrastructure and
security, to host a World Youth Day. It was being held
in January because Central America follows the aca-
demic year of South America and, in the Southern
Hemisphere, this is their time of summer vacation. Of
course, the timing made it difficult for Europeans and
North Americans to attend. This is the 10th World
Youth Day. Each has been a time of great blessings
and a wonderful opportunity for young people to un-
derstand the universality and catholicity of our
Church. Some studies have shown that, in the United
States, over one-third of our seminarians have at-
tended a World Youth Day. This just shows the im-
pact that this experience has on young people.
The theme for this World Youth Day was “Be It Done
To Me According To Thy Word.”, so the music, lit-
urgy, celebrations and logo was prominently Marian,
that is, it was centered on the Virgin Mary’s response
to the archangel Gabriel. The presence of so many
thousands of young fervent pilgrims changed the at-
mosphere and energy of the whole country: their joy
was contagious to all people including no believers.
The media, that at the beginning was very critical of
this event, turned 180 degrees to cover all the events
with positive reviews. I myself came renewed from
this experience and the testimony of many young peo-
ple that were touched by the love of God and the mes-
sages of the Holy Father. There was a crowd of about
700,000 people for the final Mass with the Holy Fa-
ther. The music and the participation were, as always,
very moving. As we concluded, the Holy Father made
the announcement that the next World Youth Day will
be held in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2022. We plan to do
some fundraising to bring some of our youth to that
next World Youth Day. Have a blessed week.

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection: Feb. 10, 2019 The First Reading from Isaiah describes a vision of
the prophet in which angels surround the Lord. They
proclaim, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All
the earth is filled with his glory!” Our God invites us
to such deep intimacy and friendship with Him that
we sometimes can forget just how majestic and un-
speakably holy He truly is.
As we contemplate the holiness of God, we come to a
heightened awareness of what
a privilege it is that He has
chosen to include us in His
work of spreading the Gospel
to others through the grateful
sharing of the gifts He has
given us. We can make the
words of the prophet Isaiah
our own: “Then I heard the
voice of the Lord saying,
“Whom shall I send” Who will
go for us? Here I am, I said,
send me!”
In the Gospel we find Jesus preaching to a crowd
who is pressing in on Him to listen. In response, Jesus
uses very ordinary means so that the crowd can hear
Him. He simply gets into one of the nearby boats be-
longing to Simon so that His voice will better carry
over the water. He finishes speaking and then tells
Simon the fisherman to lower his nets for a catch.
Simon is skeptical about this instruction but obeys.
The result is a catch of fish beyond Simon’s wildest
imaginings. Overwhelmed, he fell at Jesus’ knees,
“for astonishment at the catch of fish they had made
seized him and all those with him.”
But just as Jesus reassured Simon, “Be not afraid,”
He reassures us, too. We need not fear a stewardship
way of life.
