Gospel Value for February

LOVE

I am a loving person. I show my love with thoughtful acts, kind words and affection. I treat others the way I want to be treated.

Principal’s Message This Wednesday we will be celebrating Ash Wednesday with a liturgy in the afternoon. Lent is a time where many of us are fasting and giving up luxuries in our life in hopes of replicating the sacrifice of Jesus Christ’s journey. During Lent, our school is partnering with The Friendship Inn to collect coffee and salad dressings starting February 26th to March 9th. I hope that the second half of February will bring warm weather and outdoor recesses for everyone. St. Anne is a busy place with many activities for students including: senior boys’ and girls’ basketball, skipping team practices, track relays and practices, gardening club, ping pong and chess club. Our ski trip for grade 5-8 students is on March 1st at Wapiti Ski Hill. Parents please join us on the bus if you are able to come skiing for the day to help with the cost of the bussing. Many of our students use the back door of the school to exit the school and some students are going to the bus for their ride home. For the safety of students, we ask parents to not park in the staff parking lot at the end of the day. Students are crossing the parking lot road, it is difficult to see the students around the corner and we do not want anyone to have an accident.

Supervision Reminders We have noticed a growing number of students who are playing on the playground before and after school and coming to school prior to 8:30am. Please know that students should not be coming into the school prior to 8:30am as there is no supervision before that time. If your child needs care before or after school, we do have a Before and After School Program that is offered and available. Thanks for your cooperation. Nut Aware Please remember we strive to have an environment free of nuts for the safety of our students. Please do not send snacks or lunch with peanut or nut contents.

Before & After School Program Registration forms are available for the 2017-2018 school year. Forms can be picked up at the program or from the school secretary. Please use one form per family. Any questions or concerns please call Medie Mendoza at 954-4817. Carnival/Mardi Gras On February 13th from 12:45-2:15 the students will be putting on their own Carnival/Mardi Gras celebration in the school gym. Students have been working in French class to create their own masks for the celebration, and have been learning about the many different ways that this Pre-Lenten Feast has been celebrated in many parts of the world. At our celebration, each class will participate through song, showing a video of their learning, playing a few traditional games, parading the masks they created, and afterwards enjoying some student made tourtière! Note: Each student will have their own mask to wear to the parade. They are also welcome to further dress up for the parade if they would like, however it is not expected. Parents are invited to join us, if convenient! Did you know?!! The name Carnival comes from the Latin words “farewell to the flesh” (putting meat aside). Carnival is the feast before the fast. This celebration lasts from Epiphany to the day before Ash Wednesday- Called Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday. Carnival marks the time between two liturgical seasons, Christmas time and Lent. In many places, the foods of Carnival are anything and everything not eaten during Lent. When Lent meant no eating animal products-meat, lard, dairy, eggs, and even marshmallows. Carnival came to mean a festival of cholesterol-rich foods, such as fritters, pancakes and doughnuts. Also with the weather beginning to grow warmer, foods that would spoil had to be eaten or would be lost. Some areas of the world have a tradition of making pancakes this day- and of holding outdoor races while flipping pancakes in their skillets. While others hold elaborate parades and feasts. Shrove Tuesday is the English name for Mardi Gras- from the word “Shrive,” meaning, “to be forgiven”. A nearly universal Carnival tradition is the seeking of forgiveness, regarded as the only way to enter properly into Lent. Before we can seek God’s forgiveness

we first turn toward one another. In the spirit of reconciliation, Carnival is a high-steppin, high calorie antidote to winter. It’s a time to dance, attend plays, sing around the piano and make merry! In the winter, the weather can be miserable for long stretches of time. And the extra time spent indoors can encourage people to cultivate their “inner world” the word of fantasy and imagination. Carnival is a season of music, plays and art, and also for silly behavior including the wearing of disguises and masks. It’s a time to master an ethnic tradition of the season, from puppetry to polkas to samba dancing. The costumes can represent what we want to be, who we are but don’t want to be. At the end of the celebration we remove the masks, wipe off the face paint, and prepare to welcome lent, the season when we see each other as we truly are.

Marafun

May 27 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm « Craven SPORT services 5K

The program runs from March-May giving young people (Grades 1-8) the opportunity to run a marathon in a novel way. For those of you who aren’t familiar, participants will complete 40km by walking, running, or wheeling over 10 weeks. This training will lead them to the Saskatchewan Marathon race day — Sunday, May 27, 2018 – when all the participants will come together to cap off their hard work with a fun 2.2K on part of the marathon course. Throughout the program, the young athletes will learn about an active lifestyle, how they can maintain an active program to promote health and the importance of having personal goals. Creating these goals is what the Marafun is all about, providing them with skills to build a strong character that they can take into all facets of their life. This program is very exciting for participants and leaves them feeling very proud of their accomplishments. We invite you to take part in this amazing program. All it requires is a leader and young participants. The leader (Mrs. Johnson and Celeste Crosschild) will get children to run/walk/wheel a specific number of kilometres per week (we have a program that you follow) and coordinates attendance to the Saskatchewan Marathon. The fee is $15 fee for each student and includes a t-shirt, a medal and a trip to the food tent on race day, along with incentives to complete the program and build a lifelong love of being physically active. This information is available on the Marafun website: http://saskmarathon.ca/race/marafun/ Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Crosschild will be going around to each class in the next couple of weeks to further explain the program and see which kids want to sign up. If you have any questions, please let us know.
