GOSPEL MEDITATION: JOHN 6:1-15

Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger? Even the most independent among us likes to make changes and have an impact on others. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most iconic miracles: the multiplication of the loaves. It is a sign of the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed not by bread but by the Body of Christ.

In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were done entirely under the gods' own power. Mortals may have offered sacrifices to start the chain of events, but they played little role in the miraculous works themselves. Jesus is entirely different. The multiplication of the loaves is a prime example not only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he equips his disciples.

First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him." Jesus has seen the crowds and "he himself knew what he was going to do," but he wants his disciples to start thinking about the problem and its solution. Andrew offers a suggestion, though he isn't confident in it. "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus honors Andrew's suggestion, takes the offered loaves, and delegates the Apostles to bring order to the crowd. When the crowd has been fed, the Apostles "gather the fragments left over." In the process, they discover with wonder that bread has been produced in super abundance.

In the sacraments, God works through simple matter to make grace real in our lives. He works in and through us as well. Are you facing problems that could have spiritual solutions? Is there a need in your parish or community that you could meet? Whatever our hesitancies, Jesus honors our simple loaves and fishes. He invites us to participate in his generous work of redemption, just as we are. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Living the Gospel does not require much. In fact, less is sometimes more. Simple gestures or random acts of kindness can have unimaginable results and change lives. It is easy to believe that we do not have what it takes to make a difference, but we do! It does not take much to satisfy the hungers of the human heart or mend the wounds of sorrow and pain. All we need to know is that God is with us. All people need to know is that we are with them. If someone shared with you that she was pregnant and hadn't ruled out having an abortion, would you know how to re-spond? Although the first instinct may be to convince her that abortion ends a baby's life, hearing facts is not the first thing she needs. Research shows that many women in a preg-nancy crisis think, "This is the end of my life as I know it." To face the challenges before her, your friend needs to know you care about her for her own sake and she is not alone. First listening to your friend will help build trust and facili-tate openness. Eventually, when she knows you truly care about her and she trusts you, you can share the truth in love. You can share facts about abortion, her own intrinsic worth, and the practical help and support available so she can choose life for herself and her baby. Consider the four steps of the L.O.V.E. Approach™*: Listen and Learn, Open Options, Vision and Value, and Extend and Empower. L: Listen and Learn First, prioritize listening over speaking. You don't have to worry about whether you may say something "wrong," and you don't need to have all the answers. Start by listening to her story. Ask her about her feelings, thoughts, values, beliefs, and wants. Do not interrupt, except to ask her to expound, when appropriate. Ask open-ended questions, and confirm what you think you are hearing. O: Open Options When her story is fully shared, it is your turn to provide fac-tual information, always in a loving and caring way. You

might share about the reality of abortion and the wounds that typically result. As they relate to her life, you might share experiences about having a baby, adoption, and marriage. It's most helpful to keep the focus on her. V: Vision and Value Awaken a vision in her for a healthier life (a vision she may never have had, or that may have dimmed). Help her value herself differently. She is a special creation, worthy of love. Reassure her there is always hope and she is not alone. She can make positive, life-giving choices. She can do it. E: Extend and Empower Provide practical help and support. Her local pregnancy help center ( can offer consultation, lists of community resources, heartbeatinternational.org/worldwide-directory)and ul-trasound services. Consider keeping such lists of resources in your car, purse, or wallet. Help her plan next steps. The L.O.V.E. Approach™ is a way to bring Christ's love at a crucial life-saving and life-defining moment. We are created to walk with and support one another. May we not hesitate to reach out in love. This issue of Life Issues Forum has been adapted and shortened from the 2017-2018 USCCB Respect Life Program brochure by the same name: www.usccb.org/l-o-v-e. Used with permission. *The L.O.V.E. Approach™ is trademarked by Heartbeat Interna-tional, Inc. and may not be adapted or modified. The L.O.V.E. When a Friend is Considering Abortion

WORDS OF LIFE

“Abortion […] cannot be a human right – it is the very opposite. It is ‘a deep wound in society’.”

— Pope Benedict XVI, Meeting With the Authorities and the Diplomatic Corps, Hofberg, Vienna, 7 September 2007

“El aborto no puede ser un derecho humano; es exactamente lo opuesto”. Es una ‘profunda herida social’”. — Papa Benedicto XVI, Encuentro con las autoridades y el cuerpo diplomático, Hofberg, Viena, 7 de septiembre de 2007

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

& RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation of Children)

Why join the Catholic Church?

If you are asking the question, perhaps God is leading you to an

answer. We believe you will find the fullness of Christianity in the teaching of the Catholic Church. Through RCIA/RCIC interested adults and children come to know the presence of God and learn

how a relationship with Him can change their lives. It is an opportunity to see what the Catholic Church believes and how we live our faith. In the RCIA process, we will study the scriptures, discuss Catholic teaching, and most importantly, get a true, good

and honest idea about what the Catholic Church is really all about. We are always interested in new inquiries. If you or someone you know would like to become a Catholic, or if you were baptized Catholic but have never celebrated Eucharist or

THIS WEEK’S

READINGS

I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me. Have I treated people, events, or things as more important than God? You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Have my words, actively or passively, put down God, the Church, or people? Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. Do I go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday Vigil) and on Holy Days of Obligation (Jan. 1; the Ascension; Aug. 15; Nov. 1; Dec. 8; Dec. 25)? Do I avoid, when possible, work that impedes worship to God, joy for the Lord’s Day, and proper relaxation of mind and body? Do I look for ways to spend time with family or in service on Sunday? Honor your father and your mother. Do I show my parents due respect? Do I seek to maintain good communication with my par-ents where possible? Do I criticize them for lacking skills I think they should have? You shall not kill. Have I harmed another through physical, verbal, or emotional means, including gossip or manipulation of any kind? You shall not commit adultery. Have I respected the physical and sexual dignity of others and of myself? You shall not steal. Have I taken or wasted time or resources that belonged to another? You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Have I gossiped, told lies, or embellished stories at the expense of another?

You shall not covet your neighbor’s spouse. Have I honored my spouse with my full affection and exclusive love? You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. Am I content with my own means and needs, or do I compare myself to others unneces-sarily?

Christ’s Two Commandments How well do we love God and others? Do we love as Christ calls us to? In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ gives us Two Command-ments: “He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the proph-ets depend on these two commandments’” (Mt 22:37-40). Not sure what love is? St. Paul describes it for us in his Letter to the Corinthians. Is this how you love God and others? “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (1 Cor 13:4-8). Copyright © 2013, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC.
