“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Laudato Si’ Week Bring solidarity to our world in a shared moment of prayer at noon local time on May 24 with the prayer below. Catholics from all across the globe will be united in spirit because “everything is connected.” Register your participation here, and feel free to share your own prayers on social media using the hashtag #LaudatoSi5.

Laudato Si’ Prayer Loving God, Creator of heaven and earth and all that is in them, you created us in your own image and made us stewards of all your creation. You blessed us with the sun, water and bountiful land so that all might be nourished. Open our minds and touch our hearts, so that we may attend to your gift of creation. Help us to be conscious that our common home belongs not only to us, but to all of your creatures and to all future generations, and that it is our responsibility to preserve it. May we help each person secure the food and resources that they need. Be present to those in need in these trying times, especially the poorest and the most at risk of being left behind. Transform our fear and feelings of isolation into hope and fraternity so that we may experience a true conversion of the heart. Help us to show creative solidarity in addressing the consequences of this global pandemic. Make us courageous to embrace the changes that are needed in search of the common good. Now more than ever may we feel that we are all interconnected and inter-dependent. Enable us to listen and respond to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. May the present sufferings be the birth pangs of a more fraternal and sustainable world. Under the loving gaze of Mary help of Christians, we make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Coronavirus Protection Prayer From Pope Francis

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. AMEN

My Dear People of God,

This season of Easter continues to unfold before us as we move toward the great Solemnity of Pentecost. This season of “new life” offers to us gifts of mercy and special graces. The question is: “Are we aware of, and attentive to, these spiritual gifts?” If we are, then the Holy Spirit will assist us in facing the present challenges of prolonged distress, suffering and death, all initiated due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The origin of these gifts are given to us by way of the Holy Spirit. One traditional way to prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost is by praying a novena. I encourage all of us to prepare our hearts for the outpouring of the “gifts and fruits” of the Holy Spirit. May the gift of patience, which finds its origin in Spirit, help us during these trying times.

May the Day of Pentecost heal and deliver us from the darkness of this pandemic. The Holy Spirit, our Advocate and Defender, will empower and protect us. He, the Comforter, will defend us from the wiles of the Enemy - the Adversary and Accuser who has used this health crisis to pull us down with fear and the threat of suffering and death. Together, as we pray the “Novena of Pentecost,” may the “fire” of the Holy Spirit inflame within us hope, as we anticipate God’s powerful intervention!

In the Peace of Christ, -Bishop Cotta

Come, Holy Spirit - renew the face of the Earth! Novena prayers will be live on the Diocese of Stockton Facebook & YouTube pages at 12:00pm each day, beginning Friday, May 22nd.
