"We need to provide an education which teaches critical thinking and encourages the development of mature moral values.”Pope Francis

Dear Benefactors, Alumni, Parents, Students, Faculty, and Friends of St. Anselm’s Abbey and School:

President’s MessageA Benedictine Tradition

Planning for the Future

June 29th, 2018 + Solemnity of Peter and Paul

This year, I fin-ished my intro-duction to this Annual Report on the Solemni-ty of Saints Peter and Paul even though it does not go to press until August. As you know, this report covers the major events from July 1st of one year to June 30th of the next. In the relative quietude of the summer, the first significant litur-

gical event for the monks is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, followed by the Feast of Saint Benedict on July 11th. Great saints like Peter and Paul or Benedict and Anselm were able to envision their faith in God and the Church as a way of life that was to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. This was accomplished through their conversion and preaching, through their prayer and work.

Peter, a poor fisherman, was called by Jesus to lead and care for the flock of Christ—“Feed my sheep.” Paul carried out his missionary mandate to the Gentiles. Both Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome around 54 A.D. Peter was crucified upside down, and Paul was beheaded, both for proclaiming the Gospel. Benedict, nearly 500 years later, brought this same zeal into the monastic cloister where his Rule then guided and is still guiding monks and nuns to seek God above all things. Some 600 years after Benedict, Anselm proclaimed the same Gospel, prayed the same Psalms, and taught the same faith within a rigorous intellectual and scholastic framework. And here we are today in Washington, some 1,500 years since Benedict, still striving to do the same thing—praying, working, learning, and seeking God.

The academic year 2017-2018 was both exciting and notable. Exciting because after three years of planning, the abbey and school are conscientiously working for the future as we begin a feasibility study for our new Benedictine Learning Center. And truly notable be-

cause the school successfully concluded our campaign to raise a million dollars for the Scholarship Endow-ment Fund, and this million will be matched by the Brian Devine Family Trust. Pope Francis continues to say that Catholic education must be affordable. The Scholarship Endowment Fund makes the “St. Anselm’s Experience” possible for many students who could not otherwise attend. I want to sincerely thank all those who were able to donate to this matching campaign—without each and every one of you, we could not have reached our goal.

Nearly 40 years ago, the first Master Plan for the abbey and school was produced by Sasaki Associates. We fol-lowed that plan for the new gymnasium, theater, and main office in the school. Then in 2016, after a year of study, the Sasaki firm revisited their Master Plan and updated it to reflect the future needs of the abbey and school.

In June, we hired CCS Fundraising to perform a feasi-bility study for this ambitious project. CCS Fundraising has had extensive experience working within the local Catholic community and with their help, the monastic community and school are forging ahead.

In its preliminary stages, the Benedictine Learning Cen-ter is envisioned as a two-story, multipurpose building that embodies the essential characteristics of St. An-selm’s Abbey and Abbey School: scholarship, education, prayer, and spiritual growth. That St. Anselm’s should be a center for lifelong learning is what was envisioned by our founder, Fr. Thomas Verner Moore, OSB, and our first headmaster, Fr. Austin McNamee, OSB.

This new centerpiece of our campus will ensure that the school’s high academic standards will continue, and at the same time, the abbey’s unique requirements will be met. The Ora et Labora of Saint Benedict—the blend of prayer and work through education—is ever para-mount. The Board of Trustees will review the Feasibili-ty Study at their September meeting this fall. I will keep you posted on their decision.

Academics at the school remain high—yes, we really are doing what we claim. St. Anselm’s Abbey School, as attested to by the Jay Mathew’s Challenge Index pub-lished in The Washington Post, remains the top academic school in the metropolitan area.

As you will read later in this Annual Report, our Sixth Form students were accepted at many splendid colleges and universities, and I am pleased to report that our mission of academic excellence remains pre-eminent, always challenging, always supportive of each and ev-ery student. Our commencement speaker, Stephen Kinnaird, ’80, a Rhodes Scholar and member of the school’s Board of Trustees, challenged the Class of 2018 to build a balanced life upon the intellectual foun-dation they received here; you can read his speech later in this publication.

The first full day of classes was August 24th when the school opened its doors to 265 young scholars. The miracle we call the Priory or Abbey School is thriving. On September 8th, House Day, each new student was assigned to a particular house—Alban, Austin, Main, or Moore. Afterwards, there was a full day of sports and a picnic lunch so everyone could get acquainted and feel at home.

The Parents Association, again under the leadership of Holly and Gerred Howe, held its annual Family Picnic on September 10th with ample food, games, and other delights for the huge crowd of parents, children, teachers, and guests. The social event of the year, the 35th Fall Scholarship Gala, took place on the evening of October 28th. This was our most successful Gala, raising over $340,000 for current scholarship needs. I want to thank the scores of parents who worked so very hard to make the Gala a success, and I especially want to thank Kimberly Walhout, our assistant development director, who orchestrated the whole event.

That evening, our honorees were the current Thirteen Resident Monks who taught in the school over these many years and Mr. William Fennell, ’66. Let me now encourage you to mark your calendars for the 2018 Fall Scholarship Gala, which will be held on Saturday, October 27th. This year’s Gala will be a celebration of “All Hallows’ Eve,” a fun time for all our constituents. Our guests of honor will be Silvija and Brian Devine, ’59, in recognition of their major contributions to the school and to the Endowed Scholarship Fund—a grand total of $5,000,000. I hope all of our donors, alumni, and school families can attend this joyous masquerade Gala.

The Alumni Office, under the direction of Lawrence Hamm, ’68, had a full schedule of well-attended events, starting with the traditional Career Day on September 18th, when eleven distinguished alumni shared their knowledge and expertise with our Fifth and Sixth Form students.

In mid-December, I traveled to Ketchikan, Alaska, to give a six-day retreat at Holy Name Catholic Parish where Vince Marcantonio, ’13, is the Director of Reli-gious Education & Youth Minister. Two other alumni also live there: Tom Heutte, ’81, and Gerhard Jansen, ’12. Scott Maxwell, ’98, teaches school on one very small island in the Aleutian Chain after teaching for sev-eral years in Sitka. Our alumni are everywhere.

Then in late January 2018, Assistant Headmaster Kirk Otterson and I went to Boston for the Model United Nations Conference. While in Boston, I joined seven

alumni and their wives at the home of Annette and Mi-chael Mariani, ’88, for a buffet supper. One week later, on Thursday, February 1st, Richard Stafford, ’53, host-ed 17 alumni, Headmaster Bill Crittenberger and me in New York City at The Links Club. Finally, on March 1st, a small group of Philadelphia alumni met for lunch with David Harnett, ’58, who has been recovering from a fall.

Our Open House for prospective students on Novem-ber 5th was a great success. Over 120 families toured the campus with current students as guides. Our admissions officers, Peter Young, ’01, and Kyle Bellows, with the aid of alumni, faculty, and staff, truly made visible the St. Anselm’s Experience. The visitors’ excitement and interest in the school’s academic program was evident to all.

On November 25th, the traditional Thanksgiving Me-morial Mass and Alumni-Varsity Basketball Game took place. After Mass, there was a buffet supper of fried chicken, baked beans, and pizza. Bravo to the victorious varsity team—perhaps this is a foreshadowing victory for our team at the Invitational Basketball Tournament in March.

On December 19th, the school hosted Form VII For-ever, our Past Parents social organization. Many were able to attend the Christmas Concert, which was fol-lowed by a wine and cheese reception on the mezza-nine. Abbot James and Headmaster Bill Crittenberger welcomed the attendees.

Lent was early this year, so the second event for Form VII Forever was their Lenten Mass and Brunch on February 18th. Fr. Michael Hall, OSB, ’56, school chaplain, celebrated the Mass. Afterwards, 55 guests made their way down to the Commons to partake of a bountiful breakfast buffet—clustered platters of clut-tered delectables.

On the weekend of March 3rd, the 71st annual St. Anselm’s Invitational Basketball Tournament filled our gym with crowds of athletes and spectators. With longtime coach Paul Grenaldo, our varsity team played with gusto, and as prediction did tell, won the tournament—first time since 2006. This is still “a building year,” so the next basketball season should produce many honors. I want to thank Athletic Direc-tor Steve Roush and all the parents for their support, hard work, and time to make this event such a success.

2017-2018 Annual Report | 5

The school celebrated Benedictine Heritage Week from March 19th until the 23rd. Unfortunately, a late snowstorm interfered with some of the scheduled events. Then on April 21st, the Feast of Saint Anselm, the Spring Concert and Art Show took place; Mae-stro Maican, Michael Lodico, and Blair Sutton surely brought out the best musical and artistic talents in our students.

On the weekend of April 27th–29th, the school held its tenth All-Alumni Reunion with the usual festive ac-tivities. As is tradition, a member of the class celebrat-ing its 50th reunion kicked things off with the Dis-tinguished Alumnus Address to the entire school community. This year, John Cavanaugh-O’Keefe spoke in the Devine Theater (the old gymnasium) on Friday the 27th. Following the address, there was a small reception in the abbey calefactory for the O’Keefe family and members of the 1960, 1963, and 1968 classes.

The school dedicated a bronze plaque memorializ-ing Roy O’Keefe, ’63, who is the only St. Anselm’s alumnus to be killed in action, just prior to the Dis-tinguished Alumnus Address. The small ceremony was attended by Roy’s brothers George O’Keefe, ’60, and John Cavanaugh-O’Keefe, ’68, as well as several members of the extended O’Keefe family.

The eighth annual St. Anselm’s 5K Run / Walk in memory of Peter Samp, ’08, took place on Saturday morning the 28th. This event also raised money – ap-proximately $6,000 this year – for the Scholarship Endowment. As usual, the race was followed by a scrumptious Alumni Barbecue.

The highlight of the weekend was the All-Alumni Banquet on Saturday night at which we recognized the major anniversary classes. There were over 120 alumni and guests in attendance. The Abbot Alban Boultwood Alumni Award was presented to Tim May, ’83, for his years of dedicated service to the alumni community. Tim served on the Alumni Board for many years and is a past president of the Alumni As-sociation.

On June 4th, the 25th St. Anselm's Abbey School Annual Golf Outing was held at the Glenn Dale Golf Club. This year and henceforth, the Golf Out-ing will be in memory of Patrick Attridge, ’74, long-time Alumni Association officer and golf impresario, who died in April 2017. The Board of Directors of the Association has commissioned The Attridge Cup, which will be inscribed with the names of each year’s

winning foursome and will be exhibited in The Com-mons. Though the Golf Outing was founded by James Filpi, ’86, Pat enthusiastically ran it for 23 years. This year, the Golf Outing raised $23,500 for the En-dowed Scholarship Fund, which will be matched by the Devine Family Trust.

Now that the academic year is over, I want to thank each and every member of the school’s Board of Trustees for all the time, work, and effort they have put in for St. Anselm’s Abbey School. Their guidance, ideas, and enthusiasm have been a pronounced help to me and for the future of the school. I especially want to thank Stephen Kinnaird, ’80, who is retiring this June from the Board after many, many years of ser-vice—may God’s blessings be upon him. I also want to thank Sylvia Mahaffey for her many years as Chair of the Board; she has kept us on track and on sched-ule year after year. She will continue to be a valued member of the Board. Dan Attridge, ’72, will become Chair of the Board in July. Finally, I would like to wel-come our only new member, Terrence Caulfield, ’85.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Bill Critten-berger, who just completed his sixth year as head-master. Bill took office on July 1st, 2012, as the tenth headmaster of St. Anselm’s, and for the past six years has led the school with warmth, with enthusiasm, and with vision. I also want to thank our faculty and staff for their professionalism, hard work, and dedication. This school could not function without their passion and talents.

As June came to a close, Kimberly Walhout of our Development Office told me that in the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the school raised $1,248,423. I am grate-ful to all of our faithful benefactors. As I said earlier, ONE MILLION DOLLARS was raised during the past 18 months for the Endowed Scholarship Fund. A full list of donors and gifts is presented in the fol-lowing pages. Without your prayers and generosity, this Benedictine abbey and school in the Nation’s Capital could not survive—thank you so much. Know that the monks pray daily for you and your families.

And so another year has passed. St. Anselm’s Abbey and Abbey School are preparing for the future with our Benedictine Learning Center, and it is my prayer and hope that these ambitious plans can be fulfilled. As I said in my opening paragraph, great saints like a Benedict or an Anselm were able to seek an ecstasy of life or transfiguration of the ordinary into the extraor-dinary through their prayer and work. This occurs when insight and perseverance form an underlying pattern, thereby transforming our frequently aspiring and demanding dreams into reality. Somehow, Bene-dictines have a genius sufficient to meet new chal-lenges through prayer and work—that this monastic “school for the Lord’s service” will flourish.

Pax in Sapientia,

Trophy winners, Robert Pizzano, parent, Steve Roush, Athletic Director, Carlo Pizzano, Form V with Kevin Hudson, ’04, Alumni Director and Fr. Peter, OSB at the Alumni Golf Outing.

2017-2018 Annual Report | 7

Much continues to go exceptionally well at St. An-selm’s, highlighted, on my list, by the annual and always incandescent process of witnessing the gaggle of talent-ed new boys—whether joining us in the 6th, 7th, 9th, or some other grade (and each very much with his own per-sonality)—transform, typically the most noticeably early in the junior year following the Kairos retreat, into a tight-knit and unified “brotherhood” comprised of exceptional men, men of goodness, light, integrity, service, and energy (and, yes, each still very much with his own personality).

This past year saw a colorful, kind, and passionate class, the Class of 2018—known for its inclusivity, open-mind-edness, and high level of support and empathy for one another—make an important mark on the school and on its younger Abbey “brothers.” As these 42 young men head off on their next adventure, college and beyond, they will long be remembered for having contributed significantly and effectively to a broader set of student leadership opportunities and for having raised and kept on the front-burner the school’s awareness of and con-sciousness of the ofttimes tumultuous, uncertain, and dispiriting happenings that occurred at the national level this past year.

This community, once again having reached its endowment and Annual Fund goals, makes sure to provide ev-ery qualified boy—through the lens of our Financial Aid program—a rightful place in our student body, an integral imperative that says much about who we are and what we stand for and aligns magnificently with our mission. It is through this generous Financial Aid program—which benefits upwards of 35 percent of our families and at an av-erage level of $13K—that capable students who could not otherwise attend this right-fitting school are, in fact, able to attend. To the hundreds upon hundreds of you who contribute to this defining element of school life, an ele-ment that makes us a better school and a better place, I extend my heartfelt thanks.

As I reflect on my six years at St. Anselm’s, regularly I return to the community’s diversity, and its many forms, as something that I am proud of and that helps me do my job to the best of my ability both as a motivator, manager, and leader of others and as someone who finds personal inspiration by his affiliation with a like-minded institution. One of the many components of diversity that we care about here and do really well by is in our student body’s international make-up and background. For example, three of this year’s graduates—each of whom is from a family in which his parents emigrated from Ethiopia and each of whom had an absolutely fabulous and defining run as an Abbey Boy—will be attending three of the colleges

ranked in the top 20 nationally by US News and World Report. Anoth-er 2018 graduate, one of the half-doz-en or so Chinese international stu-dents who annually attend our Upper School and who during those years live with and thrive with a host family, set the School’s all-time record in one of our most val-ued categories, that of having taken the most AP exams (hence, classes) during his high school career: 15. As if that singular accomplishment weren’t enough, this young man earned an average score of 4.13 (on a scale of 1-5)

on those 15 exams, placing him quite comfortably within the very highest of “AP Scholar” categorizations, that of AP National Scholar (defined as that student who earned an average mark of 4.0 or higher on 8 or more APs)—which, by my calculation, means that he very nearly “lapped” the 8 (or more) field. Whew! He, too, will be attending one of the US News top 20 schools (a different one from his aforementioned peers) and he, too, is an amazing and an amazingly contributory Abbey Boy. So, yes, diversity is a good, uplifting, and es-sential thing, something to be celebrat-ed and sought out in our lives and in those we mentor.

In closing, allow me again to express my deep appreci-ation to those of you who have generously contributed to the School’s philanthropic efforts, an arena in which truly every gift, regardless of its size, matters. I have enjoyed my time at St. Anselm’s and have been moved on many occasions by how fortunate I am to have landed here and by how uplifted I have been and continue to be toiling and breaking bread with such a slew of exemplary and oth-ers-centered folks.

Pax in Sapientia,

Headmaster’s LetterDear Members of the St. Anselm’s Community:

William T. CrittenbergerHeadmaster

8 | St. Anselm’s Abbey School

Chair’s ReportThis past school year, 2017-2018, was a busy year, filled with many accomplishments, and so there is much to write. Perhaps most important, as St. An-selm’s concluded its 75th year celebration as a “school of the Lord’s service,” it also concluded one of its most successful years of scholarship fundraising through the annual Fall Gala and the two-year endowment cam-paign.

This year’s Fall Scholarship Gala in October was a truly joyful celebration of Bill Fennell,’66, and the 13 current resident monks who have taught gener-ations of Abbey boys over the past many years and who, in several cases, are even yet teaching Abbey boys. Fittingly, the school’s 35th Fall Gala raised over $340,000, more funds for current scholarships than in any of its prior years.

And by June 2018, the school community had con-tributed funds achieving not just the initial $750,000 goal of the two-year Anniversary Campaign but the campaign’s highest goal of $1,000,000. With the dol-lar-for-dollar match that Brian Devine, ’59, and the Devine Family Trust had generously agreed to make, St. Anselm’s successfully increased the Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2018 by $2,000,000! The ad-dition of these funds greatly enhances the School’s continuing efforts to make it possible for all qualified students to experience the benefits of a St. Anselm’s education regardless of their own financial situation.

In the Fall of 2017, it came as no real surprise (but as a welcome confirmation) when St. Anselm’s received formal notice from the Middle States Association that they had approved the Middle States visiting team’s recommendation that St. Anselm’s be reaccredited, a qualification that will last for the next six years.

With the hard work of reaccreditation behind us, it was time to address St. Anselm’s new five-year strate-gic plan. Using the information gathered from facul-ty, staff, trustees, parents, and students as part of the reaccreditation process, the recently formed Strategic Planning Committee of the Board of Trustees worked with the school’s President, Fr. Peter, the Headmas-ter, Bill Crittenberger, and Bill’s administrative team to develop a new strategic plan with a name hearken-ing to the school’s Benedictine roots — “Always We Begin Again.” The plan calls for a focus on, and ac-tions to improve, four key areas that define the fu-ture development of St. Anselm’s Abbey School: (1) strengthening the school’s Benedictine identity; (2) fostering student success and promoting teaching ex-cellence; (3) continuing financial stewardship; and (4) enhancing the school’s facilities and infrastructure. Following many wide-ranging discussions about the proposed plan, the Board of Trustees voted in January to adopt the Strategic Plan, 2018 - 2023. Each of you will soon be seeing more about the Strategic Plan, including points of focus within each of the key cat-egories. Please look for publication of the Plan both on the school’s website and in brochure form this Fall.

Just two years ago, Sasaki and Associ-ates, an architec-tural and planning firm, updated the Master Plan for the school and the mon-astery. This Spring, the Board approved moving forward with Phase I of the plan, authorizing conceptual drawings (which you may see at the end of the Annual Report) of a new Benedictine Learn-ing Center and, more recently, a feasibility study. The Learning Center, designed to provide much-needed space for both the school and the monastery, will contain a larger, updated computer and technology center, the school library, multimedia space, tutorial rooms, an art display area, and a campus ministry of-fice for the school’s use, and, for use by the monastery, a monastic library, a conference and seminar center, and the monastery archives. In addition, the school and monastery will share a chapel large enough for 50 worshippers and a sacristy. By fulfilling these needs of the school and the monastery in a single building, the Benedictine Learning Center will architecturally enhance the bond between the school and the monas-tery. The Board of Trustees will review the Feasibility Study this fall.

In June, after nine years of dedicated service, includ-ing service as the former Board Chair, Steve Kinnaird ’80, concluded his term as a Trustee. The Board will miss his excellent counsel, his insights, his vision, and his dedication. In the coming year, the Board is pleased to welcome one new Board member: Ter-rence Caulfield, ’85, who is currently the Senior Vice President of Coakley and Williams Construction.

On June 30, I completed my service as Chair of the Board of Trustees. I am pleased that the end of my four years as Board Chair will not be the end of my service to St. Anselm’s, as I will continue to serve as a Trustee for the next two years. The people I have met and come to know while serving as Chair – the other Trustees, school employees, and many parents – consistently remind me why I am always willing to devote “time and treasure” to this unique community that is filled with adults and students who are people of intelligence, generosity of spirit, deep spirituality, and concern for others.

I welcome Daniel Attridge, ’72, a devoted and judi-cious member of the Board these past years, who, to our great good fortune, just recently completed his service as Dean of the Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America, as my successor as Chair of the Board of Trustees.

“I wasn't sure my son could manage the academic challenge of Saint Anselm's, but I am seeing his intellect stretched in ways I never could have imagined. He is learning to take on, and push through, tough assignments, in an atmosphere that is kind, jovial, and loving. The standards are very high, but struggling through is part of the process, we are both learning, and this is an important lesson he'll take throughout life. And despite the tough academics, he loves going to school - every day! The small classes mean the teachers have gotten to know

him as an individual, and they care about him, and he feels valued here. He loves the all-boy environment, and as a single mother, I love that he is surrounded by so many smart, gentle, thoughtful and intelligent men, especially the monks! For all its academic rigor, Saint Anselm's also loves its sports, which is huge for my son. Every time I drive into this calm oasis I think how fortunate we are to be at Saint Anselm's. This is why I support St. Anselm's — because I want the school to sustain its mission and give this experience to more young men.”

After thirty years, I still feel immense gratitude for my education at St. Anselm’s. Some days, it is as simple as the pleasure of recollecting a line from Ovid or the elegance of a mathematical proof. Other days require analytical skill, moral integrity, and self-confidence to grapple with intellectual and spiritual challenges. Still others require humility and faith. Few other experiences have prepared me for the world as holistically as my years at the Abbey.

Onnig Dombalagian, ’88

75th Anniversary Access To ExcellenceThe Devine Family

Endowed Scholarship CampaignTo help us celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the school, Brian Devine, ’59, his wife Silvija, and their family generously offered to match the gifts of their fellow supporters of St. Anselm’s. The larger the Endowment

and its contribution to financial aid, the more tuition in-come is available for teacher salaries, education technology improvements, and plant renovations.

Below is the list of gifts that were made to the Endowed Scholarship Fund during the 2017-18 fiscal year. This list reflects information as of June 30, 2018. On that date, the value of the Scholarship Endowment was $9,869,280. The Devine Family’s match of $1,000,000 will bring the total value to more than $10,800,000! Thank you to all who helped!

A Message from the AbbotDear Friends of St. Anselm’s,

When I am traveling out of town and people learn that my residence is in Washington, DC, I regularly get asked how I and other members of our mo-nastic community deal with the polarization that is so evident in the halls of government. Almost all of us monks vote and have definite positions about who should win in one or another election, but none of us are rabid activists for either of the major political parties. This probably reflects the American populace in general, where among registered voters significantly more iden-tify as independents than as either Democrats or Republicans.

This raises the question of what any of us—whether monks or lay friends of our community—could possibly do to lessen the acrimony found within Congress itself, where the phenomenon called “sorting” has led one political scientist to write that whereas in the mid-20th century both major parties were “big tents,” today conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans are all but extinct, resulting in an atmosphere of acrimony, distrust, and gridlock that has actually led some members to resign and go to work in some other arena. Rather than throw up our hands in despair, even though we have to admit that our voices may not have great effect, we are surely called to foster and promote those values of inclusion that are prom-inent in the Rule of St. Benedict. In his day and culture, there were, for example, stark differences between persons born into the nobility and those who were freed slaves, but Benedict insisted that such distinctions were insignificant. Early on in his Rule, he writes: “The abbot should avoid all favoritism in the monastery…. A man born free is not to be given higher rank than a slave who becomes a monk, except for some other good reason….Ordinarily, everyone is to keep to his regular place [in community rank], because ‘whether slave or free, we are all one in Christ'" (Galatians 3:28; Ephesians 6:8).

In both our monastery and our school, we constantly strive to live according to this teaching, being willing to listen to the views of others even if at times we then feel called to refute them. If this kind of bipartisan delib-eration and negotiation were more evident in our national government, then all of us could be more sanguine about the possibility of actually dealing with some of the major issues that confront us all.

I want to conclude this message by expressing my deep gratitude for the monetary gifts that many of you have made to the abbey over the past 12 months. We have gratefully listed your names in the next few pages of this Report and assure you of our regular prayers for all of our benefactors.

Sincerely in Saint Benedict,

James A. Wiseman, OSBAbbot

Vespers of GraduationCommencement AddressSTEPHEN KINNAIRD, ’80Thank you, Father Peter. Congratulations to the Class of 2018, and welcome to all who have gathered to share this day of joy.

Graduating seniors, 38 years ago I sat where you sit, likewise clad in the time-honored black pants, white jacket, and red carnation. Much has changed in that short time (and trust me it is a short time, even though it is two of your lifespans). In 1980, Al Gore had not yet invented the Internet. There were no cellphones, no email, no text messaging, no GPS, no Common App. No one had a computer at home. Of the five U.S. companies with the largest market value today, three of them (Alphabet, Facebook, and Amazon) did not exist, and two of them (Microsoft and Apple) were start-ups that had not yet gone public. The AIDS epi-demic had not yet struck; that would happen the next year. And Newsweek magazine warned of the dangers of global . . . cooling. The risk of nuclear war with the Communist Soviet Union dominated our minds. The age of terrorism was just dawning with the fall of the Iranian monarchy the year before.

None of us in 1980 could have anticipated what un-folded in the decades that followed, and no one here can anticipate what awaits you. We only know that, in an age of exponential growth of computing power, change will come with dizzying speed.

Your next step is college. In an era in which the ex-ternal world is changing so rapidly, is the task before you different from that which confronted me? No. The reason is that education is a process of internal transformation through intellectual encounter. The Roman historian Plutarch said that the mind is not a bottle to be filled, but a fire to be kindled. Education is not something you procure with your tuition dol-lars; you achieve it. It is the honing of your powers of analysis, judgment, imagination, and persuasion. It is the shaping of your moral code, your conception of duty and right, and your sense of meaning and beau-ty. It is the refinement of your understanding of the natural world and the crooked timber of humanity. That internal transformation empowers you to handle the contingencies of the external world, whatever they may be.

I wish to share with you four thoughts as you progress to the next stage of your education.

First, approach your education with a radical openness of mind. Shed your certitudes; welcome transformation. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said: Do not praise the man who has the courage of his convictions; praise him who has the courage to attack his convictions. En-gage thinkers and classmates who see things different-ly. We speak much of tolerance of different views, but

tolerance is a weak form of respect. A profounder form of respect is to recognize and embrace another’s truth.

Second, find inspiration. Education continues throughout life, but the distinctive thing about col-lege is the opportunity to be taught. Choose courses based on the teacher not the subject. I learned this in my English study in college. I was especially interested in English Romantic poetry, but the professor teach-ing the course gave jargon-filled lectures that drained the life from a poetry defined by passion and spiritual communion with nature. She embodied, ironically, the admonition of the Romantic poet Wordsworth that we murder to dissect. By contrast, I happened upon a lecture course by a little known junior pro-fessor on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a 14th century work written in Middle English. I had no prior interest in that work, but the professor was so attuned to the artistry of Chaucer that his lectures were themselves works of art. He would begin by explaining the struc-ture and imagery and characters of the tales, and every lecture would build to a crescendo in which he would draw out from that distant work universal truths of the human condition. I was on the edge of my seat. At any of the great institutions you will attend, priceless experiences of this kind await you. Seek them.

Third, have the patience to wander. You don’t need to be on a fast track, and your path may not be linear. Mine was not. I left St. Anselm’s convinced I would be an art historian; then in college contemplated becoming an English professor; then shifted my course of study at Oxford from English to politics and economics; and then joined a management consulting firm with an eye to a career in international development. But I did not feel at home in that job. One day, when I was 28 years old, I visited a friend who was attending law school. I felt so energized by what he and his friends were discuss-ing. It excited me to think about law as a system of social order formed from the converging currents of history, culture, economics, and politics. It was like awakening from a slumber. I went home and applied to law schools the next day. And I have been happy in my work ever since.

Austin Scholar AwardNAT MONAHAN, ’18

My college roommate had a similar circuitous path. He came to college intent on becoming a sports jour-nalist, but ended up going to the Peace Corps and then taking his pre-med courses after college. He is now at the top of his field chairing a department at Johns Hopkins Medical School. So don’t worry if your path seems obscure now or becomes obscure lat-er; you will find your way.

Finally, beware a false pragmatism that says you have to pursue a practical course of study like business or computer science, even if it does not speak to you. Most studies show that liberal arts majors fare well economically in the long run. The ability to write and think critically, and to understand human motivation, has economic value. But education is not only about fashioning a career. Your internal life of the mind mat-ters; your character and beliefs matter; the man you confront in the mirror every day matters. These too are the objects of your education.

Rest assured that no place could have prepared you better for what is to come than the school to which you bid farewell. It is ironic that slow-changing St. Anselm’s readies you so well for a fast-changing world. As a Benedictine school, St. Anselm’s develops the

mind, body, and soul of the boy to bring forth the man. Your teachers know you so well and have been nurturing and demanding of you in equal measure, and that makes all the difference.

So, in the welter of emotions that you may feel to-day, I hope among them is gratitude – the most uni-fying emotion. I feel a greater debt of gratitude to St. Anselm’s than to any other institution in my life. Be thankful that this school strives to provide an elite education to its students regardless of their means. Be sure to thank your parents today not only for the fi-nancial sacrifice that they made in educating you here, but also for the countless hours of thought and care that they have invested in bringing you to this cross-roads. And take a moment, before you leave or in the days that follow, to thank the teachers and staff that have made a difference in your life. No one rises with-out being lifted. As the son of teachers, I can tell you that such expressions mean a great deal.

So with a nod to the past, you now turn your gaze to the future. That is both electrifying and a little un-nerving. All I can say is throw yourself forward with abandon, commit to the enterprise with all your heart, and allow your mind to catch fire. ♦

In second grade, my mom tried to homeschool me which... didn’t exactly go well. She tried for a loose, “oh we can do math now, maybe some writing in a little bit,” approach, and I did not exactly take to it. I couldn’t handle not having a schedule, not knowing exactly when a given thing would be happening. So halfway through the year, we gave up, and I went to a normal elementary school where I stayed through the end of fifth grade.

With this understanding, I realized something else in turn: one of the reasons St. Anselm’s has been so great for me these past seven years is that school gradual-ly became less structured, and that this transition is one of the most important and overlooked ways this school prepares us for college. Back in sixth grade, everything was set in stone and uniform for all of us. We had one section of 22 students and, except for dividing the music class between instrumental and hand bells, the entirety of Form A had all our class-es together. Over time this began to change. In First Form, we split into two sections; in Second, we got to choose between Spanish, French, and Arabic, but overall our structured school life remained intact. In Forms Three and Four, we were finally in high school! And with three sections, it really felt more and more like we were, in a good way, more individual than class.

The real change, though, came in junior year. This was the first time we were really able to choose our schedule, express our individuality. And even though it felt like we had all this freedom, there were still a core set of classes we had to take together, Ethics and Biology to name two, to give us a common sense of structure. Finally, this year the structure, aside from the credit requirements to graduate, was gone. We

Hello and welcome to Abbot James, members of the monastic community, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, the Board of Trustees, our graduation speaker Mr. Kinnaird, faculty, staff, family, friends, and my fellow members of the Class of 2018.

I hope it doesn’t sound too cliché to say that this speech wasn’t easy to write, not just because, in typical Abbey-boy fashion, I put it off for as long as I could get away with. I don’t mean “hard to write” in any metaphorical or figurative sense, I mean I literally had no idea where to start. As I was thinking it through, trying to figure something out I realized that it was so hard to write because I need structure in whatever I’m doing, something more substantial than “write a speech. It should be about five minutes.”

had full freedom to choose our classes, and in this the school had finally completed our transition and pre-pared us for the chaos of college, but in just the right way that we built up a strong community of our peers along the way.

Everything I’ve said so far can be summarized in a few words, as those of you who’ve had a conversation with me may find typical; in this case, these words happen to be two of the Hallmarks of Benedictine Education. For those of you unfamiliar, the Hallmarks are ten concepts meant to guide a Benedictine monastery or school (love, prayer, stability, conversatio morum, obe-dience, discipline, humility, stewardship, hospitality, and community). Specifically, the kind of structural transition St. Anselm’s provides falls under Stability

and Community. And, as we graduate, move on, start the next stage of our lives, I think it would be a good idea to think back on our time at St. Anselm’s, any-where from three to seven years as the case may be, and appreciate what we’ve learned, what’s been done for us, and what we’ll have to rebuild from scratch starting next year. I know my example of structure is only one of the forty-two distinct and unique reflec-tions found in this graduating class, and I’m sure all of our experiences here have prepared us for our lives to come. After all, in the words of Søren Kierkegaard, “life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” And in those of Ken M, “If we don’t study the mistakes of the future, we’re doomed to repeat them for the first time.” ♦

St. Anselm of Canterbury AwardCARLOS ALVARADO-FLORES, ’18Abbot James, members of the monastic community, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, Mr. Kinnaird, faculty, staff, friends, and family, thank you all for taking the time to be here with us on a very important day in our lives. And to my fellow graduates of the Class of 2018, congratulations, we made it.

I wanted to begin by stating how honored I am to receive this award. I was very surprised last Thursday when they made the announcement during our awards assembly; I was actually thinking about who may be receiving the award and I went through a list of some of my fellow classmates who have given back so much to the school. I think that’s one of the things that makes this place so great. And one of the things that made giving back so easy. My classmates and I have shared many great moments here at the Abbey, whether it be from a long running inside joke, an awesome lab we did, a cool paper we wrote, or a book we read. It may just be a time we hung out or from one of our various retreats and outings throughout the years. I know these memories will last us for the rest of our lives.

They say that when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life and honestly, that is what this felt like. I love spending time here in the community and I know that that phrase is repeated so often here, that it’s a bit cliché. However, this feeling is the reason I never really felt I was doing work when I gave a small helping hand. It just felt right to help in any way I could because, looking back, this school has helped shape me and my classmates from a loud, unruly, and anxious bunch of teenagers to slightly better behaved, well-rounded, productive members of society. And like I said, this did not come about on its own. First and foremost, we have our parents to thank. I have three younger siblings all of whom attend different schools and my parents have been very supportive of me during my time here at the Abbey. We also have our teachers to thank who have always been available to help and guide us. They made the material fun to learn and have not only been great educators but, to many of us, they have also been great friends. I know that personally, I have grown to appreciate subjects that are not math and science. I also have Mr. Devine to thank, who a couple years ago decided he wanted to invest in the future of a total stranger. So, thank you. Thank you to all of you who have given us so much. It is truly a gift from God to receive so much from all of you and I can’t really think of anything we did to deserve it. But I feel we have used them well here during our time together at the Abbey. Therefore, I challenge myself and my fellow classmates to continue to make use of these gifts for the benefit of others. To leave any place a better place than we found it. Be it college, our future job, or whatever life throws at us because I know that with the skills we have learned here, we can shape our communities, our country, and our world for the better. ♦

Form II TransitionAlumni SpeakerRICHARD PERA, ’10Father Peter, Father Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, Mr. Leathers, faculty members, and, most importantly, the Second Form class: it is an honor to address you on this joyous day. Congratulations, Abbey Boys, on advancing from the lower school. Congratulations as well to the proud parents and family members whose faithful support enabled this achievement.

Before I begin, I want to say that, earlier this week, I emailed Fr. Michael asking for advice for this speech. He replied: “You’re a Presbyterian and you’ve listened to a lot of preaching, so you may have an inclination to talk for a long time. Remember: we Catholics love short sermons!” I’ll do my best to be quick, Father.

In my Third Form year, I made a terrible choice. At a class event in this theater – standing on this very stage – I publicly mocked one of my classmates. It was un-provoked, unwarranted, and hurtful. I did it because I wanted to fit in with the “cool” guys who acted that way all the time. My comments were deliberate – in-tended to enhance my status at another’s expense. It was wrong, and I knew it. My heart was filled with immediate regret. The incident proved important for my moral development, exposing a conflict between the man I wanted to be and the man God wanted me to be.

In The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis outlines the fundamental difference between good and evil, which speaks to this inner confrontation I experienced. He writes: “The whole philosophy of Hell rests on rec-ognition of the axiom that one thing is not another thing…that one self is not another self. My good is my good and your good is yours. What one gains another loses.”

Heaven’s philosophy is the opposite. Lewis explains that God’s approach is a seeming contradiction: “Things are to be many, yet somehow also one. The good of one self is to be the good of another. [God] calls [this] love, and this can be detected under all He does and even all He is.”

What Lewis is saying is that we face a decision.

One choice is selfishness. We can engage in zero-sum competition for physical gains and human admiration. But Lewis warns that even if we find success, this pat-tern will lead us to moral bankruptcy. Taking this path means going it alone. The other choice is selflessness. We can sacrifice for others – even those we dislike. We can approach life with humility and gratitude, finding richness in every moment. “The good of one self can be the good of another.”

Throughout the next four years, you will face variants of the same decision, hundreds of times over. Will you be selfish or selfless? Will you act in your own interest

or help to raise up those around you? Will you see other people as commodities or partners?

The rhetoric of righteousness is found in almost every formal speech and homily at St. Anselm’s. I know it gets monotonous. I cannot tell you the number of times I heard terms like pax in sapientia, ora et labora, and conversatio morum. My class used to joke that we could play “Benedictine Bingo” anytime Fr. Peter addressed us.

But the funny thing about this place is that all that stuff really sticks with you. And I suspect that it isn’t the homilies that do it – it certainly won’t be this speech. Instead, it’s love in action, demonstrated by faculty, staff, coaches, classmates, and especially the monks – people who put others before themselves and find deep fulfillment through it.

Allow me to give a few examples.

• The humility shown by an upperclassman who foregoes lunch in the Senior lounge to sit with middle schoolers in the Commons.

• The dedication shown by teachers like Mr. Com-mins, who sacrificed his free time to help strug-gling math students work through homework problems and build up their confidence.

• The generosity of one of my baseball teammates, who, whether he played or not, spent hours each week maintaining the field – never once com-plaining.

• And the gentle love shown by the late Fr. Ed-mund, who, though frail, stood sentry in the up-per building hallways, greeting every student he could with a smile and a hug.

There are moments when love is so apparent and powerful that it is impossible to ignore. But for every one of those grand moments, there are dozens of little moments like the ones I just described. They are easily overlooked in the barrage of high school: the home-work that never seems to end; the big game, match, or performance coming up; the crushes and dances; and, yes, the college applications – which are coming sooner than you think!

Often, I was so caught up in these things that I bare-ly noticed the love all around me, which meant that

Form II Student SpeakerDASH TISCHLER

Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, Mr. Pera, faculty, parents and guests, and my classmates from Form II:

Hello, and thank you all for coming to the Transition Ceremony. I hope to be able to sum up our Form as best I can in my remarks today. We’ve had three great, and at times crazy, years together, which definitely en-compassed more than I could tell you in even a day. In this year alone, we learned that accidental window breaking is our unofficial sport; calling someone “tra-ditional living room” in Arabic is not an acceptable method of cursing them out; apparently we’re not supposed to “curse” at each other in Arabic for fun in the hallway; and every grade is a “dub”—that is, a “W” for a win--meaning every assessment that we get handed back is points on the board toward today.

But most importantly, we need to say, “thank you” to several people. Thank you, Mr. Crittenberger, Mr. Leathers, Ms. Lane, all our teachers, and the SAAS staff. Thank you all for educating us. Thank you also to every Form Advisor we’ve ever had—Ms. Lane, Ms. Gotta, Dr. Manglitz, Ms. Sutton, Ms. Dunne, Mr. Gu-bartalla and Senora Montoya. Their job has been to be our grade’s advocates, to address all of our unique questions and to guide us through middle school. We also need to thank all the upper schoolers, and the other middle schoolers for being at school with us, and, in particular, the Form I parents and students who organized and are hosting the reception after this service. Thank you all very much. Lastly, we need to thank all our parents, who make so much possible for us. I hope all of you know that you are the best.

I know that St. Anselm’s has ten important core values, called the Hallmarks, and the one that best sums our class up is Community. We are tight knit as a grade, and although there are a lot of people who have joined since Form A, none of us think “Oh, he’s new” about any of those individuals; it feels like all of us have been here since the start. I remember in Form A, Mr. DeLuca asked, “How did you find us?” There are a bunch of different answers to that ques-tion. Some people have family ties, but what about the rest of us? We are all very different people with dif-ferent stories, but this is where we decided to come, and I think that speaks volumes. The commitment to attend SAAS as a middle school student requires a lot of effort, in and outside of the classroom, on behalf of both the students and parents. There is a signifi-cant amount of work involved, and lot of people travel from far distances.

Lastly, I know some of you here (both teachers, and students) are heading on to your next adventure. On behalf of all of us we wish you the greatest success. Please, do remain in touch, you will be missed.

Thank you all for coming today to celebrate this mile-stone. I can’t wait for us to get going on the next four years as a class. Once again, thank you all for being here with us today. ♦

I mostly focused on myself. But these moments are there; this community is filled with them. Looking back, you’ll realize how much they’ve shaped you.

I learned from my mistake in Form III. From then on, I made an effort to be a friend to many – including those I didn’t really care to know. A funny thing hap-pened along the way: I found belonging and purpose. Over the next several years, our class, which had its problems, steadily solidified and matured. By Senior year, I came to view this place as home, my classmates as my brothers, and the monks as wise, old uncles (or something like that). My most treasured friendships originated here at The Abbey.

To those of you who are leaving St. Anselm’s for an-other high school: I wish you well. As someone who

attended three middle schools in three years, I can report that experiences at past schools can shape you for the better. Learn from your time here; take the good from it. Seek to lift those around you in all that you do.

For those of you who are returning to The Abbey: I envy you. These next four years will go by far too quickly. Don’t get me wrong: they’ll be tough. But they’ll also be filled with those little moments of self-less love.

Look for those moments. Give thanks for them. Cre-ate them yourself.

Thank you, and congratulations. ♦
