tails of the offending vehicles are re-corded by the volunteers this in itselfwill not end up in anyone being prose-cuted.

The police will inform the vehicle own-ers of the situation and hopefully thatshould be enough.

I am willing to organise and co ordinatethis scheme but I must have a goodnumber of volunteers who are willing toattend training given by the Constabu-lary and then take a turn on manning thechecks.

So I am asking for volunteers, the morethe better for this scheme. I you wouldlike to take part please let me know assoon as possible, then if we haveenough volunteers I will get thingsmoving.

If things go on as they are it is only amatter of time before a very nasty acci-dent happens.

A note through the door of number 10Methwold Road or a phone call on728233 will be sufficient but there mustbe a definite commitment otherwise theConstabulary will not do it.

be viewed in our yard, with a flower poton top. Back to the changes – the wholearea is now full of bijou hotels, street ca-fes and bars, all sorts of ethnic, orientaland Eastern European shops in the backstreets and heaving with people enjoyingthe scene. Our lovely boutique hotel wasbuilt in a converted warehouse. I took thecar to a nearby car park and got lost on theway back to the hotel. I asked a passingstranger if “that is the Clerkenwell Roadover there”. He stopped, told me in frac-tured English that he did not know, pulledout his mobile 'phone, punched a button, looked at a map of where we were stand-ing, scrolled it up and down and reassuredme that it was the Clerkenwell Road overthere! This was amazing to me, being aLuddite who turns on my mobile ' phonewhen I want to make a call but I expectmany of you will be familiar with suchmatters.

My other problem with change is that Ihave not kept up with the devaluation ofthe currency. I often convert a price backto pounds, shillings and pence and have afit! The hordes of people drinking in thebars and restaurants seemed to have infi-nite disposable income, both for eatingand drinking, and would think nothing of

next day so I booked an hotel about 100yards away from the Crypt in Clerken-well. Now, last time I was in that area ofLondon was in the early 1960's. I wasstudying medicine at The London Hos-pital in Whitechapel and I would cyclearound Clerkenwell and Shoreditchwhich were little more than semi-repaired bomb sites. All the buildingswere black with soot and there weremany warehouses associated with theleather and brewing industries. As thehotel was about 400 yards into the Con-gestion Zone, I had to pre-pay £11.50 toenter the zone and I did that a couple ofweeks beforehand.

When we arrived, it soon became appar-ent that much had changed in the 50years since I was cycling in the area(there was a rather good record librarywhich carried all the Deutsche Grammo-phon Gesellschaft classical records). Iwould borrow the Bach organ musicrecords, record them to tape and thentake the records back. I would play thetapes on my Garrard SP25 deck into aspeaker mounted in the top of a 4ft highchimney, standing on bricks to let thesound out at the bottom. The acousticswere astounding! Head Office and I went to a wedding inLondon recently. Our niece was gettingmarried and her parents and family hadcome over from New Zealand. Deanne'ssister Sally and her husband, Frank, stayed with us the week before the wed-ding and great excitement prevailed. Many of you will know that 75 Squad-ron of the Royal New Zealand Air Forcewas based here during the second WorldWar and that The Wellington Pub andRestaurant in Feltwell is something of ashrine to that squadron. Well, (GroupCaptain) Frank Sharp, Deanne's brother inlaw, was the squadron commander of 75Squadron long after their return to NewZealand and he had a great time exploringat the Wellington, imparting informationabout the men who featured in many ofthe photographs.

The wedding was to take place at BAFTAin Piccadilly and the reception was to beheld in The Crypt, under St Ethelreda's inEly Place. The Crypt dates back to the 6th

Century and Henry Vlll once held a fiveday bash there. We had to leave early the

Apparently, she explained, hergrandmother had told her that the secretof a happy marriage was never to argue.Grandma had told her that, if she be-came angry with her husband, sheshould crochet a doll and keep quiet. The old man nearly burst with pride andhappiness. In 60 years of marriage, hiswife had only been angry with himtwice! He then asked her where all themoney had come from. “Oh” she replied“That's the money I made by selling allthe other dolls”

A 40 year old man's wife left him. Incompensation, he bought himself aBMW sports car. He was trying it out onthe open road and was doing 120mphwhen he became aware of blues andtwos behind him. He pulled over and theofficer said “It's been a long day, I amabout to go home to my family and Idon't feel like more paperwork. If youcan give me an excuse I have not heardbefore, I shall let you go”. “Well” saidthe man “Last week my wife ran off witha traffic cop and I was afraid you werechasing me, trying to give her back”“Have a nice day, Sir” said the officeras he walked away.A cruise ship magician was tired of hav-ing his act spoiled by the ship's parrot

who would fly about the room giving awayall the secrets “It's up his sleeve” etc. Oneevening, during the act, the ship hit aniceberg and sank within seconds. The ma-gician and the parrot ended up clinging tothe same piece of driftwood. The parrotstared at him for hours, then said “OK, Igive up. What did you do with the ship?”

shelling out £25 for a cab home.

Howmsomever, the wedding and the re-ception were brilliant and we then spent 5days in France where it never stoppedraining. I looked at my mail when we gothome; someone had sent me a photographof our car with a demand for £65 for en-tering the London congestion zone. Confi-dently, I pulled out my booking receipt, only to discover that the date I had enteredto visit London was not the day I neededto visit London, but the day I was payingthe charge! GRR.

I'll tell you another time about how theblack cab swindled me. One word ofwarning – If you are walking about Lon-don, do not hold your mobile 'phone inyour hand. It is quite likely that a cyclistwill whip it out of your hand and speedoff. Many of the hotel staff had sufferedfrom this. I was OK because mine is virtu-ally glued into my pocket for fear of ex-cess charges and data roaming charges, etc.

An elderly couple had been married for 60years. They were extremely happy andhad no secrets from one another. She kepta small locked chest in her wardrobe andtold her husband never to ask her about itand never to try to open it. It was, however, lovely tosee our Robbie back and feelingmuch better.

Now for just a little moan. I havementioned this before and peoplehave been very kind to us so amhoping for the same kindness again, please. The Lunch Club takes placeon the second Monday of everymonth and it would help us a greatdeal if the Village Hall Car Parkwasn't so full especially near thefront door. We have several mem-bers who have difficulty walkingand getting them in and out of thehall is very difficult if drivers can'tpark in the car park. It was so fullthat there wasn't room to park leavealone get these people in andout. Apart from that it was rainingvery hard. So please could youleave us some room on the Car Parkwe would really appreciate it.

The Car Scheme continues to pro-vide a very good service to many inthe village. We have many driverswho are now out several times aweek taking people to and frommany of their hospital, doctor's, den-tist's etc appointments.

For July's lunch on Monday 11thJuly, the ladies will be serving gam-mon, potato salad, lettuce, cucumberand tomatoes with strawberries andcream. I hope that many of you willbe there to enjoy this.

NORTHWOLD CARNIVAL2016

Saturday the 11th of June saw our vil-lage of Northwold hold its 40th Carni-val. Many thanks to the people whoworked before and after the event. Theeparade was awash with the many shadeof re which reflected this year's them of‘Paint the Village Red’.

Our Carnival Queen this year was thebeautiful Katy McGann who looked sdream in her spectacular gown. TheKing, Max McGuirk was looking verydapper in is fine attire as he sat by thequeen’s side . Their float was trans-formed into a Mascaraed Ball and theroyal courtier id not fail to impress, asthey smiled and waved to the crowdswho lined the route clapping and cheer-ing.

The parade was led by The NorwichSamba Band and as always they are joyto behold as they dance and play thevarious drums along the route.

I must say the float that I was taking part

the pre-school children begin their tran-sition into school. Amidst all of this, there are many additional activities thatwe are involved in including Netball atthe UEA Norwich, School Sports Day,Whole Class Music Teaching beingfilmed and an end of year ‘musical’.We also look forward to making someformal presentations to our Year 6 asthey leave us on the 8th July. No doubt, many more events will occur betweennow and the end of term.

As has been the positive news story, forthe sustained future of the schoolthroughout this school year, we haveagain welcomed new children and theirfamilies into our school family; by thetime this article reaches print another 2children will have joined us taking ournumber on roll to 89 – it was 76 in Oc-tober! Such changes in numbers placeextreme pressure on the school finan-cially and we consequently face a finan-cially difficult year ahead. Villageschools can find survival extremely dif-ficult; however, the current ‘picture’ forThe Norman is certainly strong in termsof numbers of children and we hope tokeep it that way.

As Albert Einstein said: ‘In the middleof difficulty lies opportunity.’

Sue WhiteHead of School

‘Fun and learning round every turning’that is The Norman School ‘motto’ andthis term so far has certainly been full oflots of learning with a good ‘handful offun’ thrown in.

The Year 2 and Year 6 children haveworked incredibly hard towards theirEnd of Key Stage Tests. For Year 6children in particular, the tests were anextremely demanding time which tookimmense emotional, mental and physi-cal commitment. I can honestly say thatthe Year 6 children all gave it every-thing they possibly could and we nowawait the results of their efforts. As theirHead of School and teacher, I was ex-tremely proud of the maturity the chil-dren showed during their tests. Thetests included questions such as: Circleall of the prepositions in this sentence:‘He walked through the doorway andsat behind the desk.’ Underline the sub-ordinate clause in this sentence: ‘If youget hungry, help yourself to a snack.’Some of the spellings the children weretested on included: cousin, facial, ceil-ing, ferociously. In maths, the childrencompleted an arithmetic paper of 36questions in 30 minutes. These includedsome of the following questions: 125.48– 72.3 = 122,456 – 11,999 = 3/10– 1/20 =725 ÷ 29 = In the 2 main maths pa-pers (40 minutes each) children werechallenged on their ability to applymathematical reasoning. One of theirquestions was: Lara chooses a number

less than 20. She divides it by 2 thenadds 6. She then divides this result by 3.Her answer is 4.5. What was the num-ber she started with? Our Year 2 children also completedtests – not quite as time-bound as theYear 6. The Year 2’s applied them-selves and worked very hard to achievetheir best – at 6 and 7 years old the mereconcept of formal tests is mind-blowing;the expectations placed upon our chil-dren today is beyond belief at times!

Aside from the tests, we have seen thechildren engage in the fun and creativityof manufacturing art work for the 2floats that the school adorned for the2016 Carnival. In addition to this, MissRandell inspired several children to per-form in the ‘main arena’ some tradi-tional dances that were previously per-formed on May Day. As always, thevillage Carnival was very successful andthoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Some of our older children exploredoutdoor and adventurous activities at theHilltop Residential Centre near Shering-ham at the very end of May. Adrenalineflowed and all of the children achievedbeyond what they imagined they could. The team-spirit during the 3 days wasvery powerful with everyone supportingeveryone – well done children!

As we approach the end of anotherschool year, our oldest children begintheir transition to secondary school and

It has been a busy week for theNorthwold WI. On Saturday 11th

June we took part in the AnnualNorthwold Carnival parade. Thetheme this year was ‘Paint the TownRed’ and the ladies were dressed aspainters and decorators, dressed inwhite overalls splashed all over inred paint. They carried paint cansand brushes, pretending to splash thespectators with paint, I admit to be-ing one of those people who ducked! The WI won second prize for theirpart in the parade, and Brenda Ayrescame second in the individual cos-tume completion, well done!

On Tuesday 14th June we held ourAnnual Garden Party, it was due tobe held in Patricia Haye’s lovely gar-den. Unfor-tunately, theweather hadother ideas,so in themorning theCommitteemade the
