BY THE WAY . . . • “You’ll be amazed at how great you’ll feel.”

“Ray, you have to do it.” “You’ll get back more energy that you had before.” “It would be foolish to have gone through all this, and not finish the course.” “It’s a no-brainer.” “They” are all my family and friends taking about cardiac rehab, something I am not

looking forward to. But at this point I know I have to do it. It does not make sense not to. The Holy Season of Lent, I suspect, is a lot like cardiac rehab. We have to enter into it each year, over and over again, in order to keep our Christian identity fresh and vital, and keep our Christian muscles from becoming flabby and atrophied. Another way of looking at Lent is like spring-cleaning, an opportunity to make an honest evaluation of ourselves and get rid of the clutter and distractions that impede us from a closer walk with Jesus. There are three traditional penances that Christians embrace during Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. They are all interrelated. We fast (give up things) in order to assert our freedom from the stuff (everything from chocolates to the Internet) that dominate our lives. At the same time, the fasting frees up some of our time to enter into prayer with God, and frees up some of our resources to be more generous to the needy. It is not rocket science; it is a simple formula to grow in holiness during this season. There are many opportunities here at Saint Anthony’s to help us live this Lent. Lent begins this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday. Holy Mass with the distribution of ashes will take place at Saint Anthony’s at 7:00 A.M., 9:00 A.M. 12:05 Noon, and 7:30 P.M. There will also be a Prayer Service at 3:30 P.M. As I mentioned last week, due to Covid 19 considerations, the blessed ashes will be sprinkled on the top of the head (in the European fashion) rather than “signed” on the forehead. Please come forward and bow your head to receive the ashes. Holy Mass is celebrated each weekday at 7:30 A.M. Each of these Masses is also livestreamed and can be accessed at any time during the day. Father Sylwester has been hard at work editing our Parish Lenten Booklet. It contains a reflection written by a different member of our parish community for each day of the Lenten Season. This is a perfect way to take a few minutes each day and enter into prayer and reflection. The Lenten Booklets are available at the doors of the church after each Mass today.

Stations of the Cross: the Stations of the Cross devotion, led by a different staff member, will be prayed each Friday night of Lent at 7:30 P.M.

Eucharistic Holy Hour: Our monthly Eucharistic Holy Hour with the Rosary and quiet

reflection before the Blessed Sacrament, followed by Benediction, will be on Tuesday, March 9 from 7:30 to 8:30 P.M. in the church.

Page 5: ST. ANTHONY · 2021. 2. 13. · 4 BY THE WAY . . . • “You’ll be amazed at how great you’ll feel.” “Ray, you have to do it.” “You’ll get back more energy that you

5

Sacrament of Penance: In addition to the regular Saturday time (4:30-5:15 P.M.), Confessions will also be available on the five Monday nights of Lent from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.

Novena to Saint Joseph: Pope Francis has declared this year a “Year of Saint Joseph” in

honor of the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as “Patron of the Universal Church.” The saint’s feast day, March 19, falls in the middle of Lent. Beginning on Thursday, March 11, we will observe a Novena of Prayer in honor of Saint Joseph. We will pray the Litany of Saint Joseph at the end of Mass on each of the nine days leading up to his Feast.

Fast and Abstinence: All the Fridays of Lent are observed by Catholics around the world

as Days of Abstinence. No meat is taken on those days. In addition, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are Days of Fast, with only one full meal allowed.

At the doors of the church this weekend Rice Bowls are available. This effort, sponsored

by Catholic Relief Services, is an especially “New Jersey” form of Lenten almsgiving. It was first conceived by Mr. James Norris of Rumson, and has spread to virtually every parish in the United States. Again, use the rice bowl as a “piggy bank” and each day drop in in it the money you are saving by not consuming something else. Turn the rice bowls in at the end of Lent, and the monies will be used to feed to hungry around the world.

Wednesday Nights with the Saints: No, this is not a jam session with the New Orleans

football team. Rather, each Wednesday night of Lent from 7:30 to 8:30 P.M., Father Ray will discuss the life and work, triumphs and trials of one of the Saints, along with some applications for our own lives. Questions will be entertained. This can be attended live or be livestream.

Livestream: The following events are livestreamed each week and can be accessed

through our parish web site: Sunday morning Mass at 10:00 A.M. Weekday Mass each morning at 7:30 A.M. Eucharistic Holy Hour on March 9 at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday Nights with the Saints at 7:30 P.M. In these and many other ways, we discover the opportunity to enter into Lent. As the

Opening Prayer of Ash Wednesday says, this is the ultimate campaign of Christians service. We do not enter it alone. We are all in it together with Christ. We celebrate his death, which was not defeat but victory, and his resurrection which is the only reward ultimately worth fighting for, not for ourselves alone, but for all our brothers and sisters everywhere.

Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting The campaign of Christian service, So that, as we take up battle against our spiritual evils, We may be armed with weapons of self-restraint. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Happy Lent, Father Ray

RICE BOWLS ARE HERE!

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (February 17), and this year our parish will participate again

in CRS Rice Bowl.

As previously announced, this year our parish will partici-pate in Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl. Because of the pandemic, we're offering parishioners a number of

donation options: If you attend Mass, Rice Bowls are available at the

doors of the church and we invite you to take one home with you;

Instead of using a Rice Bowl, you may write a check made payable to St. Anthony's Church, with "Rice Bowl" on the memo line; place the check in a sealed envelope with "Rice Bowl" on the front and drop in the Offertory basket or in the rectory mail slot;

You can donate online or by text. Please use this link found on our parish website or Facebook page https://giving.parishsoft.com/app/giving/stanthonyrcchurch.

Text a donation amount to 973-245-9778 and ParishSOFT Giving will prompt you to enter any required information. For assistance, please contact Donna Mallory at 973-557-0858 or [email protected]

Donations can be made at any time during Lent; we will accept the return of Rice Bowls themselves the weekend after Easter. More information will be forthcoming in later bulletins. We thank you for your generosity and

support.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said: ‘If you wish you can make me clean.’

Moved with pity he stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, ‘I do will it. Be made clean...’

The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean... The man went away and began to

publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a

town openly.”

This week we will begin the Season of Lent. To prepare myself well, may I find that I too am a leper,

needing cleansing, healing and new spiritual strength.

Consider for a moment the pandemic, now one year old, affecting millions, taking countless lives. The

search for a cure, vaccines, the use of masks, distancing and hand washing became a new practice for all.

Yet the scars remain.

Our spiritual lives are suffering too. Have I looked at the health of my soul and see the need for cleansing

and renewal? Am I ready to tell the Lord today: ‘Here I am, how do you find me?’ This is my opportunity

to be honest with myself and the Lord, to act, ask for forgiveness, to begin a time of prayer, to say thanks

to the Lord for a good confession, to admit to my need to learn the mercy of Jesus.

The miracle for the leper, ‘If you wish’, is mine today, and Jesus, with the same pity as He looks at our

corona virus affected world, wishes to help us.

Gospel Today

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time | Mark 1:40-45

Jesus cured the leper, a man with a skin disease, with a touch of His hand.

When the leper was healed, Jesus said, “Don’t tell this to anyone.” Jesus trusted the man to go quietly to the priest,

but instead he ran off telling everyone he was cured. He did NOT keep it a secret (he was very excited). As a result,

Jesus  could no  longer  enter  a  town openly, but  stayed  in  lonely places.  S ll, people  kept  coming  to Him  from

everywhere. Jesus gave the leper new life...

begins  this week...

Dear Jesus... I have sinned, I am sorry, let’s begin again.  Love, ___________________________                                                                                                                                        your name

Give us New Life, O Lord.

SHROVE TUESDAY also known as... FAT TUESDAY = MARDI GRAS = PANCAKE DAY

It is a tradi on to eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Shrove comes from the word “shrive”, meaning to confess,

or tell God we are sorry for our sins. Pancakes use up food items that were not permi ed during Lent in the

Middle Ages ‐ milk, eggs, fat, bu er and meat. Lent begins tomorrow ‐ Let’s eat pancakes today!

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Cook on greased, hot skillet. Flip when bubbles appear and pop. Makes

8, 4” pancakes — Serving with bu er, syrup, fruit or meat is op onal.
