MERCY MOMENTS BY: DEACON TOM DRISCOLL

Our first Psalm of Mercy is Psalm 25. It is a beautiful prayer from the inmost being of the psalmist. He feels oppressed by treacherous enemies. The help he seeks is the truth of God’s ways as the path, road, guide and light through his travails. But notice how the psalmist assumes the stance of a child toward a parent, buttering him up as it were by reminding God of his compassion and mercy in connection with his request for help, and urging God not to consider his past failures in the balance. He concedes that he is a sinner truly guilty for his sins, but sincerely begs God’s grace in a time of loneliness, affliction and a troubled heart, asking God not only for relief for those needs but for forgiveness of his sins. In other words, he recognizes in his heart of hearts that he has no right to what he seeks, but is utterly and patiently dependent upon God to be the fount of mercy in whom he trusts. Indeed, the psalmist actually appears to be more concerned with his sinfulness than with his violent and treacherous enemy. This Psalm teaches an enlightening truth about prayer as well as about God’s mercy. In the midst of heartfelt

prayer from the depths of our souls, we realize that in communicating with God we lay open our hearts to him in all their brokenness. We also learn that in doing so we encounter a God in whose mercy we may take refuge because it is God’s mercy, not any merit of our own, which frees us from our sins.

Mercy Challenge for the week: Learn to examine your conscience by giving thanks for God’s blessings, reviewing your day or week or month and facing your shortcomings in real honesty with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, then going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the peace that only absolution brings.

MOMENTOS DE MISERICORDIA BY: DEACON TOM DRISCOLL
