Benediction – 11:45

Dear Parishioners,

I have always been told that the date of Easter is determined

by the moon. So, Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first

full moon after the Ides (15th) of March. As a result, Easter this

year, April 16th is later than it has been in the past few years,

and that means that the time between the conclusion of the

Christmas season and Ash Wednesday is an extended period of

time. That being said, Ash Wednesday of this week is the start of

the penitential season of Lent which will prepare us for the

passion, death and resurrection of the Lord on Easter Sunday.

In speaking of Lent, the ceremonial of bishops states: "The

annual observance of Lent is the special season for the ascent to

the holy mountain of Easter. Through its twofold theme of

repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes the

catechumens (those preparing for entrance into the church) and

the faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. Catechumens are

led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of

election, the scrutinizes and catechesis. The faithful, listening

more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to

prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to review their

baptismal promises.

One theologian states that there is a temptation to see Lent as

a time of self-improvement, during which my focus is on myself.

My only hope is that someone will save me. Saint Paul says: I do

not the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want...Miserable

one that I am. Who will deliver me from this mortal body?

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord." And so, our

focus during Lent should not be on ourselves, but on the

presence of Jesus. Lent is a time when we can turn to Jesus and

beg for a renewed experience of his presence. He is the one who

saves us from my miserable condition: it is his merciful gaze

which awakens and transforms me.

There are still some among us who remember the Lenten days

of our past. There was always something to give up (for me it

was always candy). There were the Stations of the Cross which

we attended weekly, morning Mass for those who could work it

into their school and work schedule, and a real time of

preparation for Holy Week and all the beautiful liturgies of Holy

Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, culminating in the

great feast of Easter. Today the time of Lent places the

responsibility of preparation for Holy Week squarely on the

shoulders of the individual. The rules of fast and abstinence

(from eating meat) are minimal, and each person is responsible

for his or her Lenten sacrifices.

Please take with you the flyer with all the Lenten services as

well as the times of daily mass in our neighboring parishes.

Please use Lent as a time of special prayer for our own country

as well as for the world. More things are wrought by prayer than

this world dreams of, and certainly our country and our world are

in great need of prayer. May this season of Lent be one filled

with God's grace and may we heed the words of Ash

Wednesday: "remember you are dust and unto dust you will

return."

Sincerely,

Fr John R. Mulvehill

A young person I know who went off to college

sent me a message. She was telling me how she

and her friends were walking down the street

and a man came up to them and asked if he

could talk. They were a bit reluctant at first, but

decided to listen to him. He told them no one

would take the time to just listen. Eventually it came the time for

the man to ask if they could buy him and his wife something to

eat and of course it was a bit awkward and again the young

people decided to do as he asked. As they were walking across

the street he began to tell his story and to make a long story short

Mary said "A little light turned on inside me, this man who so

many see as unimportant , a failure and dangerous was the person

who saved me that day. He taught me what unconditional love is"

She went on to say It did not matter if he was telling me the truth,

he is a human being who deserves the same dignity as any other

human being and we are expected to help each other out

regardless of anything. This is where we must rise above all the

antics and embrace the one true law of Jesus. "love one another

as I have loved you" I am proud of Mary. Her act was one of

courage. She put aside her fears and prejudices and simply loved

this man and he loved her back. The best part is she did not see

herself as the savior, she saw this man as hers.
