Pastor’s Pen

“Christ leads us to go out from ourselves more and more, to give ourselves and to serve others. Pope Francis

Dear Friends:

During the special Easter season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never con-tributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven’t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2018 Appeal.

As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 programs and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on.

These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabili-ties and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live.

But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you!

If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 contribution this year – think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others!

Make checks payable to: Catholic Ministries Appeal Parish __________________________________ Pledge:$_______ Name ___________________________________ Down payment: $_______ Address__________________________________ City, State, Zip: _________________________________________________________ Phone:________________

Thank You!

BAPTISMS

May 13, 2018 7th Sunday of Easter This Sunday’s Gospel is known as the “priestly

prayer” of Jesus. The entire passage is Jesus entrusting us to the Father. “When I was with them I protected them … I guarded them,” Jesus says. He asks His Father, “Keep them in your name.” In this prayer of Jesus, we see the paradoxical tension of our life as Christians in the world. He anticipates struggle for the believer. He de-scribes it in strong words, words that could even appear frightening to the believer. “I gave them your word, and the world hated them.” Not only that, but with our eyes on eternal life, we “do not belong to the world.” And yet in the midst of those realities, Jesus doesn’t take us out of the world. On the contrary, “as you sent Me into the world, so I sent them into the world.”

Christians live in this tension daily. The call of Jesus often defies nice, neat categories. We uphold justice as virtue yet are invited to love our enemies. We offer gifts and generous hospitality to others while being re-minded of the value of temperance. We are called to teach the truth of right and wrong without losing sight of the beam in our own eye. It can be difficult to find the balance in our own lives, and a Church that preaches moral perfection can easily fall under scrutiny when it falls short.

In the midst of these complications, Jesus offers a message of hope. He is well aware of the contradictions into which He sends us, and His Father will equip us ac-cordingly. “Consecrate them in truth.” “Keep them from the evil one.” Jesus does not abandon us to the tensions of our time but remains near at hand by the grace alive in His Church.

Here are some of the young people in Fr. Al’s group. Right now there are 25 of them. They all have severe mental and/or physical disabilities Resulting from a devastating ethnic war

In an attempt to continue our efforts to support them, we will have 2 raffles, one is for a diamond necklace and the other is for a trip to Orlando in late June or early July. Raffle tickets will be available next week.

The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned preg-nancy.Did you know that they provide:free pregnancy tests, maternity housing with eligibility requirements, medical care, referrals, cribscar seats, diapers…and all other baby items that may be needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your donation.(Make checks out to the Life Center of L.I.)

PLEASE RETURN THE BOTTLES ON June 16th & 17th Father’s Day weekend

Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place.

Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.

Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle! On Mother’s Day weekend, May 12th & 13th, St. Anthony of Padua parish will be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island.

PRAYER FOR MOTHERS Heavenly Father, from the beginning you have chosen to entrust the human person to mothers in a special way. We thank and praise you for the gift of mothers; for their tenderness, care, and compassion, for their intuition and encouragement, for commitment and sacrifice. Bless all mothers this day. Keep, strengthen, and refresh them in your loving care. May they be blessed by our open-hearted love and gratitude. Amen.
